The Mega Man Battle Network TCG didn't use life points either. You would "take damage" in the form of putting (X) cards from the top of your library into your "graveyard" until you've run out of cards in your library. The result being: play a deck based around Electroman (or at least, I think that was his name) which has effects that return cards from your graveyard back to your library, thus being the "best" deck to play because you had access to "healing" in a way. There are a lot of cards that can properly do this; but most of them were electric type, in effect narrowing how much you use this game mechanic. I've a lot of card games in my youth and for some reason this just stuck with me. Great, informative video! Thank you!💚
I always was curious to know more about the earliest days of Yu-Gi-Oh and you delivered with this video! Fantastic work! I wouldn't hate it if you one day covered how the Dark Magician Girl was first introduced!
11:22 - Dragon Warrior Monster footage hit my nostalgia so hard. The depth in that game blew me away as a kid and is still my gold standard in the genre. Great video! ❤
This was a great video. I've seen these early Yu-Gi-Oh! cards before, mostly the ones featuring the characters from the Toei series, but I didn't know the full history behind them or how Konami first got involved with the franchise. That was pretty interesting. Kazuki Takahashi's passing still feels so unreal to me. It was so sudden and tragic. I truly hope that he is at peace and his loved ones are doing okay.
Only reason I know about it is that there's a small youtube channel called Maniax Channel that talked about the History of Japanese Trading Card Games and the 10th episode is about this whole really weird early Yugioh era such as before you had to tribute monsters and before Konami had control
Oh! Did I see a Keyforge card at the opening!? I would love to see a video about it, it is one of my favorite card games and the ONLY one I keep on playing weekly.
Wow, this video is amazing and I learned something new.. Kazuki Takahashi was a legend and Yu-Gi-Oh has had a huge impact on me growing up and something I still hold dead to me to this day. His art style inspired me to get better at art, his stories resonated with me, and nowhere can I find a better cast of characters. Yugioh is amazing because Kazuki Takahashi made it amazing. Rest in power, the real life King of Games.
Considering how dire many of Bandai's early video games on Famicom and Game Boy turned out, it should be no surprise to anyone that Bandai's Yu-Gi-Oh! card game turned out the way it did. Bandai is not associated with quality until they swallowed up Namco in the mid-2000s
I heard of season 0, but didn't know much about the carddass yugioh cards. Very awesome, and loved the tribute. I played from the beginning and collected the cards and games. I still have my collection and love them all. Had to pick up the Seto Kaiba 25th anniversary briefcase for the PC. Keep up the great work!
I would pay to see a duel between Season Zero Kaiba vs modern Kaiba. Also, awesome to have you back, Jwitz. Looking forward to more deep dives like this.
"Monsters that were completely unique to either the card game or the Toei anime" -Aphrodite Yeah, I wonder why that one didn't stick around in a game that was (at least at that time somewhat still tangentially) related to ancient Egypt... XD XD XD Bless you for this wonderful video. And, truly, an eternal sweet rest to Takahashi-sensei. One of the greats, even if he only gave us the singular seminal work.
Konami recently printed an anniversary Dark Magician card that features artwork similar to the original Bandai Dark Magician, but with modern Konami colouring, and it's simply incredible.
I like the Bandai cards' art style. They have a very unique feeling of "being a game". A combination of JRPG and American comics, which is exactly Takahashi's style.
Ah, an exploration of the games that started it all- and the insane anime that slowly morphed into a slightly-less insane anime! Thank you for exploring this, Jwittz!
A video so soon after the last one. I am so happy that one of my favourite channels is back. I know your life if busy, so thank you so much for the content Jwittz
6:33-6:35 I want point something out. The actual rule is: "Select 1 Monster Card from your hand and play it to start a Battle." This implies you HAVE to summon a monster. In fact in the manga, Kaiba automatically lost to Pegasus due to being unable to summon any monsters. So in order to prevent this from happening, you need to have less than 5 non-monster cards.
Cardass explains a-lot, the vending machine culture of Japan is fascinating. Seeing some game design choices for Japanese games as cultural is interesting
Fun fact that Jwittz missed, that wonky 4 piece blue eyes was a reference to that toei 'movie' he mentioned at the end. I recommend if you guys ever get the chance check it out, it's genuinely an interesting watch for many reasons.
Tbh Carddass is called Card-Dasu, which is a pun for "Giving out Cards" which the machine does. I seen them but I never pulled the machine myself as I play some Bandai card games myself, loved card games from both companies anyways. But pretty informative (except Carddass/カードダス pronounciation)
Though you forget a lot of Japanese are dropping the "unnecessary" sounds, I'm pretty sure it's at least partially due to English being a mandatory language to learn, so if you showed that word to a Japanese person who never heard it said they'd likely drop the "u" sound and say it closer to what Jwittz says
i think saying that modern yugioh being "usually fine" is a little generious btw i do notice a lack of Bushi Road games in your opening pile. Vanguard: is.. a Success?? Buddyfight: died as fast and it's meta Weiss: is a Niche Niche and Luck and Logic: was a failed Success. i'd love to hear your takes on these
I mean Yugioh could be better again if we get a new set of master rules that slowed do certain summoning mechanics. But Vanguard surprises me its even around the game has the fastest powercreeps ever and they even had to reboot the series a few times.
jesus christ man why so negative?, just because you dont like something doesnt mean is not fine or that they are not successful with their own audiences
@@beauaadams153 Vanguard has a weird issue of making things that aren't good for the game. Like they make a good game first, then nuke it. G era made consistency issues worse, and rised offensive power standards without touching defensive power standards V era rebooted the game, rised the defensive standards, and lowered offensive standards, but got out of hand no with "power" creep but with "feature" creep Overdress, rebooted again, fixing the consistency issues from the beginning, reduced the amount of "colors" so they aren't diluting the power to thin. But for whatever reason, as if they have a child on the dev team they can't say no to. We have over triggers. Which a good % of the community and even tournaments say is banned

Hey Jwittz, it's a well known fact that you like niche as well as popular CCGs. Have you heard of Redline: Tactical Card Combat? The front half it's a variant on Magic the Gathering's Commander format, the backhalf it's Mecha fighting in simultaneous combat over a set of objectives, trying to control everything or run the enemy out of resources.
I've been a YuGiOh fan as long as I can remember and I never knew this existed
Only reason I know about it is that there's a small youtube channel called Maniax Channel that talked about the History of Japanese Trading Card Games and the 10th episode is about this whole really weird early Yugioh era such as before you had to tribute monsters and before Konami had control
Pat same, and didn't know you love Yugioh too
I also see you every time in comments of videos I also watched.
Can’t wait to see more! Great video as always!
I liked the Takahashi tribute at the end. Was good of u to include that
You know it’s a special day when Jwittz uploads a video.
I was just thinking about this man talking about card games because I got back into Digimon recently. Hilarious timing Mr. JWittz xD
RIP Kazuki Takahashi... thank you for making my childhood awesome.
Considering how dire many of Bandai's early video games on Famicom and Game Boy turned out, it should be no surprise to anyone that Bandai's Yu-Gi-Oh! card game turned out the way it did. Bandai is not associated with quality until they swallowed up Namco in the mid-2000s
I’ll always be a huge fan of Digimon from before Namco became part of it, but I’ll be the first to admit Ban Dai are doing way better now
0:17 I was THIS close to unsubscribing.
So happy to see you uploading again, I was missing me some JWittz
I heard of season 0, but didn't know much about the carddass yugioh cards. Very awesome, and loved the tribute. I played from the beginning and collected the cards and games. I still have my collection and love them all. Had to pick up the Seto Kaiba 25th anniversary briefcase for the PC.
Keep up the great work!
I would pay to see a duel between Season Zero Kaiba vs modern Kaiba.
Also, awesome to have you back, Jwitz. Looking forward to more deep dives like this.
I've missed your videos and great to see you back again, this was cool to learn about and look forward to whatever you do next
"Monsters that were completely unique to either the card game or the Toei anime"
-Aphrodite
Yeah, I wonder why that one didn't stick around in a game that was (at least at that time somewhat still tangentially) related to ancient Egypt... XD XD XD
Bless you for this wonderful video. And, truly, an eternal sweet rest to Takahashi-sensei. One of the greats, even if he only gave us the singular seminal work.
Well, Ancient Greece did have trade and relations with Ancient Egypt, so it’s not impossible
was kind of expecting the arceus dex video to be your only one for a while, happily surprised to have this show up, glad you’re back, bud.
Konami recently printed an anniversary Dark Magician card that features artwork similar to the original Bandai Dark Magician, but with modern Konami colouring, and it's simply incredible.
Great video! I'm a Yu-gi-oh fan, but I didn't know about that card game!
Also, nice homage to Kazuki Takahashi. RIP
Great video jwittz. Still on the pray train for a video on yugioh games (Yugioh The Falsebound Kingdom)
I like the Bandai cards' art style. They have a very unique feeling of "being a game". A combination of JRPG and American comics, which is exactly Takahashi's style.
YESSSSSS JWITTZ its so good to have you back. This is exactly the content I need in my life
Fun fact: yugi (the little guy) was a perv in season 0
Wow a Jwittz Pokémon and a Jwittz YuGiOh video in such a short amount of time? My birthday came early.
I'M BACK, BAYBEEEEEE
Ah, an exploration of the games that started it all- and the insane anime that slowly morphed into a slightly-less insane anime! Thank you for exploring this, Jwittz!
It’s so, so good to have you back again popping up in the feed from time to time :)
A video so soon after the last one. I am so happy that one of my favourite channels is back. I know your life if busy, so thank you so much for the content Jwittz
Master Duel got me hella addicted right now, so obsessed with my Power of the Dragon REDUX deck
6:33-6:35
I want point something out.
I will hear no disrespect towards my girl Miho, she was one of the best parts of Season Zero (along with Yami Yugi being a complete psychopath in it).
Her design is pretty basic but I love it all the same
Yugi wasn’t a Psychopath; Kaiba was though.
heheheh carddass
@@pn2294 Well, he does burn a guy to death.
@@cookieface80 that guy was a serial killer
Fun fact that Jwittz missed, that wonky 4 piece blue eyes was a reference to that toei 'movie' he mentioned at the end. I recommend if you guys ever get the chance check it out, it's genuinely an interesting watch for many reasons.
J-man
I think you've become the King of Games.
You've covered so many type of games and franchises. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the hard work!
I’m glad to see you upload videos again and it’s Nice to see more yugioh content from you, keep up the great videos man 💕
Season 0 was great and I enjoyed every moment of it.
I love the videos about obscure stuff like this, Jwittz at his best imo!
By far my favorite videos of yours are the ones delving into esoteric card and boardgames
There's very few people I drop everything to watch a new video from, but you're one of them.
Glad to see you are back! 👏 missed your videos! 🙌
i think saying that modern yugioh being "usually fine" is a little generious
btw i do notice a lack of Bushi Road games in your opening pile.
Vanguard: is.. a Success??
Buddyfight: died as fast and it's meta
Weiss: is a Niche Niche
and Luck and Logic: was a failed Success.
i'd love to hear your takes on these
I mean Yugioh could be better again if we get a new set of master rules that slowed do certain summoning mechanics. But Vanguard surprises me its even around the game has the fastest powercreeps ever and they even had to reboot the series a few times.
jesus christ man why so negative?, just because you dont like something doesnt mean is not fine or that they are not successful with their own audiences
@@beauaadams153
Vanguard has a weird issue of making things that aren't good for the game. Like they make a good game first, then nuke it.
G era made consistency issues worse, and rised offensive power standards without touching defensive power standards
V era rebooted the game, rised the defensive standards, and lowered offensive standards, but got out of hand no with "power" creep but with "feature" creep
Overdress, rebooted again, fixing the consistency issues from the beginning, reduced the amount of "colors" so they aren't diluting the power to thin. But for whatever reason, as if they have a child on the dev team they can't say no to. We have over triggers. Which a good % of the community and even tournaments say is banned
I haven't been recommend a jwitzz video in years, I almost scrolled past but I'm glad I didn't, he really hasn't changed much, it's nice to come back to.
Really glad to have you back JWitts. Looking forward to more awesome content.
"I think Yugioh might be the worst card game of all time"
I agree!
"No not that one. That one is usually fine"
Oh...
so glad you’re back on YT! i LOVE your content!
The JWittz is back baby
yu gi oh was one of those games where in the beginning i think most kids didn't know what the exact rules were because of how many different versions of the rules there were(unless they read the rule book).
i thought it was duelist kingdom rules at 1st because of the anime, and then got even more confused when i played forbidden memories for ps1. i remember when i 1st started going to card events at books a million playing by duelist kingdom rules everybody thought i was crazy. lol
Nice to see you back
Thank for all you and your crew do to enlighten and entertain us.
I have watched one of your videos in ages but, I'm glad I did it brought me back to a simpler time.
He's back 💪 Great video found it very interesting ☺️
I for one would love to see more tabletop content on the channel in general you always make them so entertaining when they could be boring. Pokémon Master videos are some of my favorites on the channel.
Yo, I had no idea Capsule Monster Chess was revisited in any capacity, that's really neat it managed to get a video game!
Even crazier is how some Konami cards got alt artworks BASED on the Bandai cards!
Namely Dark Magician.
this was an interesting watch. im ho0nestly surprised with how much ive heard of "Season 0" that i have never heard mention of the
gachapon-esque card game.
I've played it and it's pretty good, feeling both similar and different than MTG in a variety of ways.
2:00 you finally summed it up, I was always so confused if they really pivoted like that
DB, Yu-Gi-Oh, the original fans must have such a shift from what it began as and it ended up into
