I like to think Atem chilled out so much between season 0 and when duel monsters kicked off because of Yugi's subtle growth and influence. Yugi befriended two of his bullies and turned them into some of his most loyal friends and in general just became surrounded by much better people. So Atem decided to start giving second chances...or at least stop setting people on fire. The infamous Beserker Soul scene basically shows what happens when Atem gets pissed off and Yugi isn't there to reel him in.
That berserker soul episode is that ss0 Atem moments.
You can see that with the end of the Kaibaland arc. He would be entirely justified in killing him, or at least doing serious damage. However, he chooses to give him a second chance to reform into a better person. This arc continues into the D&D game with Bakura (which may or may not even be in the show, I've never watched it), where the Pharoh expresses great pride in Yugi's courage to put himself on the front line with his friends.
It also makes sense that he’d be way more vengeful when first being broken out of the puzzle, and eventually calming down over time as he gets used to Not being trapped for thousands of years

I loved the actually dark yugi so much more in the old manga. It made so much more sense. Yami Yugi was a pharaoh of ancient Egypt of course he would be judge, jury, executioner. I also really loved the Millennium World volumes.
Both of those were my favorites as well
There was only one thing I hated about that arc, and that was Yugi using Slifer as bait so Seto could try to mark Diabound with his sword.
That was just complete and utter stupidity. Even if that gambit succeeded none of the other priests monsters would have been able to take him down anyway. He threw away a god monster hoping that a bunch of weaker monsters would be able to take Bakura down.
I always wandered why he's called Yami (dark) watching Duel Monsters. Then i started season 0 and i understood. Now i came to know the manga is even more evil, gud. More sense to the name.
Winnie The Pooh it makes more sense then you make of it because with atem being a pharaoh he is then considered as a personification of the god Osiris (same as the god card Osiris which is why atem is so linked to it). And Osiris after his death was made responsible for judging deceased souls on their resting place. In a way the games atem plays are a reflection of the very same test Osiris would perform to judge the soul and character of the deceased.

@@da-vidcargill4975 Well the author originally wanted to do a horror manga which is why Yami Yugi's appearance and actions are very dark. Wish Takahashi would magically have the powers to reboot the series, so it could have that original dark edge.
I dunno. I mean, some of the censorship was really dumb, but I think the “Shadow Realm” was actually a good change. The series has that theme of dark ancient secrets, men playing with powers far beyond their control. And a realm of nothing but a sickly purple haze that eats away at your soul really helps sell that idea. The best censorship of scary concepts are the ones that become even scarier than the original when you come back later
This is what I want
@@spindash64 I feel like we could get a good mixture if they release the episodes uncut but still dubbed. There’s parts where the shadow realm works really well, but others where it feels incredibly out of place, like the duel against Arcana/Pandora’s in battle city, trying to play off a bunch of spinning saw blades as dark energy blades that will send you straight to the shadow realm instead of cutting off your legs is a little off.

You know Yu-Gi-Oh is the most popular card game in human history, right?
Yu-Gi-Oh has held the record for the largest card game tournament like 3 different times. And if you consider the 3 separate 200th YCS tournaments that were being held as a single event, to be a single tournament, then Yu-Gi-Oh currently holds the record with over 10,000 players between the 3 cities. The tournament in Columbus Ohio alone had nearly 3000 players.

For some reason, I now think that Danganronpa was somewhat inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh
Season zeros yami and yugi voice actress actually did one of the Dangaronpa protagonists
_upupupupupu~_
This reminded me of the time Tea was lured into an empty studio only to find some dude waiting to attack her. In the dub he said something like drop your purse and leave but something tells me that if Yami Yugi hadn't interfered, a lot more would have happened.
I remember stumbling upon the first volume as a kid, and I was do weirded out by it. After reading it for a while I realized that I liked this version more than card game stuff. Very interesting to know why the author went in that direction.
I actually read this growing up as a kid. Probably shouldn’t have considering how young I was, but still had a blast reading it.
I remember I always called Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) “Zucchini”, because I didn’t know how to pronounce it.
I'm twelve and would rather have read the original manga. Also, it's Jo-no-chi. Why do people think it's so hard?
Ava Keniley-Browning I was a kid dude, I didn’t know better. I know how to pronounce it now.
The other day, out of habit I said Jonouichi. One of my friends was like, "wut?" And the other just yelled "ANZU" (I kinda looked like her that day...)
Well, shounen jump is pretty much targetted at grade school and junior high kids in Japan so you were probably in the right age group, maybe not the right country (depending on how conservative your country is).
robotroadrage I was like 11, so no.
Ever considered doing a video comparing and contrasting several Yugioh anime scenes and their much darker counterparts in the original manga?
Second that!! Would love to see that!
Third it! (Don't know if that is a thing- don't care. It is now.)
THIRD IT!!!!!
I think one of THE MOST terrifying/awesome moments from the manga is what happened the day Marik went evil. The dad was heating up swords and stabbing them into Odion.
Then Marik went into his alter ego and literally sliced off the skin of his fathers back and threw it onto Odion as a joke. "Hey, you wanted proof of belonging to our family? Here, have my dad's tattoo."
@Toan Greenlow Marik never killed Odion or he wouldn't have been able to bring Marik back to his senses during the finals. He certainly tried, though. He just kept getting interrupted, and eventually they hid him somewhere.
Yandere Alchemist that would be awesome.
takahashi also said in an interview that it was starting to become hard for him to come up with different types of games for every chapter so he decided to focus on the card games instead which was easier.
Thanks to RUclips "most replayed" feature, we can now see that majority are more interested in this shot at 1:29 than the actual video.
"Religious symbols."
Dark Yugi: "Let's play a game! If you die, you lose!"
*BOOM*
Dark Yugi: "Opps, looks like I win. Hehehe..."
I am so happy you talked about the manga, I absolutely love it! It is by far my favourite version of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and I'm glad to see Season Zero get a mention too.
If Yugi asks to play a game of Cheat with you, politely decline and run for your life.
Imagine Atem doing “DORA! MONSTA CARDO!” Every duel but with elaborate, saw-like games and you have season 0 summed up in a heartbeat
Man I remember reading this manga at my high school’s library. I thought it was so different then what I saw on the show.
I honestly would have liked it more like this then the card game. But that’s just me.
"Removal of any religious symbols"
*Zooms into DMG's chest*
The best religion there is
Ushio, the guy who swims in leaves and garbage, is Trudge from 5D's.
Wonder if he still sees leaves as money
@@AxisChurchDevotee probably why we dont see trudge and leaves in the same frame in yugioh 5ds
Considering that the yu gi oh manga was the first manga I've ever read ( my very first book being the 1st volume) it's weird to see people talk about it as something completely unknown.
But it also makes it clear just how many people grew up only watching the anime.
Same! Only for me it was vol 2.
The watered down anime for kids
It was my first as well... Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles was second.
Missed Opportunity: The SHADOWY Origins of Yu-Gi-Oh!
"Wanna play like Season zero?"
"Yeah I guess. Season Zero?"
Moments later
"Darn I lost. But hey good ga.."
*Click click*
"Woe put that down."
"You lose the game. You lose your life."
Intense!!!!
Oh my god the Mokuba part killed me
Brian Smith both Mokuba and Kaiba were psychopaths in the original manga
“dark origins “
they’re literally summoning demons💀
Pro tip: This is also the case in Digimon.
Beelzemon. Yes.
I think the best part of the manga (which you did kind of touch on) is that even after the original seven volumes, during duelist kingdom and beyond, it's still pretty dark. There's stuff like Bandit Keith having his hand grow a revolver barrel to shoot him, Duke/Ryuji having a creepy abusive father, and Dark Marik skinning his father's back and draping it over Odeon/Rishid's body.
An snapping Panic's neck.
That first season of YuGiOh was the true definition of *Yami Game* or *shadow games.* It was very dark, but I enjoy it (except the times when they harrassed the Anzu).
When a Yu-gi-oh fan finds out about season 0 and the manga:
*The Doors of Darkness have opened*
Look like the Yugioh is Dark.
Look like the Dark Magician and Shadow games aren’t the only the Dark thing about the series.
Well Yami does mean darkness
Well its actually Black Magician in original/japan, but change because u know...
@@lswarmruler well yeah because according to 4Kids, black magic doesn't exist. Neither do guns apparently.
"Let me see if you have a knife "
"NO"

This scary part is that kaiba in the show has green hair
Looks brown to me
Yes comdy
How dare you play Duelist of The Roses music in the background. Now excuse me as i dig out my ps2.
Im seriously loving how jwittz is back🤩
Nice music choice Jwittz! I've loved Yu-gi-oh for a long time, so this is a pleasant surprise.
"Yami Yugi literally wants to see the world burn."
I couldn't agree more. Nice video!
I remember this scene in the manga where yugi was playing a game where you use a character and fight others characters using a gadget thing, he was playing against a thief who kept stealing peoples characters and selling them to others. Long story short, the guy lost, his face cracked and the next scene is him passed out in the shadows presumably dead
I too remember the good ol days of Kaiba putting Yugi and friends in a guillotine
Kaiba was being perfectly reasonable. Someone beat him in a card game, so he created a multi-million dollar theme park as a cover-up for violent revenge. I think we'd all do the same in his position.
@@TheJWittz If I were to criticize Death T at all it's that he didn't go the extra mile to create real, living abominations resembling duel monsters and have them terrorize the heroes. I guess we eventually get that in the anime, but it would have been a nice touch.
Eh, he didn't really end it entirely on his own terms. His editor forced him to cut a lot of subplots from Millennium World, which is the big reason why Kaiba's traitor subplot from Battle City went nowhere.
wait, what Kaiba traitor subplot again? I don't remember that one.
i don't remember that part either
When Kaiba first sees the Giant Rock at the museum, he gets a vision of his ancestor fighting the Pharaoh, and it gets expounded on when he and Yugi have their big clash in the Battle City Finals. They made it pretty clear that Kaiba was leading a rebellion to overthrow the Pharaoh, but when the actual arc came, there was no rebellion, just Bakura.
I always imagined that the actual history vs what we saw in Millenium world played out very differently. Millennium World seems more like a new game plus/speedrun scenario considering Yami Bakura's drive to get it over with ASAP.
@@Powerman293 Yeah, it basically may as well be NG+, considering the decisions taken by both Thief King Bakura and Atem
I recognzied that outro music. That's from Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelist of the Roses!
Reading this in 5th grade was an awesome way to get me into this series. My school library had the first 3 of these 3in1 mangas.
Someone: *cheats on a children’s card game*
