The chorus of C-Side's version is reharmonized in such an exciting way, especially the full speed second half of it. The nearly chromatic ascent from one chord to the next is SO good, and it doesn't even resolve, it just leaves you hangin'. It's almost like it's using the unresolved ending of the song as the baseline to the chorus. It's genius! It's my absolute favorite version of the song. Goosebumps every time.

Also, your persona with the inkling "hair" and pseudo beak was really cool and cute to see! Final compliment (so this doesn't get too long), the effects at the end for your outro remake/rendition of "What I love" was unexpected and looks really well done and fitting for the topic/video! Thank you for making this and sharing it
I love the slow, quiet Now or Never you've got in the background a couple times. I never imagined this song played at a mellower tempo, it sounds really great!
something thats really interesting is that if you listen to the global testfire version of Splat 2's Now or Never theres are two vocalists that go back and forth with the singing! Its just curious to see them originally go with that but for the final release they end up just going with the one vocal track. Its also nice hearing the back and forth in splat 3, it definitely adds to it all!
Now that side order is out, I heard that there's some pretty cool music references in the soundtrack- I understand very little of music theory, so I'm hoping scruffy will cover them some time!
Hey Scruffy, this might come off as a bit weird, but I wanted to say - first, I appreciate the extra effort that's been going into your newer videos (the 3D bits and the higher-framerate animation whenever your character pops up) and second, your character is _extremely_ endearing. Always puts a smile on my face to see them. Your videos and the topics covered therein have always been great, and for someone like me, who's no good with music theory, you cover stuff in such a quick, concise, easy-to-follow way - but there's this extra bit of polish you've been applying lately that really makes it all shine, and I like having a face of sorts to put such a soothing voice to.
Your videos are so cool, no pressure but I'm SO hoping that you'll make one about Anarchy Rainbow ? The mixing and use of instruments in this piece is just genius. I wanna learn even more about it with you if able.
I like the cultural influences with deep cut. I was honestly really glad to hear about the Indian influences in frye's music, because her clothes and her boss fight reminding me of snake charmers already made me think that she probably had Indian influences.
fun fact to any fellow splatoon nerds: the actual lyrics to the squid sisters' and off the hook's versions (which by extention includes squid squad's, but not wet floor's, c-side's or deep cut's) are actually available online (they were in some of the releases of the soundtracks or something), so you can actually sing now or never whenever you want! theyre gibberish lyrics though, if youre wondering. it also includes some of their other songs too, but thats besides the point. if you wanna look them up search them in that one splatoon fan wiki.
3:14 I know I'm late to the party but I'd like to point out that now or never from 2 is actually a duet as well! wet floor has two lead singers, ryan and mizole (on the cover art mizole's in the middle and ryan's the inkling next to him). ryan's voice is more feminine while mizole's is more masculine. they're definitely harder to distinguish than baker and kiki but if you listen you can tell ^_^ another fun fact is that ryan is a huge squid squad fan while mizole hates those guys
I honestly hope you cover more Splatoon 3 songs, specifically Clickbait from C-side as it uses that same back and forth vocals that were present in the Turf War now or never if not even more. I think it'll be REALLY cool to go more in depth with that song. Regardless, amazing video as always Scruffy!
Stellar video as always, and some part of me knew a Now or Never followup was in the cards as soon as splatoon 3 launched. Special shoutout to the outro animation+music on this one!
in the lore, C-side's frontman and bassist, Beika, made posts to the splatoon equivalent of twitter claiming that he made now or never first and squid squad stole it from him and did it worse. so yeah i doubt he listened to the other versions for inspiration
In-universe Splatoon Twitter drama is absolutely crazy in concept but I would kill to see the silliness of these fictional people getting into fictional arguments with fictional consequences on a fictional website. Inkling version of Cr1tikal
I'm glad to see a followup to the original video! Just a few things that I thought I'd mention since I haven't seen any other comments bring them up. Splatoon 2's version of Now or Never actually does have 2 different singers, and if you used the Squid Sisters amiibo in Splatoon 1 you could actually here a looped version of the Splatfest Now or Never. I really enjoyed listening to you break this version of the song down though!
One thing I like about Splatoon 3’s now or never is that that last drum hit at the very end lines up almost perfectly with the explosions from all the bombs everyone throws in the final second of the match to claim a little bit more turf. It’s super satisfying and adds extra emphasis on those final moves, as they can completely change which side won.
another thing about the Deep Cut cover that I think is worth mentioning is that it samples horns/alarms/sirens which give it a much stronger sense of urgency and power behind it, making up for the lack of strong power chords that are present in the original and the c-side cover. the song is also given more of a sense of urgency through the chorus becoming a crowd at the end, and also with the final climb of the lydian scale being supported by the alarm sounds signaling that its the last seconds the players have to do anything
The second i heard the new now or never i actually said and even commented "im excited to see scruffy analizing this". Because that end part of the song, after its over, kinda gets rid of the hanging tension
hey scruffy, this video's great! i found your channel originally through the first Now or Never video, so this was a treat to see! keep up the great work!
3:34 That's called the Mario Cadence, right? It helps to show a resolution in a song with the last two flat chords (VIIb and VIIIb) before resolving back to the tonal center. Winning a level in the original Super Mario Bros. shows it, and even Fist Bump from Sonic Forces!
I'm so happy that you made a video about this version of the song. When I originally watched your last video on this topic, I enjoyed it so much. The C-Side version of Now or Never is my favorite across the whole series, and I wondered what you thought about it. It's great that I get to know that answer now!! :D
Scruffy, i’d love to see you cover Frostpunk music and sounds. It’s winter themed and I think it would make a great video! ❤ love splatoon too tho, would love to see more
The way C-Side's rendition of Now Or Never lingers on the second to last note as the match ends as opposed to ending RIGHT on the whistle like the previous two games actually messed up my timing a bit when I first played it lol, I'd be ready to throw a bomb but it was too late!
5:26 I think not releasing the tension was a smart move here, since the players are left hanging for a few more seconds while the final score is tallied
I'm loving what they're doing with the 'main theme' for want of a better term for this game, as well, alongside the now expected tutorial jam session version and main version for the multiplayer of Clickbait we've also got... An almost mournful cello cover in the Big Run lobby and whatever the hell ω-3 has done to it (is that a sample? A remix? A cover? All three at once?) for Big Run itself.
YES ITS SCRUFFY! Man you have no idea how much I love music and motifs, it makes me go :D and the fact that you go so in-depth is sick! Paired with the gorgeous visuals, I gotta admit you’re my favorite youtuber! KEEP BEING AWESOME!!
love that u gave yourself splatoon eyes n it's really appreciated the extra effort that goes into researching international musical styles n techniques also u not resolving your outro motif is a nice touch :>
What I love about Splatoon 3's Now or Never is that the vocals aren't consistent in the song, at all. They feel a bit all over the place and aren't tied to the rhythm of the song like Splatoon 1 or 2's. (This can be heard especially in the first verse) Like in Scruffy's previous video about Now or Never, there's no time for "perfect resolution" or a consistent beat, it's a final rush to get the upper hand and win the Turf War!
I absolutely adore the way Deep Cut reharmonises the song after the chorus. In conjunction with the instrumentation, it conveys the feel of a cultural festival soooooo perfectly, and in my opinion just blows all the other Splatfest versions out of the water.
3:18 to 3:22 opened my third eye with its interpretation of whose voice is the higher/lower one in the band. I really hope Nintendo can confirm this now
I think he’s wrong tho, cuz it’s clear that the male one is the inkling and the high one being the bassfish, cuz the side they are in the audio matches the one in the artwork
Arogustus said you should do a video on Salmon Run music. I know the band behind it is called Omega-B(get it) and specifically the genre of music is typically correlated with irl music of people not liking their government. The salmonids themselves have some pretty interesting lore when you look into it!
I like the breakdown of the music of this video, and how you used the black background to contrast the bright line colors, reminds me of Khan Academy for some reason (also the art here is pretty good too!)
The attention put into Splatoon's music has always been incredible. I'm happy to see a followup to the original video and I hope to see more Splatoon music related videos on this channel!
I forgot about this guy, he's the only contact to advanced music theory I've ever had besides knowing what a Leitmotiv is, I used to gobble his vids up! I mean I genuinely did not know what a key was until a few weeks ago, and I only learned because I'm in a Musical fraternity.
your original video on now or never is actually what got me BIG into splatoon back then like i thougt it was nice before already, was never really into shooters but it was fun nontheless but once i was able to see how much lore is hidden in the music alone, i got absolutely OBSESSED with the worldbuilding of splatoon like indescribably so and i absolutely cannot get enough
maybe it's a small thing, but you resolving the first question at the beginning is something i really appreciate. feeling forced to stay just to hear someone's opinion on something has plagued me a little too hard
I kinda want to see you talk about the Salmon Run music! It's MUCH too confusing for me to figure out myself, haha! I feel like it's a great definition of how to shatter traditional music practices without.... breaking the music??... I don't even know, lol
your original now or never video was so wonderful and honestly a comfort video for me, both because its a topic i hold dear to my heart and your very soothing and insightful commentary. so glad you made this video

Another banger for sure, but you're teasing us hard with that jazzy little undercut of now or never in your own style, something I'm sure we'd all love to hear.
I love your music explanations, it helps me understand music structure more and that it helps me want to make little covers and maybe little original pieces of music of my own.
I'm still amazed by what they did to now or never both during and in the last hours of the splatoon 2 Final Splatfest. Also the Octo Expansion music was so good! I understand that's out of date now but it's awesome to see more splatoon music discussion nonetheless!

I absolutly loved your last Now or Never video and I'm sure this one is Great!
I like the cultural influences with deep cut. I was honestly really glad to hear about the Indian influences in frye's music, because her clothes and her boss fight reminding me of snake charmers already made me think that she probably had Indian influences.
6:41
I thought that was shiver singing? With Frye's vocals chiming in at the end of each held note
fun fact to any fellow splatoon nerds: the actual lyrics to the squid sisters' and off the hook's versions (which by extention includes squid squad's, but not wet floor's, c-side's or deep cut's) are actually available online (they were in some of the releases of the soundtracks or something), so you can actually sing now or never whenever you want! theyre gibberish lyrics though, if youre wondering. it also includes some of their other songs too, but thats besides the point. if you wanna look them up search them in that one splatoon fan wiki.
I adore seeing how much your animation style grows with each video. Very impressive! Keep up the great work!
Small detail, if you win the battle, that final Resolving E plays in the victory song if you win, but plays a lower mix of notes if you lose.
3:14 I know I'm late to the party but I'd like to point out that now or never from 2 is actually a duet as well! wet floor has two lead singers, ryan and mizole (on the cover art mizole's in the middle and ryan's the inkling next to him). ryan's voice is more feminine while mizole's is more masculine. they're definitely harder to distinguish than baker and kiki but if you listen you can tell ^_^
another fun fact is that ryan is a huge squid squad fan while mizole hates those guys
Ever since splatoon 3 was announced, I was hoping there would be another Now or Never video from you. Thanks for your hard work
I honestly hope you cover more Splatoon 3 songs, specifically Clickbait from C-side as it uses that same back and forth vocals that were present in the Turf War now or never if not even more.
That ending graphic! You really went all out : )
Fantastic analysis as always; I’d never pick up on this stuff myself, so I really appreciate it
in the lore, C-side's frontman and bassist, Beika, made posts to the splatoon equivalent of twitter claiming that he made now or never first and squid squad stole it from him and did it worse.
so yeah i doubt he listened to the other versions for inspiration
In-universe Splatoon Twitter drama is absolutely crazy in concept but I would kill to see the silliness of these fictional people getting into fictional arguments with fictional consequences on a fictional website.
Inkling version of Cr1tikal
honey wake up scruffy made another what i love
that "hello!! im scruffy" is just a free serotonin rush to be honest
7:36 subtitles diverge from actual spoken words. subs: “that play before the last three turns.” spoken words: “that play throughout the whole game”
Begging Scruffy to take the little bit at 4:11 and turn it into a full jam session
BABE WAKE UP NEW SCRUFFY VIDEO
We all knew another now-or-never was coming out. *BUT ITS HERE*
The second i heard the new now or never i actually said and even commented "im excited to see scruffy analizing this". Because that end part of the song, after its over, kinda gets rid of the hanging tension
I think that Deep Cut's rendition is probably my favorite version of Now or Never
BABE BABE WAKE UP SCRUFFY OUT WITH A NEW SPLATOON VIDEO BABE PLEASSEEEE
6:40 I thought that was Shiver singing, the second voice sounds more like Frye to me, idk
Been waiting for a sequel of this topic
You put so much effort into these videos and break it down perfectly, I love seeing people analyze Splatoon's music; there's so much to unpack!
hey scruffy, this video's great! i found your channel originally through the first Now or Never video, so this was a treat to see! keep up the great work!
Hey, that's a pretty neat addition!
7:00 The one doing the high notes is Shiver, not Frye.
Thank you for covering Splatoon again, Splatoon needs soo much more recognition for its music and sound work!
7:57 I really liked how it changes the instrumentation for the transition
I discovered this channel recently and I have to say, I absolutely adore the music analysis and the visuals of the videos are amazing
YES ITS SCRUFFY! Man you have no idea how much I love music and motifs, it makes me go :D and the fact that you go so in-depth is sick! Paired with the gorgeous visuals, I gotta admit you’re my favorite youtuber! KEEP BEING AWESOME!!
love that u gave yourself splatoon eyes n it's really appreciated the extra effort that goes into researching international musical styles n techniques
also u not resolving your outro motif is a nice touch :>
GOD this just makes me adore the team's attention to detail even more than I already did! I would love to see your take on Anarchy Rainbow
It always blows me away whenever Scruffy uploads. The sheer amount of effort in each video is astounding!
What I love about Splatoon 3's Now or Never is that the vocals aren't consistent in the song, at all. They feel a bit all over the place and aren't tied to the rhythm of the song like Splatoon 1 or 2's. (This can be heard especially in the first verse)
Like in Scruffy's previous video about Now or Never, there's no time for "perfect resolution" or a consistent beat, it's a final rush to get the upper hand and win the Turf War!
Great video! Just wanted to say that at 6:41 it's shiver singing and not Frye
This is correct.
Glad to see you talk about a splatoon again. One of my favourite games and one of my favourite soundtracks.
I mean I genuinely did not know what a key was until a few weeks ago, and I only learned because I'm in a Musical fraternity.
your original video on now or never is actually what got me BIG into splatoon back then
like i thougt it was nice before already, was never really into shooters but it was fun nontheless
but once i was able to see how much lore is hidden in the music alone, i got absolutely OBSESSED with the worldbuilding of splatoon
like indescribably so
and i absolutely cannot get enough
maybe it's a small thing, but you resolving the first question at the beginning is something i really appreciate. feeling forced to stay just to hear someone's opinion on something has plagued me a little too hard
I've been waiting for Scruffy to do a video on this game's several renditions of the iconic theme... And boy he delivered.
Whenever you make a video, I get emotional and feel like i wanna cry. I dont know why.
Id love to see you check out most of the Leitmotif that are commonly used across all three games
Another banger for sure, but you're teasing us hard with that jazzy little undercut of now or never in your own style, something I'm sure we'd all love to hear.
I love your music explanations, it helps me understand music structure more and that it helps me want to make little covers and maybe little original pieces of music of my own.
The stylization of this video is so crisp! Your videos are always a treat :)
I'm still amazed by what they did to now or never both during and in the last hours of the splatoon 2 Final Splatfest. Also the Octo Expansion music was so good! I understand that's out of date now but it's awesome to see more splatoon music discussion nonetheless!
I really don't understand music shit but i love how these videos are made, and without you, i would have never seen how complexe music composing or music analyzing could be
