There is now probably a music composer out there who is now very happy that they have received some sort of recognition for their very hard work on a small game years ago.
According to google, Wii Play's soundtrack was composed by both Ryo Nagamatsu and Shinobu Nagata. Now, I have no idea what one of them composed this track or if it was a combined effort. If anyone knows, that'd be something I'd like to know.
We also mustappreciate the game designers. It's normally a joint effort between composers and them how to incorporate this sound work into the game. Such stellar collabs! wowow.
I remembered spending MONTHS on the Wii Play Tanks level trying to complete it in one setting. Got so bad that the music was engrained into my head and I memorized what song matched what tank. Been years since, and you talking about it kinda gave me a sorta Vietnam Flashback making me feel like I had unfinished business. Thanks for that mate.
Man, I've put so much time into this game. My brothers and I would compete (and sometimes kill each other), and a couple of us also made pushes into the late game. I probably made it into the 80's and 90's half a dozen times, but I only ever beat level 100 once. I can still hear the music, and the click of the green tank's missiles as they bounce off the wall to come get me. The death music, the next level music, the level up sound, mines activating....it's all burned into my head
That's such a fun fact, I found a video on it: ruclips.net/video/x0uvEidm1EE/видео.html The first example may not be obvious at first, but the brown tank is actually closer to the player in 4:3. Second example in the video is more obvious, where the 2 spaces North and South in 4:3 become 3 spaces in 16:9, literally squishing the whole playing field.
I hold so much nostalgia for this game, and the soundtrack. It is one of those memories I completely forget until something brings it back up. Thank you for bringing it back up.

I love how each tanks effect on the music kind of corresponds with what they do. Example: the red tank fires a ricochet pattern, resulting in two lines of travel for the bullet, and adds two instruments. Yellow tank has mines and adds the bass drum, simulating the explosive sounds in the music
6 of the 9 enemy tank types fire once-ricocheting shells, so that isn't anything special. Plus, the pink tank adds anywhere from 1 to 3 instruments depending on the number of enemy tanks.
Over 100 levels for what could be considered a “WiiMote Demo” mini game, including wildly varying adaptive music… Amazing! And, as always, I find the ingenuity of your character’s design and the fluidity of how they’re animated, absolutely charming~

Not only I'd the music composer very talented, but the programmer who creates the code for what music plays when each tank is added or removed is very clever. There are probably a lot of overlapping loops and conditional statements
Very interesting, I didn’t know Wii tanks was this complex with it’s background music! Amazing how each tank has their own priority and rank with the music instruments.
Didn't expect to get a shot of wii nostalgia. This brought back so many old memories of playing with my sibling. Also I realize I must have gotten to a stage with green tanks because I remember hearing all the double plonks of the ricocheting rockets and also that I didn't make it very far past those levels because I never heard the themes of the more advanced tanks. Think it's kinda strange how my brain held onto the music and sound effects but not that much of the gameplay itself.
Same, I used to play this with my sibling all of the time back in the day. We ended up beating Mission 20 and abandoning it though... I never knew it went up to 100. Time to bring the old Wii back out...
That seems likely yeah, since there's a certain stage where you're up against like 5 green tanks in a claustrophobic set of walls and its just generally a wall of a stage, because yknow, green tanks are the devil
I have heard that the brain remembers music and tunes the best and when one is suffering from dementia, that's one of the last types of memory to go away, so if this is true, that would explain why you remember the sound patterns after all this time.
I think one more rule that applies is that regardless of the tank's metronome condition, the metronome will always be active if there are three or more tanks present (Mission 12 is an example), as if to say "You got tanks to destroy, let's get going!"
one thing I found interesting is that the trumpet fanfare heard at the start of every level is actually in a different key then the rest of the music. It's in Eb major, closer to the trumpets natural key signature and thus sounds more open and vibrant. Unless it's in C minor, which changes to C major for the main piece.
It's a very similar experience when playing the game, after you see the green tanks' absolute bullshit aimbot and ricochets, dying to them many times, and then slowly adapting to their shooting pattern, every time you see a new tank after that, it's terrifying. I remember getting to stage 20 on 1 life, seeing the white tank disappear and just metaphorically shitting my pants. Luckily it was pretty easy by looking at the tank treads. I never got to the black tank haha
This “mini” game was always my favorite and i spent so many hours trying to get to high levels. really interesting how dynamic the music gets and it felt so much more stressful at later levels with all the parts. awesome video!
We were 4 (+1 uninterested) that played this a lot for a while. We weren't particularily good, but we enjoyed it a lot. Had it not been for one of the friends losing vision due to a genetic illness, we would probably have continued playing and beat stage 13. Fun game! Liked the music too.
The idea of live, adaptive, MIDI instruments is absolutely blowing my mind; that possibility has never ever occurred to me… And in a game from 2006!! That’s so awesome.
0:44 - dude. This music is literally in the rithim of the bounces... the beats aling exactly when the ball hits the table and the rackets. With more beats in between to try tricking your ears. I find it really cool
Just a reminder: i love the animated avatar, but I also love your content enough on its own that I'm not dependent on it to keep my interest (the sound of your voice is charming enough for me!). So don't be afraid to leave it behind anytime it becomes a burden to your work schedule!
It might not actually be that much work. That avatar could easily be a 2D rig; If that's the case, it could easily be animated with minimal work from the producers. In fact, a lot of 2D animation these days uses 2D rigs. They don't work for heavy action, or for super detailed animation, but they work very well as time-savers for casual animation where characters are mostly standing and talking.
Yeah I don't love the animated avatar. It doesn't add much, and if anything, it takes away from my imagined versino fo what Scruffy looks like. Plus, in a series about music, it makes sense to have a presenter who only exists as sound.
I’ve seen a handful of other Wii play “Tanks” music rundowns, and i think i learned more from this one than from the others combined. The attention to detail this guy has is beyond that of any other RUclipsr I’ve come across. I’m very impressed!
Yeah, that's par for the course with scruffy. I've watched a lot of RUclips explanations, and it's pretty hard to find someone in the same stratosphere as them.
I don't get it. Every time Scruffy does a video about dynamic music in video games, I simply can not let the video wait in my to watch list. It's way too interesting, and way too greatly made. Thank you Scruffy for making these.
The last time I saw my grandpa, about 5-ish years ago, I played this game with him. The last time I played this game was also then. I haven't heard that tune since then. My heart actually fluttered when that tune came on. Thank you so much for this improvement to my day
OH SCRUFFY!!! There’s another few games… from none other than Wii Fit/Plus/U that have their music change based on progress, though not nearly as complex as TANKS! Table Tilt Hula Hoop Rhythm Parade (Wii Fit Plus Only) (Especially Advanced) Big Top Juggling…maybe (Wii Fit Plus Only) Obstacle Course Perfect 10
I remember back when I was a kid playing this game with my friend and we could never get past level 15. Back then we never even payed attention to the complexity of the music, of course. It is so fascinating how a small game like this has this many layers to it.
Nintendo is almost notorious for having very interesting music, as well as having the music being added in for other parts with many patterns for different stages, I first figured this out in a classic Wii Fit/U minigame called "Obstacle Cource" from many years ago, and each stage added a new part, but I never expected to see anything that took a very long time of thinking
I had a music professor in Videogame Production who said to a classmate "the music of this game isn't complex enought for you to make your essay about it". Oh god, i'm gonna love this video.
Well it’s not really complex, dynamic would be a better word as it changes through the game based on your actions which is what this video explains. You can make an essay on even the simplest music though it not really the goal to be complex either, it’s very fitting for what it was made for and that’s the thing to appreciate. The composer managed to not make it complicated as to not take away from the gameplay but to enhance it.
@@geli95us no he didn't, the profesor was a jerk, so we just did what he wanted (just to pass the subject honestly) through the whole year. I can also say that, in a test, he desacredited mine (and other students) examples of videogames because he didn't played them.

This entire video had me sitting for legit 9:42 straight up thinking about the memories I had playing that game during the hot summers with my brother. Scruffy just single handedly made my week
Amazing video, Scruffy! I always thought Tanks was an underappreciated gem when it came to smaller Wii games. All the other games on Wii Play are good, but Tanks was something else, so much so that it would be really nice to see it get some sort of installment in the near future. Though I don't think I even remotely made it close to stage 20 growing up, let alone get through the absolute plethora of stages.
The original tank loop song made me. That was the ONLY Wii game my sister would ever play with me, we played for hours and it really symbolized our relationship at the time. That music brought me back to those times! Awesome video
As a kid I did notice the music changing, but never realized how complex it actually was. Tanks was definitely my favorite game from Wii Play, and one of my favorites of the Wii, period.
I am so happy someone is finally talking about this, not only was the tank game pure bliss to play, the music was great as well for almost every mini game and adaptiveness is always 100x better than normal tracks.
I have bizarrely strong memories of going to a friend's house, playing this, and getting stuck on what I now know to be the fifth stage (having forgotten). The teal tanks were a nightmare.
I don’t remember the stage (could be the one you’re talking about), but you’re left in a small square surrounded by holes with a horde having their sights on you, truly terrifying
@@titan1umtitan That would be Mission 4. I find it interesting to think that there are “Tanks!” players who literally didn’t know that yellow tanks exist until they watched this video
Rewatching this for background audio, and I just noticed the scuba gear from the Subnautica & Snell's Window video can be seen in the "main menu" at 0:17! Gotta love that call-back. ;P
This is so nostalgic. A few years ago, my brother and I made a spreadsheet of the instruments associated with the tanks, but we missed a lot of the nuances that this video covered.
7:40 I don't think you understand what you've done too me.... last year I hacked my wii and I downloaded wii play, I loved the tank game as a kid and i decided to try and beat it. After a week or two I hit 20 and celebrated....I did not know there's 80 more levels I had been missing out on.
This was my favorite game to play whenever the Wii first came out. I played it with my cousin for hours ti hours on end, trying to beat the final level
the nostalgia hits hard with this one :'D really cool how a few short segments and some simple rules can create such dynamically adapting background music
this is insanely complex LMAO. i hope when you need something simpler to talk about, you do a short (probably less than 5 minute video) about pikmin 2's cave themes and their random measure selection. really well done video and the visuals are super helpful in describing whats going on, i used to love wii play tanks. edit: now that i think about it, have you ever done a video on the just basic overworld themes of pikmin and how they change based on what the pikmin are doing and time of day? its not crazy complex like wii play tanks, but it seems like something you would have covered - maybe i just can't find the video though
Thank you. I'm a game dev and have composed all of the music in my games... this is brilliant and I'll be implementing this in my future projects. Seriously, thank you!
me and my cousins spent HOURS beating tanks at my grandparents’ house where the wii was. always wondered how that same tune was not insanity inducing as we played and replayed every level.
Damn that's impressive. First off, 14 years after I first played it this is the first time I even knew Tanks had 80 extra levels, let alone music that complicated!
The amount of effort You, DavoGato and Wolfgang put in these videos are things that I adore and appreciate to the end. You could just pop gameplay footage and I would've been fine with that but I love the extra mile you guys add
I never thought the music was actually this fascinating and complicated. But the most mind blowing thing for me is that I thought that stage 20 was the last stage throughout my entire childhood... So whenever I get to that stage I just do a little celebration like yay I finished the entire minigame. But you tell me now after what.. 5 YEARS that YOU CAN CONTINUE TO STAGE 80??? Guess who's going to boot up their wii and finish this once and for all. Edit: typo (said minigames)
I love it when mini games turn out to not be mini but little thrillers on their own. I really wanna play Wii tanks being a tank enthusiast myself, though while I have an old Wii, I don’t know where to find this game

This is amazing work that you broke it down. I have always been noticing those patterns in different gameplay design but never thought this clear about it, thanks!
Dude this is so cool! I had noticed the subtle music changes when playing, but I just figured they were tied to how far in you were or how many tanks were left, not that it would be changed based on a whole bunch of requirements and priorities! Ahhh, now I wanna go back and play this again, Tanks was my favourite game of Wii Play and now I have even more reason to love it!
Excellent and informative video! Music is one subject that I think is pretty underrated when it comes to video games so finding someone who actually talks about them in such detail is a breath of fresh air

I have heard that the brain remembers music and tunes the best and when one is suffering from dementia, that's one of the last types of memory to go away, so if this is true, that would explain why you remember the sound patterns after all this time.
*_plink_* *_plink_* *BOOM* restart...
69 likes, nice.
I used to play this game a lot growing up, and multiplayer is fun too. But I never knew there were stages after 20.
SAME!! When he showed that there were 80 levels after you finished the first twelve I gasped. Like what the FUCK
@@codyfarkas7673 twenty*
It's great to know that little me wasn't stupid for genuinely thinking the Wii play tanks theme was a bop
it's not often a video make me feel like "WHAT THERE IS ANOTHER TANK? AND HE DO SYNTHETIZER?! AMAZING!"
I chuckled.
We should play sometime bro
We were 4 (+1 uninterested) that played this a lot for a while. We weren't particularily good, but we enjoyed it a lot. Had it not been for one of the friends losing vision due to a genetic illness, we would probably have continued playing and beat stage 13.
Fun game! Liked the music too.
@@JaharNarishma I think 13 was the one I got stuck on as a kid lmao
@@JaharNarishma you can get it for free on PC and try to run it back.

The idea of live, adaptive, MIDI instruments is absolutely blowing my mind; that possibility has never ever occurred to me… And in a game from 2006!! That’s so awesome.
Rock Band has this.
It's a PS2 game.
0:44 - dude. This music is literally in the rithim of the bounces... the beats aling exactly when the ball hits the table and the rackets. With more beats in between to try tricking your ears.
I find it really cool
rithim isn't a word lol u mean rhythm
it's not tho
I think they purposely didn’t do that for whatever reason. But it’s definitely not on beat
Wait, I don't get ut
Yeah I don't love the animated avatar. It doesn't add much, and if anything, it takes away from my imagined versino fo what Scruffy looks like. Plus, in a series about music, it makes sense to have a presenter who only exists as sound.
I’ve seen a handful of other Wii play “Tanks” music rundowns, and i think i learned more from this one than from the others combined. The attention to detail this guy has is beyond that of any other RUclipsr I’ve come across. I’m very impressed!
Where are the other videos about it?
Yeah, that's par for the course with scruffy. I've watched a lot of RUclips explanations, and it's pretty hard to find someone in the same stratosphere as them.
@@kyarumomochi5146 Ditto.
Table Tilt
Hula Hoop
Rhythm Parade (Wii Fit Plus Only) (Especially Advanced)
Big Top Juggling…maybe (Wii Fit Plus Only)
Obstacle Course
Perfect 10
I remember back when I was a kid playing this game with my friend and we could never get past level 15. Back then we never even payed attention to the complexity of the music, of course. It is so fascinating how a small game like this has this many layers to it.
I had no clue the music in this game was so complicated. Goes to show that Tanks truly is the best Wii Play game
Dude, the absolute NOSTALGIA I got from this was astounding. Great vid!
This production is next level. Wii Play is a great game! Good stuff.
5:45 That ricochet sfx still haunts me to this day.
I had a music professor in Videogame Production who said to a classmate "the music of this game isn't complex enought for you to make your essay about it". Oh god, i'm gonna love this video.
Did he do it in the end?
@@jayhips625 i mean, i bet i could fill a 4 pages (which he asked for) essay about the music of this game, saying "it's not complex enough" it's just so... arrogant and mediocre.
@@hilalstein4236 well you can right 4 pages on literally anything. To be fair he might not have known how it changes with the gameplay and thought of it simply as a game soundtrack. But obviously you said he never played them so sadly he just brushed it off from his lack of knowledge. It was probably his goal to get people away from video games and into a frame of mind when he was younger learning about it but most people younger would not care about his experience just as he doesn’t understand theirs.
I actually love this game. Used to play it all the time. Thanks for making this video
Not sure if you'll read this, but honestly I really appreciated the exaggerated delivery at 7:50. I know that your persona for these videos is much calmer, but that juxtaposition made it a whole lot funnier. wanna hear more voices like that now lol.
Whoa, as someone that does a few of my own RUclips videos, I wanna pay respects how incredible this video is. The concept is not only fluid but the combination of animations, understanding the musical layers, and increasing complexity made me literally say wow multiple times. The level of effort for this video is insane. Well done you guys 👏👏👏 immediately subbed forever
Though I don't think I even remotely made it close to stage 20 growing up, let alone get through the absolute plethora of stages.
duuuude the invisible tank level was so difficult for me i’ve only ever gotten to it once or twice, watching this video is so nostalgic
The original tank loop song made me. That was the ONLY Wii game my sister would ever play with me, we played for hours and it really symbolized our relationship at the time. That music brought me back to those times! Awesome video
Ew.
@@wetube6513 Oh, get your head out of the gutter.
@@wetube6513 saying ew says a lot more about you than it does them lol
As a kid I did notice the music changing, but never realized how complex it actually was. Tanks was definitely my favorite game from Wii Play, and one of my favorites of the Wii, period.
Scruffy’s “hello” is one of the closest things to instant happy I’ve found in my 23 years of living..
Kinda sad life ye got tbh
@@AdeneTzr so do you
I am so happy someone is finally talking about this, not only was the tank game pure bliss to play, the music was great as well for almost every mini game and adaptiveness is always 100x better than normal tracks.
I think we also need to acknowledge how surprisingly complex this video was and how well it was done. Massive Kudos!
1:48 holy crap the wave of nostalgia that hit me when I heard this. Tanks used to be one of my absolute favorites on the Wii.
I've always loved the sound of the tank game. Mix of toy and army march
3:18 (eight year old me is screaming out of fear.)
Level 20 or level 100?
@@trickytreyperfected1482 we beat level 20, but not level 100. I think we got to 72 but stopped
Same. He tried for hours trying to get past the final level. Finally did. Never picked up the game again lol.
the nostalgia hits hard with this one :'D
really cool how a few short segments and some simple rules can create such dynamically adapting background music
this is insanely complex LMAO. i hope when you need something simpler to talk about, you do a short (probably less than 5 minute video) about pikmin 2's cave themes and their random measure selection. really well done video and the visuals are super helpful in describing whats going on, i used to love wii play tanks.
edit: now that i think about it, have you ever done a video on the just basic overworld themes of pikmin and how they change based on what the pikmin are doing and time of day? its not crazy complex like wii play tanks, but it seems like something you would have covered - maybe i just can't find the video though
Thank you. I'm a game dev and have composed all of the music in my games... this is brilliant and I'll be implementing this in my future projects. Seriously, thank you!
how great the time was spending an entire day to finish 100 levels in one sitting
me and my cousins spent HOURS beating tanks at my grandparents’ house where the wii was. always wondered how that same tune was not insanity inducing as we played and replayed every level.
Damn that's impressive. First off, 14 years after I first played it this is the first time I even knew Tanks had 80 extra levels, let alone music that complicated!
Everybody’s known how and why the music changes but seeing it explained in detail is something I never knew I needed
This game deserves it's own release.
6:22 Me, a percussionist: *Badass sobbing *
Edit: typo (said minigames)
does it not continue to stage 21 the second time you complete stage 20?
You can continue to Mission 100, since 80 more than 20 is 100.
I've always remembered this detail in the tanks game. It literally encourages the player to get better to find out what the next instrument is!
This game's soundtrack has been living in my head EVERY DAY for years. I love it. It's great.
I thought I was the only one
Although it hasn't actually been years
I love it when mini games turn out to not be mini but little thrillers on their own. I really wanna play Wii tanks being a tank enthusiast myself, though while I have an old Wii, I don’t know where to find this game
I'm actually making the soundtrack for an upcoming game, and we're implementing adaptive/dynamic music similar to this!
What game?
Good luck!
Never thought I'd see Wii Play's Tanks on this channel, but you did a damn good job covering it.
Tanks for the Switch maybe?
@Master Shifu That's not really the same. They are both pretty damn different from eachother.
There aren't many stages plus you can lob shots over walls. Generally moving is slower, too
I'm really impressed that this channel already has 346k subscribers, usually channels like this that are focused on niche topics especially music and sound theory have at most 50k subscribers, it's not all that surprising I suppose, these videos ooze with an unique style that's both minimalistic and bold at the same time that makes it easier to possess information on screen and keep your attention simultaneously. Fantastic work!
I used to play this game religiously when I was like 5 or 6. This music still gives me anxieties like I have digital war PTSD
The way you used the short 1 second “stage complete/game over” bit for transitions was the best use of that sound you could’ve possibly had
This is awesome! A friend and I played this a ton back in the day. Looking back years later now that I’m composing my own music I have a totally new appreciation for this gem of a mini game. Patiently waiting for the grand Tanks 2 Nintendo Direct reveal…
I’ll second that. For Tanks 2.
That was a sick video dude. I love how random but surprisingly complex this games music was. Maybe I never noticed because of how bad I was
I can't describe how excited I get from watching one of Scruffy's videos. They're entertaining, educational, and itch my love for music/audio. Keep up the high quality work Scruffy!
I never beat tanks but I came very close to level 100 with making it to level 92. This video is putting me on edge with the many hours of scraping by with 1 or 2 lives left dealing with trick-shoots in difficult positions.
Ahhh, now I wanna go back and play this again, Tanks was my favourite game of Wii Play and now I have even more reason to love it!
this game is so nostalgic to me. i only get to play it about 1 time a year and seeing somone go in debt of the music makes me very happy :)
Excellent and informative video! Music is one subject that I think is pretty underrated when it comes to video games so finding someone who actually talks about them in such detail is a breath of fresh air
Never realised how 'complicated' the music is in Wii Play. Mesmerising and Nostalgic.
I always love it when games do this. Adding more melodies to just one song and removing some when appropriate adds personality to certain situations.
1:18 SMM2 ID to a Mario Maker tank course made by scruffy.
I've heard this track before but I never knew ot was this complex! That was super interesting and very nicely explained
I was sitting here, bored out of my mind, wondering if I could find something gold to watch and sure enough, a video that would bring tears to my eyes the whole way through emerged!
Thank you for bringing back my childhood in a whole new way.
respect for actually making it through those stages and listening to music while tryharding. Those minigames may be simple but they get harder and harder to the point of insanity
