An absolute honour to hear him speak. Everything he says is gold. A true scholar. I'd love it if he started giving lectures on certain topics he's interested in.
I really feel for the guy who's asking the questions but he really is trying to hard to be professional he just needs to relax and ask questions like he's having a conversation with him instead of robotic.
Salute Akala, either way using your voice to shine a light on to so many different levels of thinking. God bless you and your sister. Speaking on things that matter. May the ancestors protect unu.
Akala, I love you. You are a beautiful human being and your words are music to my ears. You are living proof that knowledge is power or, to be more precise, applied knowledge is power.
I agree with him 100% without any "but, if, wait a minute..." That is so true. I so wish the majority of the global population could think things through like that.....oh well.
The story of David Oluwale is indeed very tragic :( The officers who killed him weren't convicted of murder, or manslaughter, or GBH... instead they were charged with assault and were given 3 years and 27 months respectively. There's a book about his case called The Hounding of David Oluwale if anyone wants to read up on it.
I went to school with Akala when I lived in the UK ( I am Irish) and one thing I have to say is that the white/black thing is not the only issue, the actual issue is colonialism and I, as a white Irish Traveler have experienced the direct effects of it in the same way. The problem I have with what he says is that for example, Ireland has had it's language suppressed and continues to have it suppressed in Norther Ireland where racism is very much alive. Irish Traveler still have a huge amount of racism being propagated openly without any remorse. If the issue is color and what 'white people' do then where does that leave people like myself from a country that has had nothing to do with colonialism or the enslavement of black people?
Glad Somone brought this up, I'm of the same mind. Both my parents are Irish but i was schooled and live in the UK. My Irish history is intertwined with the same History as the other colonies, the first to be sent to the Jamaican colony as slaves were Irish. Never taught about in british schools are the stories of "The Black and Tans" para-military death squads sent to ireland by Churchill in the 1920s to terrorise the Irish population. This term "white people" lumps me in with the colonisers dispite being on the sharp end of colonialism. ***** These ignorant phrases like "pride in being white", "white ego" and my personal fave "No honest white can truely say that they are not racist", just helps to misframe the issue and make further racial devisions. what have you to say to that?
Leodinium X Racial division exist already, whether you like it or not. Also my history of colonisation and slavery is no way intertwined with your history. Your worldview is still Eurocentric, but for most Afrikans our worldview isnt Afrikan centred, rather Eurocentric. I am not here to flatter your white ego
***** I never denied racial devision exists, it does, but not just between "white people" and afriacans. That is a gross over simplification. Globally between the capitalist opressor and the oppressed masses. Rich vs Poor. Black or white. And don't get me wrong I'm not Denying black struggle has been a massive part of the last 400 years. Globally. I'm just saying it's part of a bigger narrative. Also your wrong on Ireland there, Ireland still has a lower population in 2014 (4.5 million) than it did before the famine (6.5 million) in 1841. Most of its population are scattered all over the world. It's estamated that there is a population of 80 million claiming Irish roots worldwide, in fact look up the term "redlegs" on Wikipedia. Believe me you ain't flattering anyone with your ego centric ignorance. It's ironic. I know about African struggle and Irish struggle being against British oppression, exploitation, the slave trade and independence, being joined. Because I'm not only interested in a "eurocentric" picture because I live on Earth not just. Europe or Africa. Tell me what about Indian independance. Where do they stand in you polarized world view?
Leodinium X Chip..., get lost.. You think I dont recognise you? Your usual white paternalism is rearing its ugly in your commentaries. Also there is the faux stories about how you are helping to implement anti racism policies, working with Pan Afrikanist and your suppose Afrikan partner. Eight months after giving birth, here you are like the patronistic racist, that you will alway are, stalking me. You know nothing about the Afrikan struggle, the Afrikan struggle is nothing like the Irish struggle. Other than having similar coloniser, we share nothing. So please dont try to particularise a fake similarity between the Irish and the Afrikan people, in reality there is none. And you no what, I dont have to particularise the Afrikan struggles with your other white individual like yourself. I will not be accommodating your white gaze, like i have done in the past. Pavee Gypsy aka +Leodinium X, you can fuck off. I will not cater to your white narcissism and white privilege.
Akala made it clear that it isn't an issue or race, more an issue of class; hence why he gave the example of the reparations going to the black elite in Jamaica being unjust
B.N.B. So you think Britain is rampantly racist? Ok right. Maybe these people who say these things live in shit communities surrounded by scum. Because i have grown up in a normal, working class area, and i have yet to this racism where i am from...
I recommend all to see Zeitgeist Addendum, so people can stop seeing race and see us all as 1 people on 1 planet cause nature dont know the color of the skin, if there is a flod is doesent stop because of your color we should all help each other cause we all need the same things, food, water, shelter, love, safety no matter what color skin u got, i myself is half etiopian and half danish, so where is my box ? :D Ignorance breeds prejudice and knowlegde brings understanding. 1 people 1 planet 1 love! Zeitgeist Movement ! please watch "Zeitgeist Addendum" cause money and scarity is the root of so many problems we face today. Knowlegde is power
My Query is this, when governments of former colonies make claims for reparations on behalf of those who are presumed to be descendants of slaves do they also claim reparations from states like saudi arabia, Dubai, Kuwait or other states in the middle east, because one of the biggest slave trading empires was Arabic, centred around Oman. So if the white man is culpable for the atrocities commited under slavery surely Arabs having captured and sold them to us are equally as culpable? Do they also seek reparations from African countries? Because it is a well documented fact that African kingdoms sold their own people into slavery (Granted they were mostly battle captives or criminals) to garner trade goods an favor with foreign powers? So again these people are equally culpable in this heinous period of our shared heritage do they also have to pay? How about the barbary pirates or ottoman empire who captured an kept white people from as far afield as england ireland and scandinavia as slaves - Can we now petition turkey, libya etc etc for monies for reparations for our ancestors? People seem to have this shared delusion of the past that the only slave owners were white people an somehow we went to africa with big nets an lasso's an caught a bunch of people an just carried them off to far foreign lands, Casting blame on one ethnicity without admitting your own shared guilt is moronic and counter productive. Those who dont learn from the past are doomed to repeat it, so as long as we drag up reasons to segregate our selves into packs so long we will be sepreate an there will be hate recriminations an violence.
No carribean nation was formed by Arab imperialism, each of those countries are dealing with the colonial powers that brought them in to existence and benefitted from and still do benefit from their exploitation. Arab imperialism inside of Africa is an important issue to be tackled but a separate issue. White supremacist Germany had to pay to the whole of Europe after WW2, no one is suggesting that because England and France were previously in war that the rules of reparations dnt apply to you because in that conflict we had whites killing other whites. At the end of the day blacks weren't only enslaved they had to pay reparations to white nations for their loss of earnings and then underwent white terrorism for at least another 100 yrs.
Mikel Truss Ok, i will admit there is a very strong case for reparations for evils done hundreds of years ago now during the time of slave trading. However i feel that it should be shared equally by all those who are guilty of slavery not just the most obvious. Because allthough they didnt found the colonies they were an intricate part of the system without whom it would have been alot harder to aquire slaves. Also taking haiti as an example, its ranked as one of the most corrupt governments on the planet, so any reparations in money will likely not go to the people who most deserve it but will be shared by a corrupt elite. Feel it would be better if the country's responsible did something like favourable trading, wiping out deficits and paying for scholarships etc etc things that would actually help rather than make bureaucrats richer.
Mikel Truss Also (sorry for the long arse post btw) i feel that the reality of slavery should be taught in schools, because whats taught so far is that all the onus all the weight of slavery falls squarely on white shoulders that in effect its all our fault. We're not taught in school that the first slaves taken to the new worlds were white (mostly irish) or the participation of arab slave traders, or that often africans sold there own kind. to many of my friends theres this notion that we went to africa with big nets and just kidnapped people (which is ridiculous) and that once america freed its slaves the whole thing was over rather than the last nation to declare slavery illegal was muaritania in 2007. Basically i don't want recriminations and revenge i want fairness and acknowledgment of the actual history of this brutal period.
22coza Ok, this is alot but you gave me alot to respond to. I would Agree with Akala in response to your first post, Elites and descendents of elites shouldn't get reparations, hardly anyone is suggesting that all ppl should have entitlement but the problem is is that the outlines for reparations are rarely understood because many white ppl and western establishments shut down the conversation before its begun. The general response is that black ppl want a hand out or something their not owed. What also should be understood is that slavery did not end in the 1800s, it was replaced by a new and efficient system of colonization which lasted up untill the 90s in South Africa. We wnt even go into the oppressive forces of the IMF and world bank... As for the Irish, I have no problem with them stating their claim, I have had numerous ppl tell me what about the Irish as mode of shutting down the discussion as opposed to a means of seeking solidarity. Black ppl agree with the Irish right to equality and justice and that is for Irish ppl to determine how to fight that fight. U make mention of the fact that we are only taught about the white slave trade in relation to blacks. This may in part be true but the much bigger issue is that the little that we are told is usually a half truth or a lie like the reasons why slavery was abolished, who got paid when it was all over, what companies today were established on the slave trade ( Barclays, Lloyds, Tate and Lyle etc etc...). The reason this alternative history about white indentured servitude isn't taught in schools is not the fault of black ppl but the fault of white institutions who want to preserve their integrity as a nation and would prefer to maintain the idea of whiteness as a ideological hierarchy. Again you mention Mauritania in Africa when the law suit around reparations is being made by the Caribbean islands... Different topic. I am in no way a defender of Arab imperialism any more than I am European imperialism but I also understand that these issues must be fought one step at a time and its not for nations that benefited to tell exploited nations how they should prioritize their grievances, especially when those powerful nations are still in the process of bleeding those countries dry. Im not sure if you or some are suggesting that Europeans came over to Africa and black people just started handing over their babies? Europeans went to Africa with the sole intention of exploitation, the slave trade was going to happen with or without the assistance of sellouts and willing participants. Of course there were black elite collaborators and tribal divisions which were easily exploitable but there was also many tribes who refused to trade and fought to the bitter end. When it is said that they just sold each other what many manage to miss is the many components of what was involved in these trade offs. Some tribes had no choice under the weight of the invaders, in most cases tribes who were involved were selling other tribes and not their own, this would be like saying Germans were killing their own when they killed 23 million Russians when in fact they were very different tribes of people regardless of colour. You may know some Jews were involved in the policing of their own communities in Poland and parts of Germany in service of the Nazis, with this being said would anyone make the claim that Jewish people shouldn't have been compensated because some Jews worked against their own communities. Asking for whats owed to a ppl who are still suffering as a result of one of the worlds biggest exploitations in human history is not revenge or recriminations. Its fair and any reasonable person would see that..
The youngest person to take gcse in uk was a 5 year old asian girl and a 7 year old white boy was the first to get a A star, so he's telling lies again
used to respect akala but the fact he talks about Britain as being racist and the fact he points out white people as the racist ones he really has gone down in my estimations.
Akala is mixed race and must have more white than black heritage. Which is cool, but why does he refer to himself as black? I never understood that. Why not mixed? He isn't more black than white.

***** I didn't answer the question "since when did whites accept colour on technicality?" because it has nothing to do with me or what I wrote. He said he was lived with only his mum in an interview. once upon a time laugh out loud how he know what was he a time traveler n forget reading the books haha but im saying though does any body find the man speaking upperclass english saying bare n innit funny and at the same time annoying haha

I don't see why everyone's disagreeing with him; his point about the relationship between language and class is bang on correct
Been so long since I last listened to Akala... Man have I been missing out
Akala is an intelligent brother who really thinks deeply, you can tell this from the way he speaks. Much love and admiration for him.
I really feel for the guy who's asking the questions but he really is trying to hard to be professional he just needs to relax and ask questions like he's having a conversation with him instead of robotic.
I reckon he re-recorded the question bit after the interview
maybe so it does seem like it.
Haha@all the people saying he hates white people just because he's 100% honest about everything, He doesnt butter it up, just says it as it is. Big up
Bro drops the science hardcore!
i fucking love this guy

Would love to see him do a talk on sexism/misogyny
He has songs on it
Yes that would be great. He strikes me as a non sexist guy
Whether you like him or not, you have to confess that Akala is very knowledgeable
I love when facts are brought to table.
Akala, I love you. You are a beautiful human being and your words are music to my ears. You are living proof that knowledge is power or, to be more precise, applied knowledge is power.
Owe you an apology for other messages hadn't seen all your words until now thanks for putting it real re post more of this

The restriction of 'bare' and 'innit' is sort of like the restriction of language by the party in 1984.
