I used to use plain aluminum hooks. Then I got my first Clover, and I would never go back. I can crochet longer and faster now. I Love my Clovers!

I, too, crochet for hours. I finally found a place that was willing to make a custom hook that perfectly fits my hand. I love, love, love it. It is shaped to fit my hand perfectly. It has revolutionized my crocheting time and drastically reduced hand fatigue. They are expensive, so I can only buy a couple each year. But, it's worth it. I've used most of the hooks that you've reviewed. Thank you for the time it took to test all of these hooks and putting together the video.

2nd time learning as an adult and hopefully able to continue this time. I was debating between Clover, Tulip, Furls because I have a decent ergonomic set but it is rubbing on my skin and bothersome to me. Furls look beautiful and I thought I may possibly spoil myself if I looked into them and decided upon them. I use a neck lamp and I noticed the hook end seemed so shiny- no one other than you so far has mentioned that. Tulip rubbing I hadn't heard mentioned before and I noticed the label and wasn't a fan. So with all of that I have ordered the Clover set. Thanks for this review I appreciate it.

I will say with my Furls that it took some getting used to. Now that I am though I love my Furls. I have 5 Odyssey and one Streamline Swirl and I like working with them more than my other hooks. That being said, we're all different and like different hooks. If you're not satisfied with your Furls hooks you can easily return them and Furls will even send you a prepaid label and the box. They have a no questions asked 100% satisfaction guarantee. I had to exchange a couple of mine and it was very easy. Plus you can use that money on some pretty new yarn that you'll love.

Holy cow, I just realized I have crocheted for 50 years too! I really did not think it was so long. But i have spent more time sewing, embroidering, quilting, and creating fine art, so now I am doing crochet again. Need to find what my arthritic hands (and whole body) can handle. I must create to live.

I love crochet but my hands swell and hurt really bad but I can crochet longer with the Clover hooks. I now have 2sets and a set of the larger ones. Thanks for the review and I think the Furl hooks are beautiful but not for me..

I so much LOVE Clover hooks! After buying just one to try it out, I fell in love! The 'ergonomic' set I had purchased were just fine for me, I thought...until I had that Clover in my hand! Wow! Game changer! Sooooo smooth, and works any yarn like butter! I now own a complete set, and 2 of my best friend crocheters are now my Clover buddies, too! They, too, are amazed at the difference! Thank you for your review - I wanted to try the expensive brand, but now you've shown me they really wouldn't work for me, no matter how 'pretty'!

As a kid, I learned on Boye hooks (pencil grip) as well. Then took a 20-year hiatus to knit things as I thought crocheting made my hand cramp.
Then recently, I decided to pick crochet back up but needed new hooks. I picked up the set of 10 Clover Amour hooks and learned how to knife grip. Let me tell ya, I’ve fallen back in love with crochet AND I agree that my Clover hooks are still my favorite hooks. I’ve tried them all and always return to my Clovers.
I have huge man hands and the handles on the Clovers aren’t an issue at all.

Jeanne I totally agree with you Clover is to me the best hooks to use as a close second the Susan Bates with the rubber handle but only use this hook when the yarn is inclined to split. It was such a nice chat about hooks and from our podcasts the Furls hook is for the prestige and not the comfort xxx

Has anyone other than me discovered the wonderful use of flex tape around your favorite hook? Use as much or little as desired to conform to your hand. It is easily removed without residue. Flex wrap is somewhat sticky and is the exact answer I have searched for; cost effective too boot. My Boye has never felt better. No other hook irrespective of price feels better than my personalized hook. Try it.

I totally agree with you about the furls hooks. A lot of people love them, but in my opinion they are just not a good value for money. They are waaaay to expensive. And I do have a feeling that it is the feel of luxury that draws people to them. In terms of comfort - they are not comfortable. They are also way too fragile - if you pay that much for them, you want them to last. It kinda feels like they're pieces of art that you need to display and not use...
Oh, and of course, J. Hook is the best hook 😉

I love the Furls Odyssey because I actually need the weighted hook, but it’s not for everyone. The other handle that is a big ball used to be my favorite, but the material holds your hand oils and gets sticky over time.

I like the Knitters Pride Zing hooks. I order them from Handsome Fibers. Great prices, low shipping cost. They usually ship the same day you place your order. I can’t say enough good things about this family owned business. 🧶

  • @sandygrogg1203

I have heard so many people say that they really, really wanted to love their new Furl hooks, but in all honesty, could not. ... I believe people buy them simply because they think they need to keep up with everyone, snd get “the best”.
I used my well loved Susan Bates hooks foe years...dud nit care for the Boye hooks. My hands are very small, so I avoided anything with a handle...My SB Sikvatones were perfect for me... Then....I broke down and bought a Clover hook...probably an H-8...
and never looked back... I have seven if them now...bought them one or two at a time...
I keep my SB hooks...as backups...but treasure my Clovers. I have glaucoma, so my vision is not good...I love that my Clovers sizes are color coded....even the DON’s are color coded... I have no problem selecting the hook I need.
No Furls for me... They are over priced, and sometimes the quality just isn’t there...Besides, I actually tried my friend’s. Odyssey ...she loves it...but has large hands...and it felt very awkward in my hand...
    Thanks for a thoughtful review.

Thank you so much for your crochet hook review. I totally agree with you that of all the hooks that I have used, I prefer the clover hook hands down. I haven’t tried as many as you have, but I find a lot of difference in each brand of crochet hook & I also need one that is easy to use, doesn’t tire my hand, is reasonably light & has the bumps in the right place without any disturbance in the smoothness of the handle. Thank you for taking the time to do this review. Cheers 💕👏❤️🥰😊😍

Hi Jeanne! I have had the same hook journey - I started with Susan Bates, graduated to the aluminum hook with the wooden handle (which I actually really liked because it gave kind of a balancing lever feeling) and then happened upon the Clover Amour hooks. I fell in love with the amour. 😂. They are so ergonomic that I barely have to grip it at all, which is great for my arthritic hands. Your assessment of the Furles hooks is helpful. I'd thought about trying one but after seeing reviews like yours, I think I wouldn't like them as much as I do the Clover. I do like the Prym hooks, which weren't available when you did this video 3 years ago. Prym are nice and I'll use them on certain projects, but I like the way the metal of the Clover slides through all types of fiber. Thanks for your review and I'm definitely going to check out your pattern for that beautiful scarf!

I came upon your channel because I’m looking for better hooks. I bought Furls Streamline and have not been impressed. I just ordered a few other brands: Tulip, Lykke and Clover. Based on your review, I have the most faith in the Clover but we’ll see :)
For the Divit, one of my favourite crocheters, Tamara from Moogly, suggested trying to rub wax paper over grippy wood hooks. Might be worth a try.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Susan Bates Crystalites and all of her other ones!!! 🥰👍🏼 I would NEVER pay more than a hook is worth. I always check reviews but first I check with those I know that frequently use certain hooks or knitting needles. The furls I'm COMPLETELY on the fence about, I think they are mostly about looks and not about usage. Just my opinion. I can't say ALL of them because a hook should NOT be heavy. I'm not sure if I'm alone there in that opinion?🤷🏼‍♀️ plus it should be durable of course if it costs so much $$? The same goes with knitting needles💆🏼‍♀️.... 💎💎💎Great Review Jeanne!!!! I AGREE COMPLETELY with you!! 💞🥰👍🏼🧶

I have several different hooks-- even from England that are old. First, it depends on how you hold your hook. I have severe tendonitis between my wrist and elbow. I purchased several Furls hooks, because I read reviews, especially for health reasons. The odessey are beautiful, extremely to heavy, especially when your in a N, M sizes. As for the printing, they told me they're working on a way to put the size on the handle. I prefer the Streamline wooden ones, then Streamline Swirls(resin). I'm a knife technique person and roll my hook. Furls has a generous return policy. Yes, they're the rolls royce of crochet hooks. By the way I've seen one as high as $190+. Thanks for the review, VERY well NEEDED information. The 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼Until the next video🙋🏽‍♀️🙏🏼

Your review is 100 % logical to me , I used the plan metal hooks, the cheap version of the ergonomics, then my brother gifted me with some clover amour along with some tulip etimo & totally love them from the very first use, never used a furls never will, for me the search is no longer needed as I am satisfied with both the clovers and the tulips.
I pencil hold/grip the hook and the raised tulip Japan dose not irritate me but I would prefer a flat sump rest like the clover amour.

That Susan Bates is a short shaft in a rubber / silicone sleeve. When they break the aluminum comes out and there is less than an inch holding it in. But I like them. Somewhere on RUclips I watched some one weight their Furls. Some were a lot heavier than others. Now if we could just get clover to lower their pricing a bit for their sets and single hooks. I went with clover and OMG The difference of how smooth it is on your hand and sliding through stitches, I was shocked at what a difference it made.. The next ones i purchased were Tulip Etimo ( dark handle gold shaft ) in 6mm and 5mm I LOVE THESE TULIP HOOKS....... BUT NOT THE PINK VERSION OF THEM!!! The pink is a different hook and material, the thumb rest is different and they dont glide through your yarn as easily as the Tulip Etimo. I have determined for Myself is that I love the TULIP up to a 5.5mm and the CLOVER Amore for size 6, 7, 8, !!! I will ,one day buy, a Furl hook to look at lol

The Susan Bates style is called in-line, and they are fantastic. I wish more brands made that style. The part of the hook where the yarn fits in is deeper and holds on to it better. I use the knife grip, and I prefer the Bates absolutely over the others. I think the newer ergonomic ones, like the Prym and -- I forget it? -- Tulip -- are described as a hybrid, but I haven't tried any of those yet. I've just lost my two Bates hooks I was using a lot, a 4 mm and a 4.25 mm. So I'm trying to choose either a Prym or a Tulip.

I love my Boye 6.5mm hook...but...the printing on the thumb rest irritates after a while! Now I have a Clover hook and it's my new favourite! Thanks for this review!

Clovers..hands down, however, I find the plastic shaft on the larger sizes drag a bit. I have small hands and find the handles on the hooks larger than 6 mm are awkward to hold. I do have other brands of hooks but find myself gravitating to the Clovers for most projects. Thanks for your honest review of a broad selection of hooks.

I couldn't use Susan Bates hooks, I kept snagging for some reason. Then went to Boye and that was all I used for years. Then I tried a Clover. I love my Clovers. I do have a furls, but I didn't find it as smooth as everyone was saying. I had a wooden Furls because of a nickle allergy. I too had the problem of losing the grip and then finding it again. I use only Clovers now.

What a great video! I used to be a Susan Bates fanatic, but once I tried the Clover Amour hooks, I was in heaven and could never go back! I like the Tulip Etimo hooks as well, and have a couple of beautiful sets of those, but I like the Clover handles a bit better. The Clover hooks also have a slightly longer shaft, which I prefer. I always found Boye hooks nearly impossible to crochet with, as the severely tapered throats caused the loop on my hook to tighten as I crocheted, and I always had a hard time pulling new loops through. I absolutely HATE those hooks 😂, and could never understand why so many people love them, but maybe they work better for people who use a pencil grip. I just purchased two wooden Furls streamline hooks because I’m curious, but I suspect I’m not going to enjoy using them. We’ll see… Your shawl is BEAUTIFUL, by the way!

Thank you for your kind words. I personally think that the grip used is most important. I use a knife grip now, and my wrists have thanked me for it. The Furls rolled around too much in my hand. You may like them but they didn’t work for me. 🙂

My aunt gave me my first clover set from Japan. I was about 12 or 13 years old. Now I use Susan Bates hooks only. One of these day I would like to try the furls hook. I also had to retrain myself on how to crochet. I use to hold my hook like a pencil. When I got tendinitis in both hand, I now hold the hook like a knife. I still crochet but not as much because I’m taking care of my mom. There is wood butter that you can rub on wooden hooks or needles.

I have discovered an inexpensive Boye hook (sold on Amazon and at Walmart). They are very similar to the clover hooks (with the rubber like handle ) but they fit my hand better and are so much more comfortable for me and the way I crochet and they cost way less.

Thanks for the discussion! I have large hands and fibromyalgia and crochet a lot so hooks are a very big deal for me. The clover amour are my favorite shafts but the casing is too short for my hand and causes me a lot of pain. So I used an idea from another RUclipsr and removed the handles and placed them in the Susan Bates Cushion grips and they're great. But there are quite a few Etsy dealers who will make beautiful wooden or resin handles with your choice of hook.

Hi Jeanne, what a great review. I wanted to say that I do you my Tulip hook set most of the time (when they are not stashed away with a tip, lol, but my raised letter is in a completely different spot, it's on the backside of the stamped hook side at the bottom, not anywhere near where my fingers are. They must have changed the design or something. I have had my set for about 3 or 4 years now and do love it. I am so thankful you gave such an honest review on the Furls hooks, I always wanted one because they are so pretty but I never wanted to spend the money on them. I am so glad I didn't, although, I am sure they work so many people so thank you for that. I have had that Boyd ergonomic holder for years but I think I was using it wrong because my hooks never stayed put. So I will definitely give it another try because I do get pretty painful hands a lot due to the amount of crocheting. GREAT REVIEW.

Have you ever tried crocheting with yarn especially twisted for crochet? I have a couple of Furls hooks and skeins of Furls yarn. They work together beautifully. Both are new to me and I love them. I’ve been knitting and crocheting for many, many years.

Hello. Thank you so much for the review.
I wanted to love the Tulip (I'm a knife holder), but the bump, or thumb rest, actually hurts my thumb 😢
I love the Clover Amour, but also the Clover Soft touch, which are light as air (great for my wrists).
Thank you for saving me money. I was ready to splurge on the Furls.

Thank you so much for this review! This was very honest and filled with lots of thoughtful information. I have heard in other reviews that Furl’s hooks weren’t worth the price. I am leaning toward trying Clover hooks. I am really enjoying your channel; I’m wanting to take my new crochet hobby to a higher level, making wearable items.

Agree with everything you said except about the large clovers with the plastic head. I don’t find them to glide through the yarn like the metal tip ones. I tried wax paper but ended up using $3 Yarnology plastic hooks instead. The Furls are pretty but not the best to work with and not worth the price in my opinion. Thanks for doing the review!!

Thsnk you for such an interesting review... Loved it.
I learned to crochet on my mom)# beautiful rose colored J-10 Susan Bates Hook...
which I eventually lost 😢. I used SB hooks...with the occasional Boye hook for years. I loved my Susan Bates hooks, and because my hands are child sized, avoided hooks with handles of any sort.
Finally, I decided to try Clover Amour, and was instantly in love. I now have seven of them, and will certainly buy more. I love how these colorful hooks feel in my hands. The sizes are embedded in the rubber, and will never disappear.
A big plus for me is thst each size has its own color...I am visually impaired, so being able to easily identify the hook I need is a big deal.
The plastic in the larger hoooks is not a problem at all... They dud thst, to keep the hooks light.
Furls.... inhave no desire to even try them. They all look uncomfortable...and I think they are way overpriced... Prople buy the name.
Christa, if the Secret Yarnery lives in Kenya... She ordered several hundred dollars worth ofvFurls, and despite being a seasoned crocheter, she simply could not use them. She was so angry...,
I think people think they shoukd love Furl hooks, because they are expensive... and some people do swear by them. But I would not waste my money on even one. My sweet little Clovers are good enough for me. I think they are the best on the market.
BTW.... I just tried a black handled Susan Bates hook, and hated it, The placement of the handle forces you to move your hand up ti the bare metal... Very uncomfortable , especially for small hands. I gave them to my daughter, who has larger hands...
Thanks again... I love hook reviews.
Oh... I recently tried the SB black handled hook, and coukd not use it... The placement I’d the handles is all wrong..

Thank you Jeanne I have never tried a clover hook but I think I might go buy me one. I do have a furls streamline and I have a furls Odyssey and I would have to agree with you they are heavy and yeah if you're going to pay that much money for one then I do think that it should have been stamped on somewhere or engraved on the handle itself on the Odyssey I didn't like that sticker on the bottom either. After crocheting with it for probably about an hour I have to put it up because I have a rheumatoid arthritis and my hand start hurting. I aslo have two sets of Boye and I use them all the time. The only thing about Boye hooks for me is that they snag the yarn a lot.

I too had purchased the expense of furls hook and maybe unlike you the Susan Bates cushion grip hooks that you get it Joanne's have been what I keep going back to because of possibly the way I hold my hook like a knife but that's what I tend to go back to and that is the most comfortable for me for a long periods of crochet.

I agree that Clover has some of the best hooks. On the clover hooks I really like the larger sizes with the plastic hooks. My favourite, but the smaller hooks are just a bit small. I am a pencil holder. My hands cramp after awhile when I am crocheting a lot. Need something just a bit bigger. I have invested in a few hooks from Leither Co.. I am going to take some pictures & email you a few I have found that work for me.

I learned with a Susan Bates. I prefer that type (pointed tip & flat head) constructed hook to all the others I have. I'm not that crazy about the round tip hooks. But that's just me. But I have decided to try a couple of Clover hooks.
