  • I used to use Boye aluminum crochet hooks, but my hands would quickly start cramping and aching after short crochet sessions. I then tried Susan Bates hooks, and that didn't help much. So I switched to Clover Amour crochet hooks, and they were far more comfortable than anything I had tried before. I had no intention of switching to another type of hook, until I stumbled across a photo of a Furls Odssey crochet hook. I was intrigued by its shape and design, and upon reading the reviews and available information, decided to give Furls hooks a try. I purchased a size H (5.0 mm) Furls Streamline in Camwood, and a size I (5.5 mm) Furls Odyssey in Purple. These are my new favorite hooks, and I love them so much I want to share my favorite things about them with you.

    I was a hard core Clover Amour girl (though I wished the handles were thicker). I have Fibro, arthritis and Carpal tunnel, and I recently had to go weeks without crocheting (The horror, lol). Mary Maxim had a sale on Furls Streamline, so I tried it. I liked the handle better, but didn't feel like it was worth switching because of the drag (not bad, just more than the clovers). I decided for Christmas to ask for a couple of Furls in the sizes I use most, because they were having a sale. I got an Odyssey & a Streamline Swirl, so I could compare them all, and really wanted to like the swirl the best, since they were less expensive than the Odyssey. Well, I actually ended up liking the wood the same as, or better than, the swirl- but the Odyssey beat them both. Additionally, the swirl broke from a minimal drop. Furls immediately offered me the choice of a replacement or a refund - excellent customer service. So, my hope is to slowly but surely grow my Furls collection :) Thanks for a great review :)

    After watching your review, I picked up a Streamline and an Odessey. I have a set of Clover Amour hooks that I've been using for a few years but wanted to see if it was time for an upgrade. Both are great hooks but the Odessey feels so much better. I agree with all your points but there are a couple of things about the Odessey that for now, are keeping me from buying more:
    - The hook part is a lot sharper than the Amour. I find myself catching the other loops if my hook isn't turned just right
    - the tip is a lot more rounded than the Amour so I'm having to "find" the stitch more often
    It will take some getting used to because it's a great hook and feels good in the hand, especially after a few hours. I just wanted to share my initial thoughts in case it helps anybody else that's on the fence.

    I have a difficult time crocheting with hooks that have such a long distance between the thumb rest, and the top of the hook. I know it's different for everyone but for me, it's easier to hold my hand closer to the top of the hook- it just feels more comfortable for me- that's why I prefer the Susan Bates Hooks.
    I put colored plastic elastic bands around the shaft, and then put pencil gel grips over those, to cushion my hooks, so they're pretty comfortable to work with, for me ;)

    Yours is about the most informative review I have seen. Thank you! I ordered both of those furls at one point. You’re right, we all have our preferences, trying to use each of them confirmed my love for the Susan Bates’ hooks. I just wish I could find the Odyssey that I bought for $20 something so I could sell it for $60 plus now. I did love how smoothly the yarn would glide over the metal of the Odyssey, though.

    Your review was excellent! Gave me a lot to think about and I was wondering why the Furls were priced the way they were. The way you explained how they were designed showed that some engineering went into these crochet hooks. I was looking hard at the streamlines (let's face it, they are the least expensive) but now I am thinking I will just pick up the odyssey hooks. You have convinced me that if I upgrade from my clovers, that is the way to go.

    For my style of crocheting (elevated pencil), the Furls Streamline didn't perform well. Although beautiful hooks, not functional. The sample I did came out 'wonky'. The head kept splitting the yarn (Acrylic). I didn't find them sturdy and was fearful they would break. I sold them. I do plan to try the Odyssey line instead. I think they will work better for me. Hey, you like what you like. 🤗🙂

    Thank you for this review, which was truly helpful. The furls are beautiful, and I was ready to purchase a set until I saw your review. I love my Clovers precisely because the widest part is at the top. This make it much easier for me to hold and control. The bulk and weight at the bottom of the furls - for my particular hands - would likely cause them to ache. If Furls made one with the widest part farther up I'd likely get them. Perhaps someday they'll make them, and I'll try them. But for now I'm grateful for my Clovers, and my Tulips, which work just fine.

    Great review. I agree completely with you about the Streamline. It’s a bit too long for me and I prefer a slicker feel for autopilot projects (granny stripe blankets). The wood is too grippy but will be used for patterns that require slowing down and more concentration. I have been using Tulip and Clover Amours. I just ordered 4.5 and 5 mm hooks in Odyssey to try.

    Thank you for this review! I use Clover Amour hooks and have the same hook grip as you. And I noticed that I put my finger out to hold the loops the same way you did, I never noticed it before, wow. I am thinking about getting a fancier ergonomic 5 mm hook since that's the size I use most. I was worried about how heavy the odessy ones are and was leaning towards a wood hook because I have a wood knitpicks tunisian hook I really like. But I think the streamline would drive me nuts having to hold it so far away from the end after seeing this. So helpful!!

    I acquired a complete set of the Furls Streamlines (1 in each size, mostly in Camwood) last year when they were first released, and like them better than my Furls Candy Shop hook, because the smooth curved taper of the handles are a bit more comfortable & less distracting for me than the curved bumps of the Candy Shop hook's handle. Furls introduced Streamline Swirl hooks in 2 colors this Christmas season; however, the 2 Swirl hooks I ordered will end up being my (end-of-January) birthday presents, as demand was so high that they shipped late (and 1 of the hooks I ordered was the only size & color that Furls accidentally forgot to put in a production order for at the same time as the rest, so mine shipped extra-late). I've heard elsewhere online that the Streamline Swirl hooks (made from resin) are less "grabby" with yarn than the original wooden Streamline hooks -- but that crocheters may find both kinds of Streamline hooks useful, depending on what type of yarn they're using in a project.

    Thank you very much for this great review. As I live in Germany, Furls is hard to buy for me. Still, I learnt a lot by watching your review. By chance I've just tried out a new needle that claimed to be more ergonomic and found they really are. You explained very well why. I'd like to tell you about it, even if I'm quite sure you'd face the same problems buying them in the U.S. as me trying to buy Furls in Germany 😀
    First: I don't like Addi, that's why I never tried "Swings". But there is another branch in Germany that is quite popular: Prym aka KnitPro. The line is simply named "Prym ergonomics". The knitting needles of this line I don't prefer, it's made of plastic and it slows down my knitting. But the crochet hooks are awesome! The plastic seems to be coated better, stitches glide very well ( it could be that I just don't feel the resistance because I crochet quite slowly anyway, whereas I'm a fast knitter).
    They are shaped similar to the Odyssey, not too short, not too long, but they have got no additional weight. Now, what I absolutely love about them is their pointy and deep hook. From watching your video it seemed to be more pointy and a little bit deeper than the Furls (both of them). That's why I wanted to tell you about them, maybe you'd like to try them out, too. Or maybe someone else.
    My best wishes to you!

    I purchased two of the Furl's Odyssey hooks and I want to love them, but I am struggling with them. They seem to get caught in the yarn a lot. I currently use the Clove Amors or the Tulips. I love both of them, but find the handles a bit short for me, so that is why I bought the Furls. I am hoping I will get used to the Odyssey eventually as they are beautiful hooks and feel very nice in my hand. I have been crocheting since 1970 so perhaps it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад +2

      Hello! I have found that the more I use my Furls hooks, the more my hands get used to them, and the smoother / faster my crochet gets. I would suggest adjusting the way you hold the hook a little bit. I had to try holding the hook at different spots on the handle and turning the hook a little differently in my hand before I found the position that was just right for me. I think this is because the Furls handles do not have the typical flat section that other hooks have to designate where you are supposed to hold the hook. Now that I have found my favorite way to hold the Furls hook, I don't miss that flat section at all. The different shaped tip on the Furls hooks also took a little getting used to for me, but now I prefer the Furls tip shape over the Clover Amour tip shape. Hope this helps! Thanks!

      @@YayForYarn Thank you. I do like the hybrid style of the Clover hooks. The Furls hook seems more like an in line style, which I never used. your comparison was well done. im looking into furls lately and hoping to get 2 or 3 this yr. when you crochet you are using a chain 3 when you turn your work. why? it creates large bulge on the edges and doesn't leave a nice straight edge. use a chain 1 when turning your work and this will give you an even edge.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I don't normally use the chain 3 to start a row, but I did in this video for demonstration. I have tried the ch 1, but my favorite is the chainless starting double crochet: ruclips.net/video/uKZLp-Na1_c/видео.html It creates a double crochet from the bottom up, eliminating the need for a turning chain.

    I enjoyed your video. It was helpful as my current hooks are Boyle and I am scouting for something more ergonomic. I appreciated your point by point comparison. The one point that is holding me back from a purchase is the price. A comparison of the prices would have been helpful. Thanks for your insights.

      Vivian Michaelson Try the Boye Ergonomics hooks. I love them. I have the entire set of Clovers. The Boye Ergo are $29.99 for set that goes to L size. I love them. Big nice grips. Use your 50% off coupons at Joanne’s. Michaels and Hobby Lobby don’t have the set. Walmart has but you can’t use coupons. So much cheaper this way. Love them!

    I hold my hooks like a knife. Others hold like a pencil. So is there any difference ..ie which one might a knife grip prefer?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад

      Hi Maggie. Both handles are the same shape, so I think either one is suitable for a knife grip. I also hold the hook like a knife rather than a pencil, and both hooks are comfortable for me. I have also heard that other pencil-style crocheters like the handle shape as well. I hope this helps!

    Wonderfully thorough review, although I do wonder of the size of one's hand makes a difference. As a guy who absolutely needs large gloves rather than just "one size fits all," I hesitate to invest in the better hooks without knowing if people with larger hands find them better or worse. Any thoughts?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад +1

      Hi. I don't know whether these would work well for larger hands. I have rather small hands. Perhaps you could try wrapping something around one of your existing hooks until the handle is about 3/4" thick to see if you like the feel. (Maybe wrap something thin and soft, and then wrap in masking tape to secure?) I think Boye makes an ergonomic egg-shaped handle that you can attach to your hooks. That might be a good thing to try first to see if you like the feel of a larger handle. I hope this helps!

    Gotta ask, how does a Furls hook use differ in use when using the pencil grip method? I hesitate to order one and find no difference for the price. Any ideas or advice ?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад +1

      Hi. I personally do not use a pencil grip to hold my hook, but from what I understand, the thicker handle can also be beneficial for those who use the pencil grip. When the handle is thicker, the hand does not have to close as much to grasp the hook, so it decreases the amount of strain on the hands. The only thing that you may or may not have a problem with is the longer distance from the handle to the hook tip. If you like the Bates hooks, for example, the thumb rest on those is very close to the hook tip in comparison to Furls. I think the handle to tip on the Furls is also longer than on the Boye hooks. Furls Streamline hooks tend to be a bit longer than the Odyssey as well. If you don't think you would like a longer length, you might try making or purchasing some hooks with polymer clay handles. (Tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/eqN3w8Pl6HA/видео.html ) There are several shops that will custom make them for you on Etsy, so you could get them shaped so that the thickest part of the handle is at the distance from the hook tip that you like best. I hope this helps!

      Hi Thea. Yes, I agree, they are not cheap, but I am working on a more inexpensive DIY alternative for a hook that has some similar qualities to these. If you are interested, you can subscribe to my channel to be sure not to miss that video when it is published. Thanks!

    I love your review!!! I have just ordered my first Furls hook and am anxious to try it
    I wonder if you are using your index finger on the yarn is part of how you control your tension using those hooks. Do you find your tension is affective by the different hooks? It was interesting g that you were able to work faster with the Furls hook and for a longer time with no issues with your hand. I have been crocheting for over 55 years and over that time I found that most hooks were about the same to use. I have always had a harder time with the steel hooks being so thin my hands would ache after a while. That really discouraged me from doing any white work or working on Irish Crochet. It is still hard to find steel hooks with larger handles. I did find a few on a trip to California 6 years ago that helped a lot, but there were only 3 sizes available at that time. Recently with my interest in Furls prompted me to try using clay to make the handles in that shape but I have not tried working with them. I did however, use clay to mold a similar shape on a 5mm metal hook. It did not look very comfortable and I'm sure I did not get the shape quite right, but when I used it it was a very big difference working with it. I was very comfortable to use though it took a little to work out my tension I'm so pleased with that type of shape. I'm excited to get the hooks I ordered and be able to get much more work accomplished! Your review got me really looking at them, so thank you!!!

      Hi Kathleen! Once I got used to using these hooks often, I can use them without the index finger on top. I think any slight changes in tension from using a hook like this will come from the different surface material. For example, since wood has a little more surface friction than the nickel-plated Odyssey, one would likely get slightly different tension between the two, even if they are both the same size. Since I loved the handle shape of the Furls so much, I later removed the rubber handles from my previous favorite Clover Amour hooks, and made my own handles from polymer clay. They are not exactly the same as the Odyssey, but they do make it more comfortable without costing much. ruclips.net/video/eqN3w8Pl6HA/видео.html I hope this helps, and I hope you'll enjoy your new Furls hooks!

    Those are fine if you use the knife grip. How does oddessy work for the pencil grip?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Terri! I learned to crochet with the knife grip, so the pencil grip does not feel as natural to me. I can crochet with the pencil grip, just not as fast as I can crochet with the knife grip. I have tried using the pencil grip with a Furls hook, and it feels much more comfortable and natural than if I use the pencil grip with a regular hook. The thick handle causes the hand to not have to close as much or grip as tightly, so the hand is more relaxed. I find that it is easier to control the tip of the hook more precisely when my hand is more relaxed. I also think it helps that there is no flat section on the handle of a Furls hook, so how the hook is turned in your hand is not determined by where the flat section is, but by whatever position is most comfortable for you. I think the Furls hooks are just as good for the pencil grip as they are for the knife grip. Hope this helps! Thanks!

    I’ve been using Clover for years. I’m now looking to buy a Furls hook but not sure whether to get an Odyssey or a Streamline. I also use my forefinger to hold the yarn (and like you, I’m trying not to so as not to strain my finger). Furls hooks are quite costly so I want to be sure I get the one that’s right for me. Based on your video, I’m leaning more towards the Odyssey. I want to know if it’s easy to use with a fingering-weight yarn? I’m thinking of buying a size 4mm, 6mm and 8mm. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! After making several projects each with both the Odyssey and the Streamline, I have been able to stop holding the yarn with my forefinger, and I have adjusted to the longer hook-to-handle distance on the Streamline. I find them both very comfortable. I still prefer the Odyssey, as I like the weighted handle and the nickel-plated hook, but I enjoy using the Streamline as well. I have not used the Odyssey with a fingering weight yarn yet, but I have since purchased the Odyssey in a few smaller sizes and used them with sport weight yarn, which worked very well. I have used my size H Streamline with a fingering yarn, though, and it has worked very well. They both work well with synthetic and natural fibers, but I especially like the tiny amount of friction that you get when using wool / alpaca etc on the wood surface of the Streamline. (I should mention that when I used a bright-colored hand dyed yarn on the Streamline, the dye bled a little onto the very tip of the hook. I tried to clean it off, and it came off, but I had to rub a little oil into the area I cleaned and let it absorb to restore the smooth finish to the wood. It took about a day to soak in completely and regain the original smoothness. You might want to keep that in mind if you use a lot of bright color hand-dyed yarns.) However, I can go a bit faster with the Odyssey, as the nickel plated surface is nice and slick. (Plus, nickel plated surface won't absorb dyes.) If you like a lightweight hook with a tiny bit of friction, you may prefer the Streamline, but if you like to crochet quickly and think you would enjoy a momentum-weighted handle, I would recommend the Odyssey. Hope this helps! Thanks!

      I got my 2 Odyssey hooks (in sizes G and J) and 1 Streamline hook in size H for my birthday. I've tried all of them but was disappointed with the size G of my Odyssey hook. It seemed bigger than the Clover Amour G hook and felt like the size H hook of my Clover Amour. In fact, when I put it beside the size H Streamline I got, the size looked very much the same!
      I have read in one of the reviews for the Odyssey that the hook sizes tend to be off. Now, I'm thinking of buying another Odyssey hook but in 3.25mm because I'm assuming that would be an actual 4mm hook than the one I got. Both Streamline and Odyssey are fantastic, though! The Streamline, while longer than the Odyssey, was a joy to work with because of its sheer lightness. The Odyssey, while heavier than the Streamline, made me crochet for far longer because my hands didn't hurt! When I switched to my Cover Amour, they felt smaller and my hands tired easily. I will buy more of the Furls hooks but I'm torn between the Odyssey and the Streamline.
