  • First time user's honest review of the Clover Amour Crochet Hook - 5mm.
In this review I discuss the grip, feel and usability of this hook. How does it handle the yarn? Is it worth investing in? Is it really as good as the crochet community says?
Have you tried the Clover Amour hooks? Did you have any issues or thoughts you'd like to share? Feel free to leave a comment as I read each one.

I've been using clover hooks for a few years now and that coating that makes the yarn slide has not been compromised at all! This was such a fun video to watch and see someone join the clover cult!

👋 Hiya and thank you for welcoming me into the Clover Cult! 😃 It's great to hear that they haven't compromised with their hook coating, it truly makes such a difference! Are there any other hooks you might recommend?

I started out using the Clover Soft Touch crochet hooks and I really like those because the yarn just glides over the shaft. I've bought some of the Clover Amour hooks in the larger sizes (L, M/N, O) to use with bulkier yarns. The shaft on those is made from resin but I enjoy working with them. The only other hooks I use regularly are Susan Bates aluminum hooks.

Thanks for that! I've heard the Clover soft touch's are really beautiful hooks to work with, so may need to try them next I think. Susan Bates hooks also have a great reputation, I think they're mainly inline hooks, is that right? They look fantastic, just not sure how I'd go with an inline hook since I'm so used to tapered ones. Do you have any issues with them?

Yes that’s my favourite crochet hooks too. As you said it glide so smoothly. I am pencil holder and it perfect for my hold, very comfortable!

That's so great to hear! The Clover's just seem to be made with comfort and ease of use in mind don't they? I never have issues with yarn splitting or getting caught on the hook whenever I use it, it's just lovely. Have you tried many other hooks?

Ooh I would really love to try the soft touch's! They look really comfortable 🤤 Are they much different to the amours?

@@MelsYarniversethe soft touch is shorter and has a firmer plastic handle. It also glides like butter but may not be the best option for knife gripe. When I had knife grip I upgraded to the Amours. Now that I have more of a pencil grip the soft touch is great.

I love to see someone else just trying these out. I have heard other crochet youtubers really talk up these Clover hooks and the more expensive Tulip hooks even down to a scientific level of measuring the surface roughness of each brand. The one youtuber who did that study (Elise Rose Crochet - See her Woobles kit review video) has often talked about how smooth some hooks are over the others and how it makes such a HUGE difference when you're working and ultimately recommended the Clover hooks for their smoothness and more mid tier price point.
I still was wary given how extreme the price difference was compared to the much larger and cheaper sets I've gotten from Amazon, so I ordered one hook each from Clover and Tulip to see how big a difference it makes. Aaaand I was actually halfway through making this comment when my own new hooks arrived so I quickly broke them out to do a little test run with some magic circles in two different types of yarn. Like you said, it doesn't seem like there'd be that much difference as I started with my regular hooks, but the Clover slid through like butter when I switched. I tried a Tulip hook too at the same time and while I like the grip a little bit better (It's kind of squishier), I preferred the glide of the Clover for sure and I think given the price difference, I'll definitely invest in a full set of the Clover hooks versus the Tulip.

Oh wow, thanks so much for the feedback on Tulip vs Clover (and for recommending Elise Rose's vids!). Perfect timing that they arrived in time for you to test them out!! I've always wanted to try a Tulip, but now I'm not in that much of a hurry lol! It's interesting that the glide of the shaft and head of the Clover wins out each time. I wonder how they manufacture them to ensure they all turn out so silky smooth?

@@MelsYarniverse After a little more digging, apparently the red Tulip line that I tried has a matte finish which some people say isn't as smooth as their others, but even still... The Tulip sets are so much higher priced than the Clover ones, I just can't imagine them being that much nicer. I might try one more Tulip hook from the Rose line or just to see, but I don't know... I still think they're too pricey.

@@foxwolfmoon It doesn't sound like they are really worth it, especially if you're so happy with the Clovers. I think maybe I would try the Clover Soft Touch's before I invest in a Tulip, atleast for now anyway. Have you used the soft touch's before?

I really like how smooth the metal is. It’s the best hook I have for that part of it. I don’t find the handle long enough though (and that goes for a lot of hooks). I’m lucky that my husband is a woodturner so he’s been replacing handles with long wooden ones similar to the shape of the plastic Prym ergonomic. Talking of them, don’t waste your money. The plastic squeaks and is not smooth at all. The handle is great though

      @MelsYarniverse  3 месяца назад

Oh thanks so much for the heads up on the Prym! They looked pretty good, and I really like the shape of the handles, but disappointing to hear they're not worth the money. And wow, how lovely of your husband to make you some replacement handles! I'll bet you've got some gorgeous hooks!

Clovers really are good hooks. Another really good hook is the tulip, which is similar to a clover. You should give one a try.

I am and always will be a Clover amour girl 🤍🤎💙
Honestly Japanese know what they are doing, these hooks are perfect they just slide through ANY yarn. I started crocheting with cheap aluminum hooks and my wrists started hurting after only a month of two, I quickly found out about Clover amour hooks and honestly since I got them, I never had any wrist pains even when I crochet long hours🤍
You should definitely get a whole set you will never regret it :) they are my all time go to hooks even though I have a few Furls too but I am gonna be honest they are more pleasing to hold and look at than to crochet with... I MUCH prefer clovers for a smooth ride :) with Furls resin or wood hooks I always have to adapt the yarn that works best because sadly they do not work well with all types of yarns for me personally whereas clovers never fail 🤍

Thank you so much for your comment 🙏💗 I have to admit, I am absolutely LOVING this hook! I definitely feel like I need to invest in the whole set for sure! They are sooooo much nicer to work with than my other hooks. And, like you, I noticed that I can crochet for much longer without any wrist pain as well - isn't that amazing?! They truly are very well made, I think I'm very much a Clover Amour fan girl now too! 💗❤
