    Yes you absolutely could use a size 2.00 hook Mel. I learned to make Irish lace from my mum and loved the fine quality work. Think of it like writing... most of us learn to write with a pencil then progress to pen or markers. Once you've mastered the control and formation of letters you could write with a mop handle or a matchstick... or anything you could manage to lift and hold. You do need good eyesight which means I no longer do lacework as I've cataracts and on a waiting list for surgery. You have a go... make a pair of earrings or something and have fun! The colors are beautiful together. I’ve seen people use those granny’s to make handbags also. One I saw they used maybe around a 12x12 at the bottom and folded it up and used the smaller granny’s at the top, then continued with a sc or hdc and handles. I believe they used premade zippered pouch for the lining. The blanket you are doing is going to be beautiful with the colors you’ve chosen. ❤

    Love the way you say “the 2 mm is tiny” I normally use a 1.25mm hook and a Nr 20 cotton( and a 0.6mm for attaching beads to lace knitted shawls). At my crochet group someone gave me a 6mm hook and some wool and I just couldn’t cope with how enormous it was … they had to take it away and get me a cup of tea !

    Interesting to hear about the yarn you bought. I bought some of the Aldi yarn in 8ply last year in white, beige & also blue to crochet a baby blanket for my great nephew. It worked up beautifully & was only $1.99 per ball. I would have been interested for you to try breaking the chenille type yarn as many chenilles break way too easily which is why I'm not a fan of that type of yarn but maybe their yarn is stronger. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

    Great review Mel! I bought a set almost identical to that many years ago when I was only using aluminium hooks & I loved them. I still have them, but now I only use my Clover & Tulip hooks as the ergonomic handle is helpful for me with the amount of crocheting I do. I'm sure I could use those coloured aluminium hooks if I had to, but I enjoy Clover & Tulip much more. I've only ever broken 1 hook & it was when I was learning as a child & using a plastic hook my Grandma gave me. Needless to say, that stopped me from using plastic hooks ever again! Maybe it's worth washing the hooks with a dash of soap to get rid of anything on the hook that's grabbing the yarn. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

      @MelsYarniverse 2 дня назад

      Thanks so much, Kerryn 🙏💗 Glad you enjoyed it! 😃 I know I've used a plastic hook before, but honestly, I can't remember my impression of it. I'm sure if I'd snapped one like you, though, that would leave a pretty strong impression! 😂 Yes, I tend to stick to my Clovers because the grip is much easier on my hands, but these are a pretty good backup should I ever need them. Oh, great tip about washing the hook! 😃 Thanks for that! Have a lovely day 😊💗

    Here in UK Aldi gets yarn in store a few times a year, it does sell fast especially the baby chenille type. It’s great for amigurumi and blankets. It’s a case of buy it as soon as you see it or else you’ll miss out.

      Oh, absolutely! If you blink, you'll miss it here in Australia, too! I saw people filling their shopping trolley's full of yarn, and I kept thinking how bad I felt for people who just wanted a few balls to give it a try who would end up missing out. I managed to get a few balls of each colour, but not much. I went back to get more a few days later, and it was all gone! I tried 3 other stores, and they were all sold out, too. I can't complain, though. I did get some, so I consider myself lucky! 😊

    I have a gorgeous blanket that I made from three colours of wool bought at two different craft shows in Sydney many years ago. It was my first JAYGO item. Love snuggling under that blanket. Currently making another blanket for me in cotton. These blankets are for use when sitting in a chair so are too small to use on a bed but just right for a cold winter evening watching a movie with the family. I have had the colour charts sent to me ever since I was looking for a colour to make a sampler blanket early this century. I knew which colour I wanted to buy, but didn't trust my computer screen so had a colour chart sent to me. I then found the matching strands on the card by putting it against the big item that was just my desired colour. Never would have picked that colour on the screen. (It is a UFO having been lost for a couple of house moves.) My girlfriends all use BWM wool and swap their project leftovers. I have made two single bed sized blankets from those 8 ply leftovers. One in hexagons and the other was a Neat Ripple.

    Tulip is an excellent brand. I do beadwork and bought their needles when they first came out. They outlast others by miles or km. I have their small crochet hook set I use to bead crochet. No problems; they work great. Wanting now their larger hooks. I am just now getting back into crocheting with yarn. Using Clovers now because of less cost but definitely wanting to try the Tulips because of my experience with their smaller crochet set and beading needles.

      Oh, that's really great to hear. Thanks for sharing! 🤗 I am yet to work with beads in my crochet, so hopefully, I'll make something soon to give it a try. Tulip have been around for a long time, so fantastic to hear that they are still so reliable 😃

    This must be available in the UK, because I’ve yet to see this in Missouri, USA. If I find them here they would have a wonderful Christmas gift for my nieces along with some yarn in their favorite colors. Thank you for sharing. ♥️🧶♥️🧶♥️

      No problem! ☺️ Hopefully, they will come to the US soon 🤞 I've never seen them on sale here in Australia either until just now, so hopefully, they'll start adding them to other countries soon? What a lovely idea to gift them to your nieces 💗💗💗
