Me too!!! 💓. I also bought it, but found it on Thrift Books for $8 in like new condition 🎉. Its amazing, I am a bit worried about using the written patterns because some use terminology that I have never seen before. Did u feel the same? Maybe Mel will give us some tutorials using the patterns in the book? What do u think @ Mel? ❤️
You have just saved me. I’ve been given some big knitted squares my grandmother had done and I have been racking my brain on how to join them. I’m so happy.
Oh, that's wonderful news! 😃 I'm so glad I was able to help in some small way! 💗 I hope you can now move forward on your project and get to enjoy your grandmothets knitted squares for years to come 😊💐
Fantastic deals! I love the blanket too. The blanket reminds me of The Lively Blanket pattern by Pretty Peaceful. And I totally agree with the price of buttons. Thanks for the fun thrifting day, Aussie style.
I could see using those buttons on the vintage children’s crocheted outfits. I could tell that those were older buttons. I have a couple of those in my stash from family.
Great deals! Our St. Vinny's in Dane Co. Wisconsin, USA, stuff the yarn into tube bags and charge $4.40 per bag. The bags are stapled shut so you can't feel the yarn. Sometimes they will price a skein separately for $1.20. Do your thrift shops ever have fiber events where they put out the bulk of their yarn for a special sale? They do that here and it is the best time to get just about any yarn you would like to try.
Oh wow, that sounds amazing! I don't think they do have fiber sales specifically, but the Salvos have a coloured tag sale where items tagged with a specific coloured tag are on sale that week, so sometimes you can pick up some great bargains that way 😊 If I found a thrift store that had yarn sales I think I'd be in heaven!! 😃 that sounds AMAZING!
I would have been intrigued by the combination knit and crochet blanket. I live in West Virginia and never thought I’d watch someone in Australia looking at state fair blankets. It is a small world. I love thrifting and finding all kinds of yarns, books, hooks and needles out and about!
It really is a small world! 😃 I really enjoyed reading all about the state and county fairs, and their histories are fascinating. Also, the designs for the Afghans are just beautiful! 😍 Well, if you enjoy thrifting and crochet, then you are in good company here and will always most welcome ☺️🤗
Hi there 👋 I'm so glad you found my tiny little corner of RUclips 😊 If yarn and op shopping are your two favourite things then you're in good company and you're always welcome here🙂
What a great haul! Another stunning blanket and those old crochet patterns take me right back to my childhood, (Yep I'm a child of the 60's) My Mum crocheted both my younger sister and I poncho's constructed from bright coloured flowers, they were stunning!
I found one of those footy sized balls of yarn at savers the other day for $3, I was pretty excited! I used to volunteer at a save the children op shop decades ago, we used to cut the buttons off damaged or stained garments that had been donated and put them 8n mini zip lock bags and sell them. When I was a dressmaker I always checked op shops before I went to spotlight. I also used to buy jars of buttons! Last year I gave my box of buttons to a friend who wanted to do button art. I hadn't been able to use them for years and I had a large plastic storage container full of them, all bought from op shops. My mum also volunteered at an op shop and would always bring me the buttons.
Wow! What an amazingly crafty and creative life you've lived so far! 😃 Isn't that wonderful?! $3 for one of those giant yarn balls?! What a great find! I used to love Savers when I lived in Melbourne. It was such a huge store and there were always lots of treasures to discover there. I think I have to officially dub thee "The Button Queen"! 😆 I love that you used to rescue the buttons from the unusable garments. What a great idea! 😃
My favourite of your purchases was the blanket. I think I would have purchased a few of them if I had been in there with you. It's such a shame it often takes a crafter to appreciate something made in the craft. Apart from how lovely they can be, WE know the work that went into them.
Yes, I know how you feel. It's so sad to see some of the things that end up at the op shop / thrift store, especially when you can see how much work has gone into them. But I feel like we can rescue them and cherish them, and sometimes even give them a new life back out in the community ☺️
Totally like 'rescuing' them. However, as a crafter who ends up with too many things of my own as much as nice things made by others, I'd like it if more people could appreciate these things in the same way. I really don't need any more lol.
@nefraial I can understand that too! 🤗 My list of wip's keeps getting longer, and I have so many projects I haven't even started on yet that I desperately want to work on, so I hear ya! 💗
When I find gorgeous balls like you did, I instantly think amigurumi. My favourite toy, a hippo which sits on the lounge with me, was made from antique Patons pure wool. Other than that, just to be able to see and feel it is worth the joy it brings to a lot of us.
Oh, how lovely! 💗 What a great idea! I'll have to have a dig through my collection of amigurumi patterns and see what I can find. Great idea! Thank you! 🙏🫶
I am blessed to have a local thrift store that sells yarn for $.50! Any kind, full skein, parts of a skein. You can get wool, cashmere, alpaca, mohair. I've gotten several full skeins of mohair and wool blend before! I'd be too ashamed to admit how much I've sorrento yarn. Lol. I've found your channel and look forward to watching more!
Oh wow! 😲 What an AMAZING thrift store that is! I can't imagine finding all of that in one thrift store! That's incredible! I'll bet you found some amazing stuff! That's fantastic! 😃 Thank you so much for your kind comment 🙏💗
Isn't it a fantastic idea for a crochet book? I wonder how many years they did these for, or if this was the only one? I'll have to do some research, I think 🤔 I just had a look through the book for you, but unfortunately, there wasn't a winner from Kentucky in it 😕
Oh, that would be great! 😃 I know handmade buttons are selling well on Etsy too, but being able to custom make your own buttons for each project would be awesome! 👌
Hi! 👋 It's great, isn't it? What a fun way to recycle and discover some beautiful pre-loved items that we can continue to cherish 😊 You just never know what you might find!
Definitely on of my favourite finds this year!😃 I'm thinking of making a small wall hanging using the witchy pattern just in time for Halloween🧙♀️🧹🙂 Do you think that would look ok?
Absolutely, especially the good quality ones. You know Mel, you inspired me a lot, and I went on to find some old craft magazines here in Istanbul. And my experience was fantastic!! Thank you❤
Greetings from the Netherlands! I use little buttons on the side of crochet baby shoes. If you have a few buttons that are doubles, you could do it too.
I love the look of that Blue Ribbon Afghans book! I went on Ebay and they had several on sale. I managed to get a copy for about £12 (including P&P!) which is now on its way from the USA to me here in Scotland. I’m delighted and can’t wait for it to arrive.
Hi Lorraine👋 I'm so glad you're getting the book! It really is an amazing read and now I've had some time to look through it I love it even more! When you get it please let me know what your favourite patterns are. I'm partial to the witchy one because it's the perfect season for it🧙♀️🎃but I also love the Granny's Ripple as well. Thank you so much for the comment, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book!📖
@@MelsYarniverseThe book has arrived! It’s hardback and looks like new so I’m very pleased. I’m interested in Baby Rings and Kaleidoscope as scrap projects. So lucky 😊 our thrift stores in California have nothing and I live in a rural area closest thrift store is 30 miles, everything is so overpriced sometimes more than the stores on sale lol! It was fun watching you thrift , I cannot believe all the blankets you found “ clever sausage” will be stuck in my head all day.
Hello up there in California👋😃 I'm sorry to hear that the thrifting isn't so great around where you are. I also often find items that are priced at retail prices if not more as well! I appreciate you watching and even more so for commenting. I love hearing from people in our amazing crochet community🧶😊 Where these store are located it gets so cold that it sometimes snows, I think that's why there are so many blankets around🥶 I'm awarding you the "Honorary Clever Sausage Award" today for your kind comment🏆😃
have you noticed that the price they put on the blankets is cheaper than the value of the yarn that went into it, considering how much they charge for balls of yarn there.. I recently made a crochet handbag with a material lining..both the yarn and the material were from Op shops..the yarn had originally been someone's unfinished projects..I unravelled them and recycled the yarn for a bag..it was the style using the 3 granny squares..I was going to crochet a handle, a long one to go over my head/shoulder, but then remembered that I'd bought some bag straps from Savers...I like that they offer the long straps from bags that may not have been good enough to sell, but the straps, which generally don't get used all that much, were still useful...at $2.99 max that is a great alternative for bags, either crochet/knitted or even made from material..and yeah..buttons..!!! Spotlight asks way to much for theirs..and Op shops, the small ones in abundance are cheap, but who needs a whole heap of small buttons..?? it's the larger ones that I am after..
Hiya 👋 yes, I have definitely noticed that it's cheaper to buy the blankets than to buy the yarn at the prices they charge. So bizarre that they don't factor this is when pricing their yarn! 🤔 Your bag sounds wonderful! Isn't it great that you found all the components you needed to make it, in op shops?! That's fantastic! And I'll bet it looks amazing, too! 😍
Hi again Jane😀👋 I would love to do a tutorial from that book as they are gorgeous blankets but I'm not sure of the legalities of showing patterns from a book still in production?🤔
They are so hard to find these days, aren't they? There is lots of knitting stuff around, but not a lot of crochet. Keep looking though, there are still a few treasures out there! 😃💗
Hi Mel, I've enjoyed the tagalong today. I'm in North Carolina, USA. I think buttons are great for crochet tote bags or crossbody cellphone bags. 😊 Have a great day.
Hiya 👋 I'm so glad you enjoyed joining me! I think using the buttons for tote bags and crossbody bags is a great idea! Thanks so much 🙏💗 Are you a crocheter yourself? Or maybe a knitter? I love your youtube name, I'm very intrigued 😊
I made that little dress at time 14:32 for my 2nd daughter, who is now 36. Buttons...have you ever made button dolls? Like a yoyo doll, but smaller and threaded on hat elastic. Depending on the button size determined the size of the doll. I love that blanket.
Oh, you made that dress? Wow! Oh, how lovely! It must have been very nostalgic for you to see it again💗 I'm really tempted to make it, but I don't know anyone who could use it. I suppose I could always donate it to a good cause, couldn't I? I haven't made button dolls, but I do remember them from when I was younger. What a great idea 😊
@@MelsYarniverse Yes very nostalgic. I also noticed one of the knitting patterns you flipped through was another jacket I knitted for the same daughter. I always look at the pattern books.
Oh, that's interesting! Yes, the Salvos here are more expensive than other thrift stores / op shops as well. I try to shop more in smaller community stores if I can, but I guess it's always worth having a look at the salvos, just in case 😊
yes the Salvos are not a 'not for profit' organization now, worldwide. And they even have an online store where you can buy higher priced items, vintage, antique, etc. They are out to make money, They still provide welfare services though.
Hi WitchyWendy👋 I absolutely love your name 😃 I remember in the 90's that Fergie was on every magazine and every TV channel down here in Australia. I don't know if it's just the things that I watch now (mostly crochet things on RUclips to be honest) but I just don't hear that much about her anymore. Thank you very much for the comment and the update. I hope the weather has been good up there in the UK, it's been quite cold down here this winter.
Idk why I always am heartbroken when I see beautiful knitted or crochet items donated. I found two ABSOLUTELY gorgeous finely crocheted tablecloths. They both had a few stains on them. I bought them anyway. In life - stains happen. I "think" in the older days, people used to dye their linens and other items tobhide the stains and make them "new". So, that's what I'm going to do. A natural coffee or tea dye will make these gorgeous items an ecru color. Who is to say someone won't spill on them again? Why trash an heirloom for a few stains (though I can't say someone trashed them per se, but "donated"). But, these have found a new home where my family will pass the treasures down, in honor of the person who painstakingly created them.
That's really beautiful 💗 yes, I love the idea of being able to salvage and repurpose a pre-loved item, especially a handmade one, and being able to give it life and love again 😊 We may not know why they were donated, but being able to love and cherish these items again just seems like the right thing to do doesn't it? I also really like your idea of dyeing them to cover up stains 👌
Hi Mel..I'm a kiwi that's just discovered crochet 😊🎉..where are you in Oz..I'd love to have a coffee and chat crochet ❤..if I make it over the ditch sometime..and you're interested in inspiring each other 😊
Get the stain wet and put castile soap on it. Scrub gently, rinse, and dry it in direct sunlight. Repeat a few times, and the stains will disappear. If you use tea or another coloring method, the stain will not disappear but will darken and still be visible.
I'm glad you like it! 😊 yes, I thought it was dear for an op shop, but a good price for a blanket also. Plus those colours are just too lovely to leave it there! 💗
I am sitting on a gold mine with all the buttons and crochet patterns I have here then 🤣 Did all of those knitting needles not give you a hint? *ducks* Those yarns are worth $10.30 ( probably usd) each for the Happy Sheep so you got quite a bargain there 😀 and yeah cannot find the baby merino. I crocheted a double blanket for our bed - oh that was a feat of endurance. I used big balls and did stripes of each ball and crocheted two panels then joined them. The blanket is definitely a work of love and I know you will give it that much love while you have it in your care. I found a copy of that book on Amazon lol but you got a way better bargain on price. I was thinking some closures on journal covers with some of the shank buttons and some of the bigger ones? LOVE the Halloween Afghan, kind of worth getting that book from Amazon lol Do you have a pattern for your lovely headscarf?
Oh Kerry, you absolutely are sitting on a goldmine! Have you seen the price of buttons at Spotlight lately? 😧 Crazy! Oh, thank you for researching the yarn. Jeez, I did get a bargain, didn't I? I found the Baby Merino on ravelry, and it's listed as discontinued, so I don't think I'll be able to get any more if I need it. Your blanket sounds amazing! What an effort! 🤩 And you found the Afghan book on Amazon! I got curious and had to look it up too, and wow, another bargain! It's a fantastic book, some great patterns in it 👍 I loved the Halloween one too, I'm thinking I might make a smaller version as a wall hanging? I think that could look pretty good if I can pull it off. I haven't done tapestry crochet before, so it would be a great test 😃 I do have a pattern for my headscarf! I was planning on doing a short tutorial on it. Would that be something you'd be interested in? 🤔
Would you believe I paid $20 for a button at Spotties many moons ago because it was shiny and pretty??? ONE button mind. Yes please on that scarf tutorial and if you ever figure out the wall hanging I would love to see that as well please 💖had I the funds right now I would get that book, who knows, it may still be there in a few weeks 😂
@silverpromidi ONE BUTTON??!! 😲 It must have been the absolute prettiest and shiniest button ever!! 😆 Well then, I will definitely get that headscarf tutorial up and running soon! 😃 And yes, if I work out the Halloween wall hanging, then I'll give that a go, too 😊 I'm sure the book will still be there for you, and hopefully, it'll go on sale soon and make it an extra bargain for you 🤞🤞I'll also keep my eye out for another copy for you x
Hi Esmeralda 👋 It looks to be just 2 rows of double crochet, followed by 2 rows of granny clusters. I'm sure I could work it out 😊 Have you been crocheting for long?

Kia Ora Jilly! 👋 Welcome to the crochet community! It's never too late to learn 😊 I'm in Ballarat in Victoria. So lovely. What are you working on currently?
Hey Mel..that's awesum..I love possum it sure is cuddly and warm 😊.. Ive finished 3 ponchos for family..as it gets pretty cold down under 😊..currently crocheting a beautiful asymmetrical scarf in sage green cotton mohair blend 🎉

Your bag sounds wonderful! Isn't it great that you found all the components you needed to make it, in op shops?! That's fantastic! And I'll bet it looks amazing, too! 😍
Wonderful thrift stores.
Aren't they great? I also like the smaller community ones, too 😊 Thanks for your comment 😊💗
❤nice video❤
Really glad you enjoyed it! 😃🙏💗
❤good video❤
Thank you so much! 🙏💗
The book was great. It would be nice if you picked one of those blankets and did a tutorial on how to make it. :-)
Hi again Jane😀👋 I would love to do a tutorial from that book as they are gorgeous blankets but I'm not sure of the legalities of showing patterns from a book still in production?🤔
@@MelsYarniverse yeah you are right
I never find crochet boos or hooks and I always thrift
Oh wow! Oh isn't that amazing! To see a pattern for something you actually made so long ago! That's really lovely 😊
We have the Salvation Army stores here in the USA but they’re so expensive!, it’s better to go to a yard sale tfs
Hi from the U.K. Fergie is still very much current - she still lives with Prince Andrew and attends royal events. She battling skin cancer right now x
@esmeraldagreen1992 Thanks so much for the tip, Esmeralda! That's very helpful 😊💗
I also heard that soaking them in dawn dish soap will most likely get the stains out too! Thank you for saving the items and restoring them! 🎉❤️
That’s the blanken I would have chosen
And $16 cheap
But dear for a opt shop
But still worth the buy
I'm glad you like it! 😊 yes, I thought it was dear for an op shop, but a good price for a blanket also. Plus those colours are just too lovely to leave it there! 💗
Great haul!
Thanks so much! 🙏💗 Was definitely worth the day out for sure! 😊
Me too im in Canada
Wow! Thanks for watching! 😊🙏💗
Make the Halloween blanket with it
Hiya 👋 I was thinking I m8ght make a smaller version and turn it into a wall hanging. Do you think that might look ok? 🤔
Oh that’s a massive salvos. I want to visit. Would you mind saying which one it is?
Hi 👋 The first Salvos was in Sebastopol in Ballarat - Beverin St &, Gray St, Sebastopol VIC 3356 😊
@@MelsYarniverse thanks Mel
@@christinacreatesau no problems! Enjoy your visit!😃💗
Spotlight sell it those cakes wool
And there add a plain colour to it
Thanks for that! 😊👍
I am sitting on a gold mine with all the buttons and crochet patterns I have here then 🤣
Did all of those knitting needles not give you a hint? *ducks*
Those yarns are worth $10.30 ( probably usd) each for the Happy Sheep so you got quite a bargain there 😀 and yeah cannot find the baby merino.
LOVE the Halloween Afghan, kind of worth getting that book from Amazon lol
Do you have a pattern for your lovely headscarf?
Oh Kerry, you absolutely are sitting on a goldmine! Have you seen the price of buttons at Spotlight lately? 😧 Crazy!
Oh, thank you for researching the yarn. Jeez, I did get a bargain, didn't I? I found the Baby Merino on ravelry, and it's listed as discontinued, so I don't think I'll be able to get any more if I need it.
Your blanket sounds amazing! What an effort! 🤩
And you found the Afghan book on Amazon! I got curious and had to look it up too, and wow, another bargain! It's a fantastic book, some great patterns in it 👍
I loved the Halloween one too, I'm thinking I might make a smaller version as a wall hanging? I think that could look pretty good if I can pull it off. I haven't done tapestry crochet before, so it would be a great test 😃
I do have a pattern for my headscarf!
Oh, and those buttons? Many are from my late MIL and also my late mum, so these go back to the 70s at least 😀
@silverpromidi ONE BUTTON??!! 😲 It must have been the absolute prettiest and shiniest button ever!! 😆
Well then, I will definitely get that headscarf tutorial up and running soon! 😃 And yes, if I work out the Halloween wall hanging, then I'll give that a go, too 😊
I'm sure the book will still be there for you, and hopefully, it'll go on sale soon and make it an extra bargain for you 🤞🤞I'll also keep my eye out for another copy for you x
@silverpromidi Oh, how lovely 💗 I'll bet there's some beauties in your collection 🤩💗
Is the salvos store at the start of the video in Victoria? Regional?
Yep, good eye! This one is in Ballarat, Vic 😃👍
Could you create a pattern of the stitches usedin the blanket you bought? I would love to make it.
Hi Esmeralda 👋 It looks to be just 2 rows of double crochet, followed by 2 rows of granny clusters. I'm sure I could work it out 😊 Have you been crocheting for long?
Hi Mel..im a kiwi thats just learned to crochet (60 😊)..where in Oz are you?.. id love to meet up for a coffee and a crochet chat ..if i make it over the ditch sometime 😊
Kia Ora Jilly! 👋
Welcome to the crochet community! It's never too late to learn 😊 I'm in Ballarat in Victoria. I just love NZ! 😍 I've been there for a holiday and didn't want to leave! 😆 My mum bought some possum wool from a yarn shop in Wellington, and she knitted me a scarf with it, and it's the softest thing I own!
Oh wow! Your scarf sounds amazing! 😍😃 Sage green is just a lovely colour, isn't it? And the mohair would make it super soft too! I'm sure your ponchos are gorgeous and warm as well!
@@MelsYarniverse I'm in Ararat now.
Oh, that's a lovely area 😊
Where are those op shops - they are so much more interesting than the ones near me.
These ones in this video were all in and around Ballarat in Victoria. I often find that the best op shops are in the rural areas 😃
“ as rare as hens teeth 🐓😂”
For the first time ever I'm actually thinking about this saying and the image of a chicken with teeth is terrifying to me🐔🦷
Hey Mel, where are these op shops?
Hiya 👋 These are all in Ballarat in Victoria 😊 I find rural op shops seem to have more crafty stuff in them 😊
Some of the stuff quite expensive :(
Hi Michelle 👋 yes, sometimes you can find a few cheap treasures, but you're right, the op shops are getting a lot more expensive lately
I watched this on twice lol are you going ok ??
Hi Debra 👋 All ok here, thank you for checking 🙏💗 Hope you are well ☺️
