Hi, too, learned to crochet with these wonderful little Susan Bates hooks. I have a very small hand so I could crochet for hours and hours without any problems. I had several sets of the more expensive hooks now, but I often go back to my old standby. I love that they are color-coded, appoint, a deep throat in our comfortable to hold.

I got a set of Clover Amour hooks for a great deal on Amazon. I have some of the larger sizes now. I loved them from the first stitch. I've been using them for years, and I still love them. I highly recommend them. I started out with Boye hooks.

I have Susan Bates hooks from the 1960's. They are smooth with no drag and are still rich in color. If you are getting Bates hooks search online for vintage ones made in America.

Been using Susan Bates hooks for many many years and have never had the coding come off. They actually get smoother.

I started with Susan bates and i love them..never had an issue with color. Ive tried alot of others but always go back to Susan bates. I did get the ones with the ergonomic handle .

Just came across your channel. Another crochet hook that I absolutely love is Addi. They come in various different designs ( comfort grip, swing, maxi swing and duett) I highly recommend them. 😃

So glad you have taken up crochet. I have a lot of Susan Bates crochet hooks and the color has never come off. I’m an old crochet woman with many years of crocheting

I will add I have passed on my good set of Susan bates to my daughter and bought myself a set of dots crochet hooks from we crochet that are wonderful and less expensive than clover hooks.

I’ve heard great things about the dots crochet hooks and definitely plan on looking more into them if I need new hooks in the future! And to answer your previous comment - I got the Susan Bates hooks from my local Hobby Lobby. Maybe they were just a bad batch.

I have been using Clover Amour hooks for about 7 years now. When I first got them, they were a game changer. I have used the Tulip Etimo (grey) hooks and like them as well. Both brands are pricey, but I found them both on sale. I paid $35 for my Clovers and about $50 for the Tulips. I'm glad you found them on sale and love them! Happy crocheting.

That’s a great deal on both types of hooks! The Tulip Etimo hooks are on my crochet bucket list

I used unbranded tapered aluminium hooks since learning how to crochet as a child I was ok with these until I started take my hoppy serious, fatigue and pain in my hands was too mush for me to handle so I tried clover amour loved to crochet with so mush because it was way less painful to crochet using a clover amour hook, after that I tried tulip etimo which I like very mush but ended up being my travel crochet hooks because as a set they came with a very practical and convenient case. But for the hooks it’s self the clover amour and tulip etimo does not have any serious differences. For me the clover are smoother and a little cheaper though.

I've used a susan bates for amigurumi and the color has never worn off. I got my first clover recently and so far it's really nice. My favorite hook was from the dollar tree. It has a plastic ergonomic grip that I love. It still holds up to the clover surprisingly. The clover glides better, but not a lot better. I'm still very impressed with my dollar tree hook. But I do plan on switching to clovers over time. I like the head because it's a lot like my dollar tree hook too.

That’s awesome! I haven’t had any luck yet in finding crochet items at my local dollar trees, but I always check!

@@makscozyworld Yes especially since they turned into dollar tree plus, the crochet stuff has pretty much disappeared. They randomly get restocked so checking is always a good idea. 👍

Love my Clovers but recently I bought a couple of sets of the Dots hooks from We Crochet and I love them. They cost about $25 a set.

I went and purchased a singe hook from Amazon for the Clovers to test it out... Loved it (bought the 5mm) then waited for Joanns to have a 60% off coupon and snagged them. They are smooth like butter xD lol.
Prior to the Clovers I was using a set I bough off of Amazon called Yarniss that also are very nice. Didn't pay too much for them and I got alot of hooks up to a 10mm with notions and metal threading needles. After comparing them, yes the Yarniss did drag a little, but it wasn't enough for me to completely stop using them. They are now my travel set and the clovers stay home lol.

That’s awesome! Having a separate set for travel is a great idea, if one gets lost it’s as much of a big deal.

I have used Susan Bates hooks with the bamboo handles for years. Never had any problem with coating coming off and I don’t like any other style. No hand pain either because the bamboo handle is bigger than just the plain hook. Started with the plain hook before the bamboo and had pain then so I bought the bamboo and no more problems!

Thank you! 😊 Yes, I have found that a handle on the hook has made a huge difference in hand pain!

Did you purchase the susan bates hooks from Amazon? I've realized a lot of the hooks sold on a Amazon are fakes. I had a set of Susan bates hooks that were nice and smooth and consistent. Ordered the same set for my daughter on Amazon and later realized they were fake. Packaging and everything looked basically the same but they dragged, coating started chipping, and the hooks were super inconsistent. I wonder if your Susan bates hooks were fakes.

I love my Amour hooks! I have a complete set. So that’s 26 hooks total. That count includes the two sizes exclusive to Japan.🪝
