To eliminate my chain row curving I use a hook that’s .5mm larger than what the pattern calls for, make the chain then switch my hook to the size that’s .5mm smaller and go to town. That is much easier than guessing how long of a tail you need. It’s a cool method though for a smaller project. Maybe a washcloth.
If you are worried about not having enough tail and you can use a second ball of yarn (or perhaps even the two ends of one ball ? - I haven’t tried it.), then you can do this technique without guessing a tail length. For a right-handed person make a slip knot in each yarn ball. Place the two slip knots on your hook and hold the yarn from the right-hand loop (if the hook is pointing to the left) as you would normally. Let the yarn from the other loop rest between the first finger and thumb of your left hand. Yarn over with the right-hand yarn and pull through both loops. Then proceed with the technique - wrapping the left-hand yarn from the front, up and over, then yarn over with the right and pull through both. It does mean cutting the left-hand yarn at the end of the chain and weaving in a couple of extra tails but there is no stressing over the right length of tail to leave for your chain (and this uses a lot of tail for a short length of chain). I have been using this icord technique to make small projects with and enjoy it, but could not work out the best way to do it for large projects like blankets for a double bed or larger. I don’t know why I never thought to do it a you explained but now that you said it, it makes so much sense. Thank you! This is called the Longtail Foundation Chain. Also, you can get the same results using just one strand of yarn, called Forward Loop Chain (also another version called Forward Loop Box Chain) by using just your normal working strand of yarn, by casting on a Forward Loop (‘twisting” your loop before putting it on the hook/ casting on). The Forward Loop Chain and the Forward Loop Box Chain were created by Sue Perez (Mrs. Micawber) who was inspired to create it by Vashti Braha. Sue also created a second version of this, which gives you a chain on 3 surfaces, vs 2, the Forward Loop Box Chain. You work it the same as the Forward Loop Chain, but after yarning over, you’ll be pulling through 3 loops (vs 2) on your hook.

Cuando hago cordones de este tipo, lo calculo de forma rudimentaria: tejo una cantidad determinada de puntos, los destejo, mido la cantidad de hilo utilizado y luego calculo cuánto será necesario para realizar todo el cordón.... Pero en los mensajes de este tutorial he visto que alguien explica con mucho detalle una técnica usando 2 ovillos de hilo (o 1 ovillo pero usando los 2 extremos de hilo) y otra persona dice que ya determinó que en general se necesita una cantidad aproximada a 6 veces el hilo inicial... por allí en los comentarios están estas explicaciones. 🤔

When I returned to crocheting after 40 years and was creating work that tended to look like the first example, I eventually recalled that I had begun using a larger hook for my foundation row. For me, that resulted in an evenly tensioned foundation row, no curve, and set my gauge correctly. Currently I am doing only some simple amigurumi, and only appendages have a chained foundation row; I can produce. But I am happy to see alternative examples that avoid the classic chained foundation, including this one. I don't recall ever seeing an instruction or pattern that avoided the pitfails (curving and a thin starting edge) in my early work, and that included quite a few baby items and afghans.

@@natalliastsezhkina4020 she also didn't leave a turning chain after she chained 18. Instead of going into the 2nd chain from the hook. Failing to leave a turning stitch will always create some issue with the work. ;)

Oh so all you did was a single crochet foundation row. You can also do a half double foundation row as well as a double crochet foundation row. To me it’s all about saving time when your pattern calls for a gazzilion chains to start with. For example: start with 269 chains. Row 2: single crochet in the 2nd chain and every chain to the end. So instead I just do the single crochet foundation chain. Saves so much time and your foundation chains turns out so much more flexible and straight, no so strained and wonky. I love it!

I’ve been crocheting for a very long time- never saw this final technique. A very good lesson I’ve learned. I too would greatly appreciate if when beginning the video, post what I’ll be learning; what is being shared - it is definitely a better way from what I’m doing now! Also, I , too, learn new techniques and retain this important info better with captioning telling me what I’m being shown - visual is fine, and for me, spoken directions help me grasp what is being taught. This looks really good, will give it a try. I have been trying to use foundation crochet as a more relaxed basis but it is a bit of a headache trying to keep track of it especially with a fuzzy yarn. Thanks for sharing, always good to learn new ways of doing things!
Clever!👍 The only thing that prevents "my" crochet work from curling is to either use a larger hook or be extremely conscientious about my tension because I tend to crochet with a tension that's usually too tight but this does look it might help but definitely looks like a really great way to achieve a sturdy foundation row for many crochet projects. I have used this method for years, it is called long tail foundation chain I think. in addition to being stretchy, it is much faster. I find crocheting into a chain tedious!
@@karenloewenthal1824 what happens if you want to use this method to start a large blanket with say 140 stitches or larger even. How would you know how much tail to use? Is there a trick to that?

That's a interesting method, it looks great. I love watching videos like this, because it allows me to see all the creativity involved in the problem solving aspect of our craft❤ I'd imagine that this would be a good method for projects like a scarf, or maybe a blanket that is made up of multiple long thin strips. But, it might become a bit... pesky, if making something that's a few feet/meters wide. Maybe? Have you use this method in a project that is on the wider side, like a few feet or meters wide? How do you measure the tail? For example, say the project needs to be 10in(25cm) wide, would you measure that width plus (idk) 3 more inches/centimeters? Thank you for sharing ❤
I totally love the idea of this foundation stitch. I’ve used it for like small projects and scarves. I use the other method when I’m doing like really long projects where you’re not gonna necessarily know how much you need to pull out of skein. With my luck, I would probably pull out way too much, and have waste yarn.

the first one was done with too tight initial chain and the second with loose chain, that's why they have different direction of the curve

I have used this method for years, it is called long tail foundation chain I think. in addition to being stretchy, it is much faster. I find crocheting into a chain tedious!
@@karenloewenthal1824 what happens if you want to use this method to start a large blanket with say 140 stitches or larger even. How would you know how much tail to use? Is there a trick to that?

I just learned to crochet an i cord, this was the same technique as the i cord stitch I learned. Didn’t realise it could be used at the start of a project though. Thanks.

To avoid curling, I usually make my chain using 1/2 to 1 size larger hook, then use a smaller hook for the rest of the project. I'll have to try this!

That's a interesting method, it looks great. I love watching videos like this, because it allows me to see all the creativity involved in the problem solving aspect of our craft❤
I'd imagine that this would be a good method for projects like a scarf, or maybe a blanket that is made up of multiple long thin strips. But, it might become a bit... pesky, if making something that's a few feet/meters wide. Maybe?
Have you use this method in a project that is on the wider side, like a few feet or meters wide? How do you measure the tail? For example, say the project needs to be 10in(25cm) wide, would you measure that width plus (idk) 3 more inches/centimeters?

You can leave a 3 times tail for the braid you will make.

I totally love the idea of this foundation stitch. I’ve used it for like small projects and scarves. I use the other method when I’m doing like really long projects where you’re not gonna necessarily know how much you need to pull out of skein. With my luck, I would probably pull out way too much, and have waste yarn.
