Do Benzos Work for generalized anxiety disorder?

- We might think of benzodiazepines as medications that treat anxiety well. However, in a meta-analysis by Hidalgo et al. the effect size for benzodiazepines was small at 0.38. Medication in general for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) did not perform much better with a cumulative effect size of 0.39.

Klonopin helps me tremendously with GAD, and I have been on it for about 10 years at 3 mg. Would you cite the meta-analysis?

It depends on what type of anxiety and whether or not it’s a chronic condition or not. For someone who just has anxiety or panic attacks in certain situations like when they are flying or have to see their family on the holidays it actually works wonders. When it comes to long term chronic anxiety they don’t work because you quickly build up a tolerance and dependence and when that happens it’s hell to get off of them
Yeah not generalized anxiety disorder but panic disorder is a whole different freaking world if you suffer with it you know, just knowing you have a safety blanket there in case s*** hits the fan, will make you not want to take them as much, because it's a safety blanket it can be almost Placebo like just to know you have them, I'm practically disabled because of this and it's not fair to me that I have to sit here and be put on another SSRI when I've been on every SSRI and snri and beta-blockers which landed me in the hospital once, my whole entire life for extended periods of years at a time not just a couple weeks because my stomach hurt I know the pharmacokinetics of them and how they work, it takes more than a month for therapeutic effects to occur and even increases in dosages, but I'm depressed at the fact that I have panic disorder not having just depression
Ehhh I have gad and I’m going insane from it off meds
I was on Xanax at 17 from doc
And just got off it last year at 33
It was hell
If that’s my only treatment I’m screwed
Causw I’ll never go back on those again
SSRI are pretty good at treating GAD or PDD which is mostly neurotic/anxiety. See one of his other videos on MDD

@@talksick508 there are many types of SSRI and SNRI each can be more selective for one thing or the next. In other words they aren't all the same or have the same sides. You may also work better on Lithium or Ability.
Weight gain is an incidental side effect. Serotonin doesn't actually increase weight. In other words maybe you eat more when you are feeling better.
Viagra or similar can help with the sexual sides.
And daily vigorous exercise can greatly control anxiety to where you may not need any medication or just a low dose. This can also help control the weight gain.
Having good vitals (BP heart rate etc) is also critical for stress, something like Lisinopril or metoprolol can have a large effect on general anxiety, if your overall health is not ideal.
Therapy and mindfulness practices are generally useful as well. There are over 400 types, it's always worth trying a new provider or technique

Benzodiazepines will almost certainly work and relieve tge anxiety symptoms often completely but as is well understood, they have limits in that the body gets accustomed to their presence and makes adjustments so now you need to increase the dose. This trend will continue without a top limit.
Short term they work marvelous long term not so much

Those meta analysis studies are a load of sh*te. All studies are subject to the bias of those deciding the rules for them. Anyone saying that benzos aren’t very effective for anxiety is talking out their ass. They are the most effective medications there are for anxiety of all kinds
100% agree. When you're in the grip of a panic attack there is literally nothing else. When I became seriously mentally unwell, I couldn't eat or leave the house. I'd take just 1mg of Ativan around lunchtime and I'd feel like my old self again for the rest of the day; within 30 mins I felt ready to go shopping, take the bus and all sorts. So, yeah, it definitely works... and quickly. I suspect that's the real reason why they'd rather people didn't take it 🤔

That's because 98 percent of people don't need them. I've had 3 scripts plus a cousin that got em for false reasons therefore i refuse them...But when you really do, just having them can prevent a panic attack.
I find just knowing I've got them keeps the anxiety away and allows me a feeling of control and if I did become anxious I can take some.

Benzo’s should be only used in an emergency in my opinion. And to be used as sparse as possible.

Correct, like people like myself who have panic disorder and cannot get any prescription for a benzo, only offered every SSRI and snri or beta blockers that I've basically been on every single one my whole life, they have not worked because I'm depressed at the fact that I have panic disorder and have traumas that I cannot shake with just therapy, PTSD moments, these moments will have me in panic that can last for over 10 hours. But if I knew I had something there to take if this happened, it could work as a placebo effect and I wouldn't even have to take them, but there are times where I feel I would need to take them. I'm tired of this benzo Holocaust and everybody's saying that the doctors are the devil and the benzos are the devil no they are not I would love to know the genius that came out of the woodwork and said that the world needs to be off their benzos right now, because that's not right
Or after a long night of fashionable recreational drug use.
