Xanax

  • Xanax won FDA approval in 1981 and remains among the 25 most prescribed drugs and the most frequently used drug in the benzodiazepine family. Indications for Xanax include moderate to severe anxiety and panic, although in clinical practice it seems widely distributed to combat almost any stress in everyday life.
By itself Xanax may be misused and abused but the likelihood of a fatal overdose appears remote. Unfortunately in today’s times with widespread opioid abuse and excessive alcohol consumption, people tend to combine drugs. In these circumstances Xanax dramatically increases the potential for unintended but nevertheless lethal overdoses.
Estimates suggest an 800% increase in the number of opioid deaths involving benzodiazepines of which Xanax remains the most frequent example. Approximately 9 out of every 10 deaths related to benzodiazepines also involve at least 1 opioid or other psychoactive substance. And in more than 1 in 3 opioid related deaths, benzodiazepines were a complicating factor.
Currently in the midst of the opioid epidemic, the government appears intent to discourage prescriptions for Xanax and related drugs in favor of SSRIs such as Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro and their various generic equivalents.
Xanax gained notoriety as a street drug. Known as Xannies, Blue Footballs, Ladders, Bricks, Z Bars and Benzos the contents may be quite varied without any guarantee of the presence or purity of Xanax or its generic alprazolam. Not infrequently these tablets are actually manufactured by dealers with the aid of pill presses utilizing ingredients of uncertain nature.
When used appropriately Xanax offers the potential for significant benefit. Unfortunately its short half life compared to other benzodiazepines increases risks for dependence, withdrawal and addiction.

Xanax was a life saver for my severe panic disorder. It was the only medication that decreased my anxiety significantly enough for me to work successfully. I hate having to worry that doctors may stop prescribing benzodiazepines because they are being abused, for some people it allows us to function better as productive citizens.

and for some people, it ends up causing the symptoms it was originally meant to treat, and leads to uncontrollable fear / panic / paralyzing depression / s**cidal urges... then you're addicted to high dose of this devil's molecule while experiencing worse symptoms than ever.. keep that in mind while you're worrying.. we're all different, and there's a really good reason why doctor's SHOULD be hesitant to prescribe it. Then when those first two months of physical withdrawals are over the paws post-acute withdrawals could last up to five years depending on how bad and how long you been using for. It takes a long time for our brain to heal itself from the damage we put it through just thank God it can heal but it takes a long time and is uncomfortable but it does come back.

Xanax has been a wonder drug for me. I’ve taken 0.5mg at night for the last 12 years for nocturnal anxiety/insomnia. I’ve never felt a need (or desire) to increase my dose or take it any other time than before bed.
Sure, I’d probably experience withdrawal effects if I stopped taking it, but why would I stop? Before taking it, I had major nighttime anxiety and insomnia with significant impact on my life. I became a crash test dummy for a series of SSRIs (Paxil etc.) and sleep medication and nothing worked. Sedation meds turned me into a zombie but did nothing to calm my mind.
With Xanax, I sleep well, as my mind is calm. Other than an initial dullness on waking, I have zero side effects.
I can’t understand the desire to want to abuse this medication or take it for recreational purposes. Perhaps that’s only a desire that manifests itself in people who don’t need it in the first place.
There’s a difference between use and abuse.

I have chronic anxiety and panic disorder I have been on xanax for for 43 years I got to ride a bus for the 1st time in my forties and my fifties I flew on a plane for my 1st time and went to a different state where my son lived I was in a different state for a first time in my whole life I ote a plane the 1st time in my whole life I rode the community RrA bus for the 1st time ,if somebody gets drunk on a xanax they don't need it and if they fall asleep they don't need it. Hollywood can get any drug. I've talked to many psychiatrist and I get called in by law to another Doc who says what I need. I'm in there with Doc for 5 min. then I also was told by a Judge ,I was worded to stay on xanax because at first I didn't want to believe I had this problem. But they were right .l am able to open curtains, fly, ride on bus and go to store. But remember if one feels drunk you don't need it. You should w0ant to go do things you never could do. I went to a crystal cave at 55.

It has a high abuse potential because of its middle /short
half- life. Not to mention the tolerance, that builds up very quickly. I have been using it for six years because of anxiety disorder and insomnia. Until I started experiencing micro-withdrawals in between a dosage and the next one. Its effect only lasted four, six hours. So I had to switch to Clonazepam, a benzo with a longer half-life.

Thank you doctor for this comprehensive overview. Xanax saves my life every time I take it, but unfortunately long-term has destroyed it. I am helplessly addicted and there's no end in sight. Trying to come off of this medication is a special kind of torture that leads to suicidal urges in some of us. It should ONLY be used short term, because once you're addicted, your life is over. :'(

I have sleep narcolepsy so why would I need this drug. Sadly sleep narcolepsy sometimes causes confusion and bad choices on its own. I try to take my time now to think things through.
I also have COPD and take both opioids and soma.
Went off of the seroquel 2 months ago cold turkey and I feel so alive.

I have been on and off all forms of benzos since I was 20 I am 40 now, I was never addicted to benzos even though before I knew any better when I was 22 til pry 23.5 or 24 a Dr was prescribing me 1 mg of Xanax 3 times a day as well as 10 mg of Valium 3 times a day as well as 1 mg of Klonopin 3 times a day. All I told the Dr was that I was having severe panic attacks as I was at that time, I wasn't though thank God taking all of this everyday some days maybe but most days as needed. Well I broke my leg pretty bad when I was 22 so after 2 large plates on each side of my leg and 32 screws a Dr was then prescribing me 10 mg of oxycodone/acetaminophen 325 4 times a day. I did get addicted to opioids throughout time at pry the 10 year mark of being on oxy I did become addicted but still a mostly functioning addict. (Oh at 24, being all fucked up all the time mostly and being a single father of two sons at the time ages 6 months and 4 years my sister who is a nurse just came over one day as I'm slumped over on the couch I imagine, she simply asked what in the fuck does your Dr have you on??) I said go look in my medicine cabinet ? As I wasn't trying to hide anything because I didn't think I was doing anything wrong . All I knew was I was in major pain and had a lot of anxiety, as well as a few other issues but nothing major , those 2 were the "worst". But after I told her / showed her she asked me if she and my parents could go with to my next appt , I said sure why not ? Well , that appt didn't go very well for the Dr 😶, I wonder where he is now.....
But my whole point of this story is simply this, you are only as addicted to something as you will let yourself become, I know that it can seem hard, daunting, even imaginable, or impossible to the thought of not having something (your case benzos) well my case after my pain drs finally dried up I became addicted to heroin and then fentanyl since 2019. I felt hopelessly addicted because I was and at the end of my addiction to opiates/opioids I was doing between 100 to 300$ of fentanyl (1/3 to 1 gram of powder FENTANYL EVERYDAY for just about 4 months) I just sat in my house everyday alone for months , getting high on that shit, alone to none the less. Well like I said, it is all up to you how addicted you REALLY are, yes I know your in pain from it and you feel sick as fuck with out your benzos. After years of being in and out of AA rooms due to the court system I fully believe now that it's all in our heads so you have to find your own way to trick your brain and tell it that you don't need that anymore and that you no longer want to live that way that you have been , forced to live now. In my case I knew for a fact after 10+ overdoses from Heroin or fentynil I would be dying from a drug addicted death ☠️💀🖤 . I just kept thinking about all of the people I would never even knew that existed that were benefiting off of my and all others like my addictions. And the words kept echoing through my mind (Dieing from a drug addicted death) I just kept thinking about how it was all just poison, and as at the time I absolutely LOVED just about any form of opiate. I began to subconsciously trick my brain going from like I said absolutely loving the drug to feeling sick to my stomach some months later even thinking about using it again. I know that your addiction and mine were different and the same way that alcoholism is different from ours as well. They really are not, the easiest way I can explain it is what I just said , those words echoing in my mind constantly and just thinking about my family MY SONS rather mainly crying over my casket as they tried to find good things to say about how my life ended, well you can't nobody can find good words about a loved one dying from any sort of addiction. I just kept training myself to think how much it pissed me the fuck off 😡, that I was letting SOMETHING control my life 😡. If I am gonna die , it's going to be on my terms, not for some asshole idiot pry half around the world making money and buying expensive cars and eating better food than me all from MY addiction. I can't stand the thought of how completely insignificant that my life is completely NOT To all of these low life degenerate fuck bags and how they COULDN'T CARELESS If my son's grow up without a dad or even grow up at all. AND ON TOP OF ALL OF THOSE THOUGHTS AND ALL, Just think about this real quickly (or over and over and over and over again, that those shit ass fucking people "poison peddlers" Wouldn't in a million Billion years EVER do the drugs that they are supplying to ruin your and my lives. It's not that stupid rule u may have heard "don't get high on your own supply" drug dealers try to live by, it's the literal fact that they know it's poison and wouldn't be caught dead putting that shit in their bodies. So why would we ? Just back up and think about the point in your life before whatever drug or substance that started abusing YOU (Not vice versa) . But think of that time and how you can return to that person that was , before the addiction . Don't just change one thing about your life or self change it all !!! That's what I do everyday is everything different completely that I would had done, thought , or said before. BUT , the biggest problem with all of this is simply . It won't happen over night but only after , day in day out slowing down do one thing different everyday or twice a week at first, make a Dr appointment if you can, a dentist appt , seek out 12 step programs at first if that sort of thing does help you (it didn't me but did at times rather ) talk to people , hell if you ain't got anyone to talk to right now other that yourself well talk to yourself. Just NEVER GIVE UP !!! You can't !!! You will make some mistakes hell you may even relapse , but it didn't happen all over night so you can't fix it in one night either and don't try either, just systematically one step at a time no matter how small or big just do different things or think different ways. You have to change the way you think and react to situations and things in life otherwise, you will doom your self to either an early grave or that you will be destined to repeat the same mistakes , over and over and over again until your either A. Dead, B. In prison or C. Not able to function at all anymore and if you end up really unlucky you'll still be alive and with Brain damage and you'll never again have the chance to try to change, yourself and your life. My younger child found me halfway dead 3 times and having to breathe for me one of those times until the ambulance arrived. Well Fuck that ! And fuck me for ever getting on the path, to where my sweet young innocent son had to see his father, like that..... All because , some asshat piece of shit drug dealers throughout the world, would rather destroy Lives every single day, than actually work or contribute to the world or society..... $ Money $ The root of ALL EXISTENCE OF EVIL....... SORRY THIS WAS THIS LONG, I HOPE SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT READS THIS MAYBE GOT EVEN JUST ONE THING OUT OF IT THAT HELPED THEM, THAT IN ITSELF ALMOST, MAKES MY PREVIOUS ADDICTION, WORTH IT...... I pray for each and every one of you out there still struggling with these issues. But, there is hope.. I promise you there is, if there was hope for a hopeless fucking junkie like me. Well you will be fine I promise you and trust me. Give it a try,...

The withdrawals are worse than heroin and these pills are more addictive than Heroin. However, as with chronic severe pain and addiction, in some cases the benefits outweigh the same qualities. 23 years on prescribed Xanax here. I know better than most docs what this substance is all about. I always find it funny when "medical personnel" try to explain Xanax like they know all about it. Saying withdrawal symptoms only last for a couple of weeks or a month at most. When I ask them how much Xanax they have consumed they mostly say none. That pretty much ends the conversation. I stopped taking Xanax about two years ago and I'm still suffering from heavy withdrawal. Heavy tremors, body zaps, feeling of being electrocuted, hyperacusis, coordination issues, increased social fear, fragile fear mechanisms (fight/flight response), light sensitive, memory loss, extreme muscle tension in my jaw, legs, neck, back, feet. Dear doctor,
Would you kindly do a video on how to heal the benzo withdrawal damaged GABA receptors. My best friend is severely sleep deprived after coming off of her meds of 38 years. Since she tapered off Ativan it's been very difficult to get a good night's sleep without taking an occasional xanax. Wow, these pills turn around and bite you like a firey serpent! Lord please reset and restore her circadian rhythm. Many have said it took 2 years to recovery from the benzo damage to the brain and whatever else. Thank you, Sir for your work!

I need help. I think I’m gonna die. I’ve been on benzodiazepines for about 6 years and I’m taking 0.5 5 times a day. But I’m having micro withdrawals because I believe I developed a tolerance for the drug. I have the worst anxiety . It’s 20 times worse than when I first started . I really just want to get off but there’s no help anywhere. I’m hopeless and I don’t know what to do. Someone knowledgeable please help. How do I taper off. No DR wants to help me at all and I’ve seen so many. This is so sad

I looked into the Ashton Manual and I’ve successfully lowered my dose. Originally I was at 2.5mg a day and now I’m at 0.375 mg a day. Almost taking nothing now. Sorry for not updating. It was actually quite easier than I thought. It just takes time and effort. If anyone is going through what I was going through please reach out. It’s not hard to lower the dose. My case I want to say is the worst in the world. So if I could do it I’m positive anyone can. I’m still taking a little bit so I’m not quite finished yet with my taper but it’s ok. Hopefully soon. And yes I do feel less anxious and more alert. I feel better.

Tim Tully it took me a year to taper I know. Wasn’t difficult though. I’m off of it and a senior in college at ASU and have made deans every session. I don’t even take regular semester classes. 6 weeks max for semester long classes. Don’t place your judgements on other people man. Why are you mad? You don’t have to warn me or prove anything. People post their horror stories and people don’t post their positive stories.
