Lorazepam

  • Lorazepam also known as Ativan remains an extraordinarily popular anti-anxiety drug. Lorazepam belongs to the benzodiazepam family of sedative/hypnotics along with Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Halcion and Restoril. Even though it was FDA approved in 1977, this 40+ year old drug will be prescribed over 14 million times this year as a tranquilizer and sleeping pill.
Unfortunately while lorazepam may comfort the nerves, it does not calm gastrointestinal or cardiovascular manifestations of anxiety. Lorazepam does not treat depression and should be avoided in those with obstructive sleep apnea and COPD associated with incipient respiratory failure.
Increasingly doctors are switching people with anxiety from lorazepam to SSRI or related drugs including Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, Effexor or Cymbalta in the false belief that these alternative drugs necessarily represent a safer class of medicines. Even more worrisome, some people with insomnia receive prescriptions for Seroquel or its generic equivalent in the atypical antipsychotic class of drugs.
By itself lorazepam seems very safe. Combining lorazepam with alcohol or opioids readily results in overdose, profound sedation, respiratory depression and death.

Ativan the second time and I prerferd it over the chlordiazepoxide. No crazy dreams. Either way though. Without benzos those withdrawals would have killed me. No doubt.

Thank you for your very thorough explanation. I have Bipolar 1 (rapid cycling). Lorazepam is one of the meds I take on a daily basis. I want to break free. My brain has depended on it for the past 20 years. Psychologically speaking, I want and need to kick my dependence. Originally, I was prescribed 4mg daily, took it for 13 years. Then, I began to taper, with the permission of my psychiatrist. He said I was the only patient he ever had who wanted to take this step. It was a struggle to endure the physical side effects of each decrease. Nine months later I made it down to 1mg and I thought I was in Hell. Won't go in to details there. My psychiatrist was there for me when I needed him. I went back to 2.5 mg and my tortured state of mind improved. Life resumed. Several years later I tried again, but could not make it past 2 mg. I am determined to try again, under the supervision of my psychiatrist. Any decrease I achieve will be a victory. As I turn 60, I give myself a second chance, to live this decade my life with less medication. I have been building a tool box of new skills, including CBT and counselling.

Maybe educate yourself further, ever ask why he or she is trying to switch you? Doctors have been making a potentially fatel mistake since the release of Valium in 1963 of overly prescribing benzodiazepines to patients for any number of issues for longer then recommended durations. These drugs are suppose T be used for emergencies online not therapeutic dosage for extended durations. Ask your pharmacist, 2-4 weeks max because of the harm they cause to the CNS/PNS. It blows my mind how ignorant people can be... It's a drug lol, you don't think a drug which messes with a person's homeostasis and CNS/PNS comes at a cause? Especially one that effects your GabaA, Glutamate receptors and CNS/PNS? You don't have a symptom yet... Keep that in mind, according to the FDA who published a black box warning on Sept 23/2020 (you can google this), over 72% of those who took these as prescribed either regularly or as needed will have terrible symptoms and that's just the percentage that they know about. 10-15% will have protracted withdrawal lasting up to four years. If you think your safe because you won't withdrawal from the medication think again, Benzos is one of few medications which produces a effect called "tolerance withdrawal" where it doesn't matter how much of the drug you take now, your body is simply tapped out and can't use it... This causes a back fire withdrawal. So even if you're taking the medication you still go through withdrawal. Then there's rebound anxiety and cause and effect. Where your anxiety seems worse so you feel like now you need the medication or the medication is stopping the anxiety but in reality the benzos have started to dim your GabaA natural ability to stop anxiety on its own which is why it may feel like anxiety has gotten so much worse.
You are already experiencing on of its sinister effects, paradoxical effects where you feel like other medications make you worse or produce the opposite effect.
Instead of claiming that doctors work for you or that your doctor is doing you wrong... You need to ask him or her for a exist plan so that when the time comes you have a taper plan you can use to get off. The problem is that most doctors aren't trained to recognize withdrawal symptoms from benzos. They can produce hundreds, Heather Ashton doctors 90 symptoms but patients have had hundreds that don't match up or make sense. And rehabs are useless because this isn't a addiction issue this is a dependency issue. Not the same thing. I'll pray for you, the stand taper can take 9-18 months followed by your CNS needing to recover which can take another few years. You're doctor is trying to switch you because doctors are becoming liable for having you on a drug that's meant for 2-4 weeks max. Good lucm

If you suffer from transient insomnia, stress, or anxiety, this is an excellent drug to have as a back up. I've been taking it for years on an as need basis, but I can do without it as well. It gives me an extra two hours of sleep during stressful times, something that can make or break how you function the next day at work. Treat it with respect and you'll be fine. If Lorazepam still causes sedation after taking it intermittently for years you most likely have not developed tolerance or dependence. Sedation is a Lorazepam side effect that wears off when taken often.

This was working great for me for about four weeks, then suddenly my dose made me hallucinate and go numb all over. I had to stop use, luckily my withdrawal was minor and lasted about four days. I would stare off into space and I was very emotional, especially depressed. I only took 0.5mg every other night, sometimes every night. It was the only thing that stopped the panic attacks and let me sleep. I've taken this PRN before as well and never had this reaction. Not sure what happened, but just followed doctor's instructions.

I have repeating epileptic grand mal seizures I was on nitrazipam for the epilepsy for a good many years without much issue but afters hospital visit due to missing a couple of doses of the nitrazipam and due to the condition. Progressing to one fit per seizure to 3 to 4 or 8 one day and now I'm on 2mg of lorazipam and I've been on valium nitrazipam and clonazipam in hospital post fits and seeing as I can't function on normal epilepsy meds. Benzos were discovered to be perfect at age 16 I'm in my 30s now and I'm not sure why but out of all the meds I've been on these ativan as you call them really leave me clear headed and I feel like I haven't even taken anything I took 3mg because I thought they wernt strong I slept like a log for 6 hours these lorazipam are way stronger than even diazipam but at 2mg as a preventative epileptic med I can safely say the Dr's have finally got me on a medication I can function on just 9 more months and I can get my diving started and being epileptic I always thought ths never happening so God bless whoever invented lorazipam and gave me my life back tbh I honestly thought clonazipam was ativan that's what they give me iv after loads of fits clonazipam is great u feel like a marshmallow lol

      @emmanuelrogercosta9671 2 года назад

I take 5 mg of lorazepam a day and was a green smoker way before I took any benzo.Today I smoke about half a gram a day. I'd say the only thing that's unsafe about it is getting used to the combination (which feels "good" on a recreational level) and becoming irritable and sad when you're missing the green or completely out of your mind when you're missing the lorazepam. On the lorazepam though, I smoke less than I would if I didn't take anything at all (or if I took a different benzo), not only because of the CNS depression, there's something about the anxiolytic/euphoric effect that is complementary to that of cannabis in a weird effective way. Every benzo kinda does that but I feel lorazepam and clonazepam are the best. That's just my personal experience, hope it answered your question.

I've been taking Xanax for over 30 years and very recently was switched to clonazepam and ended up having an "allergic" type reaction.
I'm now on Ativan 4mg daily which I think is going ok so far. Ultimately I was working on a very slow weaning process from Xanax and was at 2 mg when I was switched and that switch created a level of panic/anxiety that I haven't had since I first started having these issues.
Once I feel more stable with this, I plan to continue to wean off simply because I'm tired of doctors switching things up with zero regard to the effect it has on their patient. Big Pharma and the rest will eventually be regretting their decision to screw people over because they want to make an extra trillion dollars. It's done far more harm than good regarding the switching of meds. Fingers crossed this will do the trick for the time being.

In April he was taking Ativan for Akathisia the whole month and then they stopped on him suddenly
Now I just found out about the past few days
It’s supposed to be a prn but its been given for 12 days in a row..
      Hospital is hiding something!!
I hope you feel better soon..

Ativan is generally Safe ! I use it on the low dose use and it has helped me tremendously. Talk with your doctor if your thinking you need this med be smart and use common sense with your health :-)

Not safe at all if you use it for longer time. It causes dependence, needing higher doses the longer you use it and addiction in which you suffer serious withdrawal symptoms if you try to stop taking the med

I was put on Lorazepam back in June when my brother died from Covid. I was so distraught over him passing away, I couldn't get control of my emotions. So the Dr put me on 1mg of Lorazepam. I am trying to taper myself off. I take a half in the morning and half a pill at night. But there have been 2 times in the mornings I took lorazepam later than usual in morning, and my heart took off racing out of control then my blood pressure spikes. So I went to ER both times because of that feeling!! Felt like I was running track but not doing anything except sitting. It really has me concerned on how to get off of this prescription.?? Will I need to cut down to 0.25 mg? And how long will that take for it to finally get out of my system?? I'm really tired of being on it. I want to feel normal again. I do take Synthroid, estradiol, and brand Toprol XL 100mg in morning and Nifedipine 30 mg at night for my blood pressure. Too much medication becomes like vegetable soup. I wanna get off Lorazepam first!! Help me out.. Thnku

Be more consistent with your schedule, and take it slowly. If you're having withdrawals already, then it's no use to try and push yourself off it in too small of a time.

Is he really a doctor? The drug family is called Benzodiazepines, not Benzodiazepam. Lorazepam is an anxiolytic minor tranquilizer often known by it's trade name Ativan. It is not a sedative hypnotic like Flurazepam or a muscle relaxant like Diazepam (Valium). I am glad he's not my doctor.

Many members of my family have used Ativan daily for decades. One family member 4mg daily for decades. Their doctor told them eventually this was too much. It's highly addictive. I know it has helped people, and I don't want to discredit that. But I do want to highlight that it is highly addictive. Please get help from many avenues (therapy, meds, etc). My family members have some health issues now that I do believe are related to chronic Ativan use. My grandfather hallucinates and is dizzy/prone to falling unless he takes Ativan. Hospital doctors told him he must lower the daily amount, though.
