“We carry the sons you can only hold”……..whoever came up with that thought, that line, BRAVO!!!
It has stayed with me! Profound.
what does that line mean?
@@paulp3992 - women give birth to the babies, men can only carry them in their arms after that.
Has a man who love his child and his wife this line hit deep down my barrel .
Righteous tribute to women past, present, and future. Song writing bringing tears to my eyes. Voices sending chills.
I can’t ever listen to this song without crying. “You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations.”Ugh. So beautiful. Heartbreakingly true.
Same it literally gives me goose bumps and makes me want to take on the patriarchy. I cry every time I listen to it. This, Gods Going to Get You Down, and Restless Daughter are the top three songs to make me tear up.
Savage daughter*
The only war Democrats like is when the US is killing people that look and act like me. Southern and of German heritage. Abraham Lincoln was the first American mass murderer and Woodrow Wilson and FDR followed in his footsteps.
@@donwayne1357 That depends on what you're constituting as "American" 🤔
I thought this was only me. There's no iteration of this song that hasn't made me bawl. It's beautiful, it hits a nerve, and it's what we need.
I thought I’d hate it as highwaymen is one of my all time favourite songs but my god was I wrong....this is brilliant !
Its so good and powerfull my son is listening to it everyday.I love my wife and my son and this song fits perfectly .
It's a really good female interpretation and just as beautiful. Also helped that Jimmy Webb helped craft this.
Some songs you have to leave alone they can sing but this is a screw up JMHO
Same!
Me too. But I cried the first few times I heard it.
Brandi Carlile’s voice is so one-of-a-kind, she is so insanely gifted, truly
Though they’re all amazing this is one of my favorite songs of all time
I love them all but the more I listen to it I tend to agree, she was born with a gift.
First time hearing all of them, but I knew who you mean right away. Rich voice.
@@zoks tremolo vibrato and then next week she has a good ole Zoomer with Hillary Clinton. Gag me.
The blonde I hope you mean, she's got a voice you don't expect.
I have never heard of this band or this song before today, and I am bawling. ❤️ I stand on the shoulders of those who have come before. I can only pray that if my time comes in this way I can carry the boldness and righteousness of those women who have come before. ❤️❤️❤️
There is some real deep magic happening here, I absolutely love this group!
Came to check out the legs in the thumbnail. Left in tears and aching heart. These ladies sang Life here.
I was a Highwoman
And a mother from my youth
For my children I did what I had to do
My family left Honduras when they killed the Sandinistas
We followed a coyote through the dust of Mexico
Every one of them except for me survived
And I am still alive
I was a healer
I was gifted as a girl
I laid hands upon the world
Someone saw me sleeping naked in the noon sun
I heard "witchcraft" in the whispers and I knew my time had come
The bastards hung me at the Salem gallows hill
But I am living still
I was a freedom rider
When we thought the South had won
Virginia in the spring of '61
I sat down on the Greyhound that was bound for Mississippi
My mother asked me if that ride was worth my life
And when the shots rang out I never heard the sound
But I am still around
And I'll take that ride again
And again
And again
And again
And again
I was a preacher
My heart broke for all the world
But teaching was unrighteous for a girl
In the summer I was baptized in the mighty Colorado
In the winter I heard the hounds and I knew I had been found
And in my Savior's name, I laid my weapons down
But I am still around
We are The Highwomen
Singing stories still untold
We carry the sons you can only hold
We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations
It may return to us as tiny drops of rain
But we will still remain
And we'll come back again and again and again
And again and again
We'll come back again and again and again
And again and again
But why from Honduras? Werent the sandinistas in Nikaragua?
Thank you a lot. Spaseba.
"We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations".
The tears of every mother, daughter, grandmother, wife or sweetheart from the time of Adam are running down my face right now.
"Now they're rollin' out the guns again, haroo, haroo; They're rollin oug the guns again, haroo, haroo! They're rollin' out the guns again, *BUT THEY'LL NEVER TAKE OUR SONS AGAIN, They'll never take our sons again, Johnny I swear it to ye!"
There's more talent in this room than the entirety of the TOP 40 country songs chart. Masterpiece cover. Clearly
A cover? Not really. More an extension of the original.
Wrong
@@Smartass_Jedi Listen to the original, and then this one again.
These are the people that makes America beautiful
I seldom am a fan of rewritten lyrics, however this song is just as chilling as the original version. You four have captured the spirit of Willie, Waylon, Kris, and Johnny, yet made it your own.
Actually Jimmy Webb wrote and recorded this before and Glenn Campbell also released this before the Highwaymen did!
see: Weird Al
i know, a totally different context but still
@@amcclery but Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris's version is the most popular, rightly so, and pretty much is the original version.
@@owenanderson589 Not for much longer I feel
@@amcclery The lyrics are different in this version.
I've been listening to music from all genres for nearly 50 years. This is one of the most truly moving and powerful songs. Many Truths are spoken in this song.
Natalie Hemby doesn’t get enough credit. Damn, she’s a singer/songwriting force!!
Yep
She really is the alto power base in everything they do. They're all incredibly talented, but she sets and carries the harmonies flawlessly every time. A 4 part harmony is nearly impossible... unless you have that power base that keeps that tonal quality pristine, and she does it incredibly well!
"We carry the sons you can only hold"
That line is everything. Touched me to my core.
There be theses and dissertations written around that line in time
I'm so glad that someone understands history enough to write intelligent words. The healer accused of witchcraft impressed me the most . Wonderful job!
That touched me too, especially since I’ve been operating a witchcraft website for two decades. Things are getting scary now though. Most days, I feel like hiding my identity until this White Christian Nationalist bullsh*t ends. Trumpsters and Q-Anoners are nuts. They literally want Democrats dead. They can’t see that they’ve been brainwashed into a dangerous cult. Despite the lies they’re being told, Democrats aren’t Socialists, pedos, lizard people, or any of that crap. We are just regular people who want the government to use our tax money to provide resources and benefits to Americans (and yes, immigrants too.) There’s enough to go around if we tax the wealthy. Stop being so selfish, Republicans. And stop HATING everyone who isn’t a white, Christian American. You guys really suck ass right now.
Btw, I adore this song. I cry every single time. Hard to believe, but the lyrics are even better than the original, except the ending of the original… that’s better. 🩷
“I'll fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll come back again, and again
And again and again and again and again
And again”
Sorry for bringing politics into these lovely comments.
Brandi has a voice that transcends any genre she takes on
Dang. Among other things, Brandi is a GREAT dresser 😍
Love the low key contribution of Jason Isbell, popping those strat fills like he didn’t just headline the Opry for 2 weeks. 💙 #teamplayer
I come back to this, often, as it's seldom you find such an ensemble of gifted, storytelling, singers - each one supremely talented and invested in the sentiment of the song. Just lovely.
Brandi Carlile's 'Yeh' at 3.04 just does it for me every time - and Amanda Shires's face is just a picture of pure joy! Love this song so much!
I like this, too
I heard this song for the first time at 6:00 am when I started work ... I turned off the radio and started RUclips and looped this song ... a great day was ....
Every time I hear this song it gets under my skin, I know so many who say: I'm still alive! The voices are so special and touching, thanks for this song 🎼🎶🎤🎶🎻🎶🎸🎶🥁
THIS is the DEFINITION of a SUPERGROUP!!!
Im so glad they did the 3rd verse in 3rd person. Very respectful
Yes.
Ohhhhhh my word.... I’m takin back with the calmness in their voices ❤️
Nice touch to change the freedom rider verse to third person when Maren is singing it.
Agreed. Very respectful.
@@michelle_m_m Gave me chills, very good touch. They understand lyrics and nuance. Love them.
Absolutely. Whilst it breaks the POV throughout the song, in a way the change is stronger for it
Michelle Maloney-Mangold ... “Respectful” was the exact word that I thought of.
My first thought too... Class...
First time I hear this band. Instant big fan! Men don't cry, they say, but I have tears in my eyes!
I play this again and again and again and again
You know it's magic when each member in the group constantly impresses the other ones!
I like country but really old country, the guitar pickers and the such like, Johnny Cash, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed etc. I heard this last night on French RTL radio played by Georges Lang, I listened to the words, very nice. Strange, I live in London, listening to American country on French radio.
It still goes on. Listen to Billy Strings or Molly Tuttle. The kids are alright.
CHILLS, after countless listens.
How am I just learning of this today? Holy cow, y’all are amazing.
My cellist son, my grandson, and I often send each other song links. My son recently sent me this one. I'm thankful he did.
Top level musicians, every one of them.
I've had a kind of awakening this day. I happened across Willy Nelson and the lads doing this song and was so taken with it I've been trawling RUclips for difference versions, and so far this by far the best. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and in the last hour I've learned about Jimmy Webb and history of the song and the different people who have covered it. These lyrics are even more evocative than Jimmy Web's original, but most exciting of all, I have discovered that I love The Highwomen's voices and I had no idea I liked Country & Western!
And..they wrote these lyrics and sent them to Jimmy to see if he was ok w their song…he gave it a thumbs up…great songwriting Brandi and Amanda
We carry the sons you can only hold. The daughters of the silent generation. Now that is strength and that makes me proud to be a woman
I believe if someone was dying on their death bed and these girls gathered around that bed and did this song.... that person would rise up whole and full of life.
This song gives me chills and love brandi's jacket
"you send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations, they may return to us as tiny drops of rain"
Just fantastic!
I wonder if they have any idea how truly amazing they are?
Well, please find a way to tell them, because the comments here demonstrate the struggle women have had and continue to have with small minded, ignorant people.
Omg! I got absolute chills….and tears! Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
How the hell is it that I am just now finding these women!?? Wow! This is badass! Amazing.
This IS US! Our Ancestors! Got me in my feelings crying way to early this A.M.
So beautiful, & hopeful in these difficult times. Thank you.
Stumbled across this group and so glad I did!!! Such unique and beautiful voices
If you haven’t heard them interviewed as to the thoughts that went into forming this band, be sure and look for it.
Wow. I’m speechless I thought I would not like it. Highwayman is my favorite song. But this is amazing.
My favorite song on the Album....amazing!
I bow to all of these extremely talented women. Brandi...OMG. I'm done.
Y'all are amazing! Jason is beast! Great tone and harmonies ! Thank you !
I want them to make more music I'm obsessed with them
Yup. Me too. ❤
To me, this remains one of the most prolific and emotional songs ever. 💔
Both highwaymen and highwomen versions are at the top of my list of all time favorite songs!
One of the most beautiful songs this decade. Amazing.
love the women and the song
Omg... so well done. If you know the original this sounds like the women explaining their pain
, while singing the "exact" same words (pain). You totally shook my world ladies. Just. Like.... fucking wow. This is what magic looks like! Thank you!
And it's what magic sounds like. My son sent me their version of The Chain. I was astonished. I've been listening to their songs on repeat ever since.
I have listened to this so many times that I know for a fact I will never hear it without chills.
And I didn't think this song could get any better. Wow! Gotta deal with those onions now.
Adore this song, and credit to changing the Yola verse to the 3rd person. Maren was so respectful and beautiful. and ofc the whole group were beautiful
Why didn't the change Brandi to the 3rd person RE Lady from Hondoras
Yola is not even a member tho?
My heart really felt this song. So good.
There’s once in the lyrics in this particular song that always seemed to get me. “And in my savior‘s name I laid my weapons down. “
I for some reason get tearful every time I hear this.
The theme of justified vengeance and of truth and good overcoming (even if just spiritually) close-minded hate.
Even with the wolves at the door…
Mine is “the bastards hung me at the Salem gallows hill.” Reminder that they didn’t burn witches they burned women. So chill inducing every time.
Love this song, love this performance
Perfection! Love these ladies!
This song is one of my favorites on Spotify. It's a real pleasure to see them in perform. Their voices blend beautifully!
This sounds great. Love the way you complete each other
These women are outstanding and they have a good band behind them. The guy playing the Fender Stratocaster is really good.
Indeed he is. He kind of has that JJ Cale style where he sits back in the melody and really works it. You have to listen for it to notice it because it's not in your face guitar playing.
That would be the lovely and talented Jason Isbell. He's married to the fiddle player
If you're not being sarcastic (cool if you were), that's Jason Isbell. Multiple grammy winner and perhaps the best songwriter since Dylan. Check him out.
Powerful and beautiful
AMAZING! I wish The Highway would give this some airplay...song of the year-type of song!
I hear it on Outlaw Country- channel 60 everyday. Fawesome.
I need "we carry the sons you can only hold" tattooed on me.
We are the daughters on the silent generation. When i hear that lyric, feels like i'm missing something. have to record that for later.
I missed the chills I got when I first heard highwaymen and the story’s they told. Thank you, as a mother I got the same chills again!
Love the re-rewrite of the third verse. Great job. And GREAT performance
Bravo!!! Much respect for these women. Beautifully done.
I’m blown away.. its wonderful.
Even though I respect the original version, as an early 20's woman, I feel much more attracted to these lyrics than Johnny Cash flying in a starship. But I do love the damn builder, however.
the starship is the future, as this song is also about reincarnation : ) but you probably know. This version is very good indeed, liked it much. Also fan of the original
@@thomasjohansen8152Few things in life gives me more chills than Waylon singing about being a damn builder. However, I feel more connected to the new version, even though I love and respect both.
No that’s where you’re wrong, Cash flying a starship in space in search for other signs of life or another place to call home is as masculine as it gets. Especially since space travel and exploration are becoming more and more of a trend. The possibility of man looking to colonize another planet and find another alternative place to settle in is an amazing concept and one I look forward to witnessing if possible. This current song is just a reiteration of the original one, mostly for female empowerment. Nothing really special about it as far as I can say with all due respect.
This is AWESOME WOW TALK ABOUT TALENT..
4 fantastic singers
I’ve got goosebumps wowwwwww yesssss ladies
I can not stop to listen .So beautiful voices
Look at the talent in one room; it’s like when Optimus prime assembles all the autobots. When Amanda sings though it’s another level. Nobody else comes close
Damn I can't listen to this without crying a little. When art moves me like this, I know it's good. I can't get through Let It Be without the same emotion. Well done Ladies. Bravo!
I mean wow, what a tribute to the to the great ones and also completely original. My life is a little better hearing it
Such beautiful voices and talented artists
Beautiful. Thank you.
Just beautiful sad true and moving. I get chills! Past future and present are all now.
Beautiful music, beautiful arrangement. Pretty Highwomen!
This is so good.
Love this song
They melt me like butter
Loved it!
Love The Highwomen.
Love this song and group. Also very nice guitar work by Mr. Isbell. Greetings from Germany.
Greetings from Orange Beach Alabama my music friend
Incredible, incredible, incredible
Wow! Just wonderful!
when the female wisdom manifests everything changes :)
wow, this gave me chills.
My heart caught in my throat the first time I heard this song; I nearly pulled my car over. STUNNING.
That short blonde had the unique voice. Wow!
Maren morris
Absolutely perfect!!!
Out of all the live performances these ladies have done that I can find on RUclips for this song, this is my favourie. Its a shame they dont seem happy, I love Amanda Shires's husky performance and have started following her great music purely from her contribution on this set. Im based in UK .
Four very beautiful voices 😊😊😊
My love this song!
