LYRICS
I was a Highwoman
And a mother from my youth
For my children I did what I had to do
My family left Honduras when they killed the Sandinistas
We followed a coyote through the dust of Mexico
Every one of them except for me survived
And I am still alive
I was a healer
I was gifted as a girl
I laid hands upon the world
Someone saw me sleeping naked in the noon sun
I heard "witchcraft" in the whispers and I knew my time had come
The bastards hung me at the Salem gallows hill
But I am living still
I was a freedom rider
When we thought the South had won
Virginia in the spring of '61
I sat down on the Greyhound that was bound for Mississippi
My mother asked me if that ride was worth my life
And when the shots rang out I never heard the sound
But I am still around
And I'll take that ride again
And again
And again
And again
And again
I was a preacher
My heart broke for all the world
But teaching was unrighteous for a girl
In the summer I was baptized in the mighty Colorado
In the winter I heard the hounds and I knew I had been found
And in my Savior's name, I laid my weapons down
But I am still around
We are The Highwomen
Singing stories still untold
We carry the sons you can only hold
We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations
It may return to us as tiny drops of rain
But we will still remain
And we'll come back again and again and again
And again and again
We'll come back again and again and again
And again and again
How come I've heard this song 100 times and Yola still made me cry and gave me goosebumps?!?!
Agreed!!!
Me too!!!
I do too. ❤️🌟
🙏🏼❤️
Same!
I cry every freaking time I hear this song. The verse with the Freedom Riders KILLS me...we've come a long ways but still have a so far to go. Someday we will learn to love good people, just for being good people...I hope we learn this before it's too late. Respect and peace to you all
Me as well. I have been sharing this song with women going thru some serious stuff. The freedom rider? Didn't hear a sound....brrrrr
I’m a 6’4 doorman and this song makes me cry every single time so beautiful and so hard hitting.
Every single word of that song is still a punch to the gut, as powerful as the day the album was released. Keeping my fingers crossed for a second album.
yes please drop the second album now!!! so sad i just discovered them now 😢
When I hear this song I think of every woman who nurtured me, gave me strength when I had none and refused to give up on me when I had no faith in myself. This song embodies the strength, courage and power of the woman of the world. I think of my mother who taught remedial kids how to express themselves- a true warrior for the rights of women. I think of my sisters, my wife and my female friends without whom I would quite possibly be an empty shell. Very few songs have touched me like this one. Peace and Love to The Highwomen. Never turn away.
I love that. Thank you for sharing, Jon.
Jon, Grateful for your gratitude & recognition of the importance of women in your own personal life & their impact upon you!
Lead On Brave ☝️ 🙌🏼
❤
I think of the song and group this was based on, and how none of the woman would be anything without the men that built this country, and how neither the man or woman would be anything without the other. Peace and love to the Highwaymen and RIP Waylon and J.R.!

High women are the most important group of women for all the right reasons
24 year old black guy here... this song is awesome and very powerful. Wonderful lyrics
Welcome aboard from a 56 yr old Black man who can't be "figured out" by his sincere love of many genres of music.
@@marcusa.fromthebay7514 Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
68 year old man from ohio… any music that can move you to tears… Needs to Embraced ❤️
This song almost made me drive off the road first time I heard it. It made be sink deep into all kinds of thought, none of which was about driving or the road.
Some kind of muscle memory or subconcious started to take the turn slowly. It snapped me out of it and startled me, and I overcorrected. Went back and forth for a split moment before I could get my bearings. Had I not taken that turn 1000 times before, I'd end up in the ditch.
Nothing violent, nothing dangerous. Lonely road. Might even been able to reverse right back up again.
Never had an accident in my life. I always thought it would be some tight-butt summer-girl that would make me forget to break, but nope. It was a god damn history lesson. Delivered in a way that I had no defense. I was mesmerized.
Maren gives her part to Yola and smiles through her harmonies. Everything she does/sings warms my heart.
Just listened for the gatrillionth time. ❤
I love all the ethnicities in this group all singing Country.
I've had this song on repeat for weeks after just finding it. Still gives me goosebumps and still makes me tear up every now and then. So powerful. And AMAZING vocals 👏👏
Amanda shires lyrics are just the best. She talks to everyone.
No matter how many times I hear this song it still brings tears to my eyes. ❤ such a beautiful powerful song.
Thank you Amanda for forming the Highwomen...what a true supergroup!
bt1569, Amanda took the idea, for the group, to Brandi and the rest is history.
@@sergeantmasson3669 Indeed
Yola. Wow. Her voice and tone just hit different.
All supremely talented but Amanda is just in her own league..massively talented vocalist and instrumentalist
Amanda Shires does this song truely beautiful
Holy hell. I didn’t think this tune could be any better than it once was…I was wrong. Goosebumps. Emotional.
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
Amanda is such a class act. A gifted musician and an incredible lyricist. A few years back I was able to give her a small ratty bundle of flowers at a Jason Isbell concert in Reading, PA around Valentine’s Day. She graciously took them and briefly talked with me from the stage. She could not have been nicer.
We appreciate and support all her activism. She and Jason have brought so much joy into our lives especially since hearing her and Jason sing songs that resonate so much with our family. My daughter suffers from anxiety and depression and a lot of what they write about touches and soothes our souls in dealing with our daughter.
We love Amanda and Jason like family and everyone should see them and the boys in concert at least once.
There is always hope in the world as long as we have Amanda and Jason in it. God keep you always.
I really enjoyed Jason’s interview with George Saunders a few years back and I believe Jason is wrong about one thing. I believe he does have a book to be written. I believe the story of his life, the stories of the road, the story of his demons need to be put to paper.
I hope I live long enough for 2 things. First that Jason will sign my Reunions album so I can complete my collection and second, that I can read Jason’s memoirs.
Miss seeing you Amanda. The Jason concerts have been awesome but we miss seeing that violin stand when we roll in. Have a great 2022
I'm glad to find a kindrid spirit that feels the same way I do about Amanda and Jason. OMg so cool you got to talk to her at a concert!! I love Amanda and Jason so much. I feel like i know them through their songs, hope to get to meet them one day at a concert. Love THe Highwomen and this song is great. I thought the original was great, but this is rewritten for the modern age. I'm taking up fiddle because of Amanda's beautiful playing. I love her albums, her singing and lyrics, they just touch my soul. I alsolove Jason songs especially Anxiety and Running With OUr Eyes Closed.
@@doloreserin The show photographer took a picture of Amanda shaking my hand and talking to me at the edge of the stage after a Jason show outside of NYC. Unfortunately my pumpkin head looks so huge I hate myself.
She is genuinely an amazing person
We were helped by some Irish insiders to the concert door for Jason’s show in Dublin. It was our anniversary and we chose Dublin to specifically spend the day with Jason. Finally Jason exited the door and a group of about 12 of us corralled him. He took photos and signed for everyone. Finally at our turn he took a picture with both my wife and I and signed the set list I got. I was talking a mile and minute and told him we came on our anniversary. Jason never says much and he heard my rambling without saying anything. After he finished with us and was signing another he looked up at me and said “happy anniversary “. Something we will always treasure.
Sadly like 2 dumb asses, we think Jason actually walked to his hotel (will never happen now) and he was staying at our hotel. Had we stayed until he was finished we could have walked back together. It was only a 5-10 minute walk BUT it would have been awesome.
We’ve been married 34 years and I think if my wife ever left me it would be for Jason. Honestly he’s so amazing I would have to approve.
These days it’s nearly impossible to meet him. 2 idiots in NYC stalked him to sell signed albums on eBay so I think that has ruined it for the average fan.
I hope you meet him someday as well. He was so kind and genuine. Truly nice and respectful. I wish we knew people who knew people because we would love to tell him how much he is woven into our lives.
We just bought ridiculously priced front row seats for the upcoming show in LA for my wife’s birthday. I’m dealing with some major health issues and not sure about the future. I definitely can’t do a standing venue. My wife loves him so much and I don’t want to disappoint her so I’m trying to hit the seated venues so she gets her Jason fill.
It would be cool to attend a show with you. There are several people we met at shows who we attend shows with. Stay in touch if you’d like. I can give you updates about experiences.
So glad you are a fan of the both of them
These lyrics and the amazing talents ..THIS SONG MEANS SO MUCH MORE THAN FOR THE MOVEMENT THAT IT WAS MADE FOR .☮️💜THIS SONG IS FOR ALL THE ONES BEFORE US , ALL OF US HERE NOW & FOR THE ONES AFTER US ...TRAILBLAZING THROUGH LIVES & SPIRITS THAT WILL FOREVER REMEMBERED ☮️💜 💜☮️🎵🎶💜☮️🎵🎶 MsL = MUSIC SAVES LIVES ☮️💜
This is just ridiculously good. Ahead even on their other versions of it.
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
That's a lot of talent on that stage right there.. love it! 🎶
You stole my line.
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
I wish that Marin had a verse she could sing when someone guests, like this.
Perhaps, “ I was a teacher, teaching kids to read and write. Sharing love and light. Late one morning, a gunman burst into the classroom, I tried to save them, doing everything I could. They say I died, saving three with my body, but I’m not gone for good.”
Wow..beautiful..l hope she hears these beautiful lyrics..thank you for sharing..
I think she is fine with just singing backup.
Yola's verse has me shaking it's so powerful and painfully beautiful.
Jason Isbell on guitar. ❤️
All these comments give me hope that compassion and empathy exist
Amanda's voice has serious Dolly vibes.
Bluegrassy
Amanda Shires is why this group was formed in the first place. It was her idea.
Bless these women... Thank you for your gift.
And the gifts of those before them
Incredibly Powerful. Yeah, you made this man choke back tears. Amazing.
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting

Seriously, there needs to be a song part 2. This is so amazing! So beautiful.
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
Technically this is part 2 as part 1 was with The Highwaymen
The original is one of my favourite songs ever. Esp. seeing how much fun the Highwaymen had performing together.
Have to say this is even better. An hommage and a very original piece of art at the same time. Outstanding.
they need to do a 2nd Album
While practicing songs with chords here, relearning where all my fingers go for chords 50 years after I stopped playing guitar. Life, children, work ,children, work, grandchildren, health. All this things seemed more important than playing my guitar. While looking for more songs I came across these very talented women. I think I'm inspired even more. This is a beautiful version of the song sang by the Highway Man. I like this more than the original. Now, for the next item on my bucket list. Piano, another instrument that got put by the wayside while living life. So many things I want to concur before time takes it's toll.
Time gives freely of itself to those who ask....
Damn, Isbell sounds like he’s channeling Knopfler.
A tear slowly develops and then traverses my cheek
Woman Super Group. What a magical sound they have. Their first and only album is extraordinary.
What talented, beautiful, women.
Love what each brings to the stage.
YOLA is the SOUL in this band.
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. How are you?
I’m not sure Yola is even part of the band. Just kind of a frequent guest.
This has been one of the best bands to be formed in a very long time. Yola adds a nice touch as well
Lump in my throat and tears in my eyes from the warrior women before me.
🌻the song is just a few minutes in and I’m totally sobbing (almost hysterically sobbing..sigh) ….. musta been there back in the day …. glad we are here and now …. 💙 VOTE BLUE 💙💙= 💙 VOTE WOMEN’S RIGHTS = 💙VOTE BLUE = TEACHERS 💙🙏💙
Beautiful ladies and so talented.
We are the daughters of a silent generation... best lyric in the song.
Amanda's voice is haunting and incredibly amazing.
Wonderful. If you haven't heard their cover of The Chain, please do. Chillbumps !!!
Thank you once again am very happy to have you as my best fans hope you will like to follow up on my group where you get to know more about my music show and ongoing meeting
Sheesh , the lord outdid himself when he made Amanda . She is so beautiful and elegant.
I just heard this for the first time tonight! An interview with Amanda Shires. Yes, goosebumps and makes me want to cry.
I think i might be in love with Yola ..lol.. she's definitely beautiful and amazingly talented
Amanda Shires has a awesome voice🥇🤙🤙🤙
She has an unforgettable and unique voice the same as Dolly, Reba and Jennifer Nettles. you can hear each of their voices, in know instantly who they are.
I rarely cry over music but damn this one got me!
Oh my God i i live so close to her concert at Interlochen..the tickets r outrageous for 1 price $380..r u kidding me
What a band!!
Obsessed with these words...and the entire performance...including Jason Isbell 😍💕💖
Gawd bless, I freaking love y’all. Fan from moment #1. The Highwaymen would be proud of this harmony.
well now speaking of true REAL honest good music!
Great song and performance by all of The Highwomen. Love your dress, Amanda!
unless you are a gay man.....how could you not look......I read she had reduction surgery...not sure if this is before or after that.....she looks like a wonderful person....I read her bio
@@greghammer5321 FALSE.
👏👏👏 you guys are amazing!! So glad to see a female band in such a male dominated industry
This is a gift
I am pretty sure that is Jason Isbell in the background playing guitar fills on a Strat. If I am a right, it just makes my heart swell to se this amazingly talented man to stand back while his wife takes her turn in the spotlight.
It absolutely is. I saw Jason with Amanda and the 400 unit at Red Rocks in 2019, just before the pandemic. Best show I have ever seen. Check out a version of her 'Wasted and Rollin' with him on guitar.
I have loved the Highwaymen‘s version for years, but this one always give me shivers, goosebumps and even tears. What a band of highly gifted and talented women presenting a very different female perspective. I am so grateful to my daughter who introduced the Highwomen to her boomer father. After viewing all the other versions here on YT over and over again and, of course, to the album version I really think this one is the best. Unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the pond hoping for a European Tour, although it doesn‘t look very likely to happen.
This version has no business being so good and powerful. It gives me chills and I hold my tears. Four stories of strugle and bravery told with elegance and gentleness of true women, and without harshness of modern feminism.
Goosebumps!!!!!!
Absolutely love this song. Strength and tears
I saw Brandi in Wichita Ks. She opened for Jonny Lang. Never heard of her, but, after hearing her, I KNEW it wouldn't be the last time I'd see or hear from her again. What a talent. Amanda....Bless her heart.
Much like Sierra Ferrell now. A superstar on the rise.
Wow. Simply…. Wow
Magic women round the world.
Powerful
Amanda Shires you are amazing! I love you girl! ❤
Excellent in every way
Wow!!!
No one has a better voice than Amanda Shires
Eric Diekmann, Amanda's voice has a haunting aspect to it.
100% agree! Maren is out of her depth though
absolutely FANTASTIC 🤯
Great ,great ,great !!!!
This Is A Great Band And Great Remake Of The Classic. I Hope Someday I Can Become A Highwomen
Wow this is incredible
This performance brings tears to my eyes, and I don't cry easily. Listened to The Highwayman before this, with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. That is a great, beautiful song, but this version gave me a much stronger emotional reaction. My favorite line is "In my saviors name, I layed my weapons down." I'm not even religious.
Wish I could ❤️ this 1000X
I love you all so much for doing this! You are all so talented, powerful and inspiring! 🥰👋👋👋👋
I am a rock fan but I love this group and so far every song I have heard from them.
@@dskebo me too! But these women are just amazing!
Love it! Can never get too much High Women. 👏🎶🎙💕 And Jason Isbell was the perfect addition.
I just recently came across this song & your group. Absolutely beautiful, gives me chills.
I must have been under a rock because I just stumbled on "The Highwomen"! Luv Ya'll and Ya'll sound great!!! Would love to see more Vids!
I was also a late bloomer (fan) Maybe ! year ago ........
I love this collective of brilliant talent thank you Women💚💜🤍❤️🙏
I'm late to this party! Covered in goose bumps, smiling, singing while I do the dishes!!...now I'm never gonna leave. I too, am still around! 🥳
I love this song so much, as well as the original. Brandi Carlile is obviously a musical genius. I’m assuming she put this together. What’s interesting to me is that the majority of people singing, playing, and listening to this song are Christians who don’t believe in reincarnation. But that’s what this song is about. I definitely believe in reincarnation, so it has a lot of meaning for me. Thank you, Brandi, for introducing this song to a new generation. The lyrics are even more emotional than the original. 🩷
P.S. Amanda Shires is also credited as a writer. Beautiful work, women. 💚
I don't know if it is about reincarnation specifically. It could very well be read as lives of women across time and space share a common through-line. The spirit of powerful, defiant women endures even after one life ends through the sisterhood.
Phenomenal!!
Awesome!
Belle prestation merci à vous,,,,que de souvenirs,♧
Allemensen wat mooi!
I love this song
Every artist who has recorded a song with the same name as their band, that is invariably their best song - discuss! Definitely true with this lot. Bad Company, Black Sabbath, I could go on.
Anyway, this is great 👍
Absolutely love this!!!
The song gives me chills each time I hear it! You are all wonderful!!❤️❤️
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. How are you?
I love woman come back as often as you can
Thank god for friends and family
So gorgeous. I'd love to hear a version of American Remains, pleeeeeeaase
