@@BEASTMODEJR-xf5ky The song is beautiful - written by Jimmy Webb. He also wrote Up, Up and Away, done by the 5th Dimension. Super song writer. As beautiful as the song is - I think the magic of this performace is this performance. The four powerhouse stars. The dancing other-worldly nature of the guitars. Everything about this video/recording is ethereal and a work of art.
Well, it isn't a "country" song, per se. Written by Jimmy Webb, it just happened to be a hit by these super legends. He wrote other hit songs for other artists. One example of a totally not country sound, was Up Up and Away by the Fifth Dimension from the late 60's.
this is one of the best song ever written/composed/performed.... all of these guys are legends... but every time Cash sings his part...goosebumps galore!!!
A timeless classic performed by four timeless entertainers! Thank you Johnny, Waylon, Willie, and Kris for all the great music! God bless Country music!
"I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below"... this line cuts me deep as I relate this to my father's passing away. The wet concrete below meaning the afterlife. I love you Captain Raymond Lambert. 💙
It's impressive to me that a country song can be about armed banditry, sailing, large-scale construction projects, interstellar space travel and reincarnation.
It was the 70's. The age of free love (and drugs) hadn't quite faded yet, and so you had some very unique ballads coming up in that time. You couldn't even say the 70's was anything in particular musically. There were soooo many good tunes coming from everywhere back then, that whole decade was swimming in gold and this was a part of that. It often felt like it was time to toss the old rules out of what couldn't be done and just go with the flow. These Boys were among those who helped revitalize country in a way no one had thought possible, and we'll all love them for it forever.
Not originally a country song. Written and first recorded by Jimmy Webb, produced by George Martin in 1977. Much more pop and orchestral. Webb was a friend of Waylon Jennings who recorded several of his songs including “MacArthur Park.”
@@tonkaGuy888 You aren't wrong, but for me the point is that country embraced the song and made it their own by implementing a country feel and beat. The lyrics being what they are were still embraced by country, which involves the song into the canon of country music. So the original comment can still be applicable. If country stars had said, "Hey this thematic content isn't country and we don't want to do it" then it wouldn't be a country music song. But it is because Webb's inspired lyrics inspired these stars as well.
I'm a 48 year old metal head who came across this song when I was hooked on drugs and lost. I felt this song and these men's spirits. I am clean and sober now and so glad I have this song and these men in my life. That's all God bless
Clicking on this little 3 minute video out of nothing but curiosity with no context of the highwaymen, has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I just keep this song on repeat…again, and again, and again, and again, and again
Six decades of Rock & Roll and now at 71, I finally am listening to the real music masters. Boy, did I miss a lot! This proves that God teaches us until we're ready to return back from whence we came!
As I just said here, I can never listen to this Song without crying of joy. It is the most uplifting Song ever written. It gives hope through the hardest of times, because it reminds us that we will ALWAYS be reborn again and again and again and again ad infinitum. ❤😂😊
Four friends having fun on stage, while pretty much giving perfect performance backed by perhaps one the best set of musicians keeping everything tight and not missing a beat. The music is beautiful, but the effort gone into putting this out must have been immense.
Such an incredible group of talent. I love the way Willie is slightly behind the beat, just furthers the raw feel of this performance. The Tele lead playing on this is stellar as well
The guitarist in the backing musicians is so good and sounds so melodic.... Not a big fan of country music but I am obsessed with this, maybe I am converted
Country of new is about cookie cutter romance, beer and trucks. Country of old not only is much better but there's many gems that transcend time and genre
I had a buddy in the Air Force who died a couple years back. After his funeral I walked outside and felt a single drop of rain fall on my forehead. Funny thing was he LOVED this song. Everytime i hear Cash's part I start to tear up
One drop of rain that fell on your forehead could have been your friend's last touch and greeting. I sincerely believe that the soul is indestructible and can be transformed into many forms and present itself to people in our world in many different ways.
I have been privileged to be alive at the same time as these men. The lyrics to this song never fail to move me. Jimmy Webb, the writer of these lyrics, captured the essence of what humans are. While diverse we still have much more in common than not. While unique, we are but one of the many and time repeats. I'm Still alive.
Hank Williams, Patsy Kline... Add these two legends! Country music ain't what it used to be, except for these four Willy, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris. God Bless them!
When you listen to this epic performance remember the great solo and backup guitarist in this video, Reggie Young 1936-2019. His guitar picks made this and many other songs legendary.

I was a highwayman, along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his life blood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive
I was a sailor, I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner 'round the horn to Mexico
I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off, they said that I got killed
But I am living still
I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that gray tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
I'll always be around and around and around
And around and around and around
I'll fly a star ship across the universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again and again and again
And again and again and again

How can this masterpiece not send chills down your spine????!!!!! I'm not a huge country fan, but even this song had me shivering
Because it’s the Mount Rushmore of country singers
Well...it actually DID send chills, so I don't really have an answer to your question. LOL
@RD H Remember, it's Jimmy Webb's lyrics. And Johnny's interpretation of them.
this is one of the best song ever written/composed/performed.... all of these guys are legends... but every time Cash sings his part...goosebumps galore!!!
Johnny Cash's voice was one-of-a-kind, a gift.
@Nes Ally I have one very close..you need to have suffered a lot and have natural deep voice..and get the notes right of course
True American hero. Flaws and all just like all of us👍💪
Goosebumps from Australia
Same here
A timeless classic performed by four timeless entertainers! Thank you Johnny, Waylon, Willie, and Kris for all the great music! God bless Country music!
I would consider this country folk-rock music before country.
God has and is and will forever bless this music born out of the necessity of goodness.
❤
@@michaelheath2866 The song was released in 1985.
Michael Heath I don’t think they were doing drugs bud 😝
Best super group of all time and I would give the world to be able to see them play live R.I.P. gentlemen you are sorely missed
At least Willie ain't dead
Phoenix Flores Kris Kristofferson isn’t dead
........Yet
MARS MABILIS DREW BILLI QUICK QuICK True, he’s like 83, but he still sounds amazing, all of them will and have performed until the very end
The Dirty Mac is a good super group. (John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell.)
Every single one of these men are (were) incredible. Hail to the fallen.
Kris and Willy are still here 😊
@@torianholt2752 I know, hense the bracketing.
@@torianholt2752 not anymore :( rip kris
Kris RIP. Thank you for all your amazing songwriting.
Are you kidding me, absolutely legendary. This piece of art will age like a fine wine, a true classic. Speechless. 🙏🇺🇸❤️🔥😎
I'm a 48 year old metal head who came across this song when I was hooked on drugs and lost. I felt this song and these men's spirits. I am clean and sober now and so glad I have this song and these men in my life. That's all
God bless
❤️
God bless you!
Hang in there,it gets better.
Celebrating my 28th year of sobriety.
Life is good.
Like the line at 1:11 :) hang in there m8
Amazing!!! God Bless You Brother!
God bless you
32 years and still one of the greatest live songs!
Such depths in the words of these country music legends... makes current lyrics seem facile:thank you Kriss... you'll always be around..
Johnny's verse always brings a tear to my eye.
Did he come back as Captain Kirk?
I'm Brazilian, but I'm really enchanted with this American music. Congratulations to these legends of world music!
A masterpiece. We will never experience music like it again
Loved this group then and still love them now- played this on repeat today. God bless you Kris.
Love these guys. That whole concert was amazing, wish I could have been there. Still watching December 2022.
This song has everything for me, amazing instrumentals & guitar accents, poetic meaning, genuine soul in the voice, a masterpiece.
Alfred Noyles poet
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is a masterpiece!
Do you like fish sticks?
What are you a gay fish?
It's like a 5 minute opiate.
This is good song
SO...........What is the difference between a Fish Fart and a Bass Turd? I'm sure you get the joke.
Was just listening to this earlier today. Rest In Pecae Kris 😢
"i'll always be around. and around. and around". these legends will be forever in our hearts. "again and again and again".
Still makes my eyes water. Not so much for the song, but for the men who sing it. Thank you, even though they cannot see or hear.
Clicking on this little 3 minute video out of nothing but curiosity with no context of the highwaymen, has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I just keep this song on repeat…again, and again, and again, and again, and again
Every song is a banger
I knew each of them separately except of Kriss, when i found out about the highwaymen i dedicated to learn almost every song.
I can't decide whom amongst them delivered the best, they are all too impressive.. Pure art.. 2024..
Six decades of Rock & Roll and now at 71, I finally am listening to the real music masters. Boy, did I miss a lot! This proves that God teaches us until we're ready to return back from whence we came!
This song is one of those rare ones that puts tingles in my soul. It’s so beautiful and the lyrics paint vivid imagery in my mind.
As I just said here, I can never listen to this Song without crying of joy. It is the most uplifting Song ever written. It gives hope through the hardest of times, because it reminds us that we will ALWAYS be reborn again and again and again and again ad infinitum. ❤😂😊
Praise the Lord there is a heaven. And if you accept the Lord as your savior one day He will take you there.
@@Linda_elixorYes. I cry every time also. It speaks to the soul in a way that few other songs have ever done. ❤
Masterpiece. Possibly the coolest song ever written.

For some reason this whole divine congregation on the stage singing this beautiful song spiritually lifts me up !
Check out the meaning it’s about a man that reincarnates four different times as different people. I thought that was interesting
Four friends having fun on stage, while pretty much giving perfect performance backed by perhaps one the best set of musicians keeping everything tight and not missing a beat. The music is beautiful, but the effort gone into putting this out must have been immense.
We lost Kris. Rest well, Highwayman ;(
The best is still going
@eddieroyal870hes amazing1
@@eddieroyal8701 yeah right, Don't think so
@@johnrogers8255 I just saw Willie 2 months ago, he still kickin ass
GOD Bless!
just unbelievable in every direction. the songwriting, playing, and singing voices. Immaculate and perfect. I love this song so FUCKING much
Such an incredible group of talent. I love the way Willie is slightly behind the beat, just furthers the raw feel of this performance. The Tele lead playing on this is stellar as well
The irony is, Glen Campbell is the most talented of all of them, and his version is better
Willie was always off beat. It is what made him Willie.
Just found this today. It's been on replay all day. This song is a spiritual experience.
same dude
hooked on the band now haha
@@pero1411 Amazing band indeed. Cheers.
whoever did the sound at this concert is a legend
The guitarist in the backing musicians is so good and sounds so melodic.... Not a big fan of country music but I am obsessed with this, maybe I am converted
Country of new is about cookie cutter romance, beer and trucks.
Country of old not only is much better but there's many gems that transcend time and genre
I had a buddy in the Air Force who died a couple years back. After his funeral I walked outside and felt a single drop of rain fall on my forehead. Funny thing was he LOVED this song. Everytime i hear Cash's part I start to tear up
Rest in peace to your friend
One drop of rain that fell on your forehead could have been your friend's last touch and greeting. I sincerely believe that the soul is indestructible and can be transformed into many forms and present itself to people in our world in many different ways.
Greetings from Poland 🙏🙏🙏
I have been privileged to be alive at the same time as these men. The lyrics to this song never fail to move me. Jimmy Webb, the writer of these lyrics, captured the essence of what humans are. While diverse we still have much more in common than not. While unique, we are but one of the many and time repeats.
I'm Still alive.
Its 2024 and the legend is still alive. Thank Lord for saving him. God bless you willie!! ❤❤
И Джонни и Крис
A three minute masterpiece. Credit is overdue to Reggie Young, the guy playing the electric guitar; his harmonies I hear again and again and again.
Exactly
Shoutout to him from cash in "ghost riders in the sky"
Thank you for the comment because I never could figure out who was playing so brilliantly.
Brutal!!
Thanks for mentioning his name, I was wondering about it
After 35 years of hearing this song, I can still listen to it for hours at a time. Not many great country singers around anymore.
I actually heard the song in GTAV 2021 and fell in love with it
Hank Williams, Patsy Kline... Add these two legends! Country music ain't what it used to be, except for these four Willy, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris. God Bless them!
You are absolutely right
@@veritas41photo Yep, Hank is my all time favorite.
@@veritas41photoThere are, just not on radio. Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Jason Isbell, just to name a few.
The politeness of the audience was conclusive proof that they knew that what they were experiencing was something they would never again experience.
They all give me chills, music like this is one of a kind and I don’t know if we will ever see it again .
When you listen to this epic performance remember the great solo and backup guitarist in this video, Reggie Young 1936-2019. His guitar picks made this and many other songs legendary.
i noticed him !!! thought he sounded great !
Is Willie the only one left then? I loved Johnny Cash as a kid! Boy named Sue got me...lol.
@@kilodeltawhisky1504 Kris is still around. By the way, if you want to know the roots of country music, look for Hank Williams. But, understand that there are black influences and also a lot of Irish music in this. Check also Dolly Parton. A goddess.
glad to know his name. i don't know much about country music, but this performance always stuck with me, and the beautiful guitar work always felt like a 5th lead among the legends.
Reggae Young fantastic!!!! Best Regards from Germany....
Something about this song ... it starts normally, but then you get "... but I am still alive" and it just moves to a higher level.
Kris passed today. Rest easy poet. You'll be missed. 🙏❤️🙏
Amongst thousands of country musics of the entire world I heard, this one has an extremely place. Like no one, this touches one's soul
Now I understand why my grandfather liked country music. R.I.P Manuel
yeah, old country music is FAR superior to the crap from the last 30 years
