- HighWomen (Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris and Natalie Hemby) with Sheryl Crow, and Yola perform “Highwoman” Live at Newport Folk Festival, July 27, 2019. "Highwoman" is a 2019 version of the song "Highwayman".
"Highwayman" was written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb in 1977. According to Wikipedia, the original version is "about a soul with incarnations in four different places in time and history: as a highwayman, a sailor, a construction worker on the Hoover Dam, and finally as a captain of a starship. The song was influenced by the real-life hanged highwayman Jonathan Wild. The dam builder verse alludes to the deaths of over one hundred men during the construction of Hoover Dam near Boulder City, Nevada. Jimmy Webb first recorded the song on his 1977 album "El Mirage". The following year, Glen Campbell recorded his version, which was released on his 1979 album "Highwayman". In 1985, the song became the inspiration for the naming of the supergroup the Highwaymen, which featured Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Their first album, "Highwayman", became a number one platinum-selling album, and their version of the song went to number one on the Hot Country Songs Billboard chart in a 20-week run."
The Highwaymen's version of "Highwayman" earned Webb a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1986. It also earned the Highwaymen (the band -- Waylon, Johnny, Willie and Kris) the award for Single of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 1985.
If you are interested in listening to the original version of this song, "Highwayman" , written by Jimmy Webb in 1977, I filmed Jimmy performing it live in April of 2019 : • Jimmy Webb “Highwayman... Видеоклипы
Hey To My abusers and to all those hypocrites when I was a child ,I am still alive and thriving and happiness surrounds me .Stories still untold I am a high woman
"My mother asked me if that ride was worth my life."
I'm not crying, you're crying.
It's the onions, right? Someone's cutting onions.
Beautiful
That hit hard
You're damn skippy it was...we are the daughters of the silent generation...then we stood up..still standing
Nailed it. That line Broke me.
Brandi Carlile is a goddamn national treasure
AGREE!
Brandi Carlile is a God Damn national Treasure!!!! I am an old hippie kinda gal and this chick is the best female singer to come along in a very long time!!!! They can play that pop shit on the radio til no one remembers or cares anymore!! But Brandi, Sheryl and these ladies will leave their mark on "Outlaw Country"fans forever!!!! Love you Brandi you little bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She opened for the tribute to Johnny Cash and she killed it!!!!!!! Loved you since that concert!!! Sheryl was there too!!!! You ladies are all beautiful and talented!!!!! Keep singing and keeping the music real!!!!!!!!!✌️🎶😎💙
So fuckin' true.
I remember seeing her live the first time. She was opening for the Indigo Girls at the time, the PA broke, and she fill the venue with nothing but her voice. Total Bad Ass.
You don't have to swear to say that.
They're all great but Yola kills it.
Gave me goosebumps
Hell yeah, had to listen to it since you reminded me of it. Social media does good things every now and then. Yola Killin it. Just wish it was longer haha. It's different from the original in allot of ways. Should make it longer too haha. You have a good one
Was she the one in the bike shorts?
@@paulryan2128 no that's Amanda shires. Jason isbels wife. Yola is the black woman.
@@davegordon6943 ok ... ty!
"We are the daughters of the silent generations...You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations."

Somehow, this song broke my heart and healed it at the same time. amazing!
Beautifully expressed, Diego. Thank you for viewing.
mine too...at the same time. huge emotions
Yes indeed Nov2022k
It's a reasonable response.
" I was a healer. I was gifted as a girl. I laid hands across the world." CHILLS. This whole moment is a VIBE. Thanks ladies.
SOOOOO GOOD!!!! THANK YOU Highwomen for this song! All these women are amazing and this message is SO BIG!!
@@jlwrigh3”Highwayman” was written by a man. “Highwoman” was (re)written by band members Amanda and Brandi, both women.
She may look like a gypsy hooker, but damn can she play a fiddle.
Not a fan of country music but I could listen to this all day.
“We carry the sons you can only hold”
Such a powerful line.
Johnny and Waylon are looking down from heaven saying thank you for carrying on the tradition. Beautiful song that reflects everyone.
Kris, Willie, Cash, and Waylon would all be proud. These women killed it, and if you're among the 103 (or more depending on when you read this) that dislike this, then you don't like real country music. These aren't just great female country stars. They're great country stars period!
I would go as far as to say that if you don't like this, then you don't like music. Great song delivered by great musicians.
They surely did
The highwaymen would approve of this version for sure.RIP to the MAN IN BLACK
I may be responsible for at least 300,000 of these views. Yola's voice, and verse, bring me to tears. This song is absolutely incredible.
Christopher Michaud the view count is unique to iOS, so yours likely only counts as one view. I am thrilled that you love this video so much- these artists are absolutely amazing. Thank you, thank you for watching.
You just know Waylon and Johnny would have loved this.
You bet!
That's the truth!
They are listening as we are..
Would love for someone to interview Jimmy Webb about this. I imagine he loves it.
d. belew He helped write this version too!
I love how happy Sheryl Crow is and how much sisterhood there is on that stage. The whole song has had me captivated and in tears since first hearing it, by chance.
Jane Wrin, me too..just found them.
Same. I discovered this song on tiktok, and I'm obsessed. Added it to my spotify right away.Yola's part and the line sent to die on foreign soil
makes me cry.
Music hasnt touched me like this in a long long time.
That's what I call real music
I discovered Yola at a Kacey Musgraves concert last month and now I woke up to Brandi with her Grammy performance and the Highwomen. Two fantastic voices that I put up their with my favorite Bonnie Raitt
It wasn't the song I wanted, but was the song I needed.
PLEASE, stay together, do some more. The USA, the world needs you.
I cry every time I hear this damn song. “You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations.” Tears my old ass up. Damn. Brava Ladies.
Amanda Shires whole persona is a full mood. What a work of art, love them all
Kaleb Chancellor right? Damn, so intriguing...a talented woman.
And that persona is her.
This black girl has a great voice , its the first time i have heard her or this band
Look at Sheryl crow, so beautiful.
❤
Natalie Hemby doesn’t get enough praise. She’s a great singer and also a songwriter
I agree. Her part is what sticks in my head.
I don't know how I ended up watching the Highwaymen performing live in 1990 - and was so moved by their performance then saw the HighWomen and thought was this PC or what. Got about one minute into the song and tears are funning down my face. I was not prepared for the emotion and the strength in the lyrics or the performances of these sisters in harmony. And will listen to this song again, and again, and again, and again...........
Their performance is breathtaking. I would love to see a movie based on this version of the song!
These lyrics are off.the.chart good.
Like For Amanda Shires !!!! ohhhhhh, Jason Isbell is present!!!
"And everyone except for me survived". As a man I recognize my mother here. She went trough hell for us with our abusive ex father untill they divorced. One night when he was drunk and we all had to sleep in the same room, us in the bed and her on a chair with the head on the table she told us how it was not that bad . It was bad, but she is just amazing :). She would have died for us. Mothers are so strong man. Now are life is much better, it's been 30 years and the idiot father is long gone but some things i will never forget.
2 years and still gives me goosebumps. Bravo.
I love this song. It is SO POWERFUL.
I have such a weakness for all of their voices individually,, put together I’m sobbing
When I saw your band name and misread it as Highwaywomen, I wondered where your cover of “Highwayman” was, but YT kept showing me “The Chain” (they obviously know I’m into Stevie/FM). FINALLY, TODAY, I saw this! It’s fantastic. I bawled the whole way through and watched three separate performances (still crying). This is genius, ladies. So incredibly touching and beautiful. 💗 And it’s especially important today, as the religious nuts in our country have revoked women’s right to an abortion. Abortion saved my life and allowed me to escape a much older, abusive man when I was a teenager. It’s so important for girls and women to have a choice.
I love love LOVE this song and every verse. Yola always gives me chills
All of these women are more than talented, and every one deserves all the praise. But Brandi Carlile. On a n o t h e r LEVEL.
The whole song is incredibly powerful, Yola is a force to be reckoned with! Beautiful ladies! Thank you Brandi, you are a genius!
Yola should be part of Highwomen
This song is so emotional 😩😍 my eyes fill up every time Yola sings “and when the shots rang out I never heard that song” 😩😩
Never heard the sound... But either way is just as good!! ❤️
Same!! Chills and tears.
In all of this talent Jason Isbell is in the back on guitar. Outstanding.
I stumbled across this song last night... It put chill bumps all over my body and brought tears streaming down my face. I immediately Loved this song and have listened to it literally all night...it's mid-morning and i am still listening... the words cut through like a knife... a beautiful masterpiece
I am a 57 year old, heterosexual male, father of 3 grown men, married to my beautiful wife for going on 30 years ... and it did the same damn thing to me.
Same!!!
The talent and genius and artistry and passion on this stage cannot be measured or accurately described. LOVE!
And I'll take that ride again and again and again,,My God her voice and that line has me sobbing. This is so uplifting and yet so very sad,
Amanda Shires voice is amazingly haunting.
brilliant
I tear up every time I hear this song. Thank God for every woman that contributed with all they had to what we have now.
Sometimes I come back to this video just for comfort.
Me too❤️
These ladies are so great. Amanda Shires for the win!!
She is amazing her voice gives me chills 😵😀
God Bless These Amazing Talents! They have blessed us. WOW!
I really can picture Johnny smiling from heaven looking at this.
Beautiful song. Telling the story of the powerful spirit of women is everything
Yola is everything in this song
I am guessing Willie, Kris and Jimmy Webb all gave this a thumbs up.
My heavens, that was one powerful performance!
Wow. Once saw Yola in Helsinki then saw this posted in some friend's page from Newport FF, i went to college in Rhode island, so I'm well acquainted with that festival. But what a performance. Hope they join up and do it again.
... and Brandi Carlile so sweetly smiled at her buddy inviting her to sing her part. That's sharing... a part of a team. 20201107 (Saturday).
Highwayman has always been one of my favorite songs. Love seeing these women doing their own version. ❤️
So...I love fusion. So...why am I getting all weepy? Yeh...it's all about that music-soul connection. Awesome.
One word…. YOLA
I'm not crying cuz this is badass. You're crying cuz this is badass. Women are making country great again.
all these women voices are so colourful. love it.
Thank you for taking this video, it's literally one of my favorites of all time, I've watched it dozens of times
Thank you so much, Brett🎶🌈It makes me so happy that you enjoy it so much.
The gal with the violin-her voice is sublime.
Amanda Shires 😊
"You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations. They return to us as tiny drops of rain. We will still remain."
What a deeply poignant line.
As a Proud daughter, DIL, grand daughter, sister, SIL, niece, great niece, and friend of many honorable soldiers, also as a mother of two, the line gets me Ev-er-y time ❤🪖💔
Also, the line, "We carry the sons you can only hold." 💗
This is an amazing piece of art, filled with so much that cuts straight through to a woman's soul. Makes you want to straighten your crown a bit, doesn't it ladies.
❤👸🦸♀️🏋♀️🧘♀️👩👦❤
Beautifully said, Tara ❤️
Been watching Jason and Amanda's live stream during self isolation and she sang this. Great song.
D A M N -- Please, more of this!!!
this has to be top 5 best remakes ever - trounces the original by the HighwayMen. Meaningful lyrics, well orchestrated harmonization, etc. etc. = GENIUS!
I have heard this amazing song probably close to a million times so far on the album, but watching them preform it is a whole new level and bringing me to tears!!

I love the violinist voice! They're all good, but she's my number one.
That’s Amanda Shires!😊
@@AmyKaribian thank you. I watched a video on the third girl from the left and she's a pretty amazing person. I'm going to start checking these girls out. So far I'm really impressed. Maybe they'll be my first ever concert that I will go too. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but I never went to a concert my whole life. Sad, but true. 🙄
I think that is great, that this performance is inspiring you to support and see live music. The whole purpose of these video is to inspire viewers to support our artists, so thank you for doing so. The third artist from the left is Yola, and she is wonderful. I have many Yola videos on my channel. I hope you will check them out and enjoy. Stay in touch and let me know when you see your first concert! I’d love to hear all about it.
Amy Karibian very sweet reply 👍
I love the POWER of this.
Absolutely beautiful song ❤️🎶✌️
I love how they threw Yola in there! It added a nice touch! Love them all
Yola's on the studio version, so not just thrown in there! Maren Morris does a nice version of that verse too, but Yola really adds to it indeed.
Wow, this blows me off of my feet. Powerful women, powerful music. I wish we had performances like that over here in old Europe.
Pretty incredible. Words fail me. Just listening to this on repeat.
Beautiful ❤
