First time i saw and heard Brandi was in Glasgow around 2009, she was supporting Newton Faulkner. I had never heard of her. I arrived early stood about 6ft from a very low stage, out she came with a smile, totally relaxed, and started her set with Late Morning Lullaby. I still remember the goosebumps, as i stood there in complete awe, and i have seen many many bands and artists over the years. She is without doubt the best female artist i have ever seen. I saw her again in Glasgow a few months later headlining her own show. Utterly brilliant. Hallelujah performed to perfection both times, effortlessly. I also had the privilege of speaking with her on both occasions. What a modest, humble and friendly human being. Brilliant song writer, and performer. Real music, about real life, talent oozing from her. What a voice.!!
My husband and I flew into Chicago just to catch Brandi’s concert back in 2012. I volunteered to sign up concert goers before the concert started. It was a Wonderful experience as we paid for great seats and we were given back stage passes to meet Brandi. She was incredibly kind and thoughtful. I asked her what prompted her to write Pride and Joy. She thought carefully then said it had to do with an argument she had with her Mom when she was 17. I appreciated her openness and honesty. That concert and meeting will go down as one of my most memorable life experiences. Glad people are appreciating the talent she was blessed with.
Thank you so much for sharing what Brandi said "Pride and Joy" meant to her! I've been listening to it for years, and it always makes me think of my mom and our very complicated relationship. I really love knowing this, because I always felt it is written about her own mother somehow. What a fantastic experience you had, getting to meet her backstage!
An impromptu choice followed quickly by a depth of feeling that is unparalleled. Took but a few seconds for BC to set her frame of mind to dazzle us all. Such talent.
Agreed, but check out her duets with Anderson East. I'm confident that you won't be disappointed. It's my opinion that he is the male version of Brandi. Brilliant and eclectic.
I’ve heard many artists cover this song but Brandi Carlile’s performance is absolutely mind blowing and palpably beautiful! I’m sitting here mesmerized and moved to goosebumps, tears and even more goosebumps! Absolutely sensational! ❤🥰
Just the amazing control she has over that beautiful instrument that is her voice. What a maestro. This was stunningly good. *Everything* *she* *sings* is stunningly good.
@chrishayworth282 I just said the same thing! OMGOODNESS, She is so phenomenal! I'm a brand new fan of hers. I just saw her perform for the 1st time myself w/P!nk in honor of Sinbad O'Connor just a few hours after the announcement of her passing 😢
Watching as we say goodbye (and good riddance!) to 2022, I am fortunate to see her progression as an artist and as a humanitarian. The way she brought Joni to this festival 14 years later was beyond touching. And it takes Brandi all of one verse to make this last-minute choice her own. Wow!
And now I'm completely obsessed with her music , her songwriting , her story . her work on behalf of refugee kids from war zones . And I have all of her work at my finger tips a few clicks away . I am approaching the end of my life and feel totally blessed to have found Brandi Carlile ! I dream of seeing her in person but I know that's not going to happen . Brandi Carlile , I love you !
And I'm discovering her tonight. I was drawn to look up Emmy Lou Harris's haunting song "Red Girl" that I heard playing back in the kitchen at a retreat I was on over the weekend. I noticed a cover by Brandi Carlile from a Prairie Home Companion. That led to finding this deeply moving version of Cohen's anthem. Yes, Robert B. You have summed up the elements of the song beautifully.
Brandi, there are many versions of this song, but you truly touch the nerve when you sing this song. My dad and a beautiful gal I met at the hospital dad's are going through a difficult time of cancer. the way you sing just catches my heartstrings. So i dedicate this song to Mei, her sis and Mom and especially her father who has a rare form of cancer an d of course my dad. It's hard when you're 79/80 to go tru this horrible disease. So for our superhero dads. ROCK ON! WE LOVE YOU WITH ALL OUR WAKING BREATH AND HEART......YVONNE & MEI
"In her rendition, on the other hand, Brandi Carlile is able to make herself an instrument upon which the song plays, rather than needing to wrestle with and vanquish it. Her version foregrounds the song, not herself or her voice; it is, we might say, an appropriately reverential take for a song called “Hallelujah.” It succeeds not vis-à-vis some canonical version of the song, because this is a song with no original-only covers" ....from an article in the Atlantic about the many covers of Hallelujah. Couldn't agree more with the authors assessment of Brandi's cover...
Currently listening to her audio book on Audible and so glad I decided on that instead of reading. She sings all through it just her and acoustic guitar and I would have missed that reading the book.
There is a beautiful performance of KD Lang singing this to Leonard Cohen the night he was honored for lifetime achievement in Canadian music.. KD interprets every nuance and emotion on every note. Brandi sings this well and takes her time..this is a song for the ages..A brave choice 👏.
...Hallelujah is a simple, but deceptively difficult song to do right ... it requires power, precision and passion delivered in just the right amount at just the right time ... wimps need not apply ... Brandi nails all three elements ... kudos, Girl ...
And the unstated amazing part is that she just did it off the cuff with no planning or preparation. What a great treatment (not rendition) of this song.
Robert Bartelmes okay Simon.... how about just singing the song because you love the Fuck out of it and now you have your chance to..... in front of a lot of people that wanna hear you sing it because they love you and the song... someday I will want to sail away and I’m sure you will know how to build the boat 💋
Robert Bartelmes ...how long did it take you a year ago to write this comment that ruined my dissertation on this lyrical piece combined with musical instruments 😈 it’s like having cotton candy in a rainstorm. Just isn’t the same
I'm a Brandi Carlile late bloomer too. I first heard the story maybe 6 months ago and fell in love with her style and voice (and her pretty face). This effort was my first where the guitarist didn't have a strap across the fretts for the desired tone, and I've heard so many versions. God Bless you, Ms.Brandi.
I stumbled on to her after listening to a commercial and I wanted to know the song - it was "The Story." Ever since, I have to say, she is #1 voice and folk performer for me right now. Makes me cry sometimes when she sings. We're blessed with her talent, lucky to hear her voice and emotion.
As much as I love the original and love Buckley's cover even more...Brandi is truly the master of this song. She's such a talented musician and the closest we have to real female country/bluegrass singers in this generation. We need more like her to bring heart and soul back to country. We also haven't had any new great female artists in the genre in a long time. She's the only one I can think of.
Probably because it’s still really hard to make in as a woman in the music industry. Record companies still have quotas on “female singers” and when they reach it, they won’t take anymore.
"Hallelujah, oh what the hell". The insouciant little girl then transforms herself into an artist and performs a deeply emotional and beautiful reading of an incredible song.
Just discovered her on Austin City Limits tonight 8.3.18. Someone so special with a profoundly moving voice - but more than that. Soulful and emotional and transcendent. I send her good thoughts and blessings for the grace she will pour upon so many souls.
constance pierce yeah I was just recording ACL on public access and Brandi and the Crew were on it blew me back soulful honest and Rockin when she wants 💕🔥👍✌️
I can't hear this and NOT be deeply moved. This is a pristine, clean and POWERFUL re-invention of Cohen's classic. There is new beauty to this each time I come and revisit/replay this performance. Cohen's depth and Brandi's performance; what's not to love?
Some athletes and entertainers sometimes just get into a zone at times when delivering a performance. Not sure what "Zone" Brandi was in here. I'm just glad she was in it, WOW!
Jason Eger ~~ cool. Bless you! It’s an odd song bc it’s so beautiful, sounds religious but isn’t. And what a show piece for her voice!... Do you like it?
Her voice!!!! I had the opportunity to see her open for Pink recently and she is incredible, she sang this song and I love her stripped down version that is just her voice.
(shaking head) Jesus Fucking Christ... This woman is ... I don't even have words. "Brandi carlile" needs to be its own word for flabbergasted knock down stunned in amazement at someones out of this world talent.
I heard her sing this song at the Oregon Zoo amphitheater several years ago. Her voice reverberated off the landscape. It was chilling and thrilling. Just wow.
This was 16 years ok. I'm a new fan of Brandi's music her range is remarkable. I love this song and I think that was one of the best performances I've seen of someone singing that song.
I've never seen this song covered with such emotion, passion, heart, soul and beauty as this one. This ranks up there with the live covers of Rufus Wainwright, k d lang, and John Cale. Brandi Carlile put everything into this song. I saw Leonard Cohen perform this live in 1984, 2009, & 2012. He was a true icon, yet he was a very gentle , humble performer, who let the immense body of his work, speak for itself. Even though he has moved on to another plane of existence, "We have the music". RIP Mr. Cohen. Peace
People need to stop covering this song. Cohen himself was burnt out on the number of covers. But this is an exception. Carlisle could cover the opening to Cheers and it would be well done.
You haven't heard Count Kellam do it. The best. I think he's a better singer, writer and guitar player than Jeff Buckley. I love Jeff but Count is beyond.
Just a stunning voice range, and moving rendition of Hallelujah. I only briefly heard of Brandi Carlile before last week's Newport Folk Festival 2022, Brandi with Joni Mitchell, 14 years later! PS this should be added as #1 to Newsweek's article on 60 Versions of Hallelujah.
I’ve just discovered this this lady’s music after watching Leanne Rimes on The Mask. I love The Story. This lady is a great song writer and singer. Such feeling in her singer xx
Yeah I have it recorded but I think it's b4 2020 but she was rockin and she changes it down and does a song alone on stage her daughter comes out 💕💕❤️she talked about life love understanding great gal seems to me 👏👍✌️
I've heard that there’s a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do ya? I get teared up every time I watch this. Though I am admittedly a little over medicated tonight, Brandi has one of the top ten female voices of all time, in my humble opinion.
Love Brandis voice. Love her writings. Love her. I wish just once to be able to sing like her. It looks so fun to be able to do that little yodal thing she does and be able to have such a big range.
Ashamed to say that I had never heard of this wonderful performer. After listening to this I've sought out other music from her. Again........ wonderful!
I was just driving in my car and heard “The Story”, and I had to pull over to listen to it properly. Brandi’s voice is so beautifully sweet and intensely raw when called upon for emotion. The last time I’d heard such a voice it was the first time I’d heard Jeff Buckley sing “Hallelujah”, it’s no wonder she covered this song and brought her own uniqueness to it while doing so. Thank you Brandi, you just made my day.
I think kd at Vancouver Olympics is incredible, but something about this being an impromptu encore request at Newport Folk makes it something special in its own right. Jeff Buckley's version has always been my favorite because it introduced me to this song, but Brandi blends Buckley's emotion and kd's power to create a stunning rendition. You can tell she has heard arguably the 2 best and created another perfect interpretation that brought me to tears.
Late 2023, still watching our lovely and brilliant Brandi Carlile❣️ What a supreme talent❣️❣️❣️🎶
Brandi’s range is incredible, and her voice melodic. Who else is watching in 2020 during the pandemic?
Watching safely from Canada.

Watching Brandi sing this song is like a religious experience.
How much soul crammed inside just one person!
When music is pleasant as it enters your ears but then reaches your very soul is musical genius. Brandi Carlile has that ability.
A Brandi and Elvis duet would have been unforgettable.🥃😎👌

Brandi's cover and Karise Eden's are probably my favorites. Quite different though.
Nothing against KD Lang, but I prefer Brandi's version.

But now you never show that to me do ya Remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath you drew was Hallelujah
It was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelu-jah
So maybe there's a God above
But all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It’s not a cry that you hear in the night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
It was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hey, Hallelujah
It's just as powerful , if not more so when read as poetry .
Thankayoulah !
And for those who came in late, there are about another 80 verses to this song.
Brilliant Cohen Would Be So Impressed
Oh my.... Brandi, you are amazing! I love Hallelujah and your version just gives me chills.
Welcome to the Bramily. Brandi forever.
Oh yeah it's great to be a part 💕👍❤️✌️
What a majestic performance. Can't stop the tears from soaking my cheeks.
I get teared up every time I watch this. Though I am admittedly a little over medicated tonight, Brandi has one of the top ten female voices of all time, in my humble opinion.
Yeah it's onion chopper😂😭💕✌️
Great interpretation, great vocal technique...and charisma! I am discovering America the beautiful here!
Love Brandis voice. Love her writings. Love her. I wish just once to be able to sing like her. It looks so fun to be able to do that little yodal thing she does and be able to have such a big range.
Masterpiece lyrics and vocals. Bravo
LOVE LOVE LOVE Brandi Carlyle's version of this song! PERFECTLY performed
💥 This girl can SING!! 💥
Perfection
She's the best!!! I love her voice
I've been loving her since 2010, and nothing has changed.
Her voice and soul are amazing
I first heard Brandi Carlile many years ago, but her voice still amazes me
She's guitar banger too 💕🎸with piano 👍✌️
this girl and her wife are amazing .....true love....!
I too remember the first time hearing "The Story" I was driving home listening to WFUV and was struck by this powerful song.
She did a great job..not surprised tho, she's so raw. Take a listen to K.D. Lang's version...omg
@@nannye211 I just listened to K.D. Lang. She was exceptional, but I prefer Brandi's version.
Beautiful !
💞💞🙏🙏
I've heard dozens of versions of this song and for me, there is no other version like this one.
She can sing anything, love her. But I have to disagree, K.D.Lang is great, then Brandi.
Rose Young, Stipulated disagreement.
Just found this young lady, such a force, I hope they are lots of her stuff on utube, gb
