  • MPGomatic.com puts a 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport Limited hatchback to a grueling 400+ mile test drive. This is the most fuel-efficient AWD vehicle sold in America on the open road.
    Full Review: www.mpgomatic.c...
The 2012 Subaru Impreza is powered by a sequential multi-port fuel injected DOHC 2.0-liter Boxer (horizontally opposed) four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower (HP) and 145 foot pounds of torque.
The Impreza is available with a five-speed manual transmission or CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic, as either a five-door hatchback or four-door sedan, but is only offered in All-Wheel-Drive (AWD). We tested a CVT-equipped five-door Sport Limited.
This review, like most of our reviews, includes our trademark MPGomatic 0-60 MPH acceleration test.

It took a while on this one between posting the 0-60 and the review. Apologies for that! These videos take way too long to shoot and edit. I want to get them done faster, but I'm doing it all on my own at this point. I asked RUclips for help with some resources, but they turned me down. They can give a million bucks to corporate channels, but little guys like me get no financial help building their channels. I love doing what I do, but I'm about ready to toss it in.

    What else should we cover?

I've had this car for about a month now and I can tell you firsthand that this car is really nice. I needed a car that can get good gas mileage and it does. On the highway, I've gotten 44MPG. When I need more power I just use the manual mode and it juices up pretty well. It's not wrx, but it still pretty fast. How much power to you really need? It's a beautiful car, especially the sport limited which I have - silver with black leather interior.

how much did you have to baby the pedal to get those mpg averages. Is it realistic with driving in normal everyday driving? I saw a video with you guys doing mpg testing on roads where there are no cars around so no need to be concerned with going too slow by trying not to break with other traffic around.

The 2011 version of this car is 170hp and available in FWD or AWD in my country. It is heavier than the 2012 model, and of course, still CVT but is the same power output as the 2.5i engine, like in the much heavier Legacy model. The 2012 is also available in both FWD and AWD here in NZ.

Awesome review, what do you think that 0-60 was. When i test drove one with CVT it felt peppy to 60.

The gasoline we buy at the pump is like a Mai Tai ocktail. Every bartender makes it a little different. Some good. Some not so good.
I found a bunch of kits on Google and eBay, but haven't bought one yet. Search for "ethanol test kit".
A 25% drop between E10 and E85 doesn't seem too far off the mark. Engines need to be tuned for E85 to get the most out of it ... I've spoken with a bunch of drivers that have switched from expensive racing fuel to E85, but you have to be sure of the quality.

MPGs always depend on how, when, and where you drive. I drive with a light foot, but I don't drive slow. Our state speed limit is 65 MPH, so I target 68 as the cruising speed on the highway. If your conditions allow for higher speeds, your gas mileage will drop. The trick with traffic is to leave room when you can and anticipate the road ahead.

I've been running Royal Purple in my S2K and Shell Rotella in the 01 VW Golf. Happy with both. Gotta watch for the sales and stock up.
Disconnecting belts has the potential to boost MPGs, I'd reckon. But living without A/C is like going back to the stone age ... of my youth! ;) We never had A/C when I was a kid. Not in the car. Not in the house. I dunno how we lived without it, but man, it was a luxury back in the day ...

E85 is super high octane juice. Less energy, but way higher octane ... and it runs cooler/cleaner than conventional gasoline. Pump E85 might be 100 octane (that's what I can get here at the one station in south Jersey), but Ignite's racing E85 is 105 octane. Pump premium is 93.
If cars had engines that were truly optimized for E85, they could be downsized and run more boost. Smaller engines, more horsepower. Crazy stuff!

Amsoil is distributor only and it's about $12 a quart. However, tests have been done on big rigs where it has held up for 100K miles. You can go to their website and find a distributor. Basically, it's just like an Amway or Avon person. I have a couple of them around here but I haven't taken the plunge just yet. The Mobil 1 is not quite as good as Amsoil but for the price it's probably the best compromise. My Jetta was a manual and I carried about 100 lbs of stuff with me all the time.

That was an issue early on, no? I didn't experience any problems in the vehicles I drove. They feel different than the slushboxes that most folks are familiar with. The Getrag in the Mitsubishi Evo is sick fast. I like the VW DSGs, as well.

There's a deposit in Alaska on/near Gull Island that will power the USA for 200 years. Oil is in plentiful supply and there has never been any kind of shortage. In fact, deposits previously thought to be tapped out in the Gulf of Mexico have started filling back in with black goodness. A Texas A&M researcher discovered that and reported it but the report vanished within a week from the media. They want everybody to think we don't have any more.

  • @mpgomatic

It all starts with a community/audience and proven skills. Once you've accumulated a significant number of eyeballs, you must make contacts within the industry. The manufacturers provide the vehicles, free of charge, to legitimate media outlets. Write.Network.Produce.Lather.Rinse.Repeat.
I spend a good bit of money on gasoline and car care supplies. My fuel bill last year was over $4,000. The cars arrive with a full tank of fuel and spotless ... I always try to send them back that way.

In the UK and most of Europe I hear that you can get 98 or even 99 octane pump gas. The thing with ethanol is that it's made from food. That causes food prices to jump and there is no shortage of oil in the ground despite what many have said. Just the other day I saw that corn prices have shot up and that is certainly due in some measure to ethanol production. Maybe we could start using sugar cane like Brazil if it's cheaper to grow.

I think I'm sold on the Subaru Impreza model. I was looking at all types of cars with different MPG ratings. It was either a Prius or this and the Symmetrical AWD has me hooked after riding in a friends 500HP "05 STI. I know I won't be no where near as fast his STI but it's the best MPG I could find in a great AWD car.

Test drove this here in Japan and was surprised how some parts of the interior (dash in particular) were of better quality than the bigger more expensive Legacy. This car also comes with a 1.6L as well and I can only imagine how slow that thing would be. Some things you are missing in the U.S. seem to be the color vehicle info display that shows AWD info, fuel economy, among other things, and last but not least no Eyesight ACC, adaptive cruise control in a compact is quite a good value.

  • @MrRagingRanter

My only concern is that it seems slightly underpowered? I didn't get the impression you felt this was an issue, but I've seen other reviews where they really complain about it. I'd sure feel better buying this car if they added a bit more power without affecting fuel economy. Is Subaru thinking of bringing in direct injection soon? Kia's new Forte has a direct injected 2L engine with 173 HP and 154 foot-lbs torque that still gets great fuel economy.

Yes they do.I used to be a very active poster there when I had mine.TDi's win the race on MPG but I really like the W124 Mercedes 300D.I bought one with 200K miles on it and drove it for 100K before my shadetree mechanic skills finally caught up with me.I blew the engine due to a tiny screwup that quickly escalated.I paid $2225 for it though not bad for 100K miles.Of course, I probably spent $3K on parts over that time but nothing for labor. They have the solidity and luxury that VW doesn't.

The problem is that they have no competition. Put an alternative fuel station at every street corner across from dino gas and watch what happens. :) There is a company in the next town that is making 93 octane drop-in gasoline substitute from natural gas, wood chips and miscanthus grass. Localized production with a goal of $65 per barrel. Jobs in every town. Not just ND, MT, and the Rockies.

The best stuff around is Amsoil but Mobil 1 is pretty close.I used to use Royal Purple until I saw some test results on the stuff.Granted, the test is posted on Amsoil's website but I think it was ran by an independent lab.I unplugged my A/C compressor and what I thought could be my clutch slipping WENT AWAY.The compressor has been bogging down my engine pretty badly. Is your Golf a TDi? I had a 98 Jetta TDi that was the bee's knees.I drove it like a bat out of hell and got 43 HWY and 38 City.

Thanks! HD video takes a long(!) time to process and upload. I just did two in HD: the Mustang RTR and the Formula Drift/V8 videos. The FD video took overnight to export from Final Cut and half a day to upload (although it's 25 minutes long ... the reviews are 1/6 the size).
I'm shooting with all HD cameras at this point, with the exception of the one that I use for the 060 clips. Once I replace that, I'll go HD with the reviews. I'd like to upgrade to a faster Mac and beefier cable line, too.

There's so much misinformation about Ethanol, Roger. Ethanol can come from many places. Most of the Ethanol we get here in the USA is made from corn now, but a big % of the corn from the distilling process ends up being fed to livestock anyway, as "millers grains". The new cellulosic Ethanol plants will use all kinds of stuff, from municipal waste to stalks and corncobs. Yep, garbage into fuel. If the price of gasoline drops, it's no longer economically feasible for Big Oil to drill for it.

  • @The_Osprey
    @The_Osprey 12 лет назад

Also, my last oil change I mistakenly used dino instead of synthetic and I'm pushing 4K miles on it in summer heat.It might be breaking down a bit. Where do you get the testing kits for the fuel?I've heard of people driving the flex fuel vehicles using the E85 actually seeing a decrease of 25% in MPG compared to E10.I don't think there is enough consistency in the blending of the ethanol to know for sure unless you test every tank and compare MPG while considering all extenuating circumstances.

I own a 2010 forester premium with the all weather package. Love the car but definitely sucks up fuel. We are actually thinking of trading it in for the Impreza sport premium. 36mpg sounds pretty good compared to the 23mpg I get with my forester. Now that I don't have to haul around strollers and a bunch of bulky items for my kids I can downsize a little for better mileage. I think they did the right thing by switching to the 2.0 L for gas mileage. If you want power get the STI or WRX.

  • @The_Osprey
    @The_Osprey 12 лет назад

It is very similar to a steam engine. Inherently unsafe but will work in a pinch. I don't think you have to modify the engine at all. You just pump in the gases produced by super heated wood in a low oxygen environment and it ignites just like gasoline in a cylinder.

Thanks for getting back. I'm hesitant to get one. I researched this car for over 6+ months. Based on forums online, 1st hand owners most common problems: (some, not all)
*burning/high oil consumption (~15% of owners) - about a quart of oil every 1000-2000 miles!
*Squeaky driver seat (lube on the springs inside wear off?)
*rattling coming from front top speaker dash
*front passenger seat airbag sensor problems
*water RETAINED in doors after rain/washing car
*hard to reach rated MPG claims

Great rundown! Gotta wonder if we'll see those bits upgraded here in the States for 2013. Adaptive Cruise Control would be huge. Would love to see the diesel, too ... but who knows when/if it'll ever happen ...

  • @The_Osprey

That's cool. Have you ever heard of cars that run on "wood gas?" I saw a story about a prepper that had an old pickup that ran on wood. Basically, he had an open fire pit in the back of his truck that heated up a barrel filled with wood but was sealed. This is basically how they make charcoal too. The gases will burn in a "gasoline" engine. All that guy needs is cellulose to keep his truck running.

Personally, I just bought the 2012 Subaru Impreza Sedan AWD and it's amazing. Even though it's not WRX, it has the 2.5L, 265hp engine. Obviously, this means the gas mileage is practically reversed from the underpowered version, but I still love the car.

    • @toyota420xp
      @toyota420xp 10 лет назад +5

What the heck do you mean. To get 265 hp you have to have a wrx. Otherwise your looking at 148 hp. No if you mean a wrx sti then that would be 305 hp.

Here in my little slice of Texas you can find 100% gas but it's not easy. In fact, I can only find one around here.(city of 200K people on a major interstate) I've noticed an increase on my '98 Ford Ranger 3.0 with a manual transmission of about 2.5 MPG (From 20.9 - 23.4 under same conditions)

At one time Advance auto parts carried Redline products but I don't know if they still do. There are a lot of myths concerning oils and I blame that on Pennzoil. It was their marketing campaign that suggested 3K mile change intervals. I used to work for a car rental agency in college and as long as we could document 7500 mile oil change intervals the manufacturers would take them back and sell them as program cars....and that was with dino oil.

I agree.I actually wondered how they would make a special batch of fuel at a refinery for such a limited market.I only found this place about 14 days ago and that was the result of my first tank.Since then it almost seems like it has fallen back into the same range as the advertised E10.Most pumps here will state "May contain up to 10% ethanol."However, it has been at or above 100F lately and I think my A/C compressor is beginning to lock up on me.It has almost stalled the engine a couple times.

Holy crow. I'm dying to test this stuff. That's a substantial difference ... over 10%? From what I've read, 100% Ethanol has 30% less energy than conventional Gasoline. So in *theory* with the typical E10 blend, we should see 3% less MPG. But in the real world, 10%? Yow!

Every car has reliability problems throughout the line, if you take really good care of your car it will last you a very long time. The Imprezza has a higher average rating than the Toyota Matrix and I know from experience that the Matrix is a bullet proof automobile. Sometimes you get unlucky but most often if you treat them right they will treat you right.

Luckily, I can just disconnect the plug to keep it from engaging accidentally. If I have it on now at idle and then start to go it will cause the engine to buck and the belt to squeal. I really need it so I will probably replace it soon along with the damn clutch...but that's another story altogether. Maybe with an oil change to a premium synthetic(I'm thinking the Mobil 1 5W20 I saw at Wally world the other day) and not running the A/C I should get some pretty good MPG numbers.

the only reason the cvt gets better mileage is because they purposly fuck up the ratios on the stick shifts so people will pay extra for their stupid automatics.

It's too bad it's so low on power and has a cvt. Otherwise it would probably be a fun wagon.
