    Doug articulated food addiction/moderation perfectly. If a person puts the bar too low, they remain in the pleasure trap. If they put the bar too high, they fall into the ego trap and quit. Dr. Fuhrman's strategy makes sense for drug and alcohol abuse, where one mistake triggers the cram circuit. But with food, unless people can live in a bubble to control the environment, there will be times when a bit of salt or oil during food preparation. What Jen is saying is perfection shouldn't be the enemy of perfect.

    I was non compliant two nights ago, when I do that it really depresses me and knocks me for a loop. I have lost 100 pounds, but I am still fat at 300 pounds. I see the fat person, not the person who has lost 100 pounds. I am embarrassed to be seen in public and tend to isolate, but crave socialization. I have been clean and sober almost 4 years, so I have come a long way but that is hard to remember when you feel lost and overwhelmed. I am fighting a food addiction and a psychological battle. This was a great episode but it stirred up a lot of feelings and muddied the emotional waters.

    Everybody is different. Some people do better with the super strict approach while others do better with a more liberal approach. We are just not the same. However, one way we are the same is we all need to just get back on track when we mess up instead of lamenting in it and beating our
    self up. Just more on.

    This is a pretty interesting side of the story, specifically the discussion around what implementation is the best and the psychology of moving to a healthy WFPB diet. So far I've been pretty focused just on optimizing my diet and understanding the best diet, not on the psychology of food addiction, etc...

    The negative tone here is disappointing. I attended both talks at the NHA. Dr. Howk's session was great. Her message was clear. Dr. Fuhrman's session was classic Dr. Fuhrman. I did not think it was a personal 'dis' response to Dr. H's presentation. (Or was it the Q&A at the end that something was said? I need to go back to the recordings.) Each person presenting at the NHA brings their aspect of a healthy ifestyle to the conference that relates to NHA's mission/vision. I respect the passion and knowledge you all have for our health. Thank you.

      Yes... I will say, from having done both, only when I went all in 100% was I able to lose ALL the weight I wanted! And I also had amazing energy and zest for life with no stress or back and forth arguing with myself all day. The decision was already made and it cleared up my mind to focus on other things. No cravings after the initial few days to get my taste buds reset.
      Whenever I have done baby steps, or cheat meals, or anything like that, I have had much more stress, constant thinking about food, and way less success with actual weight loss or vitality.

    • @bonniemartin4232
      @bonniemartin4232 Год назад

      Yes, I didn't care for the negative tone either. Dr. L has the tendency at times to come across as a know it all even though for the most part, I like what he has to say. I like the way Jen delivers her message MUCH better. Dr. L. seems to have a bit of an ego. i don't get that with Dr. Fuhrman. He comes across to me as a very compassionate person but definitely sees things a certain way which is okay with me. I also don't think Dr. F. advocates being perfect either. He just believes playing around with unhealthy foods makes it more difficult on the person which I can see. There's no harm in trying to achieve eating as well as you can and Dr. F is going to give you the best foods to eat to do that.

    Thank you Chef AJ and you both! I am absolutely delighted by this nuanced and human and reality -evidence-based talk, as even if I always was intuitively aiming to find out about nutrition and health, we are talking 30 years of finding the way….And how to navigate it = It has been a journey, and now I’m in a great groove, and sometimes people who are more extreme have pushed me away as on some level it’s a little bit unreasonable and unrealistic unless you are yourself super conscious/health nut case/hyper something….which I m to a certain extent as I kept on trying, wandering, falling of the wagon, finding a new thread etc up to now….
    Life is a journey as Jen points out (in her own way) we are on for the marathon and for me honest, realistic and sensible education, thing they both gift 🎁 the world, is my best compas 🧭 to navigate health promoting everyday choices ….

    I feel like for some, trying to be goldhamer perfect would cause more stress in their minds and therefore body, that any advantage in striving to go from a lisle diet to gold Hamer diet would be negligible or even harmful to overall health. The answer always seems to be, it depends.

Question for Dr. Doug Lisle - He spoke of his work on "Closing the Loop" on tragic events that hold people back. This resonated as a powerful tool. Can he talk more about that in your next session. Well they all say the same thing.....research shows (fill in the blank). i just take what works for me. I like all of what they have to say...Dr. Fuhrman, Goldhammer, McDougall, etc. While i like what Dr. Lisle has to say, there is no reason for me to believe he knows any more than the rest of them when it comes to how to eat. It doesn't bother me one advocates being stricter than another. I don't necessarily see that as something that is wrong. All of them give their professional opinion on what they think is best and it is up to each of us to take this information and find what works for us. While I take a little from each, I no longer get upset if I get off track and overeat because I know I will get right back on it. I'm a normal weight too.

    • @draperbr
      @draperbr 3 года назад

      Language constantly evolves. This is why dictionaries are updated constantly. And it’s not just new words being added. Usage and pronunciation often change over time. When a certain threshold of usage or pronunciation exist within society (even when said usage or pronunciation is technically “wrong”), then the language evolves. It’s always been that way. The English language is almost unrecognizable from its origins.

    • @marleri
      @marleri 2 года назад +2

      "They" is already the pronoun used when the gender of the person is unknown. For instance, if a cab is coming to get you, and you don't know the cab driver's gender,
      you would say "they are on the way to pick me up". Even though you know that there is only one driver in the cab, you still use "they" in proper English language.
      If you are driving in traffic and a car cuts in front of you you will say, "they cut me off!" You don't know and can't assume the gender of the driver. (People often assume a gender based on the aggressive behavior of the driver and say "he cut me off!" and this is precisely why ppl who don't identify as boy or girl /woman or man (agender ppl) will choose "they" as their pronouns, because they don't want to assume the societies' assigned or assumed set of behaviors or traditional jobs or thoughts or emotions etc.)

Human babies and children are also much more reliant for much, much longer time on their parents keeping them safe. I do appreciate certain advice/wisdom that Doug & Jen bring to the table, but do not agree with their stance on trauma at all.

      @@michellehashish5341 Dr. Lisle and Dr. Howk do not agree with the mainstream therapists like Bruce D. Perry, Bessel van der Kolk or M.D.’s like Gabor Mate. These people operate on a trauma-based approach which is a complete contrast to what Lisle & Howk base their practice on. Dr. Lisle & Howk are evolutionary psychologists not CBT therapists. Lisle & Howk would make my coworkers gasp and heave in shock. 😐 I personally enjoy some of their practical suggestions and although I don’t believe in evolution (I’m Christian) I grab some pointers here and there. 🙂

      I agree Angel. This is the one area where Dr. Lisle makes me feel like he has no clue what he is talking about. Just because your environment is updated as he said doesn't mean that you have the capability to be able to now interact with it based on past experience. If a child is never shown any compassion whatsoever, how would that child possibly now how to show compassion to others? Because his or her environment has been updated and the perpetrator is no longer in front of them? Malarky! He's basically saying parenting doesn't matter and I think it matters very much.
      I don't like the way he continually says the truth is and then gives his spiel. The truth is he is ONE person and there are plenty of psychologists who disagree with him that are every bit as intelligent as he is so I'll leave it at that. Most of the stuff he says with respect to food, I can agree with but I will never agree with him on this and I don't believe the research agrees with him either.

    • @bonniemartin4232
      @bonniemartin4232 Год назад

      @@Goodbyeeveryonehere Well what are you saying then? If it does affect you, then it changes the person you could have become. You can't become the person that you were meant to be because of the trauma you suffer regardless of whether or not your environment becomes pristine later in life. How does Dr. Lisle think we learn to interact with our environment and other people? Seriously through just a cost benefit analysis? No!
