I always listen to Dr McDougall, and Mary. It keeps me on track. The diet works ... it's the only one where I have a natural, easy and proper bowel motion - which also means mental clarity as clear gut = clear mind. It's the most economical diet too. I enjoyed 2 bowls of oats for breakfast today. Thanks, @CHEF AJ - for continuing to do these discussions and lectures.

I absolutely love Dr McDougall. Back in the 60s out here in Indonesia, there lots of cases of beri-beri in kids living in distant islands from the metropolis. The local doctors simply prescribed them to eat their mungbeans porridge that is waaay cheaper than the vitamin pills. Personally after listening to Dr McDougall i gave up all meat, dairy & eggs. Still can’t give up my cake though but i only eat 1cm slice of it on birthdays & holidays.

When I was 15 years old I was on Ritalin and my BP was 200 over 190 so I got off of it and even though I'm 130 pounds overweight my BP is normal. I'm now on my way to losing weight with a whole foods plant based diet.

You will have days that seem like things are impossible. Please just keep believing in the process. I hope you have support. If you don't be your own support. I have my issues and I'm My Own supporter. Though I'm not always that great at it. But I'm really good at giving out advice. I'm so glad that you chose a whole food plant-based route rather than killing yourself eating dead animals and very few vegetables and no carbohydrates to feed your brain. Talk to people who do keto you can tell that they're missing something. And they're taking on all of that horrible for lack of words "energy that those animals endured". Including an untimely death.

@@lynnh1682 you certainly don't have to be Irish to eat a potato. Why people fear them I do not know? It's what you smother them in that is bad for you. Finding a way to flavor a potato without using fat and so much salt though a pinch doesn't hurt. My point is it's not the potato hurting anything in fact it's good for the microbiome. And it's been good without being empty calories it has more vitamins than people even realize. There's always going to be people from both sides putting out nutrition but the thing about plant-based science is it's just science. Whereas the big companies will put out anything that is biased to sell things that make you unhealthy so you have to take the medications that the same company owns. You get the idea. Doritos and Mountain Dew equal illness. Have you ever noticed that doctors don't really ask what you eat they ask about calories? It does matter what kind of nutrition is in the calories. This fear of carbohydrates is confused because the carbohydrates that are not good are the empty ones. Yet they'll drink a diet beverage with some chemical in it that causes the body to create more fat. It also causes cancer. Even some of the natural sweetener Alternatives have been so processed that they're like Freebase cocaine. Isolated and dangerous. Stick the Whole plant foods and life will work itself out. Remember vegan butter is not a whole food being Mayo is not a whole food but an avocado spread on there instead is.

The animals we eat are plant eaters & have a better diet than most humans, the herbivores who eat proper plants don't have deficiencies, so they provide humans some nutrients they lack but obviously humans still need plants to eat to have optimal help. Most people don't eat enough plants so they reach for supplements. Thanks for explaining this so well Dr.McDougall, I think I finally understand this problem of the typical diet, and can not be concerned about taking supplements. Ironic that a chicken might have a better diet than a human...or use to. I hear they are now feeding them species inappropriate toxic foods, which gets passed on to whoever eats them. So thankful that I finally heard the truth & listened to Dr.McDougall, thanks too Chef AJ for another most amazing podcast.

My supplement? it goes like this -
in the hot summer weather, i'm in the habit of freezing (in a big-mouth 8 liter, glass flour jar) chopped and washed fruit/veggie mix (lemon, red cabbage, bell pepper, apple, carrot, tomato, celery, green leaves of all sorts) a bit of turmeric and black pepper, and i pop it in my bullet blender with some water, a splash of lime juice, and blend it up. I love it, and i have it 3 times a day. I can also grab "whatever" out the grab bag of goodies, and stir-fry it:) or....toss some in a soup.
I also keep about 12 fruits and 20 veggies in my freezer, ready to go. nice with a splash of lime and maybe (just for flavor) a tiny splash of tequila in that smoothie makes a nice "superlight cocktail.
So....big bucket of washed, dried, and chopped veggies. stick it in a freezer, and grab when you want it;)

Lots of great info here! Chef AJ, I wish I knew where to get the Omega 3 test you referred to. Is there a name for the specific test or a lab you use? I currently consume 1 T of ground flax and 1 oz total of walnuts/ pumpkin seeds with my salad. I have tons of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s in my family and I read all the plant docs/ nutritionists. Dr. Greger, Brenda Davis RD, Dr. Fuhrman and the Sherzai docs recommend my current regimen. I’m slim (not worried about the weight part) but I would drop the nuts if I felt my levels were good- I’m only adding them for health and would rather not buy/eat stuff that I don’t actually need. There is conflicting advice on all this. Even Dr. Esselstyn says to have 1 T of flax….. I’m sure you know this. Trying to figure out what is best. I hope I can get the test you got. The test would settle the issue, but I guess my current results will reflect the nut/seed consumption. Perhaps I will quit for a year and get re-tested. Maybe there are individual differences in this area? Is it true you eat purslane regularly? I can’t find that here in the Chicago area. Thanks again for these videos.

    QUESTION:
I have only listened to 40 minutes so far, while I washed dishes. I have a question that I think most people, vegans, should want the answer to. If supplements flood the body with too many vitamins then would it not stand true that juicing and smoothies do the same thing? When you juice you take about 5 times the amount of vitamins and juice it down to drink.
I do believe that our bodies need what is grown because we have not been born with pills in our hands to live.

If you take the example of beta carotene. The supplement gives you 1 type of beta carotene but a carrot has a lot of different carotenes. All your receptors will be full of the supplemented kind as it floods the system, so there is no more room for the rest. This is why supplementation is often not a good thing. Always supplement with B12, but it's the only one whole food plant based varied eaters need (and so do the rest, animals in the livestock industry often get injected with it as well, but there is no guarentee).

I would only recommend Vitamin D3 (if your blood work shows you're low) , B12 and a really good plant protein powder if you're diet isn't getting much protein otherwise. Other than that, save your money if you're eating healthy and your blood work is good.

Really? One discussion with no data studies to back it up, sprinkled with the vegan push, a pinch of God and you chuck the D into the bin when it is known that over 50% of the population is deficient? As far as imbalance goes - he admits that we peenout the excess. Blaming animal food and oils just another way of saying meat is only for the wealthy.

Also if you check the videos the data studies are usually listed in the links. Dr. Mc Dougall spends around an hour or 2 a day reading medical papers as a hobby.

The inuit who had no choice are unable to get into ketosis. Why is this? If fat and animal protein cause no issues? I've been listening a lot to dr. Mc Dougall and dr. P. Rogers who do a good job explaining why we should not be eating high amounts of fat and protein.

I had osteoporosis. Then I took silica, boron, calcium. 6 mth later X-ray showed I’m at the osteopenia range! I can’t say I’m 100% vegan/vegetarian, I eat eggs, some clean meats. I’m not a big eater, it’s only a very small amt I eat, of meat when I do eat them. But no matter how much I “overdose” on plants, some days I still feel somewhat something is missing, and an egg always resolves that. I drink black coffee and tea. Now I’m researching coffee. Not all coffees are the same. Many are roasted with an oil base and some table sugar. More research later. This is all I know so far.

I eradicated mine years ago just by completely ditching any dairy with lactose. Only fermented dairy with zero lactose is ok for me. If I eat or drink any milk or whey or even eat paneer, I'll become sick for day or two... So if you aren't already, first step is to ditch milk. Fermented raw dairy such as raw butter and raw cheese have zero lactose and are completely fine for me... (that are only animal food I consume).
