    I saw a bodybuilding contest in New Jersey in which Sergio Oliva and Chet Yorton guest posed. Both of these legends looked phenomenal! When Chet was done posing, he grabbed the mic and gave a lecture to the audience on the evils of anabolic steroids. I remember him naming Frank Zane as an example of a bodybuilder who was "up and down like a yo-yo" in terms of size based on whether he was on a cycle or not!

    Wow, very well done and amazing video! Might shut up some of the nostalgia over the "old days" where "everyone" was drug free. Ive been lifting 39 years and it did t take long for me as a teen to realize all the pros were lying about being natty. I was at the tail end of beingable to get good pharma grade gear, now its all mostly UGL. These men, as well as a few women were the pioneers of the sport and I envy the lack of information they must have had because now a days we get info from a 10" diameter hose...too much too fast and it hets confusing. They had to figure things out themselves, there were no real studies and few people were doing it. Also, the experiment on the high school kids is unbelievable!Cant wait to watch part 2, but this time on my tv. Well done!

      Agreed. Especially if you state it like this "Natty Yorton defeats drugged to the gills, Arnold". PED's were mostly considered benign supervitamins and no one knew the morality, legality or health issues that eventually became manifest with time. This was a very interesting documentary. In the mid-90's, I weighed 165lbs and very lean. By the 1999-2000, I weighed 205 @ 5-7% bf, all natural. I stand 5'8" tall, so I looked pretty jacked. Now at age 63, I'm at 190lbs, but probably around 15+% bf. Still lifting, but injuries have slowed me down. I'm proud that I never took gear. But I do not judge those who have. I simply did not want to deal with any adverse health issues. Part 2 of your series is getting clicked next. Cheers!

    • @truthsayerq7264
      @truthsayerq7264 Год назад

      @mickylawless1941
      There is a hugely marked difference between 200lbs at 10% bf and 205lbs at 5-7%! If you'd said 205 at 12-15bf....which isn't shoddy at your height....then you may have been in with a shout, but your claim simply doesn't stack up.
      My challenge was not designed to offend, simply to ask perhaps for some level of clarification. I myself had, and I guess still do have, reasonable genetics. I worked out religiously when I raced as a junior formula driver many years ago in order to ensure physical compatibility with the car. Even then I had a passing interest in bodybuilding and always paid attention to some of the finer points, in particular bodyfat. My lowest ever measurement was 7.5%, and at 6ft that left me at a pretty emaciated 165-168lbs, believe me when I say that some of the taller drivers weighed even less. Today I weigh around 200lbs and my bf is probably 12-15%, and I can assure you that I would not be capable of being much better than that without some "assistance".
      Check out Mike Quinn at the 1988 Olympia! He is 5ft 8in and weighs 204lbs at the show, and he placed 5th. That package, with somewhere between 5-7% bf saw him as the 5th best bodybuilder in the world on that particular day. And he was as heavy a user as any other pro at the time, as you would expect.
      So you can see where my utter scepticism comes from!

    Great video containing well researched information and statements from past bodybuilders. It's pretty clear that most of the bodybuilders from at least 1960 were taking some form of ped's during training and when competing. And since then bodybuilding competition, promoters like Hoffman and the Weider brothers were spreading lies and lies. Telling fans and upcoming bodybuilders that they can achieve physiques like the Mr Olympia champions from using their training programmes and protein supplements. All in the name of fame and money, and since then the greed and lies have grown exponentially till what we are left with today is one big bodybuilding joke. To think that when I was younger I looked up to these so called champions and tried to emulate them. Now I know that every single Mr Olympia winner and those they competed against are frauds and cheated their way to the top. How far bodybuilding has fallen and sadly I can't see it ever returning to the chemical drug free life it started off as. Health and longevity have become a dream and instead replaced by ego driven, narcissistic drug taking freaks. Who don't represent the true drug free natural bodybuilders who train for health and longevity. I'm glad my will was strong enough to stay away from ped's even though it meant that I would never be able to compete as a professional bodybuilder!

    I would like to thank you for your excellent piece on PED use in bodybuilding. I believe it is reasonable to presume that Grimek won the 48 Universe on PEDs and after the 49 Universe was canceled, helped his protege Steve Reeves with the cocktail for victory in 1950. I believe Park used the same cocktail to win in 51. And as you say Reeves was no bastion of morality and Park would go on to mentor Scwartzenner who came to live with Park in South Africa.
    Naturally, Arnold would like to know the secret cocktail that won Park the Mr. Universe which would make sense.
    Many times Arnold has stated that whatever it took to be Mr. Universe I would do! I would say all champions believe that and Reg Park was no exception. Take a close look at the photo of Reg Park and a young Arnold at 15:02. notice anything?
    The look and mass of their bodies are almost identical. And Park is 20 years older?

      Wrong about Grimek. Natty Life and Golden Era Bookworm have done a better evaluation of when testosterone supplements might have entered bodybuilding. Grimek didn't even enquire about it until he'd retired from competition, there's a letter to prove it. Even as late as 1962-1968 the use was not widespread, but restricted to those at the York Barbell Club and it was only leaking out slowly from about 1962. See articles in Ironman and sundry other magazines of the time where they're clueless about what people might be taking. The use of 1930s/40s testosterone was not greatly different to replacement therapy nowadays. You give that to to a person with no deficiency and you lower the person's natural production. The real PED change is with Dianabol and it wasn't even marketed until 1958.

    • @ibberman

I for one was doctor administered 1 cc Test (the average TRT dose) every 10 days at the age of 56, and it brought my T level to 2400, far more than enough to build muscle.

      Thanks yes it's something other subscribers have also bought up regarding the longevity of the Pumping Iron era crew.
      I think it shows - 1) there's a level of safe use in regards to anabolics as long as that use is intermittent and trending towards the level of sane dosages.
      2) Early retirement - 30 was considered old among these guys, and many were out of the game by that ripe old age except for brief periodic comebacks here and there. (Corney, nubret, Robinson, Ferrigno etc)
      If the dosage makes the poison, as the saying goes, then there's that line you can walk where one can use the drugs without the drugs using you.

    I think, initially, he didn't - like when he competed against Steve Reeves in that MR UNIVERSE
    BUT, within 5 years, Reg Park's physique BLEW U - he gained a lot of muscle mass and strength.
    I think that Reg, like Bill Pearl, was initially 'Clean' for his first MR UNIVERSE win, but, in the 1960's (possible late 1950s), as they became more available, that he used them.

It's related with Hal Connelly due to his disabled arm and the Americans kept it secret until around mid 1960s from which it spread. It didn't come to soviet weightlifting until 1968/69 and the official doping program started in the 70s. I don't know if he is telling the truth or if it's reliable information(could all just be rumours) but if you look at the lifts Zeigler's story doesn't check out considering the American weightlifting athletes made much better improvements in the 50s than the USSR did. If the USSR was using it, the effects were very poor until it was official and you can see it in 1971 when all the lifts jumped by like 10-20% across all weight classes for them. I'm just curious where the 40s statement comes from? I'm sure plenty of people experimented on all sides with everything back then but I highly doubt any of it mattered in terms of actual performance.

      @@runix2189 road-trippiing at the moment so will look my resources up later but I remember Yessalis et al (History of Doping) mentioned systematic doping of stimulants in the 40s by the Soviets - definitive use in early 50s by Soviet Weightlifters as witnessed by Ziegler who, seeing the catheterized athletes, was motivated to develop dianabol with less harsh, androgenic side effects. I'm pretty sure it was Randy Roach who also mentioned doping (methyl testosterone) usage by the Soviets in the 40s, but not carrying those books at the moment. I used a range of resources, so it's difficult to remember the exact ones - but will dig them up and get back to you when I can

    I’m not totally convinced of their “morally neutral” status back in the day. As you said; back when testosterone was first synthesized in the 1930s, they knew what testosterone was responsible for.
    Supposedly it’s up in the air if any roids were used with any significance in bodybuilding and sports during the 30s, 40s, and 50s.
    But we know for sure 100% that steroids were being widely used in the 60s…
    If they were so morally benign, why would we the steroid use never mentioned in any bodybuilding magazines?
    It was an insider secret to trick people into thinking that all was needed was buying protein, supplements, and workout programs would make you look like the guys on the magazine cover one day… while leaving out probably the biggest contributor to how they looked that way.
    This was clearly the mindset then. Don’t tell people about the pharmaceutical drugs these bodybuilders are taking or else they won’t buy our magazines and supplements.
    If that was the thinking in the 60s and 70s, why would it not be the thinking in the 40s and 50s?
    While people like Leroy Colbert, Reg park, and Steve reeves sound very convincing… there’s no way for us to know if the people who ran the bodybuilding companies back then told them to never talk about the drugs they use

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  Год назад

      Did you watch the video? The magazines didn't promote steroids or mention them because they could use the drug using bodybuilders as puppets to sell their supplements. The mags had nothing to gain revealing bodybuilding's "dirty little secret" because they couldn't directly monetize it

      At an earlier point in the video you were giving the impression that if BBs in the 30s/40s/50s were taking gear that the magazines would’ve/should’ve talked about it because they wouldn’t have been seen as inherently morally bad…
      but as I finished watching the video I realized you were just building the narrative.

    Amazing vintage footage. I've never taken steroids but body-building without steroids just doesn't work. The two are married. If steroids didn't exist body-building wouldn't exist. It would of died out before it began. Think about it, various sports have existed for thousands of years, Running, shot put, boxing, wrestling, horse riding, javelin, Physique contests were frst held in the 30s. and were combined with weight lifting competitions. By the time body-building contests were held on their own steroids were already rampant amongst body-builders. I don't think body-building would of lasted as the natural Physiques just aren't impressive enough to maintain enough interest amongst fans. Steroids give bodybuilders that quality look where the guys look impressive in all the different poses. They preserve muscle while dieting. How would Arnold look in the mantis pose or what would Sergio look like in the arms overhead pose without that all important enhancement. It just wouldn't work. Still I think with the right work ethic, genetics and small, safe doses bodybuilders can look amazing without compromising their health. . There has been too many premature deaths amongst bodybuilders, guys dying in their 20, 30s and 40s yet the guys in the seventies look so much better. I mean compare Samir Banout or even lee Haney to Dallas Mcarver or Art Atwood. Samir and lee looked so much more aesthetic and just better, Dallas and Art were way too big and both died young. 26 and 38. It was the quantity and variety of drugs that killed these two guys. The guys from 30 years ago didn't need to become ridiculously huge because the standards were different. The standards need to change.
