Been in cybersecurity for years, the question is not stupid just because you do not understand. Tiktok (and countless other apps) will access your network, they can monitor your traffic the same as your ISP will. Typically big companies like this will collect this data, save it and then use it to personalize ads or content you receive. Congress is worried that in Tiktok's case, they are collecting this data and then selling it back to the Chinese government. That is essentially the question he is asking.
@@newdawnfades263you didn’t understand the question he asked. But he could of phrase it better. He was asking IF tiktok could access other devices connected to the same wifi network. "Can it connect to other devices on the network?" is the literal point of having a network is to connect devices. It's like asking if cars can use roads to drive to other places? Sometimes being asked something so obvious can throw you because you're trying to work out what the real question is@@itsir2u
Well, the comments are all wrong. The question is very very legitimate. For instance, Google Maps detects (doesn't connect) to multiple nearby WiFi signals to triangulate it's location in indoor settings like malls, to inform Google Ads if someone has converted from the ads, which is obviously not anything to do with the intended use of the app. The fact he is elite level dodging, and using "We don't do anything outside normal industry norms" answer suggests that they may indeed be getting more than just internet from the WiFi network, it might be getting data on the network devices and potentially monitoring traffic.

Actually I don’t find it dumb because if you have an app that can see and gather information of all the devices connected in your local network, potentially that company could get access to the devices in your network, if they have malicious intentions.
@@luigitavarezklk07You're not fully understanding the tech, so your logic doesn't work. Do many apps have the ability to talk to multiple devices on the same wifi? When permission is granted by the user, yes. When permission isn't granted by the user, no.
The bigger problem is just apps logging wifi signal strengths around you to see where you are at any given time compared to other users of the app. This data can be used to create a relational profile between you and people around you. These companies know more about the people that you surround yourself with than you do :D
@@JaYEBuLL "when permission is granted by the user, yes" Well if permission isn't granted, then you don't get to use the app. Most apps are like this, you give consent at installation. @@alexmarin3254 oh I get it completely. But the guy answered the same questions worded slightly differently from nearly everyone who talked. It was ridiculous after a certain point.
@@alexmarin3254oh the irony of that statement.

@@copysamurai but he didn't answer the question. He acted like he didn't understand what he was asking, like it was a stupid question. He did it so well that he fooled everyone watching. He was very obviously asking if tiktok will get information from other devices on your network when YOU log into it on your phone. That's what he meant by network, the other devices on the network.
Then, listen to the answer, he "didn't know"? Bs, he knew. The answer is yes, he knows it's yes. He didn't ask if what they do is standard for the industry either, that's not what they're there to talk about.
Mr. Chew, can Tik Tok access the few brain cells I have left from hanging around with my MAGA buddies?
Is he okay? He sounds extremely confused, American congress is such a joke.
Your kindergarten teacher: there are no dumb questions
This man:
Just remember there a lot in US congress
In ma phone i clicked on acceptin tiktok cookies, it ain't delivered yet.
There are absolutely stupid questions with obvious answers, like "Did any US congressmen go to school?"
"Mr. Chew, if I increase my phone volume, will my music be louder?"
"Mr. Chew if I use incognito mode on Google will I become invincible?"
"Mr Chew in order to navigate in your platform, do i really need a boat?"
Why are technologically deficient people in charge of a tech case?
because this way it looks like they are actually investigating, but in the process they act stupid and ask stupid questions so the real issue is never addressed...they preffer to look stupid than evil, and it works!
If it is such a dumb question, why can’t it be answered easily?
@@itsir2uThat is also a very stupid question.
@@itsir2u because theoretically any aplication that connects to wi-fi can access other devices on the same network but tik tok has no use connecting to other devices on the local network (doing that would have multiple complications and would depend on which other type of devices are connected) so the question itself is stupid.
"Can it connect to other devices on the network?" is the literal point of having a network is to connect devices. It's like asking if cars can use roads to drive to other places? Sometimes being asked something so obvious can throw you because you're trying to work out what the real question is@@itsir2u
Mr. Chew, is it recommended that I use oven gloves when turning on the hotspot?
This is underrated
THIS ONE KILLED ME OMGGGGG
Ke-ke-ke.

Single handedly the most stupid question I've ever heard anyone ask
"Mr. Chew, is social media social?"
Thank you all in the comments. I really needed this laugh today
🤓🤓🤓
Peace out brotha, it will get better.
@@saernst and its not even that hard for tic tok to gather an collect info on devices connected on the same network. Unless they have a firewall etc. And even if they arnt gathering this data ( no way they arnt). They app is self is a cyber weapon. They could easily convince many users I ceritain demographics to protest or cause chaos.

Do they ask this to Microsoft Bill Gates 😂😂😂
Mr. Chew, how long have you known Wi Fi personally as a friend?
Hahaha 😂😂😂
Would've been a good question if the Senator knew what he was asking.
Still a dumb question a home wifi lets devices communicate with eachother its totally normal u still gotta request and accept connections tho.
The notion of it being beyond the industry norms doesn't mean it isn't doing things it's not supposed to. The industry norm could be stealing consumers data. So just because every other company does it, doesn't mean it's right.
The question is actually valid, the congressman just didn't phrase it correctly because he doesn't fully understand what he is asking.
M. Chew: No, wrong product. That would be Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

I love when Congressmen are trying to understand technology. And they are trying to make laws. They should be way more worried about Amazon and Google.
No they are not cos they are American companies, if forced they can have control over their data. They only wanna stomp on Tiktok cos it's chinese.

What's sad is that you haven't recognized these televised events are political theater. Congress comes to their decisions independent of these hearings and the only real purpose they serve is to give the politicians some screen time and the opportunity to grandstand. Asking irrelevant or stupid questions is a common tactic for both saying nothing and feigning ignorance. You, Shou, and the majority of the comment section here missed a fairly basic interrogation tactic. The first question is not a dumb question, it’s actually the opposite. It’s a fairly beginner technique called leading the witness. lawyers do this all of the time. He already knows the answer to the question, he’s just laying the foundation for follow up questions. It’s like a lawyer asking a defendant “so it’s true that you were there at the crime scene last night?” It lays a foundation so the follow up questions he asks will force the tiktok ceo or the defendant to provide very specific or related answers
