+Kassidy Uzumaki Honestly, I feel the same. This movie version was the first interpretation of the Phantom of the Opera I ever saw, so Gerard was the first phantom I saw.
I find this song sad mostly because she didn't betray him at all. She made no promises, so his pain is completely one-sided, which I think adds to how truly lonely he is.
The Phantom didn't love her. He lusted for Christine. And his behavior towards her is pretty much borderlines on sociopathic stalking. Heck, he's gone as far by threatening to kill everybody Christine loves so he can have her all to himself and keep her as a trophy.
@@kryptonianpowersI don’t think that was the interpretation of the film. We see in the end, after she died in her old age, he was still there. Raul finds his black rose on her grave. That’s not how lust works, love is the one feeling that will get you to be this stuck on someone your entire life.
@@kryptonianpowers If it was purely lust, he wouldn't have let her go in the end to be with Raoul. Did we watch the same film? He knew that she deserved better, so he let her go... It was love, just in a very twisted way. But how can you blame him? All he ever knew was twisted anyway.

This is why Gerald is my favourite Phantom. He put so much emotion in this scene, and when he is yelling at the end, it is so powerful. This is my favourite part of the whole film, sung by my favourite Phantom.

I have major respect for all the phantoms but Gerard is still my favorite. I just prefer the deeper more rock voice he has. @@cfssuperhero, Webber actually chose Gerard Butler because he had more of a rock'n'roll style of singing. ALW wanted the Phantom in the movie to be more edgy. There is such emotion when Gerard is singing and acting. He isn't even a professional yet he is able to master the song and put so much passion and heartbreak. He will forever be my phantom and the sequel didn't happen. Nope
In my opinion, people are like Jenga towers and there are two types of them. There's the people who have not had any blocks removed, like Raoul and Christine. They are emotionally stable, like the tower, and removing one or two of their blocks won't do anything. Then there's people like the Phantom who, like the Jenga tower have had too many blocks removed from their life, and as if that's not enough, those removed blocks are piled on top of them and they feel like all their hardships are their fault only. They are so emotionally unstable that removing one more block will make them collapse and they need the missing blocks to be filled in if they are to end their inner turmoil.
The Phantom of the Opera by Gerald Butler & Emma Rossum came out when I was just 9. My dad brought it home & my little heart fell so deeply in love with every bit of it. Now, I'm 27 and it is still & would always be my favorite movie in the entire world. I can't put into words how every thing about it just makes my soul take flight!
He may not be the best singer, but he does a great job of showing and portraying his emotion and how hurt he is. That is why he is scary at times, because you believe hey will do anything for Christine and that’s why you pity him. He isn’t the greatest singer but he is the definition of “phantom”
The issue is that people are not realising this is a movie, which is a completely different performance style than a musical. If you put a musical actor in a movie like this it'd be a massive flop.
@@youandijmh7998 Finally someone said it....Composer Webber met a lot of great singers in his life, but as Broadway actors, they wouldn’t have been brilliant for a movie. Finally someone understands this..... Well, fans will always love his phantom, because he's the most emotional. And haters always hate, because they can't accept a different style. So for a movie, Gerard Butler was a fantastic choice. I personally find Gerard's renditions to be really heartfelt - something I do not detect in the stage performers ( their acting is theatrical and their singing is dramatic). Of course, everyone who played the Phantom is good at his artistic skills, but Gerard was the one who gave expression, passion, love and life to the Phantom... For me his acting is the best in this role!
I felt chills when Erik sang at the crescendo. I really love Gerard Butler's acting here, and his singing voice too, even though it's not as top tier as the ones from Broadway. But he puts the anger and the sadness in it, and it sounds really good! Also, him climbing onto the angel statue is like a reference to him being called the "angel of music".
It's not like watching the woman you love swearing her love to someone else is bad enough, but of course they had to do it in a song so it could get stuck in your head and hunt you for all the years to come...
When he looks up to the sky on that last angry bit, for me, it's almost like he feels that not even Christine wants him, and the stars and snow are the only ones that listen to him, and the only outlet for his anger. He's been lonely enough, and overhearing that song where Christine promises her love to another is enough to make the remaining shards of his broken heart crumble into dust.
Gerard Butler is the better phantom because in a movie the acting is more important than the singing. A movie captures the emotions and the facial expressions much more intimately than a stage opera. True he is not a pure opera singer like Wilkinson and Crawford, but he portrays the existential anguish of the phantom better in his acting and singing.
Of all of the phantoms... people always hate it when I say Gerard is my favorite. He is so powerful in his emotional delivery... and the fact that andrew loyd webber heard him and yanked him into the roll is BEAUTIFUL

So I know in the book he is an abusive alcoholic, but I can't help but fall in love with Erik. Perhaps it's because I'm too empathetic or I can see how hard he is trying to win Christine over (although I *do* think he's confused obsession with love). You can see his heart break in this scene. It makes me cry. I am crying *now*. I feel for him.
To me that's too convenient. After 20 years of fans complaining for some reason that she should've chosen her stalker rather than the man who could've offered her a healthy relationship where she's more than just a voice then the writers suddenly make him an alcoholic? To me that feels too much like just giving the audience what they want rather than thinking about if it makes sense to the actual story. @@fulltimehater6250
When I listen to this, I am literally moved, and I'm not even using this phrase as a figure of speech. I actually felt something flutter inside me when Erik starts weeping.
Heartbreaking scene. The phantom seeing true love play out, and it being through Christine adds to the pain; he yearned for love all his life and used his genius to channel his pain, loneliness, passion, and creativity. He grew obsessed and attached to Christine because she was his voice and beauty to the world and his only hope for love; he develops an entitlement that is self-grown and a pride and need for control. Watching Christine and Raoul naturally, purely, effortlessly, and gently love each other is just like pouring acid on his wound; he grows even more psychotic.
Went to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Stranahan theater recently. Excellent excellent show. I love the movie here with Gerard tho (I absolutely LOVED him as the Phantom, he played the part very well and was so full of emotion the entire film. Also, hot ^//^); this scene conveys exactly how much he cared for and loved Christine. When he picks up the rose and begins to sing in such a beautiful and sad tone, it just breaks my heart after he hears them singing together in the background, and he's so upset. It's absolutely heartbreaking that society had to view him as a 'monster', when he had the biggest heart of them all. :,(
I was first obsessed with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEA over 30 years ago and I stil love it! Read the book, saw the performance live And love the movie remake! The phantom of the opera for me is a classic in my heart
I prefer the french version, not because it’s my language but the french version it’s so much better. At 2:30, in the french version, the phantom say « Le malheur vous saisira bientôt! Vous, c’est le fantôme qu’il vous, faut! » which means « The misfortune will soon seize you! You, It is the ghost whom you, need! » but still, i really love Gerard Butler voice.
October 2024. This film moved me so deeply. I watched it several times in the cinema. Gerard was and is the Phantom, brooding sexuality, raw maleness. Broke my heart and the music is divine. I discovered the song "no one was listening" this year. Oh why did they leave it out? It explains the whole essence of Erik. Tragic. Brilliant!!!!
By far my favorite scene of the film due to the depth of passion the phantom expresses toward Christine. Although at some parts of the film, the phantom may act out of line, this empathetic moment allows the audience to relate to the pain he feels.
For anybody who says the singing is bad in this movie, while it's not up to par with the stage production, I believe that everyone in the cast of the movie did absolutely fantastic. The two playing Christine and Raoul are fantastic and Gerard does a great job knowing that he's not a singer
I love how whenever a Movie version of a song pops up I see all the love people have for Gerard... Then when I go to literally any other version of the song people hate Gerard Butler...
Or maybe it's in his head. He can't stop thinking of those lines and, no matter how hard he tries, it won't go out of his head. It stays. It haunts his mind till he is driven to that last, far louder line. It shatters his heart until it has turned to dust.
According to the books, he helped build the opera house and designed it to echo to him. Also in the book he's older, more abusive, more unstable, and not at all a decent human unlike this one where he is mostly just a lonely isolated man with little to no healthy role models to teach him how to be kind or loving.
I feel like the phantom is literally a dark shadow in Christine’s life. I don’t blame Christine for being scared of him. If I was in her shoes I’d be scared too.
All I ask of you, this song its my feeling, too. My heart belong to you , your heart belong to me., my sweetie Phantom, you are my everything , Im yours ,Gerard Butler. ❤️ ❤
This is my favorite scene in the whole show, but even when I've seen it live it never really gave me chills like the movie does. Even with the obvious fake crying and scream-singing, Gerard really brings a level of sympathy to the Phantom that I've never seen on stage. I agree that the character is completely deranged and you can certainly play him *only* that way, but the over-the-top dramatic sad man angle makes it so much more fun.
Anywhere you go, let me go too Love me, that's all I ask of you [Phantom] ( All I Ask Of You Reprise) I gave you my music, made your song take wing. Amazing! Love this version so much! He did amazing! I don’t know why this came to my mind, but when he ran up and climbed the statue I thought of Tom riddle right before he made the horocoxs. Like a last betrayal he couldn’t stand and he came up with the name Voldemort and vowed to be all he could be!
If you have seen the musical, you will notice how the camera drops near the end almost like paying tribute to the chandelier crashing in the actual stage production at the end of the first act.

Can we all admit that the panning out of the camera and the dizzying drop is just genius in matching the tone of the music?
dem feels.. >.< oh Gerard, you are the best Phantom ever!!
When I saw this part live on Broadway I cried my eyes out because Erik bby youre breaking my heart. He just loves her so much.
When Raoul sings to her in the first 0:13 seconds I immediately get tears in my eyes. 🥲 Soooooooo beautiful! I love his voice!
I just really want to jump into the screen and give him a big hug😇 and I feel so bad for him even though he's just acting😉
» but still, i really love Gerard Butler voice.
my God... he is a Fantastic phantom!
i love phantom of the opera i feel so bad for him i cried.
so beautiful man tears!!
amazing movie of this AMAZING musical and amazing story
October 2024. This film moved me so deeply. I watched it several times in the cinema. Gerard was and is the Phantom, brooding sexuality, raw maleness. Broke my heart and the music is divine. I discovered the song "no one was listening" this year. Oh why did they leave it out? It explains the whole essence of Erik. Tragic. Brilliant!!!!
Noooo Erik darling, dont cry.. nononono she left his rose. no omg that background singing by Christine and Roaul
My name is John Sheehan and think that this is one of the most heartaching scene of scenes in this movie.
Gosh I love how this song ends with that zoom out shot
By far my favorite scene of the film due to the depth of passion the phantom expresses toward Christine. Although at some parts of the film, the phantom may act out of line, this empathetic moment allows the audience to relate to the pain he feels.
She shattered him. Sometimes when you deal with such heartbreak and betrayal you get angry and vengeful. Its not right. Its a sad response
legit tears there, coming out of his nose and everything - impressed
For anybody who says the singing is bad in this movie, while it's not up to par with the stage production, I believe that everyone in the cast of the movie did absolutely fantastic. The two playing Christine and Raoul are fantastic and Gerard does a great job knowing that he's not a singer
this breaks my heart
Breaks my heart every time ..
I felt so sorry for the phantom
The whole change in emotion always gets me
I love how whenever a Movie version of a song pops up I see all the love people have for Gerard... Then when I go to literally any other version of the song people hate Gerard Butler...
Those two are probably a couple floors down already and still the Phantom can hear their voices singing.
Damn son, that's one hell of an ear.
Him crushing the rose is so powerful
IKR. His heart is broken and he tries to hate Christine so that it won't bother him, but deep down, he can't.
@pillypuppy666 I know people aren't totally satisfied with Gerard's vocals, but his Phantom will always be one that makes me cry
the emotion in his voice ;-;
i just love this movie
Poor phantom...my love. I once left a rose in the snow... We are not understood. But we understand each other
this made me cry so hard
0:48 such a beautiful shot - the black of his cape and the red of the rose ❤
The emotion Aghhhh!! It breaks my heart EVERYTIME I hear him sing this! He played/sang this part better than ANY phantom in my opinion
I feel like the phantom is literally a dark shadow in Christine’s life. I don’t blame Christine for being scared of him. If I was in her shoes I’d be scared too.
phantom...I give you all my roses 🌹
no one hears the man screaming from a statue. ok.
Lol
You can't think in such literal terms when watching this lol.
The same director made Batman and Robin. Details are fantastical, for sure
Don’t ruin it lol
Shut up bro
All I ask of you, this song its my feeling, too. My heart belong to you , your heart belong to me., my sweetie Phantom, you are my everything , Im yours ,Gerard Butler. ❤️ ❤
This scene made me sob especially when he softly sings “he was bound to love you…” and then cries 🥹💔✌️
The original beauty and the beast
This is my favorite scene in the whole show, but even when I've seen it live it never really gave me chills like the movie does. Even with the obvious fake crying and scream-singing, Gerard really brings a level of sympathy to the Phantom that I've never seen on stage. I agree that the character is completely deranged and you can certainly play him *only* that way, but the over-the-top dramatic sad man angle makes it so much more fun.
this movie is so nostalgic for me. this was legit my childhood i must have watched this like once a week as a kid 😂
phantom is the best!!!
I fell in love with the Phantom.
Hello, my heart. I love it, my sweetie Phantom.
❤❤
This song made me cry!!!!!!!!!
ohhhh... I want to hug the phantom now.....
Best movie ever
This gives me a chill so unique that nothing can top it.
I can't stop crying, i wish this movie could ended by other way... i wish I was Christine, i would give myself to Erik completely ❤❤🖤
Anywhere you go, let me go too
Love me, that's all I ask of you
[Phantom] ( All I Ask Of You Reprise)
I gave you my music, made your song take wing.
And now, how you've repaid me, denied me and betrayed me.
He was bound to love you, when he heard you sing.
(Sobs)Christine, Christine.
[Raoul & Christine]
Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Say the word and I will follow you
Share each day with me, each night, each morning...
[Phantom]
You will curse the day you did not do!
All that the Phantom asked of you!

my heart broke in that scene
