Mike Threet Appreciate video content! Sorry for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you considered - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (google it)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for mastering guitar scales minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my old buddy Taylor after many years got amazing results with it.
The only teacher that I have found on youtube that doesn't start his videos showing off how cool his licks are. This guy is a true professional and the best teacher out there for someone who just got their first guitar, up to intermediate level.
The most useless thing a guitar teacher can do is spend your training time showing how good they are. The goal is to get the student touching their guitar and learning as much as possible. I may not know a ton of guitar, but I can tell a huge part of the instrument is just muscle memory. Tons of it.
I'm self taught, and the way I learnt how to play scale was by learning the 5 positions of the Major and Minor scales. And then improvisation just came natural.
I agree, practice scales back and forth until you want to vomit from your eye balls; this is VERY important for finger strength/memory. Once you have this then you can improv and it should sound decent, then the more you play/goof around the better it sounds. Chords too early will lead you to the dark side, best to work chords later on IMHO. I wish there was a short cut but there really isn't. Keep strummin' :D
This is very encouraging, I’m 25 and just started. Decent percussionist here but I have very little experience with pitched instruments so it’s great to hear how others are starting off and learn from there :)
originalscottfree that was my problem before, I started a few years back just learning chords and I couldn’t keep it up. Forgot everything I had learned and now I’m starting from scratch again. Never learned scales when I was younger, the fundamentals are so important though!
When you say, self taught, you mean you didn't have a formal teacher, but you learned from everyone and everything around you. Which is what I did as well.
G Issa, the 5 positions are 5 different patterns down the guitar for the key you are playing. Each of the 5 patterns are slightly different. Each pattern starts on second note of the previous pattern. It sounds complicated, but you should learn this to play down the neck. I’m at pattern 3, two more to go😃. Interesting the 5th pattern started where you would start the first minor pentatonic scale. Gives you the major pentatonic scale. Patterns galore on the guitar. Good for brains that see patterns. Cheers
Pleasure to find you Andy! Paul here. I'm a 65 yr old transitioning from acoustic to the Les Paul model you play! What a trip just to learn a scale, bending notes, pick slides, and so much more! This was my first lesson on the Les Paul. Thanks so much for the great instruction!!! 🤠
I dont know if you'll actually read this Andy, but as a beginner,i started searching for pentantonic scales. Not only was described in details, but in those eleven minutes i learned the whole scale and how to play it fast. Subcribed and left a comment to let you know that you're an amazing teacher! Thanks again!
I am 67, bought my first acoustic guitar in July, l was looking for something to do during the Covid-19 quarantine. I really enjoy your teaching method, a big thank you.
I play guitar for little over a year now, I know plenty of chords and have wrote multiple riffs and even one song out of power chords and only now am I beginning to learn scales. Thanks for this, an entire new dimension is opening for me.
Great teacher. 50 yrs old here, second practice session ever, and this is the second vid of yours I'm following after your first vid of I Love Rock n' Roll. Great speed to learn by, and not overwhelming. Much appreciated.
Ex drummer here who always wanted to play guitar. Finally at age 57 I bought a Fender Strat for me and my 12 year old Son to learn on (probably not the best guitar to learn on, but it's a STRAT!!!!!!). After 3 weeks of viewing RUclips beginner lessons, I can honestly say your style of learning and beginner content has produced the best results for me by a long mile. So thank you and I look forward to more great content and ruined finger tips. Keep up the great work it is muchly appreciated. Subbed.
Every other teacher either goes too quickly or talks in music theory terms that are way above beginner level, even if the video is titled for beginners. But I LOVE your speed, how clearly and concisely you break things down, your explanations and encouragements! Extremely thankful for your channel.
Hi Andy,Spent years trying to find ' Just the right teacher and teaching site' flicked from channel to channel on you tube without any real progress. Until now. Your consistent quality teaching has depth and encouragement that even a 50+ guitar beginner can comprehend. In a nut shell your a top bloke with a gift. H
Andy, my thanks to you for your wonderful beginner course, student to teacher. I started last year, and learnt the basics from your videos, which I would practice in my free time. I can say confidently that i have graduated to intermediate level, and am comfortable with barre chords, have good chord progression and changes, and have a decent repertoire of songs up my sleeve for those pleasant evenings. And yes, I'm rewarding myself with a new and better guitar soon!
Andy, I’m amazed at how quickly I’m picking the scales up, this video is absolutely musical gold. You definitely earned another dedicated subscriber here and I will definitely recommend you to any buddy I know who is trying to pick up guitar!
I think it has got to the point where I've nailed the 'F' chord and 'B' chord now and I can play a lot of songs. I can fluently change and land chords but I've lacked in more simple single picking strings to give the song that bit extra. However it's great you uploaded this because I do remember being told scales are essential to learn. They are tedious in learning but so were the chords like 'F'. I am just glad I stuck with this! Thank you Andy, you continue to help me improve my guitar skills weekly, keep it up man.
Hello Andy, I have been watching your videos and learning from them. Learning guitar has remained my lifelong yearning and now it feels you have given me some hope. Thank you sir!
First of all Good Teaching job!, 2nd. It doesn't matter if you 4 or 54, if you have the drive and commitment to learn, you will learn fast. It's all in how hard you want it!
Andy I’ve been dipping in and out of trying to learn guitar with little success for several years. God knows how much I’ve wasted on books and dvds. Within weeks of watching your channel I finally feel like I’m making progress. Thank you so much - your lessons are unique!
I like your teaching, iv been playing for about 12 hours over the past week and can all ready play stand by me, knocking on heavens door and the house of the rising sun and have found your methods very helpful
I just bought a new Epiphone Les Paul studio in ebony. I love this guitar. I used to have an SG special that wasn't as good of a guitar and my learning ability was not as easy as it is with this guitar. I just want to thank you for the lesson and I look forward to many more from you as you are a very good teacher. I'm a new player and I have a lot to learn and at 53 it isn't as easy as it could have been if I had taken it up earlier in life, so it's great to have someone that I can understand with relative ease. Keep it up and I will too. Thanks again Andy
The point of teaching is to show, not to show off - as I see with so many others here on RUclips. Andy, you DO teach! And, loads of love for your sweet spirit. Thank you from deep inside of my heart.
I am totally self taught with the guitar. Probably why I know nothing :D Seriously though, I have been a fan of the Les Paul guitar for years and I have LP copy, but watching your video's, stuff I have picked up over the years seems to suddenly make sense and drop into place. Thank you for your set of plain speaking down to earth video's and making the instrument easier to understand without the mystic some folk seem to surround it with. Many thanks.
Andy, thank you so much! You are the best! I have watched other videos on how to play chords and what not, but no one takes the time to show scales the right way. I've already got the first scale in this video down and it took me 15 minutes. Now back to practicing!
Thanks for explaining the meaning of the words as well, super helpful as a non-native speaker. I know all the music "jargon" like scales and chords blabla in my own language but sometimes struggle to translate while also practicing. So the little addition of saying "scale is a sequence of notes" is very helpful!
Thanks Andy, appreciate that your'e more into teaching than showing how well you can play. Beginnings are difficult but this exercise is perfect for me. Great job !
I haven't learning instruments in years, and while I have a guitar, I didn't know where to start, so I figured scales would be great, but I had no idea which one. I went to another video, but it was far too technical, given I'm a complete novice. This really allowed me to just jump in with my guitar, and begin learning which notes were which organically. Thanks!
You're really great at explaining things in a clear and concise manner. I'm trying hard to get my fingers to cooperate with knowledge in my head. I'm 37 and finally learning guitar. Why didn't I start 25 years ago? So much wasted time...
I'm a beginner at guitar and I'm not very good with scales and creating riffs with them. You explained this really well and it helped a lot, great video!
E Minor Pentatonic Scale Baby! Unbelievable how much it helps you. I was listening to Suzie Q the other.. and I tried to play it a bit...without tabs just listening on the radio and wow.. it was E Minor Pentatonic Scale (well ok most of it). Thanks Andy!
yah know, I started playing guitar 6 years ago, and the skills that I learned from Andy's videos still help me to this day. If you are just starting out playing guitar I really suggest going through the lessons on his channel and his website, they are an amazing resource.
Great lesson as always Andy. I just got my first electric guitar a week back and today is my 4th day straight on your lessons. Previous 3 days have learnt some basic riffs from you such as James Bond Theme. Today is my fourth day straight with you and learnt this scale and yes I can play 4 times in a row up and down. 🤗 Thank you so much! You are my go to channel to learn guitar. Very easy to follow and straight to the point. Thank you!!
I cant thank you enough for making this series, i was struggling with my guitar learning, now im actually having fun and learning, thank you very much, subscribed. @Andy Guitar
Thank you man. I've played 8 years and always avoided learning my scales. You are very thorough with your explanations. It's very helpful since I know nothing of scales what so ever. I like, the fact that you explain the meaning of pent and tonic too. Youre very informative and you're super knowledgeable.
I am intermediate now, but loved this. I didn’t know that Riff was for rhythm, and I didn’t know that low e to d strings were usually used for rhythm and that g to high e were mostly lead. Thanks for the new perspective Andy.👍😘
I've been playing just for fun (I'm not good. Not even decent), checked out many videos, downloaded Yousician and THIS is the first video that really resonated with me. I feel like I'm understanding the subtleties of the guitar just doing this Em pentatonic scale. Thank you!!!! I didn't even know I wanted to learn pentatonic scales! Thank you, Andy!
Andy your video rocks, I have learned a decent number of chords and was looking to start learning scales for riffs but could not understand what other videos were trying to explain... (they talk like I know what they're talking about). your video has been cristal clear to me.. thanks a bunch.. liked and subscribed!
You are the best teacher ever i seen in you tube, and im trying to learn scales from past two years by watching you tube, all boaring and i gave up learning, but when i see your this video lesson, i feel very confidence and i started to learn again, thank you sir and god bless you..
Awesome tutorial, Andy! Been drumming for 6 years now and decided I want to learn other instruments, too! You're very easy to follow and listen to, getting your point across without filling our heads with useless jargon. You sound fairly local to me (Greater Manchester), are you in a band or gigging solo? Thanks for the help!
Andy, great tutorials you are one of the best teachers out there... Would you consider posting (showing) the notes of the riffs so that we don't have to keep rewinding the video. Thanks for all the great videos. Tony
This is a new comment (2018) on an older video (2014) BUT... you made playing this scale fun. I have avoided learning them because I thought they were hard but nope... you made it seem easy. Thanks so much for that Andy!
Thanks for this bro. I just picked my guitar up again after long time because i just felt so shitty about my playing and now i have to completely re learn everything and this really helped. Subbed!
This lesson is fantastic, I am a beginner to guitar and this helped me out so much, and I love the black keys so its cool to be able to play Lonely Boy! Thanks so much!
Very helpful! I've taught myself all the major chords but I realized I didn't actually know any scales, so this is a helpful video, I picked it up faster than expected (and I think scales are fun actually) subscribed and looking forward to learning more from your other videos!
I’ve been playing guitar for roughly 2 years now self-taught, but never actually learned basic scales on it, just chords. As a cellist, I’m used to major and minor scales and am new to the whole pentatonic thing. Isn’t it just a major scale without the 4th and 7th? I’m not planning on getting a guitar teacher and i’m trying to learn it on my own. I do think I’ve made a lot faster progress compared to on the cello. I would consider myself and intermediate to early advanced level cellist, and have been playing the instrument for 8 years. I’m 15, so I do have many years to master it and i go to an arts school as a music major, so that has helped. I take string theory, orchestra, and am planning on taking music theory next year. Thanks for the tutorial and tips, I’ll make sure to practice them!
Great video! I was listening to Goats Head Soup vinyl last night, doing these scales this morning and found Dancing With Mr D going down from the low E 🙌
Thank you Andy!!! I have only watched one of your videos, but I can tell that I will be learning alot from you. You have excellent teaching skills! I am subscribed to your channel now and will definitely be watching your videos over and over! Just what I needed! Thank you for your time and dedication to helping others. It's a blessing!
Congratulations!! You are the 1 millionth video on you tube to teach the pentatonic scale excruciatingly slowly ... and also now the 1 millionth person that has decided to be a guitar teacher and teach exactly the same stuff as everyone else .. but not quite as well done . Congrats... keep up the good work
Was told it would help to learn E minor scale in order to help learn Enter Sandman, seems i found the perfect video and now ill be learning an extra 10 riffs :) Great Vid man subbed.
Very good with articulating which frets and strings you are playing. Teaching us by teaching in a manner that is straight to the point.... I like it!!! Lol.
Hey up Andy. Ive just subbed to your channel. I started playing about ten years ago but gave up so here i am starting all over again. Looking forward to your videos mate. Thank you.
Hey Andy Guitar, I am 67 years old and just started learning guitar. Thank you for what you are doing.

A squished grape How to prove somebody's point 101
Mike Threet Good luck learning! I hope you've come far learning.
dude wtf

Totally agree with that 👍
expat2010 I was thinking the same thing, wish he lived around the corner....
I only got my guitar 3 weeks ago for school and i can already play some pretty cool songs that i like.
i like it when they show off tho

Hi Andy I’ve just started playing guitar at 62 I have always wanted to play guitar so I brought one I’m hooked on your teaching thank you
Hey andy guitar, you are legit the only teacher on youtube that understands that people can be complete beginners. I appreciate you more than you know
Every other teacher either goes too quickly or talks in music theory terms that are way above beginner level, even if the video is titled for beginners. But I LOVE your speed, how clearly and concisely you break things down, your explanations and encouragements! Extremely thankful for your channel.

We are never to old to learn. I'm 72. More of a vocalist than a guitarist. Still like to have a play when the mood takes me.
Thanks. Terry

Holy shit! David De Gea can play guitar.
Thanks Andy good teaching..helps us learning and having guitar fun...
Thanks, didn't realise that learning scales helped this much because I just jumped into songs this makes it so much easier.
you are a natural teacher, so much patience
Andy, great tutorials you are one of the best teachers out there...
Would you consider posting (showing) the notes of the riffs so that we don't have to keep rewinding the video.
Thanks for all the great videos.
Tony
You are one of if not the best guitar teacher on you tube 👍
This is a new comment (2018) on an older video (2014) BUT... you made playing this scale fun. I have avoided learning them because I thought they were hard but nope... you made it seem easy. Thanks so much for that Andy!
You're such a good teacher!! I am a beginner guitar player and find your videos so helpful! Thank you!! :)
Hi Andy..nice clear explanation and easy to follow lesson so that even older newcomers to electric guitar can make progress
Thanks for this bro. I just picked my guitar up again after long time because i just felt so shitty about my playing and now i have to completely re learn everything and this really helped. Subbed!
Well described and explained. I found it most interesting and will pass on to my learning grandson. Many thanks.
Thanks for the tutorial and tips, I’ll make sure to practice them!
this guy is a good teacher thanks for the lesson. cheers.
It's a blessing!
this is the first video that actually helped me learn these scales, thanks man :)
Excellent lesson and explanation. Great idea separating the E A D rhythm riff strings from the G B E lead riff strings.
A great instructional lesson. One thing I would add would be to use alternate picking straight from the word go.
