Just finished the ten day lesson and now I'm here! So much great advise for free and in actually learning to play for real, just using RUclips. Many many thanks to Andy G!
Thank you!!! I have played piano since I was in grade school, I'm now 52. My mother bought the Keith Urban guitar & cd package thinking it would be easy for me to pick up. I have spent the past 3 yrs trying to find middle C & a relationship to the piano so I could make sense of it. My son has friends that "play" guitar but they looked at me like I had 2 heads when I asked where middle C was. Now maybe I can learn how to play this thing. THANK YOU AGAIN.
Great lesson! I wish you had been my music teacher back in secondary school (mine used to throw chairs at us when we got it wrong & it put me off learning guitar!). I've just started again 30 years later & although the principles of music theory was something I always struggled with, the way you teach it all makes sense to me now. Many thanks Andy!
It would help if there were numbers or dots in the diagrams to seee which frets are those. Of course, we need to follow the explanation than becomes clear, but a visible TAB is internationally readable.
In fact, the diagram is correct, it should not be flipped. What should be flipped is the camera vision, because the TABs are written in a way of the vision from the guitarrist looking from up to the fretboard. sorry if it became a bit confuse this explanation. 😅 Thanks Andy for those valuable lessons.
Lovely video content! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Rozardner Inspiring Chord Reality (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing exclusive product for how to play guitar scales minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.
Andy...love your videos. You and Justin and Marty Schwartz should get together and have a go at it. You 3 are my favorite and ONLY teachers. Love from Michigan.
Great video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (search on google)? It is a great exclusive guide for mastering guitar scales minus the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate finally got great success with it.
YAY! Thanks to you I can now play the A and Am pentatonic! The only thing is that my vision gets blurry while playing the A scale because of everything being so closed to each other so I mostly just rely on my ears lol
am I the only person who likes practicing scales? I find it’s nice to kinda put on a metronome and just like feel the notes or whatever. It’s weirdly relaxing
Oh Andy, this is so confusing for me! I'm a beginner, up to day 4 of your beginner guitar series. I will watch this video repeatedly till I digest what you are teaching here.
Hi Andy, great explanation video, thank you. I've watched a number of videos to help understand scales but yours always provide a 'eureka' moment where it just clicks. I've made massive progress in the couple of weeks I've been using your training vids. Thank you again.
@@recoveringsam8675In my case it was when he changed to the guitar scales, all of a sudden nothing more makes sense. I cant even follow a logic between his finger and the picture.
Thank you so much Andy. I already knew the scales and positions but couldn't figure why the Aminor pentatonic was played on the A note. Admittedly silly but was thinking Am chord and not Minor pentatonic. ( I do get ahead of myself ) Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. When I saw your diagram and heard your voice it just clicked. Respect brother! Also very, very funny mate.
But i don't understand how to use knowing the scales. How are they applied musically? What keywords do i use in searches to see examples of application? I mean, it's easy to find the scales, but not how to apply them.
It confuses me to look at the picture of the scale compared to the video. It appears to be upside down and backwards. I get it. But it hurts my brain! Lol
Because that is starting it over again. Its actually 7 notes. The 8th note is the same as the first note. The major scale is (as the Sound of Music teaches us) DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, and TI. Then back to DO starting it over again.
Andy, That scale you just showed as positionn1 you showed it starting at the 5th fret A, But on your online course you showed it starting at The 3d fret at G, Its very confusing.
Do you have any advice for using the correct fingers for the correct frets? My ring finger is always wanting to take over for my little finger on the higher notes because it’s unusual haha
Cool video.. But i am wondering how do these pattern form? Like is there any algorithms behind the positions i am playing for major/minor/ pentatonic scales? It would be great if anyone could explain it!
What I really hate in all these videos they demonstrate the same box starting in th 5th fret yes I get it but what about the rest all the frets in all the guitar I get the 5th fret but what else please explain!
Andy- im a bit confused, why is that extra note (high e, fourth finger) shown, that would be the start of the third octave i guess? 8 note scales but 17 notes shown?
Hey Andy :) I don't quite understand why you didn't have the last note on the 7th fret, high E in the major scale? :) According to the diagram you showed in the video, on the high E, you should be playing 3 notes? Have I missed something or? :) - Btw, love your videos, you're a great teacher ! Respect from Denmark!
I'm not sure, but maybe your confusing the 3 notes per string method (7 positions) where Andy is using the 5 position method. I'm confused too if I'm honest :-)
Tim Nim Anderson Bit of a pity that Andy has not answered your question which I think is valid. There are 3 notes in diagram on high E string but he only plays 2.
Hi Tim! Only just seen this sorry, but to answer for the benefit of anyone else who reads this; In my demo I played to the octave root note on the high E string. Including the 3rd note on the high E would go past the octave, which isn't how i advise beginners learn it. Learn this scale root to root then add the other notes to really understand the octaves in it. Just my advice, practice however you want!
9:26 major scale
6:00 Minor scale
These are just for my self, for practising. Thanks
Gone done a feaces
@@KillerKlous Excuse me?
Can i use?
@@xxabudxx1 lol. Of course! Happy practising!
Thanks for this lol
I've been to so many guitar mentors so many youtube videos but i always end up here with your videos. You're my ultimate teacher. God bless sir
FINALLY!! this is the first video i've found that actually explains it in a way that is straight to the point and easy to understand. THANK YOU!!!
Wow I'm glad somebody got it, Im baffled

It would help to flip the diagrams so they show the same view as the real fretboard. I like your teaching style very much. Thank you
Thanks for this 😂 I was really confused at first xP

I agree entirely with you!
Andy is by far my favourite guitar teacher. Ive stuck with him and glad i have.

The only thing is that my vision gets blurry while playing the A scale because of everything being so closed to each other so I mostly just rely on my ears lol
Cheers mate, being playing a while but never really understood the scales. Great tutor
Andy I'm learning bass so it's a little different to me but you are so patient. 😀
Hello Andy I'm from Kolkata,India. I love your guitar theory lessons.

Great lesson. The accent makes it so much better.

Sweet and I do love learning scales. They allow me to improv.
Oh Andy, this is so confusing for me! I'm a beginner, up to day 4 of your beginner guitar series. I will watch this video repeatedly till I digest what you are teaching here.
Your the best teacher I have found on line
The last dot on the first chord is the re-start of the scale for the third time, is a B note in the case of the A major scale.
out of the hundreds of videos I have watched trying to understand scales, I finally got it after watching this video!!!
Didn't realise I already know this, but not the name. Thank you Andy 👏😀👍
Another great video, Andy!
Hi there Rip Hunter from "Legends of Tomorrow". My name is Rock Thunder from "Yesterday never Dies". Nice to meet ya!
Now it makes sense, nice one dude
Nice,slow & patient

Edit:anyone 2019?
I'm still here :) 🎸
had a worth time here, tks bro
Great stuff…Thank you! So to sum up, what I hear you saying is the Minor Pentatonic Scale is Lennon and the Major Scale is McCartney. Check!
Andy thanks for that! Your really good st explaining the scales!! Thanks so much mate
Very nice and simple but what happened to the last note on the 7th fret of the high E???
Great lesson! That’s what I was looking for. Thank you 🙏 🎶🎸
No worries

Ridiculous

Two great scales to start with on guitar!
Largely the only two you'll ever need- best of luck!!
you're awesome andy.
but...but I like practicing scales
Chum Buck me two
Young Warrior two

Damn it's true you're RORY WILLIAMS from Doctor Who series!
thanks for all these lessons.. i wil learn it soon
Which part of the black and white box with dots is the low E , closer to Andy's head and which is the high E ,closer to the floor ?
But i don't understand how to use knowing the scales. How are they applied musically? What keywords do i use in searches to see examples of application? I mean, it's easy to find the scales, but not how to apply them.
Thank you! I'm a beginner and this is very helpful
thank you Andy!
It confuses me to look at the picture of the scale compared to the video. It appears to be upside down and backwards. I get it. But it hurts my brain! Lol
Thank you! Great channel!
i really love your channel
why do you end your major scale on the middle finger when the diagram shows it ends on pinky?
I have a question the A is a Minor and Major scale?
Thank you for this very interesting and pleasant lesson.
I have a question.can we mix scales??🤔🤔🤔
is this the main Shape or position for Major pentatonic scales ? how can we make extension from this position? please explain me. really important 🙏🙏
How do you take these scales and incorporate them into music? Can anyone explain?
I've seen many explanations about those scales, but I still have the same question as you do.
Why doesn't he play the last spot that's shown in the picture for the A Major scale?
Because that is starting it over again. Its actually 7 notes. The 8th note is the same as the first note. The major scale is (as the Sound of Music teaches us) DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, and TI. Then back to DO starting it over again.
Andy, That scale you just showed as positionn1 you showed it starting at the 5th fret A, But on your online course you showed it starting at The 3d fret at G, Its very confusing.
thanks for the lesson..very clear!
So does a scale is the map for a melody ?
amazing video
Thanks Big C! 👊🎸
Please upload major and minor scales lesson
Do you have any advice for using the correct fingers for the correct frets? My ring finger is always wanting to take over for my little finger on the higher notes because it’s unusual haha
I have important question. With chords, when playing say Cminor7 do i use the minor pentatonic? Sorry if this sounds dumb.
A beginner guitarist here and a self study student, just have one question; what are the purpose of scales
You can cover the lead singer from Marillion
Hello Andy, I like your Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy album cover from The Who behind you. Thanks for the lesson , thumb up!
Gilles Genete do you see a butt
Does that mean that if you start for example on the note d on the piano and play only the white keys to the octave d, you're playing d Dorian ?
Simo Salojärvi That is EXACTLY right 👌
Now I can do this what should I work on???
great video mate. you should do some piano lesson videos, especially songs where you can incorporate the guitar.
Cheers mate!
Cool video.. But i am wondering how do these pattern form? Like is there any algorithms behind the positions i am playing for major/minor/ pentatonic scales? It would be great if anyone could explain it!
At minute 4 he mentions Am note, I think he means Am chord... Which has a root on the A note.
Ever wonder why you’ve never seen rip hunter and Andy in the same place at the same time..? 😳
You have put half of the video you just explained the whole theory bro thanks.😅
Thanks for the info.
Yea
I didn’t think about it till you said it.. 😂😂 stopped for a Sec to think about it..

Brilliant! This is so useful and explained so well. Thanks very much for the lesson!
What I really hate in all these videos they demonstrate the same box starting in th 5th fret yes I get it but what about the rest all the frets in all the guitar I get the 5th fret but what else please explain!
Thanks a lot
Just found you Great vid scales made understandable ................... subscribed liked and will be back!
Brilliant
I get the major scale has two octives but why does the pentatonic have 12 notes? Why isn't it 10?
There are actually 15, commonly all are not played while practising the scale
Andy- im a bit confused, why is that extra note (high e, fourth finger) shown, that would be the start of the third octave i guess? 8 note scales but 17 notes shown?
Justin guitar - check it out
Noob question here: Why were there 6 notes played on the Em pentatonic?
Pretty damn good man your a excellent tutor shame about the singing voice tho. but we can't have perfection all the time.
OOOOOOOHHHH backhanded compliment. I'll take it though x
who the hell is rip hunter and can the prat play the guitar like Andy, btw, this is a good lesson
Great video Andy, thanks for posting...is that a Huddersfield accent you have there?
Hey Andy :) I don't quite understand why you didn't have the last note on the 7th fret, high E in the major scale? :) According to the diagram you showed in the video, on the high E, you should be playing 3 notes? Have I missed something or? :)
- Btw, love your videos, you're a great teacher ! Respect from Denmark!
I'm not sure, but maybe your confusing the 3 notes per string method (7 positions) where Andy is using the 5 position method. I'm confused too if I'm honest :-)
Tim Nim Anderson
Bit of a pity that Andy has not answered your question which I think is valid. There are 3 notes in diagram on high E string but he only plays 2.
I think the picture is reading the fretboard upside down. And yes I am well aware that you asked this question two years ago but I can't help myself.
This confused me too. Andy should correct this.
I subscribed cause I saw the Fleetwood Mac LP
Hey man, great video, strange question but where did you get those framed record covers inthe background? the Yellow sub and roumors ones are amazing
You mean Rory Pond?
"ode to joey."
