  • decided to do a shorter video today for you people as I know most probably don't want to watch an hour long video
    I'm real happy with this and UT seems like my front end vibration "under torque" is pretty much gone (I still feel a bit but it's much better)

    I used one of those box wrench to torque wrench adaptors for $8.50 on Ebay. It allowed me to precisely torque the upper ball joint with a 27mm box wrench to 60 lbs.

    I hope you didn't drill the jackstands, not a tool to modify.

    I'm doing my 03 astro today. Original Ball joints with Rivets 😢 & in Michigan. Any suggestions. I believe I'm going to have to get the torches out. I did one with my long barrel air hammer & drill but that took forever. PITA. I wish someone would have already R&R them then no biggie. Lol

      Air hammers seems to be the way to go - If you can it makes sense to remove the entire control arm and bench it to do the work - You can press out the worn bushings and press in new ones at the same time

      Yeah. Either way it's seems to be a PITA!! Lol did the CV axle from Napa. Well, didn't know but the flange that goes in the hub wouldn't fit, so finally figured it out the flange had to be knocked off. Napa didn't know? Oh well, got upper & lower Ball joints in but this upper one i can't get much torque on the castle nut before the control arm bottom out on the steering knuckle , so I back the nut off & leave about a 32nd of clearance & can get the cotter pin in but man not much torque. Bottom bj I torque to 95 ft lb no problem. I doing this job for my brother cuz he can't afford to have it done. Never did front end work on a 03 AWD Astro & never again either!! Lol. Any idea on this upper BJ? Thx

      @@pauld7309 it's better to over tighten to get the kotter pin to line up than to back off - I use a long box wrench and haven't had any issues

      I can't get Hardly any torque on it without it pulling the control arm down to the knuckle!! I'm thinking maybe wrong taper & wrong BJ?? I'm taking it back out tomorrow. Amazon Moog, so could be wrong. Driving me crazy. Lol

      I feel your pain I am in Cape Cod dealing with rusted in rivets now. This doesn't help

    What ball joints do you run they seem to separate the an arm from the knuckle mine rubbing. Any suggestions?

      I don't recall this set, possibly MevoTech - I had the lower control arm ball joints drilled out so I can replace the uppers and lowers myself easily and have done them a couple times - I always try out whatever HD versions I can find on Rockauto.com - I'm sure I have videos on it here, search my playlists or type that into the search engine

      @@Goodfortunerob his ball joints are positioned on the underside of the control arms to increase the camber adjustment range. It also stops that rubbing problem.

    I watch part of the first video . At least the ball joints where bolted and not riveted . The rivets are a booger to get off compared the the bolted ones .

    • @AstroVanTribe
      @AstroVanTribe  Год назад +1

      If you watched the beginning of the first, longer, version from yesterday then you know this van had the riveted on lower, OEM, ball joints as well.... I paid a shop to drill out the rivets and install the ball joints I just replaced about 3 years ago - If you plan to keep the van I recommend doing the same thing, find a shop you can have do that job - After that you can do what I'm doing here whenever you need to

      @@AstroVanTribe I took my van in for a complete front end rebuild . The guy had the van for 17 days . 3 days before I was to get the van back dude brings it in the shop and realized he can't get any of the parts in 2 days . He gimped the job and replaced 4 ball joints and said it was rebuilt . Charged 1200. Bucks . No other parts where replaced because he sat 9n his ass for 2 weeks and tried to do a complete rebuild in 2.5 days . Shit you can't even get the parts for a 23 year old van in that time . Now after a complete rebuild only 2 of his ball joints are left on the van .
