Excellent idea. I also love my M8 and keep it forever. I added a M9-P a couple of years later and there‘s nothing more I need regarding a digital M. These are perfect tools. Mine are both silver chrome as my M5 and M4 and all the Leitz lenses I own from the late fifties and early sixties.

The M 240 sensor provides IMO the closest color gamut to traditional film. One big reason why I will keep the M 240. The CV 28/2 is a bit of hidden gem in the Voigtlander line but great lens which I also use both for film and digital. The M8 is great to use for IR shooting - no conversion is needed just a simple IR filter on the lens. Unfortunately the later Leica M monochrome cameras do not have this capability anymore. The M 240 actually works quite well with longer exposure time for IR, too. Biggest culprit of the M8 is IMO the cropped sensor - I am personally a fan of full frame, but this is just personal preference. Have fun with the M8 :)!

I had an M8 for almost a decade. It is an amazing camera and very capable once you are used to the (small) limitations! I sold mine to get an M9. I still think the colors from the M8 sensor are nicer than the M9. Thanks for the great video!

I have the mp-240 and had the m9 (ccd sensor). I was worried about the m9 sensor corosion so I sold it after it had a check up. I ended up buying a summicron 50mm current version with the money and then shot film for a few years on my m3 and m6. I still shoot film but I can honestly say I am enjoying the smooth film profile in camera on the mp240. Additionally I think the shutter sound was cool on the m9 and M8 but I prefer the more silent more modern shutter on the 240 and up. I have never tried the m8 however. I feel the extra stop shutter speed would be nice for portraits especially with the crop factor. Also do a review of that lens! I have always liked the look of it and since they just came out with a new version, the older 28 ultron will go down in price! Great video!

I love the Leica M8 the Black and White JPEGs from it are amazing.
I typically use either a 50mm Summicron or the Voigtländer 35mm Nokton Single Coated. I just nabbed a Ricoh GR 28mm LTM lens (with the adapter) for it too but haven’t had time to test out that lens for it.
I highly recommend the Voigtländer though. Colors looks great with it. It isn’t super sharp but it really makes the M8 have a film like feel to the photos.
Edit because autocorrect hates the work Summicron

Leica already stopped the CCD sensor for M8. So in 2024, will it still be a good choice?

I can relate with your Leica journey. I started out with an M8 which I bought in 2008 and still have. It's a wonderful camera - the CCD is quite special in it's own right. I then picked up an M240 in 2019 and it's a pleasure to use for different reasons. But much like you, I do find the CCD images a bit more special. I just wish Leica still used the CCD sensor with 24MP. But that's nit picking - the M8 and M240 are quite the tools, and fortunately nowadays more affordable than the astronomical M10 series. If you can, consider investing into the Leical M lenses. They are expensive, but are truly investments. All the Leica M lenses I purchased over the years have all appreciated in value, something I've never experienced with all the other camera systems I've owned. But regardless of that, the Leica lenses really do have a magical quality to them. They literally are what makes shooting M cameras phenomenal.

I´m also thinking about buying my first digital leica, have my eyes on the m262 but the price is still too high for a good body. I was also thinking about the m8, than the m9 and the m240.....Some how I like looking and comparing between all these different models but at the end you are right: you can always sell or trade your current camera and you can buy a new / old one that fits your need. For now I will keep looking for good options to buy here in Germany. lets see ; )

The M240 is probably the best Leica M which normal money can buy. The IQ is top notch, even today and the sensor produces very film like gaumet. I have used film for over 45 years and still do, so i know wht normal film looks like in print. The M8 is excellent for B&W photography, if you prefer a certain look. The best senario was to keep the M240 and then get the M8 for B&W .

  • @RikoGonzalez

I went from an M9 to a 240, not missing the M9 one bit, the shooting experience is 1000x times better with the 240, the “magical” ccd rendering is not enough to make up for the quirks of these older bodies. I feel as though my 240 shots look almost identical if not more filmic to the M9.

Great video as always. Been following you for a few months now and I think you will finish up with a Leica M10-P. I have been round the houses with Leica over the past 2 years and its cost me!! Started with M240, then went to the silver M240-P and after about 6 months went to the M10. The M10 was a very good upgrade, especially in terms of OOC JPG and ISO. Then just 2 weeks ago I was seduced by a used M10-P. I wanted to love the Fuji Xpro 3 but somehow it doesn't engage me like a Leica does. I used to be anti-Leica, thinking it was just for the people with more money than sense. However as soon as I went to the Leica store in London and held an M10 I knew no other camera would feels that wa, its build and simplicity is awe-inspiring. I also have a Sony A7R III but (whilst it has many benefits) it feels like a computer with a lens attached. Great channel and I look fwd to your review next year of the M10-P :) Ian (UK)

Thanks! I think, given the Leica isn’t a one-and-done camera and the fact I like the CCD colors and B&W, this is the right camera for art making. If I get more proficient with the rangefinder I could end up with an M10 one day but for now it’s an S5 + M8
