- Is the Leica M-P 240 Still Great in 2021? You bet it is. This camera can take a beating and keep on clicking. The battery life, Sapphire glass, larger 2gig buffer and frame line selector are great improvements over the original M240. I go through a shooting session with this camera which I have owned for six years and still enjoy the shooting experience. I love the simple menu system and the rangefinder manual focusing such a joy to use. these cameras are still not inexpensive but for around $2500-$3000 used you can pick one up. If you can find one. Yes very expensive still.

I just bought a brand new M-P 240 for 4,000 USD/ 3.350 EUR. It was a non-seller in the Leica Store. It's better than my M240 due to the larger buffer. That's why I bought the M-P240. The 240 are a bit faster to handle than the M10. Next important job for my two Ms and my Q is the royal visit by our Queen in our town on Sunday... I like your no nonsense videos. Keep on rolling, Kirk.
Have fun photographing that event!
I bought an M-P 240 last month and I've been enjoying it so much! It is pretty much enough for me. Thanks for uploading a very informative video. Liked and Subbed!! Cheers!!
Thanks Sean - I really enjoy this camera and love the shooting experience I get with it. Hope to do more videos featuring it.
Great video Kirk! I use an M-P 240 body and an M-10 body interchangeably, and I really feel there is no practical downside to using the 240 vs. the M-10. As you’ve shown, it’s still a great option in 2021!
Thanks Michael! I love working with my M-P 240. I’m going to do more with it in the future.
I love the coiled rope in the window shot, especially the processed black and white.
Yes Andrew one of my favorites as well.
I think the straight out of camera black and white really looks good.
I am a silver effects user but I would go with the SOOC SHOTS.
I guess it depends on the look you want. I like the way Silver Effects handles the files.
Hi Kirk, I was reading the description of the video and when it said that it can take a beating and keep on clicking I thought it was going to be a Timex review (LOL). Great shots by the way, I don't know if it’s my imagination, but it looks to me like the RAW shots converted to B&W have more detail than the B&W jpegs sooc. Stay safe.
Thanks Enrique! Haha I thought about that comparison while I was writing the description.
I really liked this video, I like that you take the time to talk through your thought process around each photograph. I also agree the SOOC B&W jpgs that come up of my M10 are fantastic.
Thanks Ben! I love my M-P 240 I just need to use it more!
Wonderful video. Thanks for taking the time to explain your thought process and showing us the results.
Love the camera and the company! Now if everything associated with them was not so expensive.
Great video and photo compositions! After shooting for many years Leica M film only, I purchased last year my first digital M - a mint Leica M-E 240 which also has the 2 GB buffer size. It doesn't have the gorilla glass (I am simply using a protective LCD cover instead) and frame lines cannot be changed manually. But everything else is the same - love the color gamut of this sensor and agree that the B&W in camera JPGs are already very good, but I also shoot in RAW to get a bit more details in the shadows via PP. Nevertheless, for B&W I still prefer shooting B&W film for personal preference. The M 240 camera series is currently the best quality for the price deal in digital Ms out there. If no high ISO shooting is needed, the M 240 is all I need.
Hi Martin - I shot film Leica for so long and then not for a very long time. I had my M3 CLA'd and my M5 is being worked on right now. I love those two cameras. Shooting film with them is an experience and I will always do some. The M-P is a wonderful camera although I wish it did not have movie ability built in because I have no use for it with manual focus. I will never sell the MP, thought about it but decided against it. When I get the M5 back I'll do some more B&W and some Portra. Love converting my Raw files from the MP with Silver Efex.
Silver Efex conversions looked the best to me ..
Great video with some useful technical details about the P, also some fantastic black and whites
Thanks Marcus! I love the M-P 240. I need to shoot with it more.
I just bought a M240 as my first Leica, and excited to learn the b/w jpgs look so great.
John you will love the camera. You can adjust the jpgs in camera a little. Experiment with them a little.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thank you Kirk. I'm fairly new to photography. Do you use a UV filter to protect your lens, or an ND filter? I have a Voigtlander 75mm F 1.5 lens to pair with the M240 and am reading I should use an ND outside if shooting wide open. Any tips? Thanks!
John I just use a UV on my Leica 50 Summilux. I will go out from time to time with 3 stop ND. But if you are going between inside and out like traveling then best to stay with a UV. I tend to decide before I go out if I’m going to look for things to shoot wide open. Personal choice. I use B+W ND filters which are very color neutral.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thanks so much Kirk, you've been very helpful.
Nice video, Kirk. And I’m not the only guy in Gloucester who shoots BnW! I’m relieved! 😂. I hope to see you around town!
I like B&W the most.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography same.
Nice video Kirk, been close to pulling the trigger on the 21mm Super Elmar, and I think your images sealed the deal. Cheers!
Chris it’s a beautiful lens!
Kirk rewatching this one. Great video. I finally uploaded a few from ireland. Still getting used to being on camera but it’ll get easier 🤣
You are doing fine in front of the camera. Just do more of it and explain what you are shooting and why.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography thanks for the encouragement Kirk. Yeah I haven’t scripted much to date but yes it’s amazing you can forget the basics !! Thanks mate
I would love to see your files before adjustment. Very curious how they come out of this camera.
The M-P 240 files are a little warm and need to be cooled down a bit. For B&W I use Silver Efex Pro 2 and the High Structure pre set. This can sometimes overdo things a bit. The jpg files are very nice
Great for showing the three shots at the same time. Most of camera review you tubers forget to do that or are lazy editors...
Thanks ! I thought it worked well for that video.
Great Video, thank you👏👏 nice greets from Austria
Thanks Haymo!
Great video. I have the Q2 for my digital photography and the Olympus OM-1 for my film work. Currently trying to decide if I should buy an analog or digital Leica M rangefinder camera to add to my kit. Any recommendations?
I would look for a Leica M6 for shooting film. That would mean a lens or two as well so maybe not. The Q2 is so versatile and wonderful to use. I wish I had one.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thanks Kirk. Much appreciated. With the Q2 I don’t really need another Leica camera but it’s so tempting 😉
Tye LEICA MP is the most and sophisticated M camera ever made, but also, made out of the best materials in the industry, and finally: it bridges the big gap between the M AND R system with CMOS Sensor.
I love mine Tom!
Thanks for the video!
Hi Kirk, I enjoyed seeing your photos from your Leica camera. I was just wondering if you ever enter photo contests in recent times? Also, I'm a bit confused as you have said as a photo journalist you used Canon camera(s). Which camera did you use first, Canon of Leica?
Hi Fairstamp, no I usually don’t enter contests. For the most part judging of contests is a subjective exercise. I do enter my work locally at the Rockport Art Association for exhibition which is all I really care about. I started my career with Leica which included my M3 and M5. I needed longer lenses so I also used a Leica SL mot to shoot sports with. This all lasted for about 2 years until I switched over to Canon for everything.
Great video. Love the shot at 9:55. I’m still shooting my m8.2 ten years on and I love it. How you post more with the mp 240. How do you find the super elmar. I’m considering it.
Thanks Colin! The 21 SE is an absolute must. I love this lens! Sharp, wow beautiful contrast and color rendition.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography thanks Kirk. I was looking at this or the older 21mm elmarit 2.8. Obviously this is a more refined Lens.
Stan Tamarkin tried to talk me into the Elmarit a little less money at the time. Now with the price increase I’m sure it’s more. The Elmarit is much larger. The Super Elmar is very small. I also have an old 21 3.5 Super Angulon from the 60’s made by Schneider. So the 21 SE was meant to replace it.
Silver Efex Pro 2: What Preset do you use?
Usually High Structure, there are two harsh or smooth. be careful though as this preset is prone to halos
LEICA M 240- P has the sapphire glass screen, but the M 240 has the gorilla glass.
Honestly I thought it was the same thing
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Sapphyre glass is put into the most expensive watches. The P version is a JEWELRY product. Be proud owning sush a produst. It is a High Art industrial SCULPTURE product. Great!
I could tell that you really care for your cameras. I suppose you wouldn't be interested in selling?
Sorry this camera is my baby.
Came here because crash landing on you 😹
Not sure what that means but ok
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography its netflix movie, ri jeong hyeok use that camera 😅
