I’m not paid to take photos, therefor I love to use my M10. IF it was my profession, I’d go for some super high end spray and pray-system with a kickass AF. But I don’t like that kind of photography - I like the slow pace capturing with my M.

Great video as always brotha! I’m a professional photographer who shoots, documentary, lifestyle, and product. I use m10 for all of it and I would never go back to Fuji or canon. I think its just personal preference. It also takes some time to get used to the range finder but once you do its like second nature.

  • @Jayysam95

My thoughts exactly, I spent a lot of money on an M8.2 kit and the Q to realize that the Fujifilm X100V is the perfect camera for me. You can get it and save like $2000 versus buying a Q or M240 kit. It shoots like an M240 but with better high ISO, DR and AF. Great video Evan!

  • @joelek110699

I love watching your videos. It makes me feel like I'm travelling to the US again! Also, you summed up exactly why I own an M10: photography is a passion for me, but not a career. I don't need the best quality (although it's tough to get better quality than with a brand new Leica and an APO-summicron lens...) and all I want is something I can take with me wherever I go. I just throw on a 50mm or a 35mm lens on it, and go out for a drink with friends, and I get some shots that make us all smile and laugh when we look back at them. I use it to collect memories, and nothing is better than a rangefinder to do that!

I like your channel that you are one of the very few Leica gear RUclipsrs who are not just positive and enthusiastic about the brand but also openly talk about what you don't like. I feel most other Leica-related videos are much too streamlined, and you really nicely position yourself differently. I agree with your point that Leica is for the experience and not just for getting the shot done - which can be often easier be taken with another brand camera. I personally like the rangefinder focusing system which brought me initially to Leica, but it also comes with culprits.

What almost no one understands about shooting Leica M cameras is that the price of acquisition may be sky high but the price of ownership is tiny. You can buy a M body and lens today and sell it 2 years later with minimal depreciation and sometimes even none or appreciation. This isn’t possible with other digital camera systems. The M system is not for everyone however it is extremely rewarding. I am a hobbyist and having owned a bunch of Nikons, Sony and Leica Ms i can tell you that I make my most daring and rewarding images with my cellphone camera and the Leica Ms. The camera inspires me to go out and take pictures. It looks like a tourist’s camera but only a real camera head knows it can shoot professional quality images if u know how to use it. The rangefinder pushes you to frame better and focusing manually is easy peasy.

I've got the M10 and the Q2 and they're both great. Sure, it's an awful lot of money, but it's worth it for me, because it made photography fun again for me. And I think I shot some of the greatest photos I've ever taken with them, because I always have them with me. But it's true, you get a LOT of other gear for the price of that. In the end, it's just a question of where to put your priorities I guess.

  • @memkills

I was in the same boat. Got an M240. and eventually traded to a M10 silver. I thought that I missed autofocus and all of those "features". but as someone who solely uses primes I found myself missing that M10. I've traded around between Sony A7's, Canon EOS R's, and Fuji X-T's. But ultimately Got another Leica M10-P in black and don't miss it. Completely comes comes down to the way you shoot. If during the day you shoot 5.6 and higher, and use zone focusing, you can focus faster than on autofocus and thus a Leica M makes sense. If you NEED higher than ISO1600 don't get an M240. If you need autofocus, then go with an Q2 or Fuji X100v. For me My M10 is perfectly speedy, has enough features I feel like I can shoot just about anything besides sports. Plus I still have my EOS R because of my Macro lens for scanning film and video abilities using it as a webcam and all that.. in the end.. can I use a different camera and get the same or better results? yes. but do those other cameras make me want to pick it up and go shoot. giving me that photo mojo, nope. The M10 does this for me.

Is it the perfect camera for high stress Pro situations ? No, but limitations are a huge part of the experience. The simplicity is calming. I bought a 246 last year and it might be my favourite camera of all time. (Also have a Q2 and quite a bit of Fuji X stuff). Also, the cameras do produce a 'look' that no other cameras have.

Pro should get away even with pinhole in my view. Shooting no matter with what and making the best use of it is what makes a pro pro, don't you think. So using m240 reliably is possible. As a bonus it comes with a different mindset in oppose to modern machine-gun-cameras.

  • @sirrobin
    @sirrobin 3 года назад

good video, I think the argument for "no one needs an M camera" is a good one. I think that every photographer needs to try the viewfinder experience though. I come from a canon SLR and after getting an M10, it made me slow down, look more, and focus on intention more because that's what the viewfinder makes you do; and I think whether if you are a pro or an enthusiast, the viewfinder experience will really improve your craft.

Love your channel but I think your take on the M240 is way off. I currently own an SL but I used to have an M240. The ONLY reason to buy a M240, or any other rangefinder camera is to use the rangefinder. It's a different type of shooting. There's huge drawbacks to a rangefinder but there's also a lot of positives.
Why would you run around with an M240 composing from the rear screen? It basically defeats the purpose of using this camera.

I’ve had all the Fuji’s (X100S, XPro2, XT4) and I have to tell you, the Leica M10 that I have, makes better photos and here’s why. Photos on the street are easy, but great photos are hard to come by and when you take the time to slow down, relax and enjoy the moment with a Leica (that frankly sucks in the autofocus, ISO and shutter speed category) you make better photos. it is not an Instagram camera, it is not a landscape camera, but when I take my M10 and crapy Summilux 50MM out with all its deficiencies it makes killer shots because I slow down, think through the scene and focus on the photo (not letting the nannies shoot the photo). sorry for the rant, but that’s an actual Leica shooter who’s got the whole gammut of Fuji stuff as well (not to mention the Canon film gear to boot).

Used have Fuji and Nikon. 100's of menu options drove me crazy! Camera models updated/replaced almost yearly. Leica models endure and replacement cycles are 4-5 years. Leica camera are built like tanks and their menu setting are simple. I used to have an M10 (rangefinder didn't appeal to me but I had to try it) but traded it in and jumped to the Leica SL2 and added the Q2M. Still use my M glass on the SL2. Added the Sigma Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens to balance out the M lenses using the Leica M-L adapter. My M lenses aren't all Leica but Voigtlander and Zeiss as well. The Q2M is a fantastic camera with an awesome f/1.7. Am I wealthy? Nope!
I just enjoy the feeling of holding and using a Leica camera. They will last me a long time without the usual upgrade GAS syndrome I used to have with Nikon & Fuji.

Regarding the newest Leica m lenses, I can't say for sure, but I believe they are pretty much close to the top primes of other companies (my Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art and 85mm 1.4 DG DN Art are crazy good, almost perfect). However, Leica lenses are much smaller.

I think videos like this always bring out the Leica haters. But for pure hobbyist like myself (and some pros) there's nothing wrong with owning a Leica (as Even stated in this video). Everything Evan said could also be applied to shooting film as well, but that seems to be alive and well. Use the gear that suits your needs. I wouldn't enjoy a Sony A7III with a 24-70 F2.8...not because it's not good just because i don't have a need for a camera like that. I also own an X100v for the times I just want the picture or need other capabilities. Some people (erroneously) say Leica M is the Ferrari of cameras...it's not. It's more like a vintage car...you don't drive a '67 Corvette because you want lane keeping assist or a hybrid engine...you drive it for the experience/looks. The same applies to Leica M...to each his own.

I agree, if you want value and a camera that is fast and can handle just about any situation, Leica M is not the camera for you. I see Leica M shooters are people who shoot as a hobby or enthusiast and aren't too worried about accuracy, and speed. It is more about the shooting experience and less about making a photo that pays the bills and has all the bells and whistles.

The money you pay for a Leica m240 strips all the buttons and options off the camera and simplifies shooting. Second, you can use M lenses. Anyone can use an autofocus camera while looking at the screen on the back.

It seems that a lot of people who want to own a Leica M don't need it and you all fall into the error of judging the M system for what it is not made for. The M's are really unique and they're made for specific situations: reportage and street. Of course you can shoot landscape, wedding, portraits, a coin laundry... with a Leica M but there are better and cheaper tools for that matter. The way you were using the camera on this video says it all. A Leica M excels in street photography and situations where you need to react fast because of its focus system and the lenses. Having the best optical viewfinders with no blackout and no lag like most EVFs have is paramount for this kind of photography. Also, the lenses include distance scale and focus tab, so you can know exactly where you are focusing even without looking at your gear, just by touching the focus tab. Your eyes are always looking at what's happening around you, and when you react to a scene, all you have to do is move the focus tab to the zone you want to be in focus while bringing the camera to your eye and then, shoot. No more hassle moving focus points, no more focus-recompose... the camera just disappear. So, this system is made for photographers who need to shoot in those situations, not for people who have a lot of money. The problem is, people who don't need these features in a camera are buying Leicas anyway just because "they want a Leica". Bad decision. Also, you said some people asked you about buying a Leica or a Fujifilm camera. They have no idea about what they need in a camera. Leica M and Fujifilm cameras are two extremely different systems. I also have x100 and x-pro cameras (I'm a Fuji fanboy) but I have never been able to adapt my Fujifilm cameras to the same way of shooting that I have when using my M10. The manual focusing experience on Fujifilm is lame😂Best wishes for your clothing store!

I'm lately looking into Leica M and watching your video the first thing I noticed is that you are shooting from live view missing the that the main point of a Leica M is using a rangefinder and bright frame to see outside of what lens can see.

I love my Sony system, but man I want a Leica. I am thinking at some point I will get a Q2... I would probably only justify one Leica lens anyway - and why not just do it with a 28mm (I prefer 35mm... but hey.... you can always crop with that 47MP sensor). I am also scared to buy it.... I might love it too much...

Honestly speaking Q2 and i own both if you like to shoot wide 28 is fantastic; if you are looking at shooting 50 or above and better iso performance M10r but keep in mind the lens selection price tag - as well Q2 has IBIS where you can with a steady hand negate the iso performance by dropping shutter speed on m10r minimum i would say 1/60th and hit rate might be bad as well the LCD on m10r is trash 🙁 you can check my IG if you wish @7thobserver but i would say Q2 is a fun camera and everyday carry for sure

shortcomings?? has photography actually improved, really improved after the introduction of zoom lenses, auto-focus or digital? A good photo is made by the one behind the camera and not by the camera. this is the tool only. A great painting is not great because of the canvas, isn't it?

  • @jimmyrocket02

Why? Optical viewfinder. No matter how good EVFs get I don't like looking at them, I like looking at the real thing. So get a DSLR right? Nope. I'm a rangefinder guy. What about Fuji? Lovely cameras, and some of them even have novelty optical viewfinders, but they're not rangefinders.
I noticed you used live view often in the video. I wouldn't shoot Leica either if I primarily used live view. I'd just use my phone and be done with it.

To me the Leica M cameras aren't meant to shoot still life or urban landscape like you typically do. They are meant to shoot people, a lot of people, usually on the street and usually by zone focusing. At this point it's the best and no autofocus system can compare to learning the camera/lens. It has a steep learning curve not many people want to invest the time on. So for you Evan, I completely see how you get to that personal decision as it's not a camera made for someone like you.

    • @linjicakonikon7666

Alex, that's b.s. Leica were used by a few of my favorite National Geographic photographers from the 70s,80s and 90s Shooting stories that included EVERYTHING under the sun.and they shot it all on KODACHROME 25 and 64 films that had NO LATITUDE. NO room for error. They shot in the worst conditions and didn't see their results until they arrived back in National Geographic headquarters MONTHS later. I grew up as a young photographer emulating these amazing shooters,William Albert Allard, Jim Richardson, and others who found whatever equipment they felt they could rely on in the worst conditions mid assignment in the middle of nowhere. They didn't spend their time on RUclips handwriting about the latest lens or " Holy Trinity" zooms. They were too busy trying to figure out how to gain access to their subject matter in places where no one understands English. And they were on a deadline. Once you can shoot on color transparency film, like Ektachrome or Velvia, you can shoot on ANYTHING film or digital. Shoot Leica or shoot Canon or Nikon or Holga or Deardorf or Linhof. But shoot. If you get bored, go eat a sandwich, grab a drink, wander the location...then try again. The images are there. If they were snakes, they'd bite you they are so close to you. But shoot.📷 How's that for a friggen rant?

Locations don't "stink". Photographers do. You're young and stuck with a short attention span and have watched too many Matt Day videos. RUclipsrs tend to shoot like each other. The problem with following your peers, especially at your age, is that it's kind of a Blind leading the Blind problem. Study the masters and shoot like you're 7 years old. Have the sense of curiosity of a child and the technical mastery of someone in their 70s. Shooting Matt Day photos only makes you a mediocre photographer who gets bored of parking lots. Study William Eggleston who, when complaining to a friend that his hometown of Memphis was nothing but ugly stuff, was suggested by his artist friend "Well then shoot the Ugly Stuff". The rest is history. If you can't see the beauty in the Ugly, you won't see much of it anywhere else.

I disagree with your assessment about Leica Ms. In your way of defining a Leica M , it sounds laughable to any one that owns and drives a muscle car form the past! They are worth a ton, they are incredible powerful and just bad ass because of how good they feel and actually perform, so does a Leica! Leica glass for Ms is the equivalent of race fuel and Detroit Lockers for such cars! Expensive? Yes, but what high quality item is not?
