Love this video. As the son of a pro photographer a lot of this resonated. Dad was a Hassy guy as well as Nikon when he shot 35mm. He always told me, ‘The camera is just a tool- mastering light is where the art is. Master the light to become a photographer.” Photographers, like any artisan, have their favorite tools, but I’ve taken crappy photos with my Leica M10 and great ones with my Sony point and shoot.
Hilarious, Dave! Great video. I, too, have had to stop and think sometimes…. Yeah, I’m getting sucked in! Leica is more than just a camera, but it is, after all, just-a-camera. Well, you know. Keep em coming, better and better every time, brother!
@@davidherring LOL- I think you missed owned, will own or owns a Noctilux on the list though. I own, have owned and will probably owned another even though most of them sort of suck :)
Good one, humor is an art form! The disturbing part of hearing "make a photo" is the FACT that we now look at images and sometimes wonder how much of them are actual subject matter and how much is AI generated editing. I enjoy using Lightroom in post now that I'm retired and have the time to devote to it but I don't own or have any desire for Photoshop......that's just me. I can catch enough material in the lens that I have no use for "making art" with AI.
The only thing I think is a bit off with this is the lens thing. I feel like in general the Leica community judges you for not shooting Voigtlander. Either you have more money than sense for buying a Leica Lux or you don't understand the importance of character by shooting Zeiss. Had nothing but positive energy when it comes to by TT 50mm 0.95. Oh, and I do not associate Sony with banger, just OK video. I feel its more Billingham than Oberworth Noobdy can take a picture of a pile of trash in the street like a Leicaman can
Love this video, I think Ken Rockwell referred to it as a "Leicaman" someone who fits all of these. One thing you forgot is you're not allowed to use Liveview or a Visoflex as it's taking away form the purist experience.
Wonderful comment. I mainly refrain from using liveview because of battery time on my M10. But it also gives me greater pleasure in staying in focus and being present not to look at that damn monitor all them time. It has proved my M10 to last for days and weeks on one battery charge. That's pretty cool. Reflecting on your own reasoning is by far more important than bashing your fellow Leica- or infidele fellow photographer ;-) You might risk learning something when listening to others and respecting their perspective on photography. A risk worth embracing!
That, I have never heard of. As a Leica user, I would never agree with something like that. In fact, I would love to have a visoflex for my M3 but I can't afford it right now.
Really enjoyed this video. Gave me a good laugh. Wait till you get onto Leica film photographers or people taking photos of gas stations. Another one worth the mention is wearing a beanie and using a short neck strap in this video though as another stereotype. 🤣
As a certified Leicaman, my comments to your insinuations 😉 1) If you have a good reason for holding the M wrong (being blind in the eye, etc), you do get a pass. 2) You ‘take’ photos with the camera (duh). And you ‘make’ photographs with light. 3) Be a Leicaman instead 4) What is the confusion? Black out is awesome. Also, get the P/BP. 5) easy to see why.. there is no M like the M6 and there are no cameras like the M. 6) You gotta like-a good story! 7) It’s called the Leica M Mount. I own a Voigt 15mm, it’s.. somewhere. 8) You got this right. I will still say everything I got from the mentioned brand has been better than the other 💩 9) See the work you buy be fore you buy? 10) Fuck the haters. This is all ❤️
To funny, calling it like it is. I resisted Leica for years as the old guys at the camera store were so elitist and unwelcoming. When digital finally hit the market the grumpy ones wanted nothing to do with it, said they were not real camera’s or Leica’s. The original Kodak CCD sensors in Leica were without peer. I took endless crap when I purchased my D-Lux7, told it wasn’t a real Leica just a rebranded Panasonic Lumix. Before I did I ended up meeting Leica factory person and learned about the partnership and also learned the color science was different. When a family member purchased the Lumx version we did side by side comparisons and guess which one always took a better photo? Leica’s are indeed special.
I admit I'm a Leica hater most of the time, although I truly admire the work of some Leica photographers like Phil Penman, Alan Schaller and the Fearnley bros. As a non-Leica shooter I do find it annoying when Leica users put non-Leica glass on their bodies. I mean, why spend $12,000 on a Leica only to stick a POS lens on the front. Voigtlaender is fine for Sony's but not a Leica, only Leica glass should adorn a Leica. As for how to hold a rangefinder, well, if you are right-eye dominant then you have to hold it the way Leica users hold it, they are 100% correct in this. Plus it avoids getting your runny nose up against the rear screen and getting snot all over it. On the rear screen, you can't really call a Leica M the ultimate street camera if you can't flip the screen down and shoot from the waist. Fuji XPro3 is the ultimate street camera.
love this video! Using a Leica M7, I'm definitely guilty of some of your points (my camera is blacked out, too! I just love that stealthy look though😅) About that "make a photo" term: I'm German and in German you do say "ein Foto machen" which directly translates to "make a photo"...not sure if the german heritage of the Leica brand is the reason though. Oh and since I'm using an M7 (which has way more precise shutter speeds than any other Film Leica) is of course inferior to using the M6! Everyone knows that.
When you started this intro, it instantly reminded me of the RUclips video "If Camera Brands Were People" by Mango Street. I get you on the accessories. My photo backpack is an Amazon Basics. My Slings are Wotancraft, Peak Design, and Bellroy. I also have a very small CaseLogic digicam crossbody that perfectly holds my M11, wallet, extra battery, and a few other misc. items. Love this video.
and i think its just easier to shoot right eye (if you can) as obviously your nose then hangs off the side of the camera. I dislike SLRs as my nose smooshed on the camera back.
This had me laughing and nodding all the way through. Having transitioned into the Leica realm a few years ago, I picked up on every issue you pointed out.
You are right. I just spent a month going around Italy and the Greek Islands and Athens, and those stickers do not fool anyone. Luckily I wasn't targeted by thieves, just people who have been seeing all the Leica Q, Q2, and Q3 videos on You Tube the last few years. A couple of the Leica shooters that I ran into insisted on taking me to dinner in Florence. It was great.
@Dave Herring ... Great video. As a now newbie in the Leica owner community, I agree wholeheartedly with most of these points. Photo books ... Eeek, artsy fartsy waste of money. Red dot ... No envy here, as I won mine for £20. Non Leica lenses and accessories ... I've got 2 lenses for my M6 Titanium, one 7 Artisans and one Voightlander, a £42 chinese leather half case. Leicas are for street ... Not on my watch folks, as I shoot sports, abstracts, architecture, nature and family. Using right eye .. I'm left eye dominant and will stick with using my left whilst using my spider senses to detect what's coming into shot.
How about those that when saying Voigtlander, say it in German. I’ve thought there was some random M mount lens maker I’ve never heard of. But no, just the same brand I have on my M2 as that guys something something monochrome.
Hello, no, you cannot get an M5 LOL!! How do you think I feel about out this? I have shot Leica going back to 89 so all this crap is hilarious. That said, back in the day, I rocked a Fischer Price sticker over my red dot on my M6 and it pissed everyone off even more than a red dot on my Holga. Love the channel and this vid is 100.
TOO LATE DAVE I DID TOOK THIS SERIUS AND NOW IM COMING FOR U LEICÁ SINCE YOU DONT APPRECIATE THE MARVELS THAT OUR COMUNITY OFFER. Yea they're weird man but I dont think they're as weird as most brand fans out there these days. Photographer now can't be real photographers if they dont show off their gear and it gets sad sometimes. When did we stopped looking at our photographs? I remember just wanting to go out of my house with my film dslr cause every time I looked through the viewfinder everything looked magical and the wait for the film to be ready was always so exiting...
Photographers are weird in general. You know this. So are car peeps.-let me tell you about Porsche owners… Porsche owners with Leicas, now there is a thought… I have a used Q for street and have worked on Porsches. I also bought Fiat parts at the Ferrari dealer-they were available and the same price as the Fiat dealer back in the day. It’s all good. I have never been to Paris or New York. Carry on.
I recently switched over to Leica (from digital Fuji and film Canon RF) with the M Typ 240 and M4-2 and it's interesting seeing so many of the Leica community quirks summarized in one video. Thankfully I've mostly found my way into the more open-minded parts of the community (like Matt Osborne's channel, which constantly recommends non-Leitz lens options).
Great video, I have the Zeiss 50mm F2 lens, and you get some comments about that, yet its a great lens. The latest comment I've heard is, your use a visoflex on a M11 not the rangefinder !
Hi Dave, you can tell by the amount of comments, that this is a fun subject. I love your approach. 🙂 I switched from many years using Nikon to Sony...because those systems fulfilled a certain purpose in my work. During the last years my Leica bodies found more use and when I don't need to shoot video, I leave the Sony gear behind. It's so much easier travelling with a small kit bag with a Leica M Camera and a couple of lenses...no batteries or dependance on a power source. Everything you mentioned is a development of marketing or hype generated by those who either don't own Leica M Cameras or have nothing else in their lives. It's a camera that takes images/pictures...just like any other brand. No more, no less... It's what we make of it that counts. I got an M6 nearly 20 years ago because I needed a camera without batteries and having to charge them. There is no power in the middle of the desert. I will not be able to power a laptop in the desert and there sure isn't any Instagram or Facebook to be had ...in the middle of the desert. So why bother? That camera has impressed with build quality and ruggedness...no mythical operation. I am still waiting for that 'mythical revelation'. Somehow I have the feeling I will be hoping forever. So you are right on the biscuit with your assessment. Love it!
Your subscriber's number lost a few zeros at the end somewhere... Cool channel, i wish u growth! Bless u! My dream is Sony A7RV 💜, but i look at Panasonic Lumix S5ii and it began to falling in love with me, sorry Sonya, ahaha)). And I know, I think, why now, after couple of ur videos: I think I saw something of that illusive 'leica look' in S5II photos, and I didn't knew what it was, until now. So, tnx, Dave)) People, don't throw at me tomatoes plz 😆 Btw, i found, accidently, about that 'making photos' - ruclips.net/video/Mixr-2qBlE0/видео.html, where it came from)
Haha thank you! I hope to add some zeros one day! The S5ii is a fantastic camera, and I honestly don't live the A7RV because it's too much a computer with a lens. Not as fun for me!
Dave, that at 4:06 has a good reason. In German you say “ich mache ein Foto”, literally translated “I make a photo”. A ludicrous amount of German photographers don’t speak English very well or not at all. That results in language feedback glitches. Leica is a German product and “bingo!”, cause revealed 😊. Most of native German speakers also exactly switch the correct usage of to get and to become, because phonetically it has the opposite meaning in German. So, if Germans tell you “I became your mail” they have no superpowers and morphed themselves into a mail, they are meaning “I got your mail”. That glitch is caused because in German, “got” translates into “bekommen” and that makes it for native German speakers very tempting to use “became’ instead of “got’. 😅 Hope I could clarify some things 😄
When I carry my Q2 around I often get compliments. However, the snottiest attitude regarding my camera was from another Leica user. I spotted some guy's Leica (without a red dot) on the bus and told him I admired his camera. I asked if it was the new M11P and he already gave me an attitude when he said it was an MP film camera. Well, from my angle I couldn't see the film winder. Then he saw my Q2 and came out with "the last thing I would ever use would be a Leica digital camera as I could get better results from a cheap Nikon or Canon digital". Well, excuse me.
Love the video! You should let the sarcastic guy out more often. Us Leica users absolutely need to hear this sometimes. All so true and I'm deffo guilty of some myself. If I may add two things: 10.1: Only Germans are real Leica users (haters)! I'm totally with you on the haters, but as a German, I frequent German and international forums. The english speaking forums are heaven on Earth compared two the German ones. Boy, those people are vengeful. If you don't know every piece of lore from 100 years of Leica, you better not post (or worse, ask) anything. They will come down on you. If you dare to criticize any Leica camera, you're dead. It's always the dumb users fault, the brand is untouchable. 11: Gotta shoot black and white! Black and white photography will always have a spot in my heart, but nowhere else is the hype so hard as with the Leica users. We got the Monochromes, but also, we love to convert. Random pic in colour? Convert to b&w, BAM, masterpiece! You don't get it? Well, you're a peasant! To which I like to quote this wonderful line from my favourite show: “Unfortunately for Britta and millions of photographers like her, just because something is in black and white doesn’t mean it’s good.” Keith David, Blankets and Pillows
The Portland hipster beanie hat is the cherry on top. Well done. One thing all Leica photogs have in common (and I own the over-rated $$$$ Q2) is that they have expensive cameras but take s*** pictures. My iPhone ProMax+ makes better pictures. (small nit: in images, glass is 80% of the image quality. And while I am in the neighborhood, "wierd" is spelled "weirdly". And as a native-born Texas, lose the hipster Open Road hat. Hipster cringe. Leave it to the Texas Rangers to wear. Get a mule-kick instead).
I loved this dude, as I get older, I think i will tap out of the M system... i already have my name on the list at my local leica store for the SL3. I just want a pinnacle image quality system, and the M system isn't it. Again, im OLDER, so using the freaking rangefinder is not so good as a crisp veiwfinder. Went back to my old film Nikons and kinda loved them. sigh. Again, LOVED THIS VIDEO.
Awesome vid and made me chuckle a bunch. As someone who is in Leica M11 and Sony full-frame systems but does not really go on social media, I'm pretty dense on these culture items. That said, I fall into the "Make a photo" camp but that is more about being respectful on the street and avoiding "capturing" or "taking" images of others. I also accessorize (Artedimano half cases that also covers the LDC rather than Oberworth) and cover my dot. I do think the covering my dot and covering my LCD gets folks thinking my camera is film and not expensive. Traveling internationally a lot, my Sony full frame always garnered a lot of attention. I recall being in a port area of north Jakarta and a bunch of fisherman were commenting on how expensive my "GMaster" lenses were, followed me, and made my outing pretty uncomfortable. That has not happened with the M11 yet.
Just taken delivery of my used M11 yesterday and was watching your vid for branded Leica merch.. well clearly that was a mistake...lol. Awesome watch, yet again!
Funny video. So many good points about people and their camera brand. Working as a journalist and photojournalist in the U.S. Air Force, I used NIKON. I would add 'photojournalist' to the Nikon name since it was the camera body of choice. Just add that to the peculiarities of Nikon people. The best point is that you called it, the camera is a box that houses a shutter. A SHUTTER. LOL. Had me laughing inside. So I would guess these new digital cameras are nothing more than a digital sensor. Nothing more. Your sense of humor we so welcome. BTW, I have a Leica and it is a Sony A7CR with the Leica name removed and Sony etched into the body. Your digital Leica is also a Sony if it has a Sony sensor. But who cares. It's the brand proudly displayed on the body that gives me permission to be snooty. And to add insult to injury, all those weird photos taken by Leica photographers look just like all my mistake photos taken with a Sony. Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
i love hearing the butthurt of these folks when you compare 50 cron to other slower 50mm lenses. I've compared the M11 with 50 cron to an old and bashed 5Ds with 50/1.8 and to be perfectly honest the images were fairly similar. I'm not bashing buying one just for joy and giggles but making your ego around it is quite funny actually.
I’m so glad you started with « tongue in cheek » 😊😅😂 As an ex-Leica owner I’m very sorry to say that Leica = massively over-rated, Leica owners = pretentious and deluded (I was, not deluded anymore, but maybe a little pretentious still!!)
Your Leica camera-holding data is incomplete. Here are some important guidelines for Leica shooters: don't ever let the camera get in the way... of your nearly omniscient attitude; be sure the wrist strap is above your Rolex, not below it (for quick camera access); after a day of down and dirty man-on-the-street shooting in your all black clothing, brush off your trousers before sitting in your late model Mercedes or Porsche convertible; never refer to yourself as a "photographer" (so pedestrian) - always say "visual artist"; always use very gentle tones with just a hint of condescension when talking with photographers (not visual artists) who use other systems; remember that you are not fat, you just have big bones; and finally, GTF over yourselves! (I shoot Leica and Nikon, with tons more Nikon glass - love them both).
@@davidherring lol well looks like i’m not quite “in” yet. i bought a leica dlux, and then i tried to join a leica facebook group but got rejected cuz apparently the dlux “technically” isn’t a leica due to the collab with panasonic. i had no idea- i guess i have to return this and get one of their accepted ones like a Q or a CL to be cool enough
Never even noticed you were holding the camera wrong! One thing that always makes me giggle with the Leica community is the claim of how simple and perfectly designed the bodies are… only to see them with bling in the form of extra hand or thumb grips to improve handling. And don’t get me started on the ‘Leica look’ ;) …… and for the record, I shoot a very old and battered Leica M9. Shoot what makes you happy.
I never heard that about how to hold a Leica. I hold my Leica what "Leica People" would say is the correct way, but not because they say it is the correct way. I have a big nose that likes to change my focus point on my Q3. If I hold my Q3 the "Leica way", my nose doesnt touch the touch screen.
I thought Leica shooters TAKE photos, that is they're street/documentary/reportage shooters taking scenes as they appear; whereas Nikon and other shooters SETUP/POSE their scenes as in MAKING photos.
To make a photo is for sure of German language origin. But I also checked some older camera manuals (SLRs) and to look through the finder with the right eye actually was also then recommended :) so it’s not a „Leica fan boy“ invention…
The "holding it wrong" segment never made sense to me. I'm left eye dominant so if my left eye isn't looking through the VF, everything feels off. Also, how is it even possible to shoot a Leica accurately with both eyes open? With the parallax fight between both eyes, and the different magnifications because of the VF, all I see is a double-visioned disjointed mess. I just tried it, it's awful.
Leica ARE ripping us off, take the M viewfinder - the cost of a diopter so that you can focus an £8000 camera is astonishing! On the CL, SL, S and all of their point and shoots it is built in adjustable, on the M it costs a further £300. It makes me so mad, in the Leica Store they don't even blink! RANT OVER, great seasonal contribution Dave but you may need a combat suit!
The Leica experience slows you down...........35 to 45 seconds to accurately nail rangefinder focus and then another 2 or 3 minutes holding the camera up near your face while slowly looking left and right to see if people have noticed that you are using a Leica LOL
I‘m saving some money for a Leica just because I want one - and I don‘t want to explain or justify my decision to anyone. I just fear the Leica „fanboys“ who wanna tell me how to use it properly. 😅
Great video I’m not you would call proper Leica user I’m not a professional not even a good amateur but I like taking photos most turned out blurred That’s how it goes ,I’ve always used canon cameras But always desired a Leica for whatever reason I don’t know ,But couldn’t afford one But even so ,I scrape some money together and treated myself to a Leica d lux 7 😮but only to find out I hadn’t brought a Leica camera but just a red dot on a pretend leica so instead of being proud ! when I’m out trying to take photos I just have to hide away in corners and dark alleys so no one sees I’ve got a pretend leica 😢
When a picture is taken by a leica, it is an art piece, and the photographer is an elitist artist. Also we always want to have things in life that are not affordable (by most of us).
The M6 is being overhyped, and not the best build quality, but many Hipsters, YT'bers are using it, so *if* i'd be into the market to buy a M series, it's for real no M6. Its also not the cutest Leica. And the original (means not the 2022 re-introduced M6) is hardly being service able, in terms of it's LM, there are simply no more spare parts. No hard feelings.
@@marcp.1752 I am so glad that I bought my M6 back when film camera prices plummeted due to the surge in demand for digital cameras. At the time, I decided to by the first M2, M6, or MP I could find in reasonable condition and at a reasonable price. I have been shocked and amazed at its recent price surge.
@@marcp.1752 The M6 is definitely neither under or overhyped. It is the first M with a decent and practical light meter and an efficient and fast rewind crank (combined). That is why it is a very usable Leica M. The M3 and 2 lack some viewfinder frames and a light meter (the rewind system in both is a pain), the M4 does not have any light meter; the M5 was a brisk with a weird light-metering system (that often failed and almost killed the Leica M project) and then came the M6. Saying "there are simply no more spare parts" is probably a ridiculous assertion: 1-Leica kept the tooling machines, 2-Leica M6 are currently being made so how could there be no part (spare or not??!!!).
1st things first - i do *shoot* Film since 84. 2nd, i know all the M series, but don't own one. 3rd, the M6 is being over-hyped nowadays as hipster camera - and guess what? Leica Wetzlar germany doesn't have any spare parts, to repair it's LM, so when it's being broken, it's game over. Last, but not least, i'd prefer any day over the M6. PS: You don't get it, the "new" M6 (it does clearly say leitz - not leica onto the red dot, just watch it) does have a different pcb, different semiconductors, than the original M6 starting from 86, ok? I am german, btw - and i know it.@@BrunoChalifour
Good-humored and really funny, although of course we could take a 100% opposite view on these 10 points and be as funny but that is the whole point here: let us be serious but not too serious.
Re “make photo”, it’s mostly taken from German. You say you make a photo. Might be a lot of German speaking people use Leica and use make instead of take!
It's unfortunate, but it's not unusual at all. It happens in the world of photography and pretty much in every other discipline or hobby... For example, the audio world is totally unbearable. I have a Leica M (which I love) and I mainly "make" street photography. I use the camera with an exposed logo, placing the rangefinder on my right eye to better see my surroundings. I also use a padded case to protect it, which I keep in my daily-use backpack. I switch between three lenses: a Summicron, a Voigtländer, and a Zeiss. But I do all this because it's what I prefer, not because it's some rule. I couldn't care less about how other Leica M users think it should be done. I'm a photographer, not a "Leica photographer." I also have a Fuji X-Pro, and I use it the same way. I use the same padded case and backpack, as well as the same lenses with an M to X adapter. I don't consider it a "poor man's Leica" at all! I love it and will keep using it just like my M. In the end, the loudest voices are often the ones spewing negativity, but they are definitely not the majority.
@@davidherring I know, you made it clear at the beginning of the video, and I like the relaxed tone you've given it. But since it's a parody, it's based on reality. All I did was share my thoughts on the subject, calmly and honestly. I'm not sure if you perceived any aggressiveness from me; that wasn't my intention at all, quite the opposite! Everyone should do what they please with their camera and their opinions.
Perhaps the most important thing for photographers to realize is that photography is hardly about them, but about what's in front of the camera. Then they can perhaps let go of all that snobbery.
People who say they make photos are the same people who buy into the marketing that they dont own a watch, they just look after of it for the next generation🤡
😂😂😂Right on the money!! love it, and feel a little guilty for some of them myself. And as a Norwegian, I never say making a photo as it sounds idiotic in norwegian. But I do say taking a photograph instead of snapping a shot. Great video
I've owned four Leicas. You're spot on. Obviously it's important to remember that every community has its gatekeepers, not just the Leica community, but the stereotype is correct.
Well, I think the idea of "making a photo" is typically reserved especially for the film Leica folks, especially those develop, scan/print their own negatives. Like there's a pride in actually doing all that on your own. Can't say for the digital Leica crowd cause I haven't owned one. Yet.
I use the term "make a photo" because I make a photo. I don't take a photo. Im not taking anything. Im using a tool, either my Leicas, my Nikons, or my Sony, to create something. "To create" is "to make", not "to take". Each tool has its own strengths. I am blessed that my father turned me on to Leica. For most of my life, Leica's were Dad's cameras, beyond my financial reach. But I learned what the Leica look is by using his. Now, I have my own, and what was his has become mine. It's not snobbish to like what a particular tool, however expensive(talk to Leica about that) does.
Leica is like Ferrari… not the fastest, not the most comfortable, not the most reliable, not the best on anything… but it will cost you arm and leg and your kidney 🤣🤣🤣 You hold the camera wrong, you make photos of the wrong subjects, you don’t have the right camera bag… you don’t deserve Leica !!! 😂😂😂
Yes. Leica Owners are Richer! Talk about Class! I'm willing to bet that most new Leicas are actually purchased by doctors, dentists, lawyers and nowdays techies who have tons of cash, but honestly don't have the slightest idea as to what makes a composition work. However, when they are on the cruises, they all have a Leica or two with tons of Leica lens strapped around their necks letting u know that they are Leica shooters. So goes the world, right? 😎😎
@@davidherring "Bah, Humbug!" Merry Christmas to You & All the LeicaSophisticates on this 25th of December 2023. By the way, I actually have used Leica cameras, film style, when I was a poor photography-film student at the Walt Disney School, CalArts, in the seventies. In those days, we could check them out from the Film Cage. Then some years later, went to two other film schools, one in New York, and the other in Canada. However,, in spite of all that, am still a poor starving artist. In between, did have a Leica CL, but don't consider that a real Leica. That's just the "toy version" of a Leica Camera. So I if facts are admitted, I'm a snarky Leica snob too. So it goes. That's the Way the World Turns 😎😎
You definitely can't handle the Leica. Proceed to mail your Leica and Leica gear to us. We'll take good care of it. Atte, someone who can't afford a Leica, and honestly would be too on edge doing street photography with gear more expensive than my yearly wage.

As far as photo books...I have about 20. BUT one my first books was a William Eggeleston book...when I looked at the pics I was like wait...why is he famous?? lol. this was entertaining BUT you missed out the Hat people too, you know the one you are wearing at 7:35. for some reason Leica shooters love that hat too LOL. thank you for the video.
Spot on - I have the M10-R, M6 & M3. I use them because they feel good in my hands and I can appreciate the nostalgia and build quality. A camera is just a box like you said and it's what you create with it that counts. Oh, and that Mustang....n I c e... I have to go and make a photo - HA...

Great video Dave! Had a good chuckle as a fellow Leica owner. Now let’s go get canceled on threads for being Leica photographers 😂
Trying to get cancelled but they keep leicing it!
@@davidherring 😂🙌🏻
Great video 😂
Thank you sir!
Yeah, AI is pretty wild. Not for me…
The only thing I think is a bit off with this is the lens thing. I feel its more Billingham than Oberworth
Noobdy can take a picture of a pile of trash in the street like a Leicaman can
Thanks for sharing!
I would be offended by this video but I tend to hide as I don’t have a “real “ Leica, just a Q2. And I happen to shoot that alongside my Pentax Q7!
The Q2 was my first digital Leica! The R4 was my first film Leica many years ago.
Love this video, I think Ken Rockwell referred to it as a "Leicaman" someone who fits all of these. One thing you forgot is you're not allowed to use Liveview or a Visoflex as it's taking away form the purist experience.
Haha I had that on my list but cut it to try and keep it to 10! 😂
I met Ken Rockwell a few weeks ago and had all of those things flash before my eyes. ;)
If you shoot Leica for film photography and don’t have a gas station photo, are you even a Leica photographer? Might as well have a Minolta.
@@davidherring shots at minolta gang will not be tolerated
😂😂 I only said Minolta because I have two haha
@@benjhaisch where is king jvpes 😅
Dang, I thought a beanie was standard issue with all Leica’s.
The biggest "thing" I've noticed is that they are willing to spend a lot of money on cameras and camera equipment! Fun video! Have a great week.
Haha thanks Charlie!
As a certified Leicaman, my comments to your insinuations 😉
1) If you have a good reason for holding the M wrong (being blind in the eye, etc), you do get a pass.
2) You ‘take’ photos with the camera (duh). And you ‘make’ photographs with light.
3) Be a Leicaman instead
4) What is the confusion? Black out is awesome. Also, get the P/BP.
5) easy to see why.. there is no M like the M6 and there are no cameras like the M.
6) You gotta like-a good story!
7) It’s called the Leica M Mount. I own a Voigt 15mm, it’s.. somewhere.
8) You got this right. I will still say everything I got from the mentioned brand has been better than the other 💩
9) See the work you buy be fore you buy?
10) Fuck the haters. This is all ❤️
Lol your comment
Coming home tired from work, looking at your video I really felt relaxed and refreshed again! Thanks Dave🙏🏻❤️
Perfect!
For sure! Thanks for sharing.
Oh come on Jim. You love Leica. ✌🏼
Make photos for German: foto machen
Btw: “who takes a Sony user seriously anyway “

Fine, I guess I will.
love this video!
That's interesting! I wonder if the German roots led to the phrase!
@@davidherring Fun fact: In Swahili, it's "kupiga picta", which translates to hit or beat a picture 😆
Haha I love that video!
Bruh I got a bellroy wallet after getting my Leica this summer. These comments are messing with my mind
@Hydrogen101 Belroy… what are you, an animal?
and i think its just easier to shoot right eye (if you can) as obviously your nose then hangs off the side of the camera. I dislike SLRs as my nose smooshed on the camera back.
Just noticed your thumbnail 😂
This had me laughing and nodding all the way through. Having transitioned into the Leica realm a few years ago, I picked up on every issue you pointed out.
It’s embarrassing that it’s all true 😂
You are right. I just spent a month going around Italy and the Greek Islands and Athens, and those stickers do not fool anyone. Luckily I wasn't targeted by thieves, just people who have been seeing all the Leica Q, Q2, and Q3 videos on You Tube the last few years. A couple of the Leica shooters that I ran into insisted on taking me to dinner in Florence. It was great.
That’s awesome!
I can only say one thing, you’re not a Leica shooter, it doesn’t come with just buying the camera.
No it literally does, alright?
@@davidherring Nope. Doesnt.
@Dave Herring ... Great video.
Thanks! Welcome to the Leica community. It's awesome and utterly ridiculous.
How about those that when saying Voigtlander, say it in German. I’ve thought there was some random M mount lens maker I’ve never heard of. But no, just the same brand I have on my M2 as that guys something something monochrome.
Ja, "VOIGTLANDER" (auf Deutsch)
Hahaha I agree with all the stupidity about us Leica shooters 😂
We really are a wild bunch.
Gotta try that fisher price sticker haha
If you took this serious wait until you see what I’ve got coming later this week….
Every brand has weird fans. I think it’s just all photographers 😅
Carry on.
Ha I've met some, and I totally get this.
Welcome to the jungle.
Great video, I have the Zeiss 50mm F2 lens, and you get some comments about that, yet its a great lens. The latest comment I've heard is, your use a visoflex on a M11 not the rangefinder !
The Visoflex on the M11 is a sin, of course!
Love it!
Thanks for the comment. It was fun making this video!

Ha I’m aware, but still think it sounds funny in English! 😂 Thanks for sharing!
Geeez. And proves my video!
Love the video! You should let the sarcastic guy out more often. Us Leica users absolutely need to hear this sometimes. All so true and I'm deffo guilty of some myself. If I may add two things:
10.1: Only Germans are real Leica users (haters)!
To which I like to quote this wonderful line from my favourite show: “Unfortunately for Britta and millions of photographers like her, just because something is in black and white doesn’t mean it’s good.”
Keith David, Blankets and Pillows
Yes to the black and white! That definitely makes the list haha. Agree 100% with what you said. Also, I need to check out these German Leica groups!😂
✌🏼
I loved this dude, as I get older, I think i will tap out of the M system... i already have my name on the list at my local leica store for the SL3. I just want a pinnacle image quality system, and the M system isn't it. Again, im OLDER, so using the freaking rangefinder is not so good as a crisp veiwfinder. Went back to my old film Nikons and kinda loved them. sigh. Again, LOVED THIS VIDEO.
Thanks for the comment and glad you loved the video!
I don't mind the Leica brand. But it's way too expensive. So my hard earned cash is spent elsewhere. But NOT on Sony stuff...
To many of us, the price is worth the experience.
For sure! I do the same thing, but definitely had to make fun of it!
Just taken delivery of my used M11 yesterday and was watching your vid for branded Leica merch.. well clearly that was a mistake...lol. Awesome watch, yet again!
Haha hope you enjoyed!
Thanks for sharing! Happy New Year to you as well!
i love hearing the butthurt of these folks when you compare 50 cron to other slower 50mm lenses. I've compared the M11 with 50 cron to an old and bashed 5Ds with 50/1.8 and to be perfectly honest the images were fairly similar. I'm not bashing buying one just for joy and giggles but making your ego around it is quite funny actually.
Lol thanks for the comment
I’m so glad you started with « tongue in cheek » 😊😅😂
As an ex-Leica owner I’m very sorry to say that Leica = massively over-rated, Leica owners = pretentious and deluded (I was, not deluded anymore, but maybe a little pretentious still!!)
I forgive you for this comment.
Man, this is so helpful. Thanks for letting us know!
i just ordered a Leica, and honestly i can't wait to experience some of this ridiculousness first-hand

It's pretty great ridiculousness.
Yeah the Leica community can be pretty ridiculous 😂
I never heard that about how to hold a Leica. I hold my Leica what "Leica People" would say is the correct way, but not because they say it is the correct way. I have a big nose that likes to change my focus point on my Q3. If I hold my Q3 the "Leica way", my nose doesnt touch the touch screen.
I thought Leica shooters TAKE photos, that is they're street/documentary/reportage shooters taking scenes as they appear; whereas Nikon and other shooters SETUP/POSE their scenes as in MAKING photos.
You got that backwards bro 😂
To make a photo is for sure of German language origin. But I also checked some older camera manuals (SLRs) and to look through the finder with the right eye actually was also then recommended :) so it’s not a „Leica fan boy“ invention…
So I’ve heard 😂
The "holding it wrong" segment never made sense to me. I'm left eye dominant so if my left eye isn't looking through the VF, everything feels off. Also, how is it even possible to shoot a Leica accurately with both eyes open? With the parallax fight between both eyes, and the different magnifications because of the VF, all I see is a double-visioned disjointed mess. I just tried it, it's awful.
Yeah it’s awful. I don’t get it!
Oh I’m suited up!
Forgive me for correcting you, but if you’re truly Leica, you don’t take a photo or even make a photo, you create an image…😂
Hahaha
The Leica experience slows you down...........35 to 45 seconds to accurately nail rangefinder focus and then another 2 or 3 minutes holding the camera up near your face while slowly looking left and right to see if people have noticed that you are using a Leica LOL
Hahaha
Partway through at this point, I think the "making" thing is just supposed to be more respectful to your subject and not really a Leica thing AFAIK.
🤷🏻♂️
I love the Leica M series, and would like one! But everything you described is absolutely true!!
«I've seen things you people wouldn't believe! 😅
Haha of course
Didn't Ansel Adams talk about making a photo? He did not like Leica, preferred the Contax, but hey what did he know about photography.
That phrase was not created by him, but he made have said it.
I‘m saving some money for a Leica just because I want one - and I don‘t want to explain or justify my decision to anyone. I just fear the Leica „fanboys“ who wanna tell me how to use it properly. 😅
The Leica fanboys are only in the comments online. You won’t encounter one in the wild because they don’t actually use their cameras.
If you start saying “make a photo” you’ll have better photos.
When a picture is taken by a leica, it is an art piece, and the photographer is an elitist artist. Also we always want to have things in life that are not affordable (by most of us).
Anything from a Leica is ready for a gallery straight out of the camera.
"Leica Photographers are a Different Class"
Yuuuup! It's called upper class, LOLOL!
Not with the behavior I outlined in this video!
I am a Leica photographer who uses my mythical and magical Leica M6 rangefinder body, leather half-case, and Leitz lenses to capture moments in time.
Oh man….. me too.
Except the half case. I don’t like the bulk.
@@marcp.1752
I am so glad that I bought my M6 back when film camera prices plummeted due to the surge in demand for digital cameras.
Always!
Re “make photo”, it’s mostly taken from German. You say you make a photo. Might be a lot of German speaking people use Leica and use make instead of take!
TIL this! But English speakers should just say it in English.
Leica is a waste of money for me. I would never get duped into buying a hype. Thanks for exposing these pretentious Leica shooters.
Lol to each their own.
Enjoyed this. I'm a cheapskate Nikon shooter and I look UP to Voigtlander lenses. 🤣
How dare you comment on my channel.
You are obviously not a Leica photographer! We don’t make nor take photos - we create art with every single press of the shutter button. 😉
I only shoot Nikon
I'm a photographer, not a "Leica photographer."
I also have a Fuji X-Pro, and I use it the same way. I use the same padded case and backpack, as well as the same lenses with an M to X adapter. I don't consider it a "poor man's Leica" at all! I love it and will keep using it just like my M. In the end, the loudest voices are often the ones spewing negativity, but they are definitely not the majority.
Thanks for sharing! This video is a parody and meanest to be taken as such.
@@davidherring I know, you made it clear at the beginning of the video, and I like the relaxed tone you've given it. But since it's a parody, it's based on reality. Everyone should do what they please with their camera and their opinions.

Perhaps the most important thing for photographers to realize is that photography is hardly about them, but about what's in front of the camera. Then they can perhaps let go of all that snobbery.
This is the truth!
People who say they make photos are the same people who buy into the marketing that they dont own a watch, they just look after of it for the next generation🤡
Haha
Leica is a camera brand? Thought it was part of a song lyric, "I leica you and you leica me...
I Leica this comment.
Sony is super weird - fucking glass balls, smoke flares, upside down puddles and shit.
That’s my people, Matt.
the only thing I don't get is the high price, everything else I can take with a grain of salt 🤔
Leica is a premium camera for sure. But it’s a premium experience as well.
Gread vid. I think I'll stick to my Hassy and Nikon gear, ya weirdos. 😜
Haha but I want a Hassy too!
So much hate for nothing. Nothing constructive or helpful. (no, i'm not a leica shooter)
Cool thanks
Excellent video - and yes... 'make' just sounds weird and so wrong...
Right? Haha
😂😂😂Right on the money!! love it, and feel a little guilty for some of them myself. And as a Norwegian, I never say making a photo as it sounds idiotic in norwegian. But I do say taking a photograph instead of snapping a shot.
Great video
Thanks! As a non-Norwegian I never say making a photo as it sounds idiotic in English.
I've owned four Leicas. You're spot on. Obviously it's important to remember that every community has its gatekeepers, not just the Leica community, but the stereotype is correct.
It's all in good fun!
True story. There was never a battle like Canon Vs. Nikon. And its gone on for DECADES!!
Well, I think the idea of "making a photo" is typically reserved especially for the film Leica folks, especially those develop, scan/print their own negatives. Like there's a pride in actually doing all that on your own. Can't say for the digital Leica crowd cause I haven't owned one. Yet.
“Yet” haha
I use the term "make a photo" because I make a photo. I don't take a photo. Im not taking anything. Im using a tool, either my Leicas, my Nikons, or my Sony, to create something. "To create" is "to make", not "to take". Each tool has its own strengths. I am blessed that my father turned me on to Leica. For most of my life, Leica's were Dad's cameras, beyond my financial reach. But I learned what the Leica look is by using his. Now, I have my own, and what was his has become mine. It's not snobbish to like what a particular tool, however expensive(talk to Leica about that) does.
Fun video 😂, you lost me at Taylor Swift, Swiftie? 🤷🏼♂️
I have a 6yr old daughter ✌🏼
Leica is like Ferrari… not the fastest, not the most comfortable, not the most reliable, not the best on anything… but it will cost you arm and leg and your kidney 🤣🤣🤣
You hold the camera wrong, you make photos of the wrong subjects, you don’t have the right camera bag… you don’t deserve Leica !!! 😂😂😂
Haha obviously I don’t deserve this!
@@davidherringoh btw. you are wrong about M6, it is magical… it makes thousands of dollars disappear from your wallet 🤣
Leica photographers are much more "sophisticated" and "cultured", lol
We are.
May your comment be as snarky as my video.
Pretty sad when you have to announce it is satire ahead of time. Great video. Reminds me I need to cover my red dot.🔴
Better get it covered.
You definitely can't handle the Leica. Proceed to mail your Leica and Leica gear to us. We'll take good care of it.
Atte, someone who can't afford a Leica, and honestly would be too on edge doing street photography with gear more expensive than my yearly wage.
Ok post your SSN and address and we’ll get a package over to you. Oh and also your date of birth.
@@davidherring SSN: 12345678, Fake street 123, 30/3/1996
(Great vid, great humor!)
Ps: that's how the SSN number is written? Could you show me an example, perhaps yours? I'm from Argentina so I have no idea

As far as photo books...I have about 20. BUT one my first books was a William Eggeleston book...when I looked at the pics I was like wait...why is he famous?? lol. Since then I have bought books that more align with what I enjoy/aspire to/share an aesthetic with, etc. But also if you were an actor would you not watch plays, TV shows or movies? I feel photo books are similar...a way to enjoy the works of the greats or others you appreciate (similar to me watching your channel ;) ). Keep up the good work!
Thanks Steve! Maybe in 20yrs I’ll appreciate photo books more.
Only owning one Leica camera👎🏾...must have two at least.
Owning one is for peasants.
Hahaha I fckin love this 🤣 so refreshing
I just sold off my last two M bodies this month. Had to get away from the Leica people
Ah bummer! We're not THAT bad haha
Lol
Different class = waiting 5 minutes per photo for auto focus to nail the shot…
I wait 7.
how about people who trash those that trash leica users for not taking care of their cameras?
I like to trash myself, personally.
this was entertaining BUT you missed out the Hat people too, you know the one you are wearing at 7:35. for some reason Leica shooters love that hat too LOL. thank you for the video.
That’s because we’re bald and we fancy it up with hats.
@@davidherring 😂
Spot on - I have the M10-R, M6 & M3. I use them because they feel good in my hands and I can appreciate the nostalgia and build quality. A camera is just a box like you said and it's what you create with it that counts. Oh, and that Mustang....n I c e... I have to go and make a photo - HA...
What a lineup! But you better TAKE a photo like a thief.
I just joined the Leica community, and your video is spot on 😂
Welcome to the darkness.
I don’t cover my Leica Red Dot Emblem, just like I don’t put black tape on my Glock 😈
That’s dumb. I put red tape on mine.
@@davidherring LOL...
oberworth? nah that’s the cheap stuff! gotta go arte di mano or bust 😂
Oh man!
Thank you again.
Always
Nothing wrong with 'artisan' brands, its a budget 🤷♂
Nah bro you don’t put a Timex strap on a Rolex watch!
Hmmm. . . I know they spend a lot of money on a camera. So there is that.
We do, sir.
