i remember watching once for the first time. after the movie i went to another room to go about my day and out of nowhere I started crying. I knew instantly it was because of "when your mind is made up" set something free that was locked up for a long time in me
My dying mother turned me onto the movie Once, and from the moment that we watched it together it's been one of my favorites both in film and the soundtrack. I listened to the music a lot as therapy while she was dying and afterwards. Medicine.
I find myself back here every so often and I don't know exactly why. It's like hearing these two together gives me a glimpse of something real, something beautiful and raw. Something I'm not sure if I will ever experience for myself.
@Ale ARAVENA OBREQUE very happy to report that I saw the two of them tour this past year together again. They are both happily married and glen is expecting a child (or possibly had his child recently).
Marketa Irglova's voice is so quiet and reserved, yet it's filled with the same intense emotion as Glen Hansard's. I love that aspect of her. She's quite powerful. Her songs literally have taken my breathe away. She's so timid looking, but when she gets her hand on that guitar you can see her demeanor change into this confident woman who sings from her soul. I love their sound immensely!
Glen has got to be the most phenomenally talented vocalist in modern folk music. If you call it that, folk/pop, whatever. His vocal ability is just perfect.
I'd never heard of him or the swell season or marketa at all however, I was somewhat strungout and playing a lot of house parties and smaller gigs with just an acoustic when I woke up and started watching a movie that was already playing on t.v. It ended up being "Once" and it held me fascinated the entire time and their duet in the music store had me bawling. It was such an intimate experience even though it was a movie it felt extremely personal. Ever since then I've got nothing but respect for the two and am so glad they were recognized and rewarded for their talent which enabled them to keep creating.
Actually they broke up romantically in late 2008, so they wouldn't have been a couple anymore at this point. Obviously still a spark though. Tbh I'm still a little sad they broke up.
@@themoley91 Yes I'm still a bit sad about their split, Saw them together recently and they still have love in their eyes for each other despite moving on to other people, children etc.
If you love the movie as much as I do (and it’s one of my all time favorites). You owe to yourself to see the stage adaptation of it. The only negative about it is the fact that Glen and Marketa aren’t in it, but it is still brilliant. I think it is still touring (pre COVID-19 shutdown) it was supposed be in U.K. for 2020/2021. I saw it in Memphis, Tennessee in 2014.
I let my mum watch Once when it was on Netflix a few years back . She loved the movie . I lost her in September 2023 and am in deep mourning now . Watching that movie and listening to the soundtrack, whilst filling me with sad memories , also fills me with happiness and hope .
Can you imagine the partial tension... the memories- holding back tears... just sitting that close to each other? How hard this must have been after all these 2 have been through. I give them a LOT of credit that they stayed together in song, if not love. Beautiful and sad. Great people. You can catch the brief glances of respect if you watch closely. You have to remember...these songs are about their lives together, apart and those close to them. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through this. Very professional on the outside... but, chaos, joy, dread, new love, fright and a myriad of emotions and memories on the inside.
I simply can't cope with how much both of their voices, ever note, every lyric, every harmony, every moment they sing moves me and helps me feel pure emotion, it's incredible.
They are so beautiful together, at least that's how I feel after watching the movie about them. Real dream story, with all of its sorrow and happiness.
I think this is among the best acoustic live music performances recorded anywhere, at any time. I keep coming back to it. Again and again. It's so moving. Inspirational. Amazing.
The heavens are full of beautiful vocalists and musicians...but these guys (and girls) are the angels that are fixed firmly in my heart. I heard a very sweet saying today.."think of of yourself as a garden..and your soul the seeds...you can plant weeds or you can plant flowers....TheSwell Season simply plant flowers....beautiful. Mucho x!
I can't get enough of these two.. I've watched this video more than 20 times since it was uploaded. I keep coming back to it and their album... It always seems to find me when I need to hear it the most...
saw Once at a film festival at midnight back in 2007 and couldn't stop humming the songs....LOVE THEM! I hope to catch them in New Orleans at the House of Blues....Loved that they won an Oscar
I was at a Swell Season-concert. And it was awesome. He talked a bit, made the audience join in, his personality is fantastic. He was supposed to have 2 more songs. and after those songs, he said, well, we can take one more song, and after that, aah, we can take JUST one more song. after that. this is our last song! maybe! and he did another song after that:P it was epic!
That guitar looks like she's gone through WWI and WWII but yet had enough nerves to go through the vietnam. It's surprising that it still gives the sounds she's supposed to produce, kudos to takamine
Oussama Hridis Ha! I have that same guitar! It has a soft cedar top with no pick guard and the top just seems to disappear as the years go by. Great guitar.
I've watched a lot of Tiny Desk Concerts, and I enjoyed this one more than any other. Such genuine music straight from the heart. Amazing! Thanks so much!
It is the songs that I love but I love the love as well. Marketa and Glen seem to have to have the most purest form of what I mean in the first sentence. Actual people doing what they admire the most. So sincere, and their eyes give everything away. Indefinitely perfect, in every sense of the word.
Man, you can really tell that Glen's songs come from an honest place. Just watching his interactions (and reactions) with his audience, you can see his modest and almost deferential nature; this boys been hurt before.
nothing can beat their pair of voices. also, they seem like such good natured, unassuming kind of people, you could have a very pleasant conversation with - even as a stranger and feel utterly comfortable.
Passion, heart and genuineness is what makes them so compelling. I have had the pleasure of seeing them live and they are mind blowing. Try and catch them next time they are playing near you. Glen makes me proud to be Irish. The last song is my favourite. 32:30 til the end is spine tingling.
Lot of love to you guys. And many thanks... Before I listened to your music I didn't know what direction to take in music. I mean the musical genre. and how to sing what I wanted to say or how to say it. Here we are 2022, me with 41 years of age. And just now I'm writing songs and performing them. I need to be able to play them on the guitar. Maybe when I reach 85 I can play and sing my song for them. Thank you for giving us your love and sharing your passion and your message with the world. Very well received with love and affection, from Uruguay.
They have been on tour as The Swell Season for 3-4 years, since their first album "The Swell Season" came out in early 2006. That album is very good as well. Marketa wrote a beautiful music piece which also named The Swell Season, check it out.
That was single handly the most amazing thing ive heard. They are great, when im having a bad day i listen to them. Seeing them in concert was a once and a life time event..
Marketa and Glen are a great combination. Glen is so passionate when performing and Marketa has that eastern European reserve which counterbalances him nicely. They are both class acts and seem to be wonderful people.
This was my first spell with these two. Brand new to me, and I was completely taken by their songs, and the relationship that is so evident between them. Instant fan!! Brilliant.
For the longest time I believed that it was "Maybe I was wrong to hold you in these arms " .... I think it will remain that way for me until I've found somebody I can really say that I was born to hold in my arms
i had a stupid smile the entire time i was watching it.... i love how transparent they are in their emotions, they have beautiful souls and it shows...
Amazing...! They are very underrated I don't know how such music is not recognizable in the whole world and music like Justin Bieber is world famous...!
When I listen to music, the first thing I think of is does the music emotionally move me. The wonderful thing is you may find this as I have. The impossible happened for me and it can happen for you too Matt.
the frames have that affect on me, Glens other band.

I see a lot of quiet strength in her. I don't think she knows how special and rare she is, which of course only adds to her charm and beauty.
you really gotta give props to marketa for managing to harmonise with the animal noises coming out of glen on that last one.
I always like to see Swell Season era's Marketa as a warm blanket wrapping around the sharp knife that is Glen.

Glen seems to put his all into every performance, no matter if it is in a big stadium or at a tiny desk. Thanks for this, NPR.
14 years ago and all these songs still make me beam
I love how Marketa is always so calm, in stark contrast from Glen who can reach near-nuclear intensity.
These two sure were in love. They can't even look at one another without breaking into silly grins.
So true!
They WERE at the time yes, but they split up later...
Actually they broke up romantically in late 2008, so they wouldn't have been a couple anymore at this point. Obviously still a spark though. Tbh I'm still a little sad they broke up.
SAME. I don't think I'll ever get over them, really.
@@themoley91 Yes I'm still a bit sad about their split, Saw them together recently and they still have love in their eyes for each other despite moving on to other people, children etc.

@@jujuonthemoon They were at one point. The Swell Season documentary follows them on tour and you get to see some of the tension.
These guys are true musicians.... this is music!!!
32:37 Glen's face...if I ever feel that sort of passion for anything, even for one second, my life will be well-lived.
Marketa Irglova is so graceful !! .. glen hansard is divine ! ... love these guys

I really loved the film, watched it several times in a row. glad to see he's still using his battered guitar which was also featured in the film

Glen Hansard: a man who rocks so hard, he doesn't need a distortion pedal.
