I imagine if Van ever asked me point blank what song I wanted to hear, I'd go completely blank at the sheer improbability of it all. Well played, Glen, for keeping your wits about you!
It's so amazing and so funny to me to hear Glen talk about his experience with his idol in this way because Glen is basically my musical hero and I had a somewhat similar experience with him at one of his shows last month when he pulled me up onstage to sing Falling Slowly with him. And like he said after experiencing something like that it's more than just meeting someone you admire, it's walking away a changed musician.
(8 years later...) And actually since all musicians are basically conduits for passing on their own musical influences and encounters to those like yourself, who model themselves after them...you've been getting bits of Van, Dylan, and Leonard Cohen when you listen to Glen.
I could listen to Glen tell these anecdotes all day long at any time. Like his first meeting with Dylan, and the guitar he gave him. Life moments that anyone would have wanted to live. Truly a beautiful story with Van Morrison and an experience of a lifetime as Glen described it. Thanks for sharing this clip!
At 2:45, had Hansard been thinking at the time Van chided him, he could have said OK, and started singing, "You put your hand in mine, and then you say hello, and I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so, and any one can tell, you think you know my well, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW ME". Van would have either loved him or killed him. Anyway a great and enviable story. Thanks for posting it.
as someone who holds Van Morrison in the highest regard, I can fully imagine this experience and what it would feel like as a musician. Absolutely magical! Well told sir! A fortunate man indeed!
Listening to the story is so incredible. The whole time it feels like you’re in the room with him experiencing this. I was imagining doing the same thing with Van , George Jones or Gregg Allman. What an experience that must have been. 🍺🍺
Now that´s the kind of story I want to hear. I´m sure it made Glen the musician he is today. So happy there´s nothing that could ever take this experience away from him.
One of the best stories I've ever heard. Jamming with Van is a fantasy of mine, and I just got as close to it as I ever will... My viola teacher in the eighties was Nathan Rubin, who toured with Van for the "Too Late to Stop Now" tour... Thanks to the guy who uploaded this!
Awesome story...even hearing it 11 or so years later. Van is “An enigma wrapped in a paradox and shrouded in a conundrum", it seems. And no doubt a genius.
This is a great story,Van Morrison can be a very difficult person, he seems to make a point of being rude. Glen was very brave not to just take off still it worked out in the end.
Fascinating. From this story Glen seems a charming, decent warm "human" bloke and Van seems more than a bit "techy" and playing the distant artiste. Both are great artists, but I'd rather have a conversation or a pint with Glen.
What a GREAT story! Beautifully told. To some level in my opinion Glen has more depth to his music and personality than Van. Don't take me wrong, Van is awesome. Just saying Glen's music is amazing and full of energy. Every performance I see, he's so genuinely in the moment and everyone listening can feel it. And off course Marketa is always there, focused, very supportive - every moment their eyes meet. It's a joy to watch these guys play.
Van's attitude and actions towards Glen was an example of how the Music Industry treated Van (and probably everyone else) in the beginning of his/their career(s). A good lesson for Glen to not expect "special star treatment" if ever he would become a recording artist. "Good voice, good songs, blah, blah, blah!" Another way to say, "You're not special. Play your songs.Publish your own songs. Don't look for special treatment".
what a great story Van is known for being a bit of a prickly pear I've watched many interviews with him and the interviewer usually finds it hard to get anything out of him
I really wonder why Van is so grouchy alot of the time....he's a very spiritual guy from what I gather but that doesn't necessarily translate into kind, empathic, blah blah blah. But I'm always wondering what makes my favorite artists tick...Oh well...
It really makes you think, the way that first really painful encounter with Van led to the much better one... But he had to be encouraged not to run away. There's a lesson in that.
Ha classic . I played a couple of songs one night with glen and when I took up the guitar he walked out too so it must be a thing . After a while he played some of his hits and it was aweee sommeee . He told us bono had advised him not to be so accessible to the public and there we were drinking pints of stout .glen was slow enough to buy a round
this is amazing! Do you have more footage of this interview? Because seriously, what he said about coming away from that experience as a changed man and musician: that's how I felt after I saw him in concert the first time. So wonderful.
Through the times,, we will all have stories to tell.. Glen you from the beginning, to me will always be the story teller. Having the pleasure to know you has been the most amazing and the most impressionable pages that could ever fill my life. Sir your a legend your most humblest of fans and friends Philip you've gotta have faith love and respect to you and yours eternaly Bless you
Van turned 50 in 95, when Glen was 25. Not calling his story into question, but I think he's mixed up either what Van was turning, or how old he was himself.
I imagine if Van ever asked me point blank what song I wanted to hear, I'd go completely blank at the sheer improbability of it all. Well played, Glen, for keeping your wits about you!
This story slays me. Gotta listen to Glen Hansard now.
I will NEVER tire of hearing this story. An amazing experience and an awesome telling of it!
What a wonderful surprise video to find on YouTibe - Thank you.
Insomnia was a gift tonight. Thank you. Kindred spirits and comments.

This just made me cry. You are one extremely lucky guy Glen.
I could watch that endlessly.
Van Morrison is one of my ultimate favorites---big fan of Glen Hansard too!
I love this story, and I love the way Glen tells it.
Hansard is one of the coolest humans ever ! Love his voice, love his songs, blah, blah, blah !!!! :)

I don't often use this word but, ....wow ! .....that must have been a set of special lessons from a special teacher ?
Great story. Love Glen.
Oh, Glen! Baptism of fire!
Awesome story...even hearing it 11 or so years later. Van is “An enigma wrapped in a paradox and shrouded in a conundrum", it seems. And no doubt a genius.
Cool story. Glen deserved that great experience.
Great interview! Awesome story! Thanks for posting!
"Of course I am blaming myself because I'm Catholic." Love it as a former one. :)
Love it as one. :)
Glen and Marketa & other- BEAUTIFUL-SOULED everywhere- God bless you!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this

The greatest story ever told
Fantastic!
amazing story, I was on the edge of my seat haha
My friend is also a Guinness.
Or is a Guinness your only friend?
This is a great story,Van Morrison can be a very difficult person, he seems to make a point of being rude. Glen was very brave not to just take off still it worked out in the end.
What a great story..
this story is honestly incredible
I want to be him too. To spend that time with Van would be incredible.
Fascinating. From this story Glen seems a charming, decent warm "human" bloke and Van seems more than a bit "techy" and playing the distant artiste. Both are great artists, but I'd rather have a conversation or a pint with Glen.
Van Morrison is notorious for ahem, being a few tools short in the social graces department. On stage as well. Polar opposite from Glen.
@@sundromos9456 I love his music, but he's without doubt a bit of a prick. No excuse for being such an asshole toward a young polite guy like Glen.
Great story about an incredible experience... hours at the feet of a master. That's as good as life gets.
Great story. That's the reward you can get when you go for something you really want even when it's scary to do so.
How Glen understands Van GodBlessLovePeaceToAllNations
What a wonderful story, it sounds so typical of many have heard of Van Morrison, that it is ALL about the Music and nothing else.
Amazing!
incredible story, love it
Great story.

Beautiful..
That describes Van beautifully "A Master at his Work"
Brilliant story!
i LOVE this story!!!!!!!

Van Morrison was born in 1945, and Hansard in 1970, so when Van Morrison was 50, Glen Hansard was 25
a wonderful story
Great well told story
What's great story, " you don't know me" private lessons from Van, how cool is that.
Glen Catholic guilt been there. Kevin Pollak what a great interview.
Just a wonderful story!
It really makes you think, the way that first really painful encounter with Van led to the much better one... But he had to be encouraged not to run away. There's a lesson in that.
WOW ! thank you for sharing :) x
Somehow I knew he was going to say One Irish Rover lol...that's the song I would ask for
So poignant, great album

Confirming Van's temperament; not always easy to get along with. Clearly understanding Van's genius. The master, the Belfast Cowboy.
nice story !
"Days like this" 1995 "you don't know me"
Wow.
a very brief version in 10 minutes
pure hansard. :)
And it was edited down
@meszy88 Perhaps you've never heard an Irishman tell a story? This is TOTALLY brief. ;)
sweet!
Pollak is so much better then Charlie Rose and any modern day PBS phonies
Wow

That's SO cool how he came away as a changed musician! Sometimes that happens to me after looking at someone's great artwork.
I'm not just friends with a Guinness... but, several of them! It's a love affair I'm having actually!
Hilarious! :)
Irglova thinking :"Hey I'm here too!!!"

Legend . Van levitates ❤️
i subscribed just because of your username.
i guess to make a long storry short i give you a brief version : ) 10 minute video : )
Van turned 50 in 95, when Glen was 25. Not calling his story into question, but I think he's mixed up either what Van was turning, or how old he was himself.
Does it matter? This might be the best story that I have ever heard.
@Paddiemae : ) : ) : ) : ) too right mate : )
"Nice voice, nice songs, blah, blah, blah." Sounds like Van should be judging on American Idol with Simon!
Pmsl
Better than jamming with the Beatles you won the lottery that night
I've no idea who this bloke is, but I want to be him.
look up "swell season into the mystic". hes the singer and they absolutely kill it
He was Outspan fookin Foster in The Commitments too
Hi many thanks !
Could somebody please tell me when exactly this interview took place (date, time and television station?)
many thanks in advance !
Not sure what it means by "used too 'boosque' his songs?"
+jo blo Busk. Performing in the street.
Busk. He used to busk. That means playing on the streets for tips.
My friend likes a Guinness.
Tim Ward filled with crap now. high fructose etc
for the zombies.
As they say ...................... Never meet your hero.
The interviewer says to Glen you can't do an Irish accent ,😳😳
dynamite story best ever
Cleaning windows ,

I was in the kitchen.
I'm Spartacus...
This video just made up for a year of RUclips disappointments and time wasters
