I met a woman very much like Marketa in 1979. Just as sweet, charming, and irresistable. I was luckier than Glen's character, because we had 17 years together, but then I got to feel the pain and yearning he felt at the end of the film. All this is why this song and movie haunt me so much. You don't fall in love with another woman after loving and being loved by one like Marketa or the love of my life. (Sigh)
I am sorry to reply so late, but only now saw your questions. The answer is SO complex that it would take many pages to try. We each gave so much to the other that i believe she realized that in the long run, to accomplish what we were meant to it was best we do so separately. 23 years later we are still great friends living on opposite coasts. I will never give up the hope of loving and being loved again some day.
My first husband and I saw this in the theater during a thing festival as we were saying goodbye to our marriage and youth. I'm not sure I've ever cried that much.
I just went to Ireland with my gf, she made me discover this song. We sung and played it all the time on public pianos during our trip. Now that I'm going back to the city where I study (300km far from her) I'm listening to it on repeat. She fills my heart in a way I didn't know were possible.
Glen literally saved my life with his music. I was in a bad place but I went to see the swell season live and it changed my life. I continued to write and record.. thank you Glen.
I absolutely nowhere you are comming from ,I lost my love I no else but me destroyed and broke everything that was lovely ,she held my hand tight and we both watched this togther she is gone and I’m left alone with only this song
A rare thing in a movie that everybody is basically lovely to one another and end up bringing out their excellent best. The tension is all in the question "how good can we be? Can we trust each other to bring our best? Can we succeed in this moment?"
After all these years, this song is still so beautiful to listen to…And somehow it makes me appreciate what Life has to offer, the people we meet & the experiences we share~ Thank u for making this beautiful song~❤
This song reminds me of the easier times. I don't want to grow older anymore, and I'm only 17. Feels like it was yesterday when I played this song over and over in the summer and felt happy, when it's really many years ago. This song takes me back to those days, and I miss them so fucking much.
I forgot that I commented on this video! I am fine now, by the way. But I am happy that I never have to be 17 again, that was rough. I will be 24 soon. Time flies :)
My girlfriend once sent me this, everytime I come and listen this, my eyes goes moist and a tear or two drops. I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me, and how much I love her.
A girl I knew in high school sang this at a school talent show, and I immediately fell in love with this song. I feel people always pull what they need to hear from music. "You've suffered enough and warred with yourself. It's time you won." I will always come back to music that moves me.🖤
I have grown up in the industry...yes..all have to come together...but if the lyrics aren't there, there isn't a story...I'm a writer myself...but all have their gifts...and coming together of all talents makes a true wonderful song...Love and God Bless
Sal G As a writer, singer and instrumentalist I must tell you that great music in itself can absolutely make a great story and fill the soul. Some of the greatest works ever created are instrumental pieces written by some of the greatest composers of all time. No one element is "everything." Beautiful is everything. And that can be a lyric, a chord progression, a melody, or even silence.
I agree with Sal (also a songwriter, instrumentalist). This song is a perfect marriage of lyrics and music. It's been my favorite song, and the song I am most moved by since the first time I heard it performed.
I love that this film is so so independent but the passion of telling story with their music is huge, i cried a lot watching this and this one film enough for me to care for them characters. This is the best example of making a film with the intention of showing your love especially towards the art of music and how you want your story to be told to everybody, and i'm so so happy that they accomplished their dream.
I love the absolute lack of sentimentalism in the movie. It completely avoids all the predictable themes and tropes - which makes both it, and this song, haunting.
Me an my wife got in a fight when this movie first came out years ago. I'm laying there at 3am this comes on HBO. I couldn't quit watching!! Went to the bedroom an hugged the shit out of her!! So glad people are still appreciating it!!
I remember the first time watched this beautiful movie, I cried so hard in silence when the movie ended. I hold my breath in the last scene when the man tried to call the girls before he departed. I can not describe how this humble movie left such a deep feeling after it finished. Beautifully executed with memorable songs. I even recall that feeling again this time while I typing. Sigh..
This was a gorgeous film. The cinematography, the very simple story line, the acting and obviously the soundtrack were all phenomenal. The chemistry between these two actors was also so amazing! is dóigh liom fós gurb é seo an scannán Éireannach is fearr riamh.
I love the film but the cinematography definitely wasn't very strong, understandably so because the shoestring budget. Still loved the film but the way it looked did sort of take me aback at first. I got used to it and am very happy I finished it, as it was excellent. In no small part due to the music being so great to carry the film on its shoulders.
Please can someone tell me? I watched this movie and I absolutely love it. And I am not sure one thing . In the movie , the piano she get at the end is given by the male character right?
Just saw Glen live last night. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years, I was shocked when he came out with a full on grey beard, than I realized I was in high school when this movie came out. Time
when I met my second husband we lived in adjoining states and every other week met halfway. After about a year, I get to the hotel we always stayed in, got my room key and as I entered the room, it was pretty dark but lots of candles, he was at the window with his back to me and as he turned to face me, I saw a lavender ribbon rose I had admired in a shop in his hand and this song was playing. He crossed the room, put his forehead against mine and said noah, I find I am falling very deeply in love with you, is that okay? I musted a whispered yes and he kissed me then said (in his typical way) whewww, now that that is over lets go get dinner. I got 10 beautiful, awesome and perfect years before he passed. I cry everytime I hear this but I also smile at the memory.
I watched this film when I was 17. I was heartbroken at that time. About three years later, in Athens I fell in love with a really beautiful and nice person. Honestly I’ve never met such a kind person in my life. My new life has begun with a new love.
In 2009, I was going through a difficult time in my life when I stumbled upon this movie on my screen. After watching it, I was inspired by the songs and felt like a different person with the courage to face my situation and figure out how to overcome it. As time passed, I stopped hearing the song, but recently came across it again and it brought back memories. It was like a refreshing moment that reminded me of how I overcame and faced that situation, making me stronger. Thanks, Glen and Marketa!
I moved to Ireland 6 months ago. Couple weeks ago our college organized an event for international students and they streamed this movie. At first I was like: oh so they want to promote local films, eh, ok. After I watched it I was so emotional and overwhelmed. There's something about this movie, warmth and comfort, yet sadness, somehow.
I remember being so low 11 years ago, at 18 figuring life out and had just started to live out in the big scary world on my own! Had no idea the adventures and friends I'd make, it was on those lonely nights in my room I'd listen to this on my own and now listening to it again at nearly 30 years old is a completely different experience! Music has a way of taking you full circle ♥️

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
Well, you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along
Take it all
I played the cards too late
Now you're gone
Thank you so much

And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
[Chorus:]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud
👍🏻👍🏻❤
thanks ;)
고맙다~~🤘
can't believe it has only 4,8 mil
I dare to say this is one of the best romantic songs ever written.
This movie is like a warm hug in a cold place
I sang this song to my future wife when I was asking her about her "yes" . This song will be here forever ❤️
(Sigh)
May I ask what happened that caused your relationship to end?
I'm curious too
I am sorry to reply so late, but only now saw your questions. The answer is SO complex that it would take many pages to try. We each gave so much to the other that i believe she realized that in the long run, to accomplish what we were meant to it was best we do so separately. 23 years later we are still great friends living on opposite coasts. I will never give up the hope of loving and being loved again some day.
Zeppolino100 thank you for the reply.. your story havent ended yet im sure you will find love again!
@@deborahsiahaan9261 Thank you much for your kindness. I remain open for that each and every day. :-)
This might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
2008 Oscar winner. Best Original Song.
My first husband and I saw this in the theater during a thing festival as we were saying goodbye to our marriage and youth. I'm not sure I've ever cried that much.
Vim pelo zerão cantando na Live tamo junto 🙃
I just went to Ireland with my gf, she made me discover this song. We sung and played it all the time on public pianos during our trip. Now that I'm going back to the city where I study (300km far from her) I'm listening to it on repeat. She fills my heart in a way I didn't know were possible.
@Miles Duffus we just temporarily moved together because of Covid restrictions, so yes
Well we broke up
@@Robthereaper96 oh no, why?
@@queeniefatimalara5816 I wish I knew. It was a healthy breakup thankfully
@@Robthereaper96 Sorry to hear that. I’m going through the same thing, I hope 2022 will be a better year.
Thank you Sehun for bring me here :')
This was a once in a lifetime song, just wonderful.
It was, once in a lifetime--for them and all the world.
C'était ? C'est.
끊임없이 나 자신을 미워했던 시간.
스물아홉 그때 내 노래
지금은 행복하시죠?😅
내 젊은 시절 떠나간 옛 사랑을 그리워하며… 난 어느덧 60대.. ❤
No song like it! No duet like it! Slays me EVERY time
Glen literally saved my life with his music.
Movie and song fused two polar things: hope and despair. Beautiful yet heartbreaking at the same time.
This song reminds me of the easier times. I don't want to grow older anymore, and I'm only 17. Feels like it was yesterday when I played this song over and over in the summer and felt happy, when it's really many years ago. This song takes me back to those days, and I miss them so fucking much.
Enjoy these years, later on you will miss them, and so on...
how do you feel now when you hear this?
I forgot that I commented on this video! I am fine now, by the way. But I am happy that I never have to be 17 again, that was rough. I will be 24 soon. Time flies :)
13 years and i am still falling in love with this song.
My girlfriend once sent me this, everytime I come and listen this, my eyes goes moist and a tear or two drops. I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me, and how much I love her.
She knows brother!
Aap khush qismat thy.. Humy tu randomly mil gya ❤❤❤
Tell her.
A girl I knew in high school sang this at a school talent show, and I immediately fell in love with this song. I feel people always pull what they need to hear from music. "You've suffered enough and warred with yourself. It's time you won." I will always come back to music that moves me.🖤
😂❤❤❤😊
Words can't describe how much this song touches my heart.
Oh Tandy. How I miss you and your antics.
Lyrics are everything...people seem to forget...Love and Blessings to all....
Lyrics with melody, harmony, and feeling are everything.
I agree...that's not what we were talking about...But I agree...Have a Blessed day!!!
I agree with Sal (also a songwriter, instrumentalist). This song is a perfect marriage of lyrics and music. It's been my favorite song, and the song I am most moved by since the first time I heard it performed.
listening to this song, watching the movie, always brightens up my day! thank you!
You are loved!
You are not alone:)
Listening to song, in my cramped apartment, with rain outside my window
How are you nerissa
God loves you-you are never alone. I'll keep you in my prayers man
Feel free to reach out if you need anything :)
This song means so much to me. It reminds me of the time me and my dad would watch this film 'Once' . RIP DAD ❤️
I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️ I hope you enjoyed watching the film with him
What a movie to start 2023! So glad I came across it on Netflix. Beautiful songs 🥰
I saw Glen in the Leonard Cohen documentary, googled him and remembered how much I loved this movie 👍
Me an my wife got in a fight when this movie first came out years ago. I'm laying there at 3am this comes on HBO. I couldn't quit watching!! Went to the bedroom an hugged the shit out of her!! So glad people are still appreciating it!!

ありがとう。
I remember the first time watched this beautiful movie, I cried so hard in silence when the movie ended. I hold my breath in the last scene when the man tried to call the girls before he departed. I can not describe how this humble movie left such a deep feeling after it finished. Beautifully executed with memorable songs. I even recall that feeling again this time while I typing. Sigh..
Amen! I did, too!!!!
This was a gorgeous film. The cinematography, the very simple story line, the acting and obviously the soundtrack were all phenomenal. The chemistry between these two actors was also so amazing!
is dóigh liom fós gurb é seo an scannán Éireannach is fearr riamh.
I love Ireland 🇮🇪 is brea liom Eireann. ❤️
@@septemberrainfall7572 yes. That is what he goes to speak to the shop owner about “can we talk about something back here?”
She was 17 when this was filmed, and 13 when he started pursuing her.
Just saw Glen live last night. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years, I was shocked when he came out with a full on grey beard, than I realized I was in high school when this movie came out. Time

This song makes me feel so many emotional things...
when I met my second husband we lived in adjoining states and every other week met halfway.
Awww thats such a lovely story and im sorry for your loss are good things always meant to end somehow? :(
This made me cry. :) That is so sweet. I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you get to see your husband again one day in heaven.

One of my favorite movies forever ☘️💚
Im here because of the cover of Lia and Lee Mujin and I LOVE THIS
I watched this film when I was 17. I was heartbroken at that time. About three years later, in Athens I fell in love with a really beautiful and nice person. Honestly I’ve never met such a kind person in my life. My new life has begun with a new love.
Honestly every cover I’ve heard of this song doesn’t reach the original. I’m tearing up within the first 30 seconds
*Their voices feels like an old friend, or like a Christmas morning. Every time.*
Thank you lia for introducing me this song
In 2009, I was going through a difficult time in my life when I stumbled upon this movie on my screen. After watching it, I was inspired by the songs and felt like a different person with the courage to face my situation and figure out how to overcome it. As time passed, I stopped hearing the song, but recently came across it again and it brought back memories. It was like a refreshing moment that reminded me of how I overcame and faced that situation, making me stronger. Thanks, Glen and Marketa!
My obsession with this song is why I'm listening to this song...
Thanks, Mike and Tandy😢😢😢😢 ❤
I moved to Ireland 6 months ago. Couple weeks ago our college organized an event for international students and they streamed this movie. At first I was like: oh so they want to promote local films, eh, ok. After I watched it I was so emotional and overwhelmed. There's something about this movie, warmth and comfort, yet sadness, somehow.
I know this song has been a long time. But, because Nct made me hear this song again
I'm tough song religius
One of the "perfect" movies to me. Beautiful soundtrack.
One of my favorite movies ever. John Carney's other movies are good, but movies like this only come around Once.
Thanks liaa
How can anyone not love this song!?
I remember being so low 11 years ago, at 18 figuring life out and had just started to live out in the big scary world on my own! Had no idea the adventures and friends I'd make, it was on those lonely nights in my room I'd listen to this on my own and now listening to it again at nearly 30 years old is a completely different experience! Music has a way of taking you full circle ♥️
"eyes that know me" - what a beautiful line.
I want this song in my funeral
Watching a korean variety show called "My name is Gabriel" and heard this song. It's the first time I ever heard of it and it's really, really good! ❤❤❤
