If overlays and focus is working but the screen isn’t, your most likely culprit (even if it worked on past canon cameras) is the 3rd party adapter and an older ef lens. He's not the only one with issues. Duade Paton is a well regarded bird photog who has some issues too especially with noise and dynamic range (compared to the R5 it was a decline). So glad I got the R6 II. Saved so much money and it's a dream to use with no real downsides for photos. Video is also excellent with the best 4k60 around... Clog2 and 4k120 would be nice for video but not the end of the world as 4k60 and Clog3 really are fantastic for 95% of things.
@@77dris There is one real issue, and it is the crappy dynamic range in conjunction with electronic shutter (which is almost unavoidable because precapture and blackout-free VF only works with ES). But you get other benefits like a crazy sensor readout speed. Duade nailed it. The difference is that Duade knows his stuff and makes great videos. This guy here looks like he just stepped up from a Fujifilm Qicksnap and got lost.
@@hippodackl1521 Crazy? The 4 year old A1 is faster...with 50mp...and it's wait, 4 years old tech! The 2 year old R3 is also faster (albeit with only 24mp). The R3 also doesn't have any of the dynamic range issues that the R5II does. I have said it many times, but Canon is struggling with sensor tech and falling behind Sony. The only thing keeping them ahead at the moment is the AF performance and being able to adapt older EF glass. That's it.
All of your issues with the camera have nothing to do with the camera and everything to do with YOU and your out of date accessories and skill set. I have an R5 Mark II and understand the battery issues you raised but they don’t take 3 hours to charge. What charger are you using? When I shoot video for extended periods of time I use a V Mount battery and it’s fine. Your R7 that records for 3 hours - What bit rate is it recording at and what’s the quality of the footage like? I’d also question your decision to pick up a new camera in the middle of an event and use it straight out of the box. Thats not very professional. And in a live event you’re using an old third party lens and SD cards that you, yourself claim to be ‘not great’? Maybe eliminate points of failure on your end and THEN try the camera again before posting?

Others have also criticised Canon's menu changes and obfuscation of settings within the menus. Since a charger comes with the camera, it is safe to assume that the OP is using the supplied R5II charger with the battery. LiONs are not a good battery technology imho and the sooner we move away from this tech, the better (high fire and even explosive risk, they lose charge without warning just to name 2 design issues with the battery format). An older EF lens should work - that is what the EF to R adaptor is meant for. If they worked on an older R series body, then they should work on a newer body, unless Canon is deliberately stopping 3rd party products from working. The same applies to 3rd party batteries. A battery simply holds charge and discharges a charge, nothing more and nothing less. If the voltage and amperage are correct, then it should work. if said lens worked on DSLRs and older R series bodies, then it is compliant with the EF protocols. I guess some people aren't very bright when making assertions online.
@@davepastern This is technically wrong. With i.e. some bad timings in the protocol they might still work on an EF DSLR but not on a quick camera! The faster the camera is in AF and IS the more relevant is top notch timing in the communication between the lens and the camera. I guess you are one of those exposing to be not very bright - technically seen.

Nothing has changed with regards to the protocol between cameras. modern mirrorless cameras do have a faster sensor readout speed (in most cases) in ES mode than their older DSLR counterparts. This of course, is irrelevant in MS mode. So, easy to test. AF speed is linked to sensor readout speed btw. The AF system is limited by the line by line sensor readout speed, which is why the R7 struggles with AF vs the full frame faster sensor readout speed Canon offerings. FPS also affects AF performance too (confirmed by Canon CPS Australia actually). So, shooting in H+ mode on my R3 with my mark 1 500f4 prime will result in less accurate AF performance than in H mode (ES of course). I have again tested this after Canon divulged this information rather extensively with my setup and can confirm that it is an issue. I now shoot in H mode in ES. Of course, when I get a mark 2 prime, I will shift back to H+ mode, since this limitation is in regards to the older mark 1 lenses, which have much older AF motors with much poorer torque (another thing that can affect AF performance). And yes, the translation from EF to RF mount also has a AF hit, more on speed than reliability, but it is consistent for all EF lenses, Canon or 3rd party (unless the lens had issues with AF performance on older EF DSLR bodies of course).

What rubbish you talk, you said at the start you charged the battery for an hour and said it was 75% charged then you say three hours later it was still charging. You can buy a Hahnel cube pro charger that will charge 2 new canon batteries in two hours.
this is not necessarily true. Most modern batteries have chips onboard to dictate the charging rate, irrespective of which charger you are using. If the battery says reduce current charge, then the charger will comply. That is how electronics work. it's why you can pair a 15v/2a charger with a product that only requires 1.5a - it will ONLY ever draw the required current charge. It is also not unusual for modern LIOns to charge to ~80% very fast and then take forever for the remaining 25%. My R3 batteries exhibit this exact same problem. And they did some from brand new, using the Canon official charger that came with my R3. I suspect you don't know what you are talking about, which is ironic since you use the term "rubbish".

Int6eresting. I just bought a Nikon Z8 system and am blown away by the technology. It seems that when a company is on the ropes and its death seems imminent, that the engineers produce their best work. The reverse can also be true; the market leaders tend to be conservative, and rarely produce breakthrough engineering. Hope everything gets sorted out.
the Z8 is a cracking camera, congrats. It's all but the equal of the R5II other than being ~ USD $700 cheaper and readily available for purchase, including accessories. Oh, and Nikon is brining real firmware upgrades that improve the camera, not the crap that Sony & Canon spew out that are worthless. Depending upon what you shoot, and your wallet size, Nikon has stunning lenses too, especially if you are a wildlife photographer. Canon and Sony could learn a thing or 2.
@@davepastern Another advantage to the Nikon system is that they've opened the platform to 3rd party lens manufacturers, which really expands the selection. Canon has locked out 3rd party manufacturers, and Sony is playing games - yeah, your Tamron lens will work, but deliberately more slowly than native Sony lenses. And of course, all Nikon mount lenses built since 1959 will fit on any Z camera by means of an adapter. So the selection of glass is stunning. I have a lot of respect for Canon technology, but for me, right now, the Z8 made the most sense. The autofocus - with the new firmware 2.01 update, it blows me away. Before I can even compose the picture, it's found the eyes and focused the lens. Just wow.

just cos it's Canon doesn't mean it's "quality" mate. Look at that 75-300 (terrible QA) or the mark 1 24-105 EF with the aperture ribbon fuck ups. And they still didn't entirely fix that with the mark 2 version of the lens, and it's still an issue with the RF version of this lens, albeit much improved with lower failure rates.
1. known problem with the Black screen, which should be fixed now with a patch. Others have reported this (Duade Paton, Ordinary Filmmaker to name 2 that I am aware of). 2. with regards to the video recording time, were both set to 4k/1080p or was the R5 set to a higher resolution video recording format (say, 8k or 6k oversampled?) 3. the battery issue is a real pain in the ass yes. I do feel Canon did this deliberately to make more $$$, and not because of technical reasons. Also, no 3rd party battery will work with the camera, AFAIK. Canon is doing an Epson and unlawfully using IP to block 3rd party competitors in what is an anti-competitive move (and One might argue, monopolistic too, using their 50% market share to force consumers into their ecosystem and not 3rd party solutions). Why the US DOJ isn't investigating is beyond me (well, I know the answer, corrupt US senators and a pro business democratic AND republic movement). Sorry you're having so many issues. I upgraded from the R5 because I shoot wildlife and I wanted pre-capture, 30 fps, and better auto focus. Plus better frame rate to reduce RS. I got all four with the R% ll. I was able to get extra batteries so no issue there. 4k 120 works flawlessly. If I run out of battery and I use the old NH I lose pre capture and video. But by that time I'm too tired to care.
how are you finding the AF vs the original R5? I don't care for mega high FPS (not a spray and pray shooter, sorry) and pre-capture doesn't really grab me either. Pros have timed shots for years with much older cameras.
@@davepastern I find it faster and stickier. I do have it set to sticky tracking. I only shoot at 20 fps. I haven't used the precapture very much so I really can't say. However the autofocus is much improved. I shoot wildlife so I can't answer to the sports stuff. All and all I'm happy with the upgrade. Con-Battery life. Buy extras.
You got a glitched sample - it happens. But what you didn't understand about setting the quality and size - I don't know. Canon hasn't changed that for centuries. Backward incompatibility with batteries is sad, I don't argue with that. Canon is greedy. But LP-E6 always took a long time to charge, nothing new. What's bad about this camera is that Canon is trying to balance between image quality, speed, and at the same time they continue the tradition of noise reduction in RAW in order to show inflated numbers for the dynamic range in tests, and they now have a hard time doing all this, they lose their balance. And their lenses are now doing roughly the same thing - using RAW resources to show a "nice picture". For example, there has never been such a distorted 35 1.4 in the world. Canon invented it. And its correction profile cuts off 10-15% of the image area to straighten the picture. Again canon is faking and cheating. This is a bad trend. Canon has been lagging behind in image quality for a long time, but everything used to be honest and they didn’t try to hide or fake anything at the expense of raw image quality resources. But now they seem to have forgotten that a camera is not an iPhone, it is a tool and we don’t need a “nice picture” from a camera, we need high-quality raw material, and a “nice picture” is the work of the photographer, not the camera.
At the end of my career, I can say one thing. Never buy the latest and greatest and untried by too few or the wrong "few". lol.. Good luck! It was all I could do to upgrade from the Canon 6D to the Canon R6 and this was only less than 2 years ago! Why fix it if it ain't broke?!
The black/green screen issue is funky and it's the first time I've seen this. About long recording sessions: I can't speak for the R5II yet but with my other Canon cameras I've always used either USB C Power or a dummy battery. Both can be used with wall power or with larger batteries. This enables basically unlimited video recording and I've successfully done multi hour recording and streaming sessions without draining the camera battery.
I took delivery of the R5 ll a month ago and have used it almost every day since. I have not experienced any issues thus far. Certainly not a black screen.

so 4 minutes just talking about the battery and why the camera wasn't ready for use the moment you took it out of the box. Which btw it was, just throw a powerbank or an older battery and it works. Even a 25-50% battery is enough for start.
Since I am the contented owner of an R7 and R6II, I just tuned in to hear that rant as I work at my computer. :-) It is why I tend to be slow to accept the new, waiting a while on products and firmware updates. I'm good with letting others sort out the nonsense (e.g., Surprise! No batteries!). Photography is a hobby, and not a career, so I have that "luxury." I wonder if you will see a difference in performance with an RF lens. The Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 (1) is kind of "long in the tooth." I had that lens on my R, and it performed well, especially for the price, but time marches on.
I was wondering too why he still using the older gen of Tamron when he's already using adapter. Like at this point if he does make some money, then he should get the new RF 28-70 f2.8 STM since it has weather sealing and the best bet for 1099.

Lol I am a Canon user and I don't think Nikon or Sony are any worse or better, they are all great once you're used to using them. Nikon offers better dynamic range than Canon, Canon offers better autofocus than Nikon. The more important thing is planning on which lenses you want in your kit and how much you are willing to spend.
@@wilburdesouza actually, the Z9 and Z8 outperform the R5 and R3 with regards to AF performance - check out Mathieu Gasquet's review on the R3 (which has the best Canon AF performance until the R1 was released). Even Jan Wegener has said that the AF on the R5II is about equal with the R3...despite being 2 years newer and having a dedicated AI chip...PS the Northrups validated Mathieu's AF performance findings too, although in a less scientific manner and I am not saying that they can be trusted for everything that they say. Sony has better DR than either Nikon or Canon. Canon's colour science is the best (imho). But yes, they are all great camera systems imho. I do think Canon stands out for their menu UI and button layout UI vs the competition. Also, Canon eye tracking AF works a treat without having to do funky things like Nikon & Sony, which makes it nicer to use in the field for wildlife photography.
You explained why you call the R5 II "the worst camera I have ever used", but that description still seems hyperbolic. Battery issues aside-and it doesn't become a "toy camera" after 1.5 hours if you have more than one LP-E6P battery-your experience with the display going blank is not the experience that anyone else should expect. If it were, the internet would be on fire about this problem. The first thing I would do is exchange the body for a new one. Yours could be defective. Don't wait, send it to Canon, and risk getting into a situation where Canon can't replicate or fix the problem and you're left with no recourse.

It seems that when a company is on the ropes and its death seems imminent, that the engineers produce their best work. The reverse can also be true; the market leaders tend to be conservative, and rarely produce breakthrough engineering. Hope everything gets sorted out.
the Z8 is a cracking camera, congrats. It's all but the equal of the R5II other than being ~ USD $700 cheaper and readily available for purchase, including accessories. Oh, and Nikon is brining real firmware upgrades that improve the camera, not the crap that Sony & Canon spew out that are worthless. Depending upon what you shoot, and your wallet size, Nikon has stunning lenses too, especially if you are a wildlife photographer. Canon and Sony could learn a thing or 2.
@@davepastern Another advantage to the Nikon system is that they've opened the platform to 3rd party lens manufacturers, which really expands the selection. Canon has locked out 3rd party manufacturers, and Sony is playing games - yeah, your Tamron lens will work, but deliberately more slowly than native Sony lenses. And of course, all Nikon mount lenses built since 1959 will fit on any Z camera by means of an adapter. So the selection of glass is stunning. I have a lot of respect for Canon technology, but for me, right now, the Z8 made the most sense. The autofocus - with the new firmware 2.01 update, it blows me away. Before I can even compose the picture, it's found the eyes and focused the lens. Just wow.

10 min of useless talk about how you didn't have patient to wait for the battery to charge. after that you complain about issues with a 3rd party lenses. and worst of all, you went to an event with a brand new camera without even trying it first?! the fault is only on you and it reflects mostly on you.
He is using a Tamron on a newer Canon camera. Why- because he shoots events for free and can't afford the Canon lens.
just cos it's Canon doesn't mean it's "quality" mate. Look at that 75-300 (terrible QA) or the mark 1 24-105 EF with the aperture ribbon fuck ups. And they still didn't entirely fix that with the mark 2 version of the lens, and it's still an issue with the RF version of this lens, albeit much improved with lower failure rates.
1. known problem with the Black screen, which should be fixed now with a patch. Others have reported this (Duade Paton, Ordinary Filmmaker to name 2 that I am aware of).
2. with regards to the video recording time, were both set to 4k/1080p or was the R5 set to a higher resolution video recording format (say, 8k or 6k oversampled?)
3. the battery issue is a real pain in the ass yes. I do feel Canon did this deliberately to make more $$$, and not because of technical reasons. Also, no 3rd party battery will work with the camera, AFAIK. Canon is doing an Epson and unlawfully using IP to block 3rd party competitors in what is an anti-competitive move (and One might argue, monopolistic too, using their 50% market share to force consumers into their ecosystem and not 3rd party solutions). Why the US DOJ isn't investigating is beyond me (well, I know the answer, corrupt US senators and a pro business democratic AND republic movement). It's the same shills that are blocking the right to repair movement at every opportunity (led by, you guessed it, those C*NTS called Apple Computer systems). 'scuse this Aussies harsh language.
Sorry you're having so many issues. I upgraded from the R5 because I shoot wildlife and I wanted pre-capture, 30 fps, and better auto focus. Plus better frame rate to reduce RS. I got all four with the R% ll. I was able to get extra batteries so no issue there. 4k 120 works flawlessly. If I run out of battery and I use the old NH I lose pre capture and video. But by that time I'm too tired to care.
how are you finding the AF vs the original R5? I don't care for mega high FPS (not a spray and pray shooter, sorry) and pre-capture doesn't really grab me either. Pros have timed shots for years with much older cameras.
@@davepastern I find it faster and stickier. I do have it set to sticky tracking. I only shoot at 20 fps. I haven't used the precapture very much so I really can't say. However the autofocus is much improved. I shoot wildlife so I can't answer to the sports stuff. All and all I'm happy with the upgrade. Con-Battery life. Buy extras.

You got a glitched sample - it happens. But what you didn't understand about setting the quality and size - I don't know. Canon hasn't changed that for centuries. Backward incompatibility with batteries is sad, I don't argue with that. Canon is greedy. But LP-E6 always took a long time to charge, nothing new.
What's bad about this camera is that Canon is trying to balance between image quality, speed, and at the same time they continue the tradition of noise reduction in RAW in order to show inflated numbers for the dynamic range in tests, and they now have a hard time doing all this, they lose their balance. And their lenses are now doing roughly the same thing - using RAW resources to show a "nice picture". For example, there has never been such a distorted 35 1.4 in the world. Canon invented it. And its correction profile cuts off 10-15% of the image area to straighten the picture. Again canon is faking and cheating. This is a bad trend.
Canon has been lagging behind in image quality for a long time, but everything used to be honest and they didn’t try to hide or fake anything at the expense of raw image quality resources.
But now they seem to have forgotten that a camera is not an iPhone, it is a tool and we don’t need a “nice picture” from a camera, we need high-quality raw material, and a “nice picture” is the work of the photographer, not the camera.
At the end of my career, I can say one thing. Never buy the latest and greatest and untried by too few or the wrong "few". lol.. Good luck! It was all I could do to upgrade from the Canon 6D to the Canon R6 and this was only less than 2 years ago! Why fix it if it ain't broke?!
The black/green screen issue is funky and it's the first time I've seen this.
About long recording sessions: I can't speak for the R5II yet but with my other Canon cameras I've always used either USB C Power or a dummy battery. Both can be used with wall power or with larger batteries. This enables basically unlimited video recording and I've successfully done multi hour recording and streaming sessions without draining the camera battery.
I took delivery of the R5 ll a month ago and have used it almost every day since. I have not experienced any issues thus far. Certainly not a black screen.

@@davepastern Haven't heard Duade complain about black screen. He is shooting R52 daily and says it is an awesome wildlife camera.

so 4 minutes just talking about the battery and why the camera wasn't ready for use the moment you took it out of the box. Which btw it was, just throw a powerbank or an older battery and it works. Even a 25-50% battery is enough for start.
Since I am the contented owner of an R7 and R6II, I just tuned in to hear that rant as I work at my computer. :-) It is why I tend to be slow to accept the new, waiting a while on products and firmware updates. I'm good with letting others sort out the nonsense (e.g., Surprise! No batteries!). Photography is a hobby, and not a career, so I have that "luxury."
I wonder if you will see a difference in performance with an RF lens. The Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 (1) is kind of "long in the tooth." I had that lens on my R, and it performed well, especially for the price, but time marches on.

I was wondering too why he still using the older gen of Tamron when he's already using adapter. Like at this point if he does make some money, then he should get the new RF 28-70 f2.8 STM since it has weather sealing and the best bet for 1099.

Lol I am a Canon user and I don't think Nikon or Sony are any worse or better, they are all great once you're used to using them. Nikon offers better dynamic range than Canon, Canon offers better autofocus than Nikon. The more important thing is planning on which lenses you want in your kit and how much you are willing to spend.
@@wilburdesouza actually, the Z9 and Z8 outperform the R5 and R3 with regards to AF performance - check out Mathieu Gasquet's review on the R3 (which has the best Canon AF performance until the R1 was released). Even Jan Wegener has said that the AF on the R5II is about equal with the R3...despite being 2 years newer and having a dedicated AI chip...PS the Northrups validated Mathieu's AF performance findings too, although in a less scientific manner and I am not saying that they can be trusted for everything that they say.
Sony has better DR than either Nikon or Canon. Canon's colour science is the best (imho).
But yes, they are all great camera systems imho. I do think Canon stands out for their menu UI and button layout UI vs the competition. Also, Canon eye tracking AF works a treat without having to do funky things like Nikon & Sony, which makes it nicer to use in the field for wildlife photography.
You explained why you call the R5 II "the worst camera I have ever used", but that description still seems hyperbolic. Battery issues aside-and it doesn't become a "toy camera" after 1.5 hours if you have more than one LP-E6P battery-your experience with the display going blank is not the experience that anyone else should expect. If it were, the internet would be on fire about this problem.
The first thing I would do is exchange the body for a new one. Yours could be defective. Don't wait, send it to Canon, and risk getting into a situation where Canon can't replicate or fix the problem and you're left with no recourse.
