This room reminds me of that game I played as a kid where the carpet is hot lava so you have to tear up your living room furniture to supply yourself with enough life rafts to make it to the kitchen.

Honestly, it's kind of amazing that the lava that was originally in the chamber didn't solidify before we got here. You would think that, with both gates shut for several hours, the walls of the chamber would absorb energy from the lava until it solidified.

I remember playing that game at my grandma's...except that it was the mostly wooden floor that was lava and I had to use the few carpets to get around the house.

(in response to your description) Hey, my sister and I used to always play that lava game as kids too! Except we often pretended the entire floor downstairs was lava, so we got creative when we ran out of cushions and pillows to lay down. :P

But it's cool, I was reminded of the vent you crawl out of into Gehn's office in Riven too when you go through that vent into the 'sock' room.
