      Well, thats easy to say.
      Right now his design rating average for females sits at 4.5
      and his design rating for males is at 2.75
      Like you can argue it is just gonna be for Red Eagles, or that in general the female characters are better designed than the male charcters in 3H. That may be the case, tho I personaly don't feel that way. We shall see how these numbers turn out at the end of all ratings.

    • @hadoukenfighter
      @hadoukenfighter 3 года назад +4

      @@hamdepaf6686 for me its, I find Black Eagles by default has the least interesting male designs, as much as i love Lynhardt and Ferdinand, i can't say i'm in love with how they look pre timeskip, post timeskip Ferdinand is 10/10 tho.
      i'd say the best designed males are actually what you could consider the "church" faction, or more accurate "the characters who aren't students", with none of the playable adult males having a bad design and all of them are surprisingly attractive too.
      Blue Lions would be a distant second since Dimitri, Felix, and Dedue are all fantastic male designs, Sylvan, as much as i love him, isn't too special looking.
      Golden Deer is like, Claude's amazing, Lorenz is god tier design pre and post timeskip, but then you have Raphael and Ignatz who kinda blend into the background for me, i don't hate them but they aren't as visually interesting.

    i think people would really appreciate Bernie character if the developers would have taken her more seriously in general, her backstory is a good reason to her anxiety problems and she is really well portrayed in serius conversations. But whenever she is not in a *tragic backstory* or *expanding her deep anxiety problems and difficulties to talk with ppl* moment, her anxious trait is greatly exagerated, wich is the reason why lot of ppl dislile her and i dont blame them.
    on the other hand: Short hair cute girls are indeed my type than you.

    • @paysonschacherbauer4592
      @paysonschacherbauer4592 3 года назад +2

      To be fair, her exaggerated traits were probably a result of the developer trying to differentiated her from other characters with vague signs of anxiety (which is ubiquitous in this game).

    • @darkwatershadow

      As a bit of an anxious shut in myself, I really appreciated the way other people interacted with her. She started off as a one note character (which I'm into if the comedy or the gimmick of it amuses me) but I really appreciated how the other characters tried to bring her out of her shell and how some of them even apologized for trying to 'fix' her by pushing her out of her comfort zone. It reminded me of when my depression was at it's worst and how friends and family little by little helped get me out of my shell. And I liked that post time skip you can tell she's in a better space. So even though it feels like she's a joke character at first I think a lot more thought went into it than people might think.
      Her supports with Seteth are amazing too. I thought he was going to be mister wet blanket but the way the two of them bond over a story they both love and how he encourages her to do more illustrations is very heartwarming. You can tell he's actually pretty good at reading the kids and wants to help them with their problems and give them little pushes to help them be better people.

      From what I remember, Bernadetta's anxiety is only overplayed in her pre-timeskip supports. Post-timeskip (assuming you get all the ones you can beforehand, which obviously not everyone does but I think was how they were written to be) she mellows out and learns to be more confident.

    Honestly Ferdinand is like low-key one of the best units in the game, so lemme hitcha with my preferred build. Swordmaster Ferdinand with sword prowess 5, death blow, alert stance +, axebreaker, and either speed +2 or sword crit +10. Battalion: Aegir Astral Knights. Then slap an evasion ring on him and give him thunderbrand, mercurius, and Wo Dao+ and you have one of if not the best non-mounted dodge tank builds. Assassin works instead of sword master, but you get less strength with only a bit more dex. This build basically got me through 3 playthroughs in a row. He's basically unhittable. Thoughts? (Also Felix is best unit no question)

      Ferdinand also is one of three units who doesn't have any weakness in skills, making him super versatile (and he also has swift strikes). I personally think that there are 3 contenders for best unit in the game.
      1. Felix: brawling+strength+personal shield+reliable crest(+brawl avoid+20)=win game. His strength is high enough to mitigate weight from both his shield and the light gauntlets pretty early on. He has the 3rd highest male speed in the game, highest before dlc. His crest is super consistent, and when combined with gauntlets, can activate potentially 4 times. He ends up having super high damage output and avoid, and he can tank shots when he rarely gets hit. Sadly, his personal is useless, because you can give him one of several battalions that not only give over 5 physical atk, but also up to 20 more avoid.
      2. Dimitri: I know, everyone says this for his stats, with his strength and defense, but I don't care too much about that. Dimitri is unique, because he is the only unit in the game with access to both battalion vantage and battalion wrath. Give him a high endurance battalion, get it down to 1/3 endurance, and you win the game. You can use either retribution or the dlc chalice to have him counterattack mages and archers, and his charm from being house leader makes gambits almost never hit. However, if he does get hit, he has really good defense, and he can have Dedue's battalion to make him even more tanky. With this build, you don't have to worry about being below half health to get vantage wrath, and his strength is high enough to one shot pretty much anybody when critting, (which is always).
      3. Petra: Petra has the second highest speed in the game, highest pre dlc. She also has extremely good luck and dex, giving her stellar crit and magic avoid. Her charm is also very good (and tea time always can make it better). Next is her ability accessibility. Petra should be given dancer for the sword avoid+20, but never have the class equipped. She should go down pegasus/falcon knight path for highest speed possible, mastering wyvern lord as well for defiant crit. My personal favorite build I've done is with falcon knight petra with wo dao+, evasion ring, abilities activated (hp low from devil sword), Black Eagle Pegasus Co, final map in crimson flower:
      abilities: sword prowess 5, sword avoid+20, defiant avoid, defiant crit, alert stance+. Lv 43, Str 34 Dex 50, Lck 54, Spd 66, Cha 51, Hit 150, crit 152, avo 196.
      Sorry for the super long rant, I get really excited about this. Have a nice day!

      @@Mayhzon Im not talking about my personal experience at all. Those are just facts.
      If you are talking about normal or hard mode It doesn´t matter cus anything works there, literally anything, even mortal savant felix which is trash.
      Petra has a 35% strenght growth, so she will hit about the same as ingrid who already struggles dealing damage on madenning. On top of that, she won´t be able to double every enemy in said difficulty untill she gets darting blow (and even then she won´t be able to double falcon knights, Wyvern lords and of course swordmasters with quick reposte). She will double some people of course but It doesn´t matter when other units can delete groups of enemies in EP and other units like sylvain and leonie can guaranteed double any enemy regardless of speed with brave combat arts like swift strikes and point blank volley (and with higher strenght stats at that). Hell, she even comes with swords, so early on she will be outclassed by ingrid cause she at least comes with tempest lance, a very high damage combat art for early game. Also, her personal ability is trash, unless you combine It with battalion wrath, but even then It´s not necessary.
      Nobody is bad in this game, even shitty ashe can work, but some units are simply better than others, ignatz is mid tier while ashe is bottom tier simply because Ignatz has hit+20 while ashe has no personal skill, that´s how close the gaps are.
      PP Petra is about as bad as Ingrid who is considered a mid or even low tier, while vantage / dodgetank + Battalion wrath Petra is about as good as EP Hilda, which is a high tier unit.
      What truly is good about petra are two things: 1. Her speed, which means avoid; and 2. She has access to battalion wrath, which allows her to be a great EP unit.

    A big problem with Petra is that the most interesting thing about her is how she is from another country and is held basically captive but is okay with it either due to manipulation or a strict sense of honour/duty. But that is just never successfuly elaborated upon. There is no drama about whether she wants to leave Edelgard's side or not. She decides to go with or against her depending on what you choose. This works for most characters, but not for Petra. Ferdinand can go either way and both ways seem like two different branches of the same character. He can learn to channel his rivarly into a sense of duty, as the one person who not only can, but should put her down. Or he can learn to admit his defeat in his one sided rivalry and be subservient to her. Both work and are different. Petra.....never does anything. She doesn't hate her what her family/empire has done, nor does she ever succumb to Edelgard as her one and only Empress. She just either goes with cause she likes you or she doesn't because she doesn't like you.

    As someone with a 10+ yrs history of anxiety i don't relate to Bernadetta at all, i think she is instead insanely paranoid to an unreasonable degree. no one with anxiety would be vocally saying "oh my god you're going to kill me because i screwed up" part of anxiety is that it's internalised, you're constantly battling with unreasonable thoughts as you try to take back control of your mind so you can actually function. Having a panic attack is not kicking & screaming, it looks more like you've suddenly stopped responding as you take forever to process your emotions as if they're dial up internet, i've never heard of someone with anxiety choosing a fight response over flight or freeze, but maybe some of them exist out there.
    While Marianne is definitely more depressed than anxious, the two often go hand in hand and i think her self-doubts and trouble talking to people other than the most basic questions is much more accurate to people suffering with anxiety. Again her choosing to run away or shut down in situations she's uncomfortable in over screaming at her conversational partner before running away as if someone is chasing her is much more relatable imo.
    For this reason i don't hate Bernadetta or find her insulting, but i do worry that she's often marked as being anxious when at least from my own perspective there's something more than that going on with her, and in a world where it's still very difficult for the average person to grasp what Anxiety is (and particularly how it differs from stuff everyone experiences like stage fright) seeing someone whose whole character is dominated by traits like Bernadetta's be considered a prime example of anxiety sufferers is a little worrying. We're still people, not over the top cartoon characters.
    that's just my take anyway, personally in a series filled with shy uwu girls & inexperienced soldiers that partly demonstrate traits of anxiety (Florina always wants to stay close to people she knows for instance, or how a lot of the villager background characters wonder if they're really contributing or just a liability) there are plenty of other characters i can relate to, but Bernadetta is not one of them.

    • @Mayhzon
      @Mayhzon 3 года назад +2

      Agreed. Bernadetta's Gimmick stopped being "cute" really early on, too. Almost all her supports are her trying to overcome some type of fear, but it's so overdramatic it stops being believable and that ruins the fun.

      The thing you're missing with Bernadetta is how heavily its alluded to that her father beats her. She outright says in one support that he ties her to a chair to teach her to be "a good wife" and in another when talking about why she likes plants "they dont yell at you... They dont (something i forget)... They dont hit you"
      She is a victim of child abuse, her anxiety going to that level and that direction is actually justified and well written, her anxiety is born from experience of a violent father who likely beats her if she drops the spatula rather than place it down on the countertop. Is it over the top and irrational? Yes. Is it something we see in real life? We would a lot more often if abuse victims werent then manipulated or guilted into shutting up.

    Personally, Ferdinand was very good for me since with Confidence he also gets 15 hit and combined with swift strikes makes him a very accurate player phase nuke that can also take a hit or two since he isn't really that frail. Paladin for more damage with lancefaire and Wyvern for a bit more bulk and unrestricted mobility. He's as good as Sylvain but can't be recruited nearly as easily since he doesn't have the auto-recruit and you can't get his B support before the time-skip so if you want him outside of Church/Black Eagles you have to train Byleth in armor rank which no one really wants.
    Edit: Also on Caspar, War Master is just that strong of a class, statistically he is the worst one in the game with the weakest bases but once you’re a brawler with death blow you kinda just kill things anyway. The amount he is worst isn’t by that much overall. It’s mainly early game and after you get him over the hump he’ll be a bit less tanky than Duedue or Raphael but more accurate because of his personal. Just worst than Felix though because Felix is Felix.

    *Edelgard's characterization* is also underexplored compared to the other house leaders. It was most likely also cut short, alongside her route. Tbh, I found Hubert to be more prominent than her during her route than her. For example, *the fact that her lifespan is also shortened is never brought up, nor does she ever explain in more detail why she considers a war less harmful than the status quo and why she sees no alternative.* You have to piece that together yourself from all the routes and talking to all npcs. (It's because Rhea already started a war to create the kingdom to increase the church's power and is very proactive in eliminating any possible threat to the church's power like she did when she outlawed the printing press and advances in medicine. So any peaceful attempts at reform most likely would have Rhea starting the war or the nobility assassinating her or rebelling again.)
    What Edelgard's route should have done, and failed to do, is to convey her perspective that this is an act of desparation that she doesn't like doing it, but must do something because of how bad she knows the status quo is and she has sworn to change it (and is probably also driven by a bit of survivor's guilt & duty for those who were sacrficed for her.) I think part of the reason why she's so controversial is also that you really have to pay attention and fill in some blacks to understand her. A less in depth look makes her seem unnecessarily quick to go to violence.
    I think a *good moment to convey Edelgard's view more* would have been after Rhea's death. For example she could have just keeled over and get very sick after that, to force her to admit her lifespan is shortened which she kept secret ("Mustn't show weakness"). This would also have been a good opportunity to have her explain everything more, similar to Claude revealing his plans, as she asks Byleth to complete her work, if she runs out of time.

    • @WHYvernmaster
      @WHYvernmaster 3 года назад +4

      While it's true that the church halted advances in technology, there's little to no evidence to support the claim that Rhea started a war to create the kingdom. Rhea ultimately gave blessing to Loog to establish the kingdom after a certain point in the war, essentially determining that he'd earned it, but that wasn't to strengthen the church, it was to appease dissidents who were tired of living under the empire.
      I will admit to this, though: When I learned that Rhea had arrested the development of technology, though, my approval of her did decline somewhat. Not so much with medicine, because they live in a world with healing magic, which effectively makes even our own modern medicine obsolete, and it would have done more harm than good if they perceived it incorrectly, but burying telescopes, printing presses, and the like? Wasn't a, "okay, Edelgard was right" moment, but I went from believing that she simply ought to step down, to believing she absolutely needed to step down. To her credit, though, she realizes this, as well. She's just been waiting for the right person to pass the torch to.
      This is secondary to your point, though, and I'm sorry if I got off-topic. I don't know if the changes you suggested would change my views of Edelgard, though.

    • @toriwork8891
      @toriwork8891 3 года назад

      I don't think Edelgard's lack of characterization is about her shortened lifespan. Yes, it's quite telling that we don't even know if she has one. Some paired endings make her seem long-lived, and I think literally only Lysithea's even hints at a shortened one. It's more about the lack of "challenge." And I don't just mean "Ferdinand should've been like Felix and Lorenz!" - though that would help - nor do I mean Crimson Flower should've been all about Edelgard realizing she's "wrong" and war is "wrong" (my personal feelings aside). It's that Edelgard really faces no serious obstacles in her own route. Things like the Flame Emperor's actions, the Death Knight, and working with TWSITD is all just forgotten and hand-waved. Characters start acting like sock-puppets to gush over how amazing Edelgard is. Even outside of CF, the game constantly puts words in your mouth about how Edelgard must actually be super amazing since her soldiers are actually fighting for her (SS Seteth, the same guy who knows Edelgard worked with the group who kidnapped and tortured the daughter he's hyper protective of, sure, that's really in character for Seteth).
      Here you have a character who's whole shtick is that she's willing to do things so horrible she's remembered as a monster forever because she believes her actions will lead to a better future for all. And then . . . nothing happens. You go kill one person, then the next, conqueror that country, and everyone is just falalaing along with no real push back, no real challenges, no real discussions, no acknowledgement of the damages war causes. CF is such a wet blanket. It has more scenes that belong in a romantic comedy than it does a serious war drama. They did her dirty by absolutely never questioning a thing she does and having 0 consequences for her actions. You can't have a character who's supposed to be morally grey, who's supposed to be all about doing dirty things for a better future, if you just ignore everything she does, spend all her supports on "aren't you sad for her? aren't you crying yet?". CF is like if AM decided to tell a redemption story, but the worst thing Dimitri does is kill a few soldiers. Like, that would fall totally flat.

      "War is wrong" is a very childish opinion to have, though.
      The reality of our (and most fantasy worlds based on ours) is, that whether you are an individual, a group of people, a nation of people or any other organization, the moment you strife and rise above the rest OR make an attempt to do so while somebody else already sits on the proverbial throne, you WILL be attacked or you will be forced to make an attack in order to rise further.
      How that attack will look like and what it will entail will absolutely be dependend on the context in which you and your rivals / hostiles operate. But there is no scenario in which it doesn't eventually occure, unless you are at the bottom, always stay at the bottom and live your life in obedient servitude to the powers that may be.
      Companies have economic, information and cyber wars with each other all the time, often without a single drop of blood being spilled, but they ruin existences and are cruel in their own way.
      What type of wars nation engage in we don't have to talk about, it's widely known.
      Individuals that are more gifted than the rest are also often attacked verbally or challenged by others, too. Even in a very basic and supposedly harmonic setting. Take school for instance. I don't have to elaborate.
      The outcome you hope for to see in story telling to see would be a very weird outcome to try and force as a writer, if you have any wider understanding of anyting relating to our world.
      However...
      What I do agree with is that the whole story arc is not explored politically or economically enough, the plot does indeed focus way too much on the handful of characters without exploring the wider consequences.
      This I feel is a problem with all of Three Houses and Fire Emblem as a general probably in part because they continue to be child friendly and in line with the whole wholesome anime shtick. In fact, I think most games as a whole in the entire gaming industry get it wrong. They always focus on too much personal development or the world building and I find it disappointing, too.
      In Three Houses we for instance hardly ever see what or how the population reacts to what happens. We see what the few characters who have something to say tell us happens, but we rarely get to see it for ourselves. I guess this is what you mean when you say it feels more like a romantic comedy with it's scenes than an actual political drama.
      It lacks depth and I also wish it would have gotten more depth to the plot. But I was actually positively suprised in that regard, because I have seen games that are even so much more shallow than this.
      As for the supports, I guess they focus on the characters because if you bothered to go all the way of building it up to S, you care more about the character than the background story. But maybe that's me talking as a "new" Fire Emblem fan, I never played the old ones, only saw some of their gameplay on YT.

    • @toriwork8891
      @toriwork8891 3 года назад +1

      @@Mayhzon I agree strife is inevitable, but that doesn't mean the person who started the conflict isn't wrong 99% of the time. Take your mention of school. Bullying is wrong. If I dislike a story where the main character is a bully and that behavior is never addressed and say they're wrong to bully someone, that's true. It's also true that I don't expect bullying to magically go away.
      Buy, yes, my main gripe with Edelgard's character and her route is that it doesn't deliver what it needs to. Even taking morals out of it and just strictly looking at story construction, it's terrible. Edelgard takes actions we're supposed to think are hard for her, but there's never any consequences for anything she does. Why have her tell a bold-faced lie to all her closest friends if there's no narrative purpose? Why does no one seem to care she just tried to kill everyone during the Flame Emperor reveal? That all of this stuff gets totally ignored is weird. The fact Edelgard talks more about how much she loves Byleth instead of social reforms is weird. As it is, CF is written to be more about how cute Edelgard is and how much she loves you, the player, more than anyone and not really about clashing ideals (what ideals, Rhea's just a psycho dragon monster in CF, she doesn't get to have a point of view her narrative role isn't to show a clash of ideals but to make Edelgard look good in comparison), doing horrible things for a better future (what horrible things? In CF everyone is excited to invade other nations and kill their friends, no one seems to care what Edelgard does or says, they just nod along and get excited and tease her about Byleth), etc . . . You can't have a morally grey war story or a tale about how you need to get your hands dirty to better the future if the writing refuses to let their lead look morally grey or acknowledge anything bad that she does.
      That's really my issue. I'm not someone who really cares that much about how awful a character's actions are. I love characters who do way worse things than Edelgard and have no good intentions behind their actions. I love characters who do morally questionable things. Hell, I even love other protagonists who set out to conquer other nations. I like them because the writing around them is good and their actions actually matter and actually get addressed in a way that makes sense for the tone the story is trying to put forth.

    @Aleph3575 3 года назад +3

    Edelgard: Yep, pretty on point here, though I adore Edelgard's character. I'd actually redistribute one of those lost character stars to her power stat and give her a 4 star character. While yes, she IS the most overpowered character in the game with ridiculous stats allowing you to literally play her however the fuck you like, I think Edelgard just has a mandatory lost star here for her Availability. She's the only Lord who's unplayable for more than just the "Rescue Flayn" Chapter, and on top of that, you actually fight against her at least once whether you side with her or not. And there's a lot of flavor to that as well, which is why I say one of her power stars should be given to her character instead. Edelgard's overall character is also kinda blatantly ripped off of another character from a book series (turned anime) named Reinhardt von Lohenngramm. They both have the exact same story progression (childhood tragedy driving them to take revenge by overthrowing the society that enabled it, with both being prodigal and extremely talented people. Both have a "Unify Humanity" goal. Both represent an Empire faction. Both have something shortening their lifespan).The final Chapter of Crimson Flower's name is a direct reference to the final episode of Reinhardt's series (Legend of the Galactic Heroes).
    Edelgard's main downside is you pretty much NEED to play all 4 routes of the game, while ALSO keeping an open mind throughout in order to really appreciate and like her character. Which, is obviously a problem since most people are diehard loyal to the first house they play. If you play Blue Lions first, then obviously you're gonna view Edelgard as an abhorrent monster willing to discard her humanity DIO style in an attempt to win her war. If you play Golden Deer first, you're gonna view Edelgard as an uncompromising fanatic who threw away the opportunity for diplomacy and compromise. If you go Silver Snow first, then you're gonna wonder why did Edelgard betray everyone?
    In other words, you got alot to think about. On top of this, if you go into Crimson Flower first, then, while you may get Edelgard's torturous childhood and motivations, you still miss out on alot of the "proof" that she need to act the way she did. Only in Blue Lions do you find out just what certain houses are willing to do to their own children in the name of a glorified eugenics program. Only in Golden Deer can you find out how blatantly xenophobic Fodlan is towards outsiders. Only in Silver Snow can you see the lengths that Rhea is willing to go to preserve the status quo.
    I've always said that if you go in to Crimson Flower expecting Edelgard to somehow justify everything she did, then you were gonna be sorely disappointed. Instead you get to see how awkward someone who's been alone their whole life can be when they suddenly have people who believe in them.

    I singularly disagree regarding Hubert.
    Design and power? Yeah, I can accept a low rating. However, I cannot get over a low rating for this man when he’s the one character who acts like a theatrically evil son of a gun unapologetically. The sheer panache of Hubert won me over to the point of learning how to do his voice.

      Yeah, but he just doesn't make sense is the problem. If he acted like that because he enjoyed it, then I would have loved him, but it just doesn't add up. He is acting(or at least exaggerating), but his acting actively works against his goal of helping Edelgard. He is smart and pragmatic, yet his actions are irrational but somehow also not for his own enjoyment.
      I liked his gimmick, but the deeper you look at him, the more you realize he is basically a Fates character; he acts however the scene needs him to act with no underlying motives or personality.

    Dorothea's gold digger attitude kinda reminded me to Charlotte's from Fates, I mean, it's someone who knows how her looks affect others, and tries to use that to her advantage in order to get money to not remain on streets (it isn't about luxury, but rather, as a way to survive, which is something that usually offsets the gold digger negative connotation, as it shows it's not just someone who wants to get money out of greed or because obsession with luxury). In general, I thought I would hate her character, but ended up being one I really liked (that also happened to me with charlotte, they kinda have similar charm. And we can see three houses better writing made her lies a little bit better than Charlotte's, whose Jekyll and Mister Hyde-like attitude made her be kinda obvious about her lies). Fire Emblem really makes those characters be kinda charming (well, mostly, Makalov being the exception to that rule. God, how much I hate Makalov)

    To be honest, I've always found that Ferdinand scales super hard into the mid and late game. Due to his passive, I've been able to get him to dodge tank earlier than other characters so his midgame is really nice, then you can stack his passive with anything to just be really strong. I will say that his enemy phase is a bit weak though, if he does get hit, he is in a bad place since he loses a ton of power. I like to use him as a dancer or a wyvern lord. As a dancer he has little damage, but can get into the front lines and bait everything in. Nice charm growth too. As a Wyvern lord, he can spam swift strikes and can dodge tank even better. The big problem he does have is that there is no easy access to Falcon Knight.

How can this be the case, lindhart gets warp and since he’s used him multiple times there is no way he hasn’t reached it in a single one of his play throughs. So how could he not have stood out warp is a god like spell he also gets physic so he shouldn’t be near enough to the front sides that he gets killed consistently. And his ability to take magical hits well in black eagles which not many other black eagles characters can do reliably. He IS one of the best healers in the game with good utility and bulk on the magical side. So how can he get only 2 stars this is an atrocity a crime against humanity even. Actually, 3 or 4 good characters (Does Caspar qualify?) and 3-4 personality quirks. You could accuse Edelgard and Hubert as well, but Hubert has more personality that Petra while looking at her from purely what's shown in game. Of course, 50 percent of Hubert's supports are him being a bad motivator/loyal to Edelgard and her empire, but the others show he at least has a personality. Edelgard... well she's a difficult topic. She literally goes mad with power in all routes but Crimson Flower due to the lack of Byleth, her anchor, being at her side, so she's hard to assess. She could be accused of the whole "change the world" archetype, but of course, that gets out of the park in her B,B+, and B++ supports with Byleth ( Those are what I call those moments where they're alone together and Edelgard paints a picture of them together or whatever the B+ "support" is) and most of her A supports, along with her conversations with Claude(post-timeskip), Hubert, and more or less Bernadetta. Dorothea is ah, part quirk part character. Dating quirk, mediocre plot line, decent character growth. i'm not even gonna defend Caspar. He might be accused of the fighter quirk, but that's it with Raphael too, along with eating. He has some supports with Ashe and Ferdinand that are interesting, but otherwise he's bland, but I wouldn't say he's just a personality quirk. But you could define him by 90 percent of his supports. Go on ahead.

    Personally, I think those are the *strongest class choices for the Black eagles:*
    *Edelgard:* Dark Knight, Bow Knight (despite Bow weakness), Hunter's volley sniper, Falcon Knight, War Cleric (or without DLC: gauntlet using Assassin)
    *Hubert:* Dark Knight
    *Dorothea:* Dark Knight, Valkyrie, Dark Flier
    *Ferdinand:* Bow Knight, War Master, Wyvern Lord (with axe or with sword and +20 sword avoid from dancer for a dodge tank)
    *Bernadetta:* Bow Knight
    *Caspar:* War Master
    *Petra:* Falcon Knight, Bow Knight, War Cleric
    *Linhardt:* Dark Knight
    As for most needed skills, obviously every physical damage unit needs death blow and every mage fiendish blow. And then Edelgard and Dorothea desperately need Darting blow. And Hubert needs Hit+20 or a battalion that gives extra hit.
    As for all the low damage units, don't forget that you can get +7-8 extra damage from a top tier B or A rank (or house leader C rank) battalion. There is no such thing as a damage starved unit in this game, if you know what you're doing.

    My own ratings:
    Edelgard: C. As a unit, she's great, I just hate how she doesn't get the development she needs because of how under-cooked Crimson Flower is. The fact that all the other routes unrepentantly treat her as the villain doesn't help. Verdant Wind could have pulled a twist by having Claude and Edelgard compromise (I mean, their goals aren't totally incompatible), but we got what we got.
    Hubert: C. I do like how he shamelessly embraces the Evil Teammate trope, and he does seem to genuinely care. It's really too bad that Gremory is gender-locked because none of his classes help out his Dark magic uses.
    Ferdinand: B. I like how he starts as the pretentious noble boy and gets brought down to earth post time-skip and similar to Lorenz wants to exemplify the good aspects of the noble class (helping the weak) rather than abusing his privilege. I made him a Wyvern Lord and he was virtually untouchable.
    Linhardt: C. It's nice getting a healer that isn't "Precious cinnamon bun must heal all the peoples!" and he is completely shameless in his attitude, but his tunnel-vision kinda limits the direction his supports could go because he's perfectly fine where he is. I also like that he almost figures out most of the plot's mysteries by himself. Warp and Physic are awesome, but again, why isn't Gremory unisex??
    Caspar: E. Generic Shonen Protagonist. One of the few times I've seen this trope done right is Reyn from Xenoblade because they add more nuance to his character. His stats and strengths kinda make him a one-trick pony unless you want to put in extra work.
    Bernadetta: D. Yes, I know that people with anxiety can relate to her, but would it have killed the writers to take it more seriously? They took Marianne's depression seriously by having most characters treat her gently and gently coaxing her to grow, but most of Bernie's supports are basically her screaming and being irrational. She was a monstrous Bow Knight in Crimson Flower and Silver Snow, though.
    Dorothea: A. Like you said, I like that she shamelessly embraces the gold-digger life because she knows her looks and voice won't carry her forever, and _good lord_ get this woman a therapist post-time skip! It's like she raided Marianne's room and stole most of her depression while the professor was gone! Like you said, she was extremely good for me simply because she was a dancer in both routes.
    Petra: C. I did find her to be one-dimensional. Take it from a writer, there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving your character noticeable flaws. Flaws are interesting and create conflict and can drive the plot forward in interesting ways if you put in the effort. They could have made Petra cold and aloof at first because she's a foreigner there against her will, and then have her open up and be more passionate and caring after the timeskip. Oh well, one can dream.... She was a Wyvern Lord in both my routes and was completely untouchable the entire time.

    *Ferdinand and Edelgard have to be taken off their default class paths if you want them to be good units.*
    *Edelgard* really can't handle any speed penalty with her 40% growth, but with heavy axes and armored classes that's exactly what she gets. I think her strongest classes are: *Dark Knight, Falcon Knight, Bow Knight* (despite Bow weakness), *War Cleric* (or without DLC: gauntlet using Assassin)
    Skill-wise she also really needs darting blow. If you get to double she's really good. If you don't she's not, imo. In maddening her default class even makes her weaker because she then gets doubled which does more than the armor reduces damage.
    *Ferdinand* has a speed advantage and a pretty good personal skill. But if you put him on a horse or in armor he loses that advantage and those also don't take advantage of his personal very well. I found him best as: *Bow Knight, War Master, Wyvern Lord*
    Another thing that's very valuable to do with both of them is have them certify for Armored Knight at level 10 to boost their defense. They both have a very easy time getting that class, so there's no reason not to take it, regardless of what you actually want to do with them eventually.

    Not everyone should be a 5/5 as a dancer. Dorothea is unique as a dancer.
    her personal skill to heal gives her another advantage as a dancer.
    Her meteor makes her a stronger support while as a dancer. Not to mention, she has great supports with most of the best characters, which means she's IDEAL to make a dancer just for the gambit boost.
    Her Charm makes sword dance actually pretty decent, but moreso she's also dodgey. You up her sword rank, put on dodge + with it and swords dance, for that turn the enemy will find it very hard to hit her.
    There's no character besides Dorothea that can say all that.
    Ferdinand can be dodgy, but he can't use gambit supports nearly that well.
    Hilda sucks with bolting, as well as her personal skill and list of supports for gambit boosts aren't amazing.
    Annette can't be a rally bot AND dance at the same time. In fact, if you want rally bot Annette, I hate that people suggest she go dancer, have her just be a wyvern knight and rally bot.

I am not sure what your criteria for power rating is, in my opinion in normal and hard you can basically do anything you want and every unit turns out to be great/good enough to easily run through the game. If it is maddening blind (or with little planning beforehand) I mostly agree with the power ratings, but when you plan builds for units on maddening (NG-) then I think Ferdinandt, Linhardt and Dorothea should be rated much higher. I know that would put everyone at a high rating but lets be honest, in this sandbox game with a little planning and proper tutoring you can make every single unit a beast in combat or an ridiculously good support unit (like Linhardt and Dorothea).

    More seriously, you're not exactly wrong about Hubert; he's essentially a magic nuke. He can do some fun things, like making him a Sniper with a Magic Bow, but no matter what, he'll usually nuke something on player phase and not much else.
    Ferdie can be a lot of fun to use; the most effective and obvious use is to go Wyvern Lord and get him to A Lances ASAP. He gets Swift Strikes, so he'll always be able to double on Player Phase. Or, you could make him a Swordmaster. With his Crest, he has a chance to prevent the enemy from countering if he uses a Combat Art. This Crest has a chance to activate with every hit of Astra. I forget the math, but I think the enemy has less than a 10% chance to counter if he uses Astra.
    Lindhart has Warp. Personality wise, I think some folks have pointed out that he's autistic; he's got a lot of symptoms, but I'm just guessing a bit. I don't know that much about autism.
    Caspar is actually pretty really bad; his bases are very low, making it tough to give him enough kills to qualify for the stronger classes he needs. If I remember correctly, he usually gets carried by the base stats of Grappler and/or War Master once he promotes. His personal is nice, though. Make him a Dark Bishop, of all things, to stack it with Heartseeker for gits and shiggles!
    I've heard about an interesting study that found most folks who are a minority prefer funny representations over those that highlight their problems. So, Bernadetta being comedic more than tragic probably draws people with similar anxieties to her.
    Two things that make Dorothea a standout Dancer compared to the rest of the cast are her supports and access to Meteor. If she's running around as a Dancer with Meteor equipped, then she's providing support bonuses to pretty much all of your units, and she supports with nearly everyone, so it's quite a boon.
    As for Petra, I do enjoy the Mary Sue aspects hiding behind a language barrier. It's a neat variation on the hated character archetype, and her Mary Sue traits don't stand out as much since she's not a main character.
