Sylvester Stallone's Tulsa King TV Review

  • Paramount loves Taylor Sheridan. With Yellowstone consistently ranking as one of the most watched shows on television, Sheridan's creative output has expanded with sequels, prequels, and spin-offs of the Montana-set drama along with separate projects like Mayor of Kingstown starring Jeremy Renner. Sheridan's latest project is Tulsa King, a unique twist on gangster stories led by Sylvester Stallone in his first small-screen leading role. With a heavy dose of inspiration from the classics of the mafia genre like Goodfellas and The Godfather, Tulsa King is a violent and entertaining story that is far funnier than I was expecting it to be. With a stellar performance from Stallone, Tulsa King is Sheridan's best project to date and a welcome change of tone from what he has created before it.

Ok I was excited for this show. As a native New Yorker that relocated to Tulsa 2 years ago, I was really interested to see how they portrayed Tulsa. First and foremost, I like the show so far. With that being said the show is absolutely playing into Stereotypes, I can count on one hand how many times I have seen anyone in this city wearing a cowboy hat yet, in the show almost all of the Tulsans are wearing cowboy hats. It's nothing like that here. LOL, I am looking forward to seeing more and seeing where it goes.

well, i'm from Oklahoma and have been around the streets a lot in the past. I'm only giving this 50/50 after the first episode. Acting is decent, shots are not my style and could use a little more John Ford. The realism for the streets of Oklahoma so far is not represented. Granted i'm an OKC guy but from what i saw here nothing very realistic for how things work around here.

First off it's a fictional depiction of life in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Do they maybe use imagery to promote the fish out of water trope of course but it's not done in a mocking or disrespectful way.
And for all those genuine Oklahoman's stop with the no one wears Cowboy Hats in Tulsa. Yes they do same as Austin. Dallas and Houston is it prevalent as back in the day no but they still do it.
The show is about a Man suffering a massive culture shock rejected by his Mafia Family, abandoned by his real family and now dislocated from New York he finds himself in Tulsa, Oklahoma no one no matter how parochial could ever say Tulsa is the centre of anything.
I think my biggest complaint is the episodes are to short and the directors penchant for single camera shots leads to endless cutaways and gives the show a choppy feel.
Sylvester Stallone is great and very believable as an angry, annoyed and increasinglg alienated character ready to take on the world. My other complaint is pacing and plot not enough is happening and shots of Stallone looking at modern scenes playing out looking perturbed stopped being funny in episode one.

I liked the show but the supporting characters are not that great. While they deliver a monologue about how they are totally on board with Stallone's character and that they want to stand up for themselves and their values, the only thing in my mind is: why?
Pretty much none of them need money and they're not portrait as driven by greed. None have been personally slighted by the opposite faction and Stallone's character has pretty much done nothing for them, in fact he's been either actively or passively responsible for bad shit happening in their lives.
Their motivatons are lacking and their loyalty seems super strange. None of them ever talk about the ethical implications of what they're doing.
It seems like they're doing this just for fun, while actively putting themselves in danger of going to prison, being killed or destroying their families.

Its the life. That's why they joined Dwight. Everyone secretly wants to be a gangster and when the chance came across them they took it. These supporting characters had more development than they should of had and I respect the show even more for it. We know what everyone's motives are by the end of the season. Best believe they were having fun, it may have been life or death, but like Jane Wayne said "They know what happens when they play with other peoples toys."

Sick of seeing these worn out celebrities who don't know when to call it quits. Look at Bruce Willis, he's got about twenty B rated movies out there that absolutely sucks.... And now he's so used up and sick he can't really enjoy his life and family now. I'm sick of seeing the same old actors who are still trying to be tough and save the world and all that garbage.

Oh cmon.. The show is a stalone's power fantasy full of plot armor and macho one liners. The shown is pure horse piss, to the brim...
