The Coat: A Story of Charity

- Did you know that this touching story of selflessness and love is true?
When Heber J. Grant was young, his parents were too poor to replace his old, thin jacket. Instead, his mother surprised him with a winter coat she had made by hand. Heber loved it.
One day, as he was playing in the snowy street, he noticed a small boy crouched in front of an exhaust grate, trying to get warm. Heber gave his new coat to the boy, who needed it more than he did.
This Christmas and always, take time to notice the people around you. What can you do to help them? Your service will warm your heart and theirs.
“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matt. 25:40).

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"
I will never get tired of saying that joining this church was the best thing I could have ever done!
We're happy you joined.
Yep we’re really happy joined
I'm a primary teacher, I once showed this video to a bunch of 6yr olds on my phone. While usually I can barely keep their attention for more than a few seconds, one boy in class suddenly started bawling during this video. I asked what was wrong and he said "I don't know! I don't know why I'm crying!" I had to explain to him that what he was feeling was the Spirit, the love of God.
❤❤
That's beautiful! I'm planning on showing this to my class of 4-6 year olds tomorrow. I hope they like it that much, too!
vanderley3
planning on showing to my YW class! hope they like it!
That is amazing
This one always gets me. I had an experience on my LDS Mission that was much like this. I will never forget it for as long as I live. We were just about to end the day and we biked right by this kid with shorts and a small coat on. It was late November in Idaho, and it was cold! We biked right by him, waving to make sure he knew that we recognized his presence.
About halfway down the street to get out of that trailer park, both my missionary companion and I got the feeling that we should go back and talk to this kid. We went back and talked with him about Christ, told him that there were prophets on the earth today and gave him a Book of Mormon.
We said a prayer with him, gave him a hug, and he went back into the shadows. The next week he was at church, his mom had been touched and dropped him off there. The young man changed and found confidence and true friends. He was baptized about six months later and I got to be there for that. One of the most special experiences of reaching out to "the one" I've ever had in my life. I'm sure that young President Heber J. Grant was touched by this scene and if he ever needed some comfort, re-imagining and pondering on that wonderful moment from that one Christmas would give him some of the comfort he needed. "Slightest actions often meet the sorest needs" -Hymn #230: "Scatter Sunshine" Verse 2)
This is what Jesus taught us... Awesome story
Sometimes the coat can be replaced with a kind word, or some quality time with someone. Charity doesn't always have to be something big, so long as we are willing to give what we have.
the kind
I love this, thank you for your comment.
Very good.
God is will.
Compassion in any true form can be like a warm coat or blanket. Amen to that. 💝☮️🎄
I picture the Mother as being Heavenly Father or Christ making my special gift, and then sharing it with others. When they wondered what came of my gift, and I tell them I have given it to another, we all embrace with tears of joy. :)
What a good insight!
Yes giving charity unto the least of your brothers and sisters is a wonderful gift for u and for them.
So cute! The picture of the boy who was given the coat at the end made me cry!
me 2!
Me too!
This video can make more of an impact on people than any other video...without even saying a word. That is power.
who can dislike such a beautiful video?
Im not gonna lie i started to cry it was so beautiful

Heay
i was laughing my head of 😂
I love this message. It made me remember that when I help someone, I should give them my best. Heber could have gone back home and given the homeless boy his old coat but instead he gave him his new coat. That is such a meaningful way to live life.
"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." -Matthew 25:40
I am not mormon, but I love these Christmas videos! Its good feeling and inspiring.
PS: I know this story of Saint Martin, a Catholic saint (who was knight on a horse) who gave the half of his big coat to a poor sick man, laying on the side of the road. And he brought him to a house and asked the owner to care for the man and St. Martin paid for it.
So this guy- Saint Martin- was almost a real-life version of the Good Samaritan from Jesus' story? Literally came across an unwell dude on the road(sure, sick, not robbed and beaten within an inch of his life, but whatever, I did say "almost") and paid for his care? Awesome. Go Saint Martin. Dude obviously paid attention in class when they went over the parables.
I love This Story but it made me cry Two Times.
They served not only each other, but the orphan as well. It’s a really kind and beautiful message about serving others who are not as fortunate as others.
When I watch this it touches my heart
Brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. If I could only be so selfless. What a blessing.
God is the greatest gift
I can never get through this video without crying. I hope to be like that.
Praise the Lord Jesus Christ 🙏 Mother Mary Pray For Us 🙏Abba Father Bless us and we Adore You 🙏
It is so beautiful, and the little kid looks so cozy in the end, in his new red coat ...makes me cry every time

Simple yet deep lesson. Fantastic!
I've loved this story ever since I was young. The first time I watched it, it brought tears to my eyes. Now when I watch I know how much God loves us and protects us. We thank thee Heavenly Father for lending us you're strength.
I cry with solemn joy every time I watch this.
Thank you for this sweet simple portrayal of love and compassion. Isn't this exactly why our Savior wants us to be as little children?
no matter how many times i watch this, i always cry... perfect for true holiday spirit
I can't believe this had no words, was so simple... and still made me cry. It was that amazing.
This is one of the best Mormon Messages I've seen. It reminds me of the one with the boys putting the dollar coins in the farmers' shoes.
i love the way how these stories can change peoples lives.
This is powerful... this made me cry... please lets all be kind to each other...
Such a simple illustration of compassion that words did not even need to portray. Easily understood by even the youngest
Some of the most powerful videos put out by the church say nary a word. Powerful.
It is amazing how he cared for the other kid, by giving him a coat that his mom made for him, that I know is an act of service and I know that he did the right thing
I remember hearing this one in sunday school as a child, I believe it's a story that helped save me or in other words it helped save my heart. It's quite intense as far as humaness goes.
This video is very emotional and very expressive
When he gave that coat to that Boy He was Showing Emonial Empathy.
I am an LDS when i was 7 yrs old my primary teacher said that we will be speaker on Sunday and this video "The Coat" I shared this to the other people and when i was next is was so nervous and then I spoke I felt sad because i have a clothes and some of the peoplehad nonethat I have money, house, food and drink and other people had none and when it was Monday I bought on a store a hot chocolate and I saw a beggar and I gave him the hot chocolate and I felt happy because if you halped others...you will be blessed

Some of the smallest actions really show how much love we have in our heart, thank you for that story😊
As a child, I watched this and cried and told my mom: " If I were the kid with the coat, I would do the same thing "
And now, years later, I still smile and my heart warms up while watching this. Thank you!! For this video!
This is something my little 9 year old niece would do! It's so touching! If only everyone can think like this little boy!
This story always makes me cry, I love it so much! 🥺🥲🥰
This will always make me cry, every time, no fail.
I love this story
The best cartoon ever.
From a Persian Muslim.
God bless you all
I watched this video with my 4 year old granddaughter. She was spell bound and silent. As the video finished she came to me hugged me and snuggled up in my lap. Our home was filled with love and sweet peace. A very precious moment.
You can never be too young to start being a great man
this shows no matter of how old you are you can always give to people in need
What a unique way to tell a story. I loved the animation... I have never seen anything like it. The music was a nice touch.
I would love to see more like this. My little boys love this one.
So simple and yet so profound. What a wonderful way to teach the Gospel
this made me tear up such a great message
No words needed to convey this powerful message. I wish there were more messages like this!
My son's favorite. Please, please more like thus soon
This gave me tears😢😢
Who dislikes things like this? I wonder. Even though this was a little cartoon, I learned A LOT.
Now! that's how to bring a grown man - a hard cynic to tears. Well done!! Simple but oh, so effective.
Al
to the artist: thanks for using your creative talents to share the Savior's message with the world
That boy is very responsible. And caring

My childhood favourite
So beautiful story of charity, thanks for make it💝
My sister and I used to watch this video *all* the time. There was an app that had this video and a few others (if I remember correctly) on it. The Coat was always our favorite. I believe the other videos were The Shoe-keeper and **the one when the woman has the bread and gives it to someone else.
Those were the good ole days.
**I found the other video. it’s called A Mother's Hope: Overcoming Fear Through Faith & Hope In God
I love how he gives his new coat to the poor boy who needed heat to survive
such a lovely charity story. everybody start charity now.
"Moments That Matter Most" Mormon Message
So sweet❤🥺
I love how the mother hugged him back and didn't yell at him🥺😊
Great message, I love the quote as well.💜
This is such gorgeous music, too.
I love this video because it makes me think that no matter how much you have sharing is the right thing to do! It kinda makes me think of how much you want some thing and you may feel Good When you have it but giving it away to someone that needs it more is the right way to Go and no matter how happy you felt when you had it you will feel Ten times as much more happy when you give it away to someone That needs it!
Yes, it sends the message home.
