- In this video, I explore the treatment of male characters and their equivalent female counterparts, and the way things one audience happens not to like are often confused with objective mistakes.
I also strongly imply that pandering to feminism is literally the only way to make games better, so make sure to say I do that in your takedowns in the comments!

But there's just something about that Arthur Morgan
The cool thing about Bayonetta is that Kamiya didn't make any excuses for her design. He flat out said ''I was aiming to make her sexy''.
Compare that to Kojima and ''but she HAS to be naked or she will DIE...nevermind that part in the game where she is wearing clothes''
Kojima is literally insane and announced Dearth Stranding with naked Norman Reedus and his Norman Fetus, so maybe his problem is that he's never been sexually attracted to a man so much he had to sexualize him before now :'D If there's no naked/thong optional clothing set I'm gonna be pissed though.
"naked Norman Reedus and his Norman Fetus"

Yep, so much this. I hate the fact that Kojima tried to explain it. At least own it, dammit! Just come out and say: hey my game is super-dumb, kay? So here is some dumb shit!
Yeah if this is what he thinks sure. But to projecting something that does not exist is just lazy. The world in MGS is higly sexualized. You have a character like Vamp, Big Boss running around in speedos, Snake getting grabbed by the balls, naked Raiden etc. Quiets design and clothing fits perfectly in the world he has created. . He even wanted the Boss to run around topless but than had to give up that thinking because of regulations in Japan and video games.
Darji8114 Quiet being nearly naked is framed very differently from Big Boss,Vamp etc.

UltArcRanger not just sexualized, but treated as nothing more than sex objects and eye candy. Would you like that?
@UltArcRanger We who? The players of final fantasy whatever felt aggravated indeed over the sexy outfit for that male character. Imagine random crotch and bulge close-ups like they like to do with the cleavages. These nerdy bois would froth at the mouth. Maybe not you, sure, if you say so. But don't pretend it doesn't happen, because it already did, and will again.
@UltArcRanger "as someone who is an artist and likes to draw pinups" why? Because you can't get some in real life. As a gay man I hate how all the games I play show all this female eye candy. Heck, id hate it if it showed male eye candy too. Tbh it's a video game, not porn. And it's not a porn game either. If you want sexy people, watch porn or play a porn game. Video games are for a different kind of entertainment. God it seems like so many Straight males are too obsessed with sex that it has to be in every part of life.
There’s people that don’t care about objectification on either side and then there’s people who don’t like objection at all. And then there’s hypocrites

It's only fair-and totally hot!
I agree with this statement!!!
@Nashat Ansari two guys agreeing with each other on what women find hot lmao it never fucking ends
@Patient Devil Depends on the amount of abs. Generally leaner is more attractive than a lot of body-muscle.
As for sexualizing.
It can be argued that giving them fewer clothes makes it sexualization.
But let's look at it this ways, if you shave a monkey clean and dress them in only a loincloth is it sexualizing because the monkey is pretty much naked?
Or does sexualization only matter when people are sexuall attracted to something?
Theoretically I would say that cratos design could be considered sexualization, practically I'd have to find a female friend who is actually attracted to this type of body which (at least in my circles) is pretty hard to do.
Though, if men find this type of man sexually attractive then I guess you could call it sexualization.
@Patient Devil What does that have to do with wether something is considered sexualization or not???
The thing about the male character AND the female character both showing alot of skin has to be addressed too. The male character is muscular and shows off his muscles. Why is he muscular? Cuz he is a warrior.
The female characters are showing alot of skin too and they usually have big boobs and big butts. And big assets dont have anything to do with fighting. Im not saying that there should be no sexy female design. Im just saying that male characters showing alot of skin and female characters also showing a lot of skin are not the same, most of the time.
And the same dudes that like semi naked ladies fighting are the ones that complain that a 1,60 meter tall skinny asian beating the crap of some generic goons is unrealistic.
disagree to a certain extent.
male chars topless are also dumb, noone goes into battle topless. similarly i think cleavage in armor is dumb af
Very true. When dudes show skin it’s never a deep V neck and short shorts, posed so you can see their butt and chest at the same time
They also complain when woman who powerlifts obsessively actually has more muscle then them
That's so true, massive boobs and butt would be super impractical for fighting, but muscles actually make sense for that purpose. We need more Korra body types in female characters 😍 fuck men who say she's "too muscly", she could crush them and that's what counts

Relatable characters and good stories in video games is truly Orwells nightmare come to life.

While this is funny, the opposition to legit criticism is really a troubling sign that people tend to prefer mediocre products and don't like anything new, original or challenging.

Yhyhuyuyhw Yuuyuyuyh real life fascism is actually opposed to ideas of social justice.
I agree, the "male objectification" in most cases are actually a projection of the creator's ideal self, and players can have the same idea. While it's possible for some gay men/women to view a muscular, half-naked male character as being "sexually objectified," the intent is most of the time, a role play. When straight men play God of War, they imagined themselves as Kratos, not as someone controlling him.
@Patient Devil That's in Smash though, which is not the game around which the design was made.
Also it's a pretty weak point to "disprove" in the first place. The point is that both designs were made so that heterosexual men find them attractive (for different reasons, obviously). Whether or not someone can roleplay as whatever doesn't change the origin of those design decisions.
I actively reject the notion by choosing to play as female characters in RPGs. It doesn't hamper my ability to relate to my on-screen avatar and it also reinforces the notion that I'm simply manipulating a mass of pixels on a screen of flashing lights. I'm there to be entertained, not pandered to.
Also, props to Bethesda for giving some representation to furries.
@@ekki1993 I mean to be fair males have the biggest market for FPS games .
@@testacals That's mostly a myth perpetuated by the assumption that every anon is a male. Women represent about 40% of the global videogame market.
And even if it were, say, only 10% of the market share specifically for FPS games (a wild exaggeration), it would still be good business sense to cater to the other entire half of the human race when designing games. And I'm not even counting non-heterosexual males.
There absolutely is male objectification, it just looks extremely different from what people think off. Because (as the video points out) the big old bearded hunks aren't really what women find attractive.
What you wanna look out for are the sleek and smooth characters, the ones who tend to wear those really tight suits. It's admittedly not a super common stereotype in western games, but they are quite common in JRPGs.

I've always been severely unimpressed by Bayonetta's "feminine sexuality" excuse because it still just comes off as catering solely to the male gaze. Feminine sexuality is always treated like it has to be a performance, making it about observers rather than the woman herself. Show me a lady who can run around looking like Kratos with tons of beautiful men (or women or both) clamoring to spend a night with her or something. The idea that stripteases, high heels, and a ridiculous hourglass figure = innate female sexuality is incredibly tired and unimaginative. Even if she was supposedly designed by a woman, the entire execution was incredibly patriarchal.
masix Exactly! and boring. I'm bi and even I find her extremely boring and cliche. ooh. another weird ass and vagina bulge shot. yawn.
I agree. I don't understand all these women claiming she's a positive role model, I'm a woman myself and I've always found her insulting and vapid, and that's not even getting into all the sexist statements the creator of Bayonetta have said which makes it clear he always intended her to be a sex symbol for men, not for women.
Im very late to the party but I agree, I hate this whole idea that female sexuality is some mystical thing that is magical and powerful. Women aren't otherworldly creatures, we're humans, we get horny, we have needs.
"I've always been severely unimpressed by Bayonetta's "feminine sexuality" excuse because it still just comes off as catering solely to the male gaze. "
Well, you also have a Steven Universe avatar so there's that... :P
To be completely honest, I'm one of them "straight white males", and while don't have a particularly strong opinion about Bayonetta in particular, not a big fan, don't mind her either, but it might be that you simply have a personal issue with "feminine sexuality", hence my remark about your avatar.... everyone is free to follow their preferences, but you can't expect or demand anyone else to.
"Show me a lady who can run around looking like Kratos with tons of beautiful men (or women or both) clamoring to spend a night with her or something. "
I can actually agree with this argument to some great extend, however I can also see many reasons apart from "zhe patriarchy" standing in the way.
Can you imagine the inhuman shrieks from activists like Sarkeesian who would condemn any dev for this "sexist misrepresentation of women" and accusing them of indulging in the "miss male character" trope.
And I would expect most other feminists to also bash any such potential game, labelling it offensive to women shit like that.

Metal Quintessence You're speaking from your opinion. IN the last decade or so, female sexuality (outside of it being us the focal point/performers) has been growing behind the scenes (women like pretty boy reverse harems too lol), it is in no way mainstream but I think some ignore it like it doesn't exist/ rather stick to the same tired old formula. I and many women are raised to see sex and sexuality as the subservient ones and this isn't often realized until you're an adult for many of us. Anyway, who knows how things will change

I mean, Bayonetta is cool and all, but she sorta sends an overused and somewhat harmful message. You know... the one where women can only be powerful through their sexuality and can't be strong in other ways? The femme fatale is such a common stereotype in modern media: the sexy skin-tight jumpsuit-wearing badass that seduces men just to have her way thing is supposed to be empowering but honestly seems to be the ONLY powerful lady in action flics today. Even when a girl character is physically strong, she can never take a hit, opting more for dodging and weaving past attacks rather than getting socked in the face and shrugging it off like so many strong male characters do. Like, where's the tank who crushes everyone with her fists and a scowl? Where's the old lady who secretly knows the art of Kung Fu and beats up a whole room of Yakuza? Where's the Rambo that goes in with her ol' pal Mr. Minigun? They don't even have to be one-note characters like the muscle-men of movies past! These characters have the potential to be so cool!
But of course, why would a GIRL be strong other than emotionally or sexually?
Somehow a turtle Honestly, I agree with this a 100%. I'm writing a story that has a lot of female characters, and I'm aiming to make them all powerful in different ways. There's the femme fatale archetype sure, but there's also a female general who controls lightining and is revered as the most intelligent magic user ever, there's a cunning politician who manipulates the entire Senate to do her bidding, and there's also a straight up woman warrior, who is superhumanly strong, much stronger than even the protagonist (who fights in a much more classically femenine way, preferring evading and quick footwork)
This is so fucking ignorant in terms of Bayonetta. Did you ever even play Bayonetta? In the game she is known to do powerful exaggerated attacks like headbutting an entire building thats thrown at her. She was literally in a clan of witches that fended off another clan of Lumen Sages. Bayonetta and her friend Jeanne literally save the world by themselves. Its not just this overlysexual game that many people see it as.
Well, there was that thicc as hecc Barbarian in Dragon Quest, but she definitely falls under the fanservice category
Somehow a turtle that’s not really only message of Bayonetta. While Bayonetta is strong through her sexuality, she is also strong physically and mentally. She has a tongue as sharp as a sword and has extreme combat prowess even when not using her powers. Really Bayonetta tries to dispel the stigma of strength through sexuality and emotions. Most of the antagonists look at Bayonetta with contempt not only because she is their enemy but because of the fact she derives her strength from sexuality. The games aren’t perfect in showing this however and I can see why you came to the conclusion that you did, but Bayonetta is good example of female representation.

I am a woman for whom sexuality is a very large part of my identity. A character like Bayonetta bears a very strong resemblance to what I would consider a "power fantasy", and to some degree, Bayonetta's design WAS a female power fantasy. But it's important to remember the pull that Kamiya has over his work. How his characters are depicted and how they act. Mari Shimazaki's design work likely did not permeate Bayonetta's alternate outfits and in-universe actions as much as Kamiya's directorial clout.
While it's not a sin to enjoy sexy ladies (and sexy dudes!) for whatever purpose it serves you -- power fantasy or just plain finding the characters attractive, and sexual, sensual female characters are a wonderful thing when done well, but one can and should differentiate what motives were furthered by making that character sexual. As consumers, we have the unique ability to enjoy content while questioning it's context.
Personally, I think my ideal would be an industry where these (even pointlessly) sexual fictional characters still exist, maybe even in greater numbers, but they exist because women and men alike are exploring their own sexuality and creating power fantasy the same way Shimazaki was when she was first designing Bayonetta. I think that'd be a healthier way to create and view these characters as a whole.
Why am I reminded of David Bowie's song, "All the young dudes?" I don't know. I can't stop smiling.
you are totaly correct, and also it may exists in all sides of gender performance. But the problem here is that this is the rule of depicting female strong characters you know? We should have more options to represent strong females than those who are coincidentally perfect for a good fapping time.

A (not) perfect example of such "utopia" (not exactly) is Japan. They have stories with the shounen genre that appeals to the male audience and shoujo to the female audience. Though I wouldn't call the Japanese society exactly feminist (because it would be too wrong). After that we get Seinen, Yuri, Yaoi, Josei, Hentai etc.
As a straight man, I would love to see more pretty sexy boys in video games, like Beautiful Boy Adventure XXV.
But for real, I would love to see other demographics being catered, it would mean different and new games, it'll mean that more people might play games and make them even more mainstream.
Diversity is important because there are things that only be created by a certain group, everyone can have unique perspective and embracing diversity would help bring more of those perspectives to life.
Only the demographic that buys games should to be catered to. Because adding elements enjoyable to an almost unexistant auditory may harm the core auditory experience. And it does. A lot. I don't ask female cloth manufacturers to make room for my genitalia in every female pants they make. Because this product is not meant for me EVEN if I try it on sometimes.

You're conflating "games made for straight white men" with "literally all video games", which is exactly the fucking point, and you're missing it completely. Just as mens' underwear is shaped differently to womens' underwear, games made for different demographics would contain differences, too. Moviebob pointed out that male video game characters cover a wide range of ages, body types, etc, while female videogame characters are all in the same age range with about the same body type. I think this further points to video game characters being made for male fulfillment/power fantasies and female objectification.
We've started to see female characters with different looks to them, so things are improving, but we still don't see truly sexualized male characters like that Final Fantasy character that had to be covered up because of the prudish attack on free speech by all those incel MRA haters of free speech.
I think the diverse female representations have always been there, to be fair. FFXI was marketed primarily towards a dad-aged demographic, published in 2002, and gave us great heroines like a violent grandma trapped in a child's body back in 2004! 2006 gave us an authoritative empress with a childish streak, and 2014 gave us both a virtuous, heroic character, but also a daughter figure. XI also went as far as chastising the player's potential power fantasy at the conclusion of the original story.
For all the deserved criticism about Japanese gender roles, and how they infiltrate pop culture, I think games targeted at adults are generally flexible and diverse in their depictions of people, without drawing in an expectation of a power fantasy or a lady to leer at.
Moviebob? Lol that guy is a joke.

I, an almost entirely straight male, would like games to feature fan service that other folks could enjoy. Instead of whinging about the fan service we DO get we should ask devs to pander to other people as well. Also super manly men who are definitely not compensating need to shut up when other folk are represented.
While people make very good points about forced-diversity being bad in the workplace, I'd honestly say it's the opposite for entertainment. Adding diversity just opens up more space for more varied and interesting characters. It's a shame that specific character traits are off-limits because they aren't the standard straight-white-burly-man. There's no flavour to the majority of these male-focussed games.
@@Capybarrrraaaa I agree pretty much entirely with this. If you aren't just adding or changing characters for progressive brownie points (which is a hard distinction to make I realise) there is no reason we can't have more variety in who we watch or play as. @@Capybarrrraaaa and plus, it isn't reallu forced. It will be forced if they attempt to do that while sacrificing a Canon lore about the story, or maybe a character, like the Last of Us 2, where Joel, who was the fan favourite, died in an unjustified way just for the sake of having female main character. As long as they just so happened to be gay, or black, or lesbian, and it doesn't hurt any of the gameplay and the story, then I won't mind
@@kaizu8326 Unjustified? Joel was not an innocent man even before he slaughtered an entire hospital of Fireflies. The problem is you're looking from Joel's perspective but not from Abby's. That man killed a lot of people important to her, it makes complete sense she'd kill him if she got the chance and she did. There's nothing forced about it, its literally a consequence of an action that Joel and you as the player did in the previous game.
What you mean is you didn't personally like it and likely they made that decision because they knew it would shock people such as yourself, not because they wanted a woman main character. Remember just because you don't like it doesn't mean it was bad writing, or that it was because of some hidden agenda. Now whatever you think of the rest of the game Abby killing Joel is not at all bad writing, its just shocking and even jarring to see a former main character killed.

Yep, its amazing how they preach about how the developers should be free to design a game the way they want but when the developers do something THEY don't like, then its completely different. lol When you were talking about that you should have also mentioned the Baldur's Gate incident. Its a perfect example. When the developers decided to put a transgendered character and a joke about GamerGate in their newest game, the GamerGates all went crazy. They flooded the developer's forum with hate and demanded that they change it. So much for letting the developers create games the way they want.
P Ferreira My point, as I stated above, is that they claim developers should be free to make games the way they want but then the moment a developer does something they don't like, Gaters demand that they change it. lol
P Ferreira What? How is DLC relevant to anything I said? The game wasn't DLC and no one was forced to buy it. I'm talking about Siege at Dragonspear. Sorry but there is no logical defense of the GamerGate position here. They were being hypocritical.
P Ferreira Again, none of what you said actually addresses the hypocrisy in GamerGate.
P Ferreira "Yes I have. You're saying GamerGate are a bunch of hypocrites, I'm saying there have some level of understanding as to what's right and wrong with games"
First off all, that still doesn't address the hypocrisy at all. Secondly, what is right and wrong in games depends on your perspective.
"Maybe being a feminist means being overly paranoid to stuff like this in games but quite frankly feminists like Anita Sarkeesian know little about games."
And you know this how? I could just as easily say most of the prominent GamerGaters I see aren't actually gamers. Thunderf00t? Since when did he become a gamer. lol Milo? You may want to Google to find out what he really thinks of gaming and gamers. Christina Sommers? She's an older person and I seriously doubt she has ever even played a game. Aurini? lol
At least Anita had actually played games when she was a kid. Btw, I'm a feminist and I'm pretty sure my gaming cred is pretty high. lol Not only that but I also know one of the best female gamers on the planet and.... Yep, she is a feminist.
"You also need to understand the poor representation you see of women in games can be levelled at men to. Is Krato a role model for men?"
No, it really can't because there are far more positive characters for men than for women. Women, for the most part, are treated as trophies, background dressing/eye candy, helpers and people who need to be rescued in games. And more often than not, they are dressed and posed in sexual ways, even when it makes NO SENSE at all, such as the ridiculous chainmail bikinis that are so prevalent in RPG games. And female characters rarely come in an bodyshape other than supermodel while male characters have a wide variety: normal, muscular, skinny, extremely overweight, etc... Male characters are not represented in a sexual way so its like saying white people suffer the same racial problems as black people. lol
P Ferreira "She's not a gamer and never was. That was something her and her boyfriend created to make her sound plausible."
Evidence that she never played games as a kid? Now you're making claims that we both know you can't support. lol
"Not likely considering you're arguing against the representation of women in video gaming when firstly that's almost a non-issue"
Someone has a mighty high opinion of his own view. lol So I am going to assume you have officially made yourself the person who gets to decide what does and does not qualify as a "real" issue for everyone else? lol Wow, the arrogance is astounding.
Now if you want to talk gamer cred, I am pretty sure I easily surpass most GamerGaters. And I am not just referring to the huge number of games I have played or the fact that I have played games competitively. I was also a GameSage for AeriaGames on what used to be a popular MMORPG called Last Chaos, which is similar to a GM position with less power. I was also the community event manager for the H1Z1 Forum and I am currently one of the players involved with representing the DragonSoul community in a PerBlue developer group for the game. So yeah, I have experience in most aspects of gaming.
Also, HailtotheQueen (aka ViXeN) is one of the best gamers in the world and she shares our view that women are represented poorly in many games. I'll definitely have to see if I can get her on here to set you straight. lol It will be hilarious seeing you try to tell her she's not a gamer.
"and secondly there are bigger issues to deal with in video gaming first."
This is called a relative privation fallacy. I'm assuming that you once again appointed yourself as the person who decides which problems are more important for everyone. lol
"Who? If she knows as much about gaming as you I can understand why people don't take you seriously in the comments section."
HailtotheQueen/ViXeN/Vixy. She has been a professional and competitive gamer for many years and dominates the leaderboards of every game she plays. You're going to get yourself in a really bad situation here and end up humiliating yourself. You can find her blog here:

"Ha, ha! What video games have you been playing? Not the ones I've played. Gamer by arse."
I have played over 200 games already in my 19 years on the planet. So if you name it, I have probably played it. Unless you are solely playing games like Life is Strange, then you have played a lot of these games as well. Ever played the Arkham series? Assassin's Creed series? Pretty much any RPG or fighting game ever made? lol All of those games poorly represent women.
"You need to play more games than just generic AAA titles."
I do.
"Oh so it's ok for males to be topless in video games. How little does a male need to wear before he's seen as sexual?"
A topless male isn't seen as sexual in our society. Its only viewed that way when its women, which is why its illegal for women to be topless in many places but not men.
""its like saying white people suffer the same racial problems as black people." They do so?"
Oh wow, now you're just completely delusional if you actually believe that. lol
"No, it really can't because there are far more positive characters for men than for women. " Don't be too sure. Provide examples if you believe this."
Sure, that is easy enough. I'll start with the games I am currently playing.
Arkham Knight - This is the last time I buy a game from this series. Literally all of the female characters in the game are a joke. Even Catwoman who could easily have been a great strong female character instead of just being there for eye candy and as a typical damsel in distress that needs to be rescued. Meanwhile, the male characters are generally well done.
DragonSoul - This game has a wide variety of male characters but all of the female characters are made to look "sexy" and all have the same supermodel body type. Even the female dwarf character has a head like a normal dwarf but the body of a stick person.
DOTA2 - Do I even need to say it? lol
Overwatch - Hbomberguy already covered this one in a video but I'll go through my issues with this game. The first issue is the same one I have with MANY games: Most of the female characters all share a lot of similarities: Same body types, attractive-looking, wide hips, long legs, narrow waists and big breasts which are of course inexplicably (as always) highlighted even though the character is wearing armor. And the other thing that I always find mind-boggling in combat-oriented games: high heels. Now why would you put someone in high heels when they are going to be in combat? Other than the accentuated armored breasts and chainmail bikinis that you see in some games, this is one of the dumbest things I see in video games. "What? You say we're about to battle an alien invasion? Hold on a second, let me grab my 8-inch stiletto heels and bikini armor that couldn't possibly protect me from any kind of attack!" It is completely nonsensical.
I mean, look at Widowmaker.
i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ut7At5Ws--/bpvzstmamhbepnqfpcmb.gif
She looks like she belongs in a strip-club, not in combat. By the way, who actually stands like that unless you actually ARE in a strip club?
If you are going to take your female characters seriously then you may want to start ditching the heels, metal bikinis, thigh-high boots, ridiculous poses, etc... Now granted OverWatch clearly isn't meant to be a realistic game but still... Come on. Now I am not saying its all bad. I do see some attempts to improve it somewhat with characters like Pharrah and to a lesser extent, Tracer. She is wearing the ridiculous skin-tight clothes but at least she is wearing normal boots. She looks like she is ready for a fight.
Is this a small step in the right direction compared to Blizzard's previous female characters? Sure. However, as a female gamer, I would definitely appreciate it if more consideration was taken when they design female characters rather than just make something that male gamers want to stare at for extended periods of time.
Now look at the male characters and you see a wide variety of body types, armor, poses and nothing unrealistically stupid like high heels. They look like they're ready for serious combat. The only one who may be somewhat sexualized is Hanzo. Now if the male characters were treated like the female characters, they would almost all look like him but they do not. And it is much worse in other games. Even though they all share the same body type, at least only a couple of the female characters are a bit overly sexualized in this game so I guess that is a positive thing? Hmmm. The idea of trying to sexualize video game characters to begin with is pretty silly. They're pixels, they are not real.
Anyway, while Blizzard does seem to be taking baby steps in the right direction compared to some other companies, there are still quite a few things they can improve: Throw out some of the nonsensical design choices (heels, armor that looks like it belongs in a fashion show rather than in combat, etc..) and give us a wider variety of body types for female characters rather than just the super-model look. If male characters can get more variety, then we should as well.

I, for one, must have missed the point of this video. Yes, some video games are created to fulfill fantasies. Duh? Yes, Bayonetta is very sexy, very cool, and created by a woman. So? Is he saying sex appeal in video games is bad? Is sexual appeal bad? I've had a few, so forgive me if I missed where this was going. If you did get it please let me know because I'm a bit lost.
***** I think the best idea is to know your audience and pander to them rather than a social justice ideology. That's just good business. If the games sell, make more like it. If they don't sell, change. Quite simple, really.
but, he essentially straw manned every single one of his arguments
+joseaca Would you mind explaining that? I don't really see it.
I think it's very much worth noting how Bayonetta stands out from the crowd on this topic, plenty of other games feature sexy female characters, but Bayonetta is the series I see time and time again that is as well-liked by many female gamers as male gamers. Bayo is sexy, but she's also charismatic, confident, powerful, witty and in charge of her own story, it turns out a lot of people are pretty receptive to sexy characters if they've got a winning personality to go with it.
The exception that proves the rule
didn't people still cry about her a lot?
Yeah that's the thimg, Bayo is awesone yet proves the point of intentional fanservice. Men argue always using bayonetta as an example of appealing both sides ignoring that the point os not who appeals or not but why and for who is appealing, and what's the need of making her sexy.
My major gripe is that female fantasy armor always gets spun as “unrealistic” and “impractical” even though y’know that’s kind of the point. Male fantasy armor can be impractically bulky with shoulder pads that could tear your skeleton in half. My problem is moreso that female armor is heavily sexualized for a presumed heterosexual male audience, while the male armor looks like spiky shiny overdesigned shit
Rey did a cool thing

So just switch the two and it’s all good? Manly men definitely THACO+10000 with those muscles so it will be fine.
broke: women get revealing armor, men get big bulky armor

Male armour is always less impractical than female armour in the instances you describe. Also I don't understand why you mentioned specifically shoulder pads. They don't tear your skeleton in half unless if they are gigantic

But, I think that sexy guys have to be there at some point, seeing how we will broaden the horizons
TheEventHorizonX still, the character in the biggest state of undress was a female, a coded slutty-one
it's just tiresome having the huge dichotomy between male and female designs: the women are all sexual and have clothing (or lack of) to accentuate that, whereas the men tend to wear baggy or loose clothing as to lose the male silhouette, or if they are shirtless/whatever, they tend to be really ugly like kratos
TheEventHorizonX kay, point taken.
As a gay person I feel really awkward when I'm playing video games that are filled with scantily clad women nothing against the games it's just I kinda wish that there were more games that catered to the audience I'm in or at least didn't overtly just kinda leave me out.
there is mk with fight that look like they work at Chip&Dales will most fighting games for that matter
And that’s the feeling women get plus the added bonus of seeing themselves portrayed as objects for male consumption. Really makes you feel valued.
As a gay person, I'm also annoyed by forced heterosexual plotlines and flirting in games that I feel don't require any kind of romance
@@gommy0415 ehhh, I don't mind the scantily clad women. If I were to play a video game, I would want it with shirtless hairy men.
Come to FFXIV, where everyone is scantily clad all the time, and there is vaguely erotic undertones to every conversation you have with every hot NPC, regardless of their gender or your gender.
I remember when Halo 4 dared to dive into Chief's humanity and explore what a broken man he really was, as well as hint at ONI's shady practices, and people got angry because Chief was talking too much and they just wanted to shoot Aliens
If you're curious to see what happens to a game series' character design when the developers realize it's popular with women, compare Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (the first game) to Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (the fourth game). Just as one example, in the first game, you will not encounter a female character without a massive cleavage window (counting Maya due to how they chose to portray her channeling her sister) until the third case of the game. In Apollo Justice, the only character with cleavage in the entire game is (bisexual rock star/surprisingly nice prosecutor rival) Klavier Gavin.
I'm not saying it took them until the fourth game to acknowledge that they had female audience members- Mia's arc in the third game feels like a real attempt to center a female experience and root Godot's antagonism in his sexist behavior- just that it comes across especially clearly in the character design between the original trilogy and Apollo Justice.

I had a quick check but I am 90% sure of this but this reasoning is the exact reason we have had zero gay male leads in mainstream games.

It's quite interesting. Dad Kratos is and looks significantly older than Revenge Kratos. But even though youth is kinda regarded as attractive, his character alone makes him more attractive than young Kratos.
I think that sets a really nice precedent for middle-aged men; as long as you're caring and have some other positive character traits, people will find you hot, even with a bald head and wrinkles.
To be fair, men with shaved heads are already regarded as attractive because it's seen as more masculine and confident. As well, maturity tends to be a favourable trait. Ever head of the "silver fox"?
I find bald heads pretty ugly. If the guy was a cinnamon roll in every other aspect I'd forgive him the baldness, but it's a detriment for sure. At least for me.
As for grey hair... I don't know if I always liked grey hair or if I learned to like it because my boyfriend is grey. Though it's not really a major sign of maturity, even with salt and pepper hair he still got asked for ID when buying wine (in Germany you don't get carded if you look older than 18 and it's at the cashier's discretion).
Maturity only tends to be favourable when the character is mature. A bald, bearded manchild is unattractive, but bald, bearded responsible dad is a dream come true.
People didn't find Walter White cool because of his bald head and beard, but because he's the one who knocks. Benjamin Sisko wasn't cool because of his bald head and beard, but because he was the motherfucking Sisko. Incidentally, both were men who took charge and responsibility for stuff.
My theory is that, depending on the person, bald heads and beards can be detriment or asset, but not strong enough that they can overshadow character flaws or strengths. Same probably goes for grey hair.
Men go bald because of higher testosterone levels.
So clearly that's why women are attracted to bald men. Because all the non-baldies are Low-T soy boys. /s
Fatherly people are just more attractive. That's my hot evo psych take.

You know, this video is a real eye-opener. I never really thought about Bayonetta this way, but yeah, I never found her all that relatable. I never felt like I am her, instead I always felt that I am controlling her and that's it. And it really shows, cause she is framed so differently from most male characters in games, including the way her story is told.
I don't get this. She is a video game character. I don't feel like I am Axel when I play Streets of Rage, and I don't think I certainly don't relate to Dante from DMC. So what is your point? Bayonetta is just like thos characters. She is a character designed for gameplay and all of those games I mentioned, story is an after thought. Hence the reason her character isn't resonating with you in your day to day life.

Since I'm gay, a nerd and kind of a perv, I'm sorta mentally drawing parallels with yaoi and bara while watching this. On the surface, it's all gay hentai, but there are some pretty noticeable differences. Largely stemming from the fact that yaoi is aimed at women and bara at gay men. Perhaps unsurprisingly, yaoi is both more popular and sillier. Not that there's a problem with silliness or anything, I mean, I've got some pretty ridiculous furry stuff saved. Still, I imagine it's a lot like how lesbians feel watching lesbian porn, could be a fair number that are into it but I'm sure a lot are just gonna be thinking "no, that's not how lesbians work."
It's weird because when I think of bara I think of all the silly stuff, at least as far as character designs go. Like geez...And people say Kratos sets unrealistic expectations. :P
Yaoi is more popular because it's literally just a heterosexual relationship mapped onto "male" characters with the Seme and Uke roles (aka male and female). It's also more popular because it's not meant to actual portray actual homosexuality and the issues they face and has far less pornography than actual bara works.
I would however say that I know quite a few yaoi and even fewer bara manga, which use sex to tell and advance the story. I can ignore the errors in that case, because the focus isn't really how accurate he's sticking the Alice into the rabbit hole (this is the worst anal-analogy...analalananalogy), but rather in what way do they bond together. And I think that's something where Western gay comics are kinda lacking in that department, albeit there intention being pretty much the same as that of Bara.
In the end, I think it varies, but I personally like both genres quite a lot, and to me they are a great inspiration as an aspiring mangaka ^~^
So basically it's just fanfiction with a man in the woman's role but drawn versus actual media created by and for gay men to get sexual pleasure from? I can agree with you on that one.

I love Bayonetta. She's very much a power fantasy for me and part of it is having sexual power. At the same time, she was obviously created and shot through a straight male lense and is used to entertaining and sexy to other straight men.
She's a compelling character in ways I don't think the creator meant her to be.
That's the problem. The protag was never meant to be more than a blow up doll. We don't really have any real expliration of women's sexuality because its all from the pov of a dude who never saw women's sexuality as belomg to women.
That's why we need more female developers in a game industry. I'd really like to play as a sexy female warrior who is created by the other woman for a female power fantasy. Somebody like Madonna but with axe in her hands
@@brittanybecker170 May I ask how Bayonetta is presented through a straight male lens?
I see people making these claims with nothing to back it up.
@Melon Sauce You didn't answer my question. How was Bayonetta presented through a man's perception? And how does her design and behavior disregard female sexuality and experiences?
Well she was design by a women, Mari Shimazaki. Whether she was forced to design her within the male gaze is another thing. I just remember watching a Sphere Hunter video about how Beyo’s design made Mari feel empowered within a male dominated world, especially since a Beyo is nearly always in control with it.
i think the part about how kratos is hotter now that hes calmer and more dad brings up another big issue: posing matters, you could actually have a woman who runs around half naked and not have her be sexualised, just have her actually look like a berserking barbarian warrior thats about to eat your heart like Kratos rather then having her with a soft expression and posed like shes in a barbarian themed pin up catalog
As a female, I can confirm. No one likes beards. I like the lack of body hair, long legs, and long head-hair and... Oh shit, wait. Explains why I only seem to like women and anime boys. NVM, I'm an outlier, carry on.
(For real though, the assertion that no women like beards is exactly as silly as men claiming the opposite, that all women love beards and if they don't like your beard, you're just not doing it right. You nailed it mate.)
Also, 10/10 would buy Dog of War.
It's really interesting to me to look at covers of magazines for men Vs magazines for women and see how differently the same guy is pictured on the cover. In male-aimed magazines he's almost always looking toughy and strong, possibly shirtless, whereas on a female-aimed magazine he'll be holding a plant or something in a jumper
exactly how much time was spent working on the Dog of War joke, hbomb?
'Enough' would be the answer I'd go with xD
Not Enough. I want -no. I DEMAND at least a demo. Dogs of War needs to happen.
This whole video was just an elaborate shaggy dog of war story.
That elaborate joke did give me paws.
joke???
I don't care about video games. I'm here for the beard hate.
SOME GIRLS LIKE THEM! If they're done right. Brad Pitt's homeless beard was not done right
Grantastic oh, I know... they're very popular. That's kind of why I hate them. It was trendy in 2007 and then the trend NEVER STOPPED!
This trend really needs to stop. Men are way more attractive when their face is not hidden. It's really not a difficult consept for men to comprehend. But, in reality, they really don't give a damn. Their comfort is more important 'cause it's not like they are judged almost exclusively on their appearance... -_-
Brad Pitt's beard looked like a wet dead dog to me. Almost every dude looks better with stubble over beards.
I KNEW I WOULD FIND YOU HERE, SAYING EXACTLY THAT!
Just wait, you beard-haters will get your comeuppance. JUST. YOU. WAIT!
I come back to this video a lot after seeing a lot of comments about how some of the women in video games that are attempting to depict realistic people are ugly af.
Currently, i watch a lot of MK1 and people are hating the female designs. They want to pretend that a specific type of women only exist, its almost like they never actually been close to an irl woman.
that's exactly the point.. you can see everyday real life all the time, if you have complete creative control than why waste time adding flaws and attributes that make most individuals self-conscious. Spicy the way to go!
The part in God of War where Kratos (and the player) uses a tied-up Poseidon's Princess as a literal object to advance to their next objective, using her to prop open the crank, causing her to be crushed to death, where you can see her bloody remains, rewarding the player with a trophy that reads "I didn't do it... But I wish I did!" was truly one of the most disturbing things I've seen.
The entire game is misogynistic, but that part was truly vile and I can never get it out of my head.
It's kind of depressing this kind of misogyny is in a game that's so popular, exposing young people to this kind of mentality. I like to believe the game is popular despite that, and not because of it.
I do guess the new game is much better regarding this aspect
I mean... to be fair, you kill an awful lot of males in gruesome ways too. Not sure it's misogyny, unless there's some deeper meaning to the phrasing of the achievement.
Even though you completely missed the part where you're largely killing a lot of males and even the shitty quick time events where you brutalize a male, I don't get why you honed on that specific game event.
It's Misogyny if it's killing women, it's not if it's men
@@KindredBrujah I'm guessing the part that stuck with DK was how the player used the woman as a tool, not the fact that the death was gruesome. Poseidon's Princess quite literally functions as an object the player must use to advance (I'm assuming). Are there similar situations with male NPCs? Asking cause I haven't played the game. There's also the fact that she's skimpily dressed and tied up in a way that is "sexy", so it's like a "sexy death" which is a whole 'nother thing
@@Hellsing375@Cernos I feel like it's more about WHY there is an achievement for this particular character like that, making this achievement itself is mysogynistic. The mentality is clearly displayed here.
It's funny that you mention the "old joke" at 1:27 of men growing beards to attract women & only getting compliments from straight guys, because in my experience a not-insignificant number of those guys aren't straight
I said this somewhere else in the comments, but to repeat: beards make men way sexier, in my opinion, as a bisexual guy. Very few of my female friends have the same opinion.
I'd pay money to play Dog of War.
As a male who enjoys games, I admit to enjoying the occasional fanservice moment.
As a bisexual male who enjoys games, I'd also enjoy seeing that kind of fanservice with men too.

Feminisms core is equality, that can mean that we have more sexy boys instead of less sexy gals. As long as the number is about the same its all good.
There is no "equality" in business. Most men and boys play games, and thats where the money is.
No dev is going to get rich by catering to some political group.
@@besg5725 ah yes. The political group that... wants sexy male characters... yeah, you're right, there's absolutely no money in making sexy characters for women and gay men.
Melvin Ishtar are you kidding. That's what people said about Anime till they made sexy boys and the market litteraly discovered a new group of people(people attracted to guys)
@Ayanna Mett I'm wrong that... people attracted to men would appreciate characters meant to be sexually appealing to them in the same way straight men do, and therefore by not utilizing male fanservice you're missing out on a huge demographic's money?
@Male Ivy TBH, i don't remember my exact thought process for the comment, but I meant basically anyone attracted to fictional men. That's why in my second comment I said "people attracted to men" instead of specifying. I'm here for Equal Opportunity Manservice.
Gah. Bayonetta?! Why must everyone hate on Bay...oh...you started being reasonable. Okay.
Hold on, adjusting fire.
I realize my experience is far from universal. I honestly did strongly identify with Bayonetta, to the point it was the first time I remember putting myself into a woman's headspace.
A place I now reside permanently.
I find that this is actually not an uncommon experience for trans and/or lesbian women. Though likely by accident the way so much of her story is about not knowing herself makes her resonate more with people like me.
aww thats really cute :)
Nope, I'm a straight woman, still identified with Bayonetta greatly.
What girl DOESN'T want to be fabulous and look great as she kicks everyone's ass?
Agreed. Sorry if I implied that cishet women couldn't identify with her, but going from anecdata I still feel like other aspects of her story resonate especially well with trans and/or lesbian women. For instance, how she serves as her own role model.
(also, fun fact: the way Cereza's dressed is how a child would be dressed *regardless* of gender 400 years ago. I wonder...)
Robin? Robin who also thanks God for Jim? Hi!
I think that's because Bayonetta represents a perfect power fantasy for women: she's elegant, sexy, intelligent, battle-ready, competent, badass, sassy, fashionable etc. It's not like say, the girls from Dead or Alive, who are really mostly fap material and thus hard to identify with: a lot of thought was put into Bayo's personality and design, andto me she really represents an ideal that many girls wish to attain, as opposed to just another bombshell that was made to titillate.
As a gay man I wish we would objectify male characters more. Give me something to look at that doesn't look like Frankenstein's monster if he lifted.
"Titninja"... stupendous term.
That was a dumb-ass no brained assessment of taki and her look It doesn't make any sense whatsoever What the fuck are you talking about a tit ninja Yeah she's got a large chest so what Has nothing to do with her outfit and why she looks the way that she does in the lore which does make sense This is why people don't take arguments from people like you seriously when you say stupid Shit like that and have double standards that are easily debunkable And make you look stupid like you apparently are
ok be honest. Was this entire video a setup for that God/Dog pun at the end?
Be careful Hbomb, or you'll get blocked by Kamiya on twitter.
Thanks for explaining what Lindsay Ellis meant by Male Gaze on men! Now I realize it's more "male expectation of female gaze" rather than actual Female Gaze. Have a biscuit.

@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr care to elaborate?
@@ashikjaman1940 , men enjoy watching, playing, and reading characters like God of War 1 through 3 Kratos, Zoro from One Piece, etc etc because they’re masculine badasses that takes shit from nobody whereas characters that aren’t male fantasies that are for fan services only would be characters like Kallen from Code Geass, Hinata from Naruto, etc etc; a female power fantasy would be series like 1998 Mulan, Bayonetta from Bayonetta, etc etc; female fan service however the males from My Hero Academia, Magic Mike, etc etc.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr so exactly what points of hbomb are you refuting? Your point about Kratos doesn't disagree with what he said and in fact works pretty well in conjunction. Hbomb does also mention your Bayonetta point when he discusses the positives to her and her game's story. Not only is anime is a completely different medium and a different topic to what was discussed in this video, but I don't know enough about the stuff you listed to know whether what you say is true or not.
Here's a wild take: characters that aren't overly-sexualized are usually more attractive because part of what makes a character attractive is their personality and unique characteristics..
Huh, that's a really good point about Bayonetta and probably the main reason I found it way WAY easier to identify with and like her in the second game.
ie in the Second game the player already knows all the key players Bayonetta knows and is driven by their relationship to them: even newcomers probably like Jeanne because she's an equal and fights with you. Also they did away with those fucking QTE instant deaths.
Not seeing anime panties is truly George Orwell's vision of a dystopia
Interestingly about Bayonetta, the character designer is Mari Shimazaki. She designed Bayo to be sexy, but, in the confines of her universe, she's sexy for herself. Plus, she wears glasses, despite the publisher explicitly telling them to remove the glasses, as a small but direct defiance of the fantasy spoken of. While she does still appear as fanservice, she's one of the less objectified examples I think you could have brought up.
The more you know
I looove her glasses, they're really pretty, and they're refreshing as we don't see glasses on sexy characters a lot. Also, the glasses are just as sexualised as the rest of her outfit! They're just another thing about Bayonetta that makes her unique and stand out.
I don't really mind sexualization of characters, as long as the character owns it.

As much as I do agree with you on the points you do raise, I do feel that there is an over - reliance on one game (Bayonetta) rather than a look at the landscape as a whole. Games like Life is Strange and The Last of Us are starting to push the envelope and the attitude to gender is, to me at least, just a symptom of creative stagnation which is slowly being chipped away at. people are just strangely fascinated with the gender part for some reason.
I agree that the medium is improving and there are quite a few marked improvements now. I could have brought those two up in specific but liked the full-circle nature of GoW's latest iteration and its progress as a series.
Because it's fucking incredible, that's why.
Meg Life is strange is complete garbage, but I can understand why a certain type of people would like it.

+Mees Banning it's a rare example of completely not-objectified female character, who can even, depending on the player action, turn out to bea lesbian. It is also a rare video game story about not-hetero love.

a serious problem many male centered characters have is a lack of weakness or even failure, alot of creators think so little of their audience that they think that the players can't except that the character they are playing could be wrong or need help or be vulnerable. you know basic human things and it usually ends up with alot of characters actually just being mary sues
