@@Big_Dai that's literally the whole premise of the hero's journey, one of the most well known and established literary devices there is. the point of it isn't that you literally can't return to your home, or even that it's not truly "home" anymore. the point is that the experiences that you have on your journey have fundamentally changed you and how you view the world around you, and because of that, you can never truly go back to the way you lived before you left. you can go back home and maybe even be happy there again, but you'll never see things the same way or be able to go back to the person you were before. not everything is literal and sometimes things do actually have a deeper meaning my guy.

I generally assume the Boos are not ghosts. I just assumed they were creatures with seemingly supernatural powers/metabolisms that resemble what we would call a ghost.
With Luigi's Mansion, ghosts and boos are absolutely separate things now... which just begs more questions.

I think a lot of it has do with world-building and the visual language of the universe. Everything within the Mario and Sonic universe has a structure and rules they abide by. Even Eggman is a cartoony character. When Mario and Sonic are thrusted into our own world, it breaks the constructed world they live in. This is also why people don't like art shifts in their cartoons as well. People got angry at the Batman animated redeigns.

IDK if I'm taking this too seriously, but it bugs the christ out of me that the Mario RPGs, particularly the Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario, never come up in this; given that they address a bunch of darker shit within Mario's universe, including the existential ennui of Count Bleck, and yet they're loved by the fanbase far more than even Nintendo seems to notice.
Like, I could go into detail about my salt at how and why people keep ignoring the Mario RPGs as a "real" part of the Mario universe, despite the depth they actually bring that every New Games Journalist keeps fucking ignoring if you wanted me to...

I dig anyone who reminds people of the fact that the Mario RPG's exist, buuuut... you gotta see that the audience for those games is WAY smaller than the audience for the mainline Mario platformer games, who are exactly what hbomberguy describes- happy smiley fluff. Platformer Mario games sell way better, because they're much easier to access. The rpg's are cool and they do have a passionate fanbase, but they don't have the broad, all-inclusive appeal of the platformers.
Which may also coincidentially be why Nintendo themselves don't seem so chummy with those plots. They kinda just appeal ro Mario fans who are grown up enough to want an actual story from a game featuring beloved mascot characters, whereas the platformers appeal to fans of the characters and people who just wants to jump right into an adventure without anything getting in the way of playhouse fun. So since he's talking about the Mario platformers here, I'd say he's spot on in his analysis, the Mario rpgs are just a whole different beast, outliers who can't really be counted in this context, so to speak.

Its interesting that New Donk City was uncanny in the trailer but NOT in the game. Its very well executed. The real humans just feel like another species, along with all the other weird things that exist in Mario. Honestly, playing as a T-Rex is probably more uncanny and weird than the humans.
