Truly amazing the amount of people that don’t know his level of guitar play. The greats do though and that’s how you know he is among the greats. When you gets offers from the likes of Mark Knoffler, get praise from Chet Atkins, accept the offer with the Eagles, play in every (damn near if not) Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festivals, among others, you know you are truly elite class. Thinking about the crossroads festival thing, he headlines it, with other greats (whom you can tell Vince has a high level of respect for) play alongside him. He is one of the few that headlines when he plays there.

When a player of his calibre can play a clean clear tone where you hear virtually every note, you've got something special, and aside from having one of best voices in all of music, he proves again he is a master on his instrument!!!

Vince is a Norman, Oklahoma boy who was in the bluegrass band Mountain Smoke, at age 16, in the early 70’s. He may have turned down other opportunities to be one of the guys in the band, but instead became a star of his own out front. A long and great career, plus a guitar collection that makes his home place look like a guitar store. He’s done alright! His invitation and stint to stand in with the Eagles speaks to what the entire industry thinks of him.

Great solos in all the songs and he is so funny. There is a song with both Vince and Brad - "Working Man Blues" and also almost an entire instrumental of Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Chris Stapleton doing an epic jam together.

Chet Atkins term for someone special on guitar was "Certified Guitar player". He only gave that name to 4 people. Chet was self taught. He took the fingerpicking style of Merle travis and added what was in his own head and hands. Chet was such a lover of Merle's playing, he actually named his daughter Merle. Jerry Reed was indeed one of the guys who got the certified name from Chet.

Really loved this reaction! I always thought Vince never got enough recognition for his guitar skills, and seeing Keith geek out here was priceless. I've always loved the cool twangy sound of his lead guitar! As great of a guitar player he is, though, a lot of his big hits during his commercial peak in the 90s were sad, mournful ballads that really showcased his vocals. I somehow missed your reaction to "Go Rest High..." and I'll check it out soon. You also must hear his other signature ballad, "When I Call Your Name," plus others like "Pocket Full Of Gold," "Never Knew Lonely," "Look At Us," "No Future In The Past," "Trying To Get Over You," and "If You Ever Have Forever In Mind." My step dad was a Vince Gill fan too, and he also loved "When I Call Your Name," plus a couple of his more fun, lighthearted tunes like "Liza Jane" and "One More Last Chance," which are worth checking out too.
On top of all his talents, Vince is also one of the most genuinely nice guys in Nashville and country music, so I can't help but always root for him, besides having loved his music all my life. :)

And Keith says "He can sing... about as well as every bluegrass player I've ever heard" lol. This he says about a man that was awarded by the Country Music Association the Best Male Vocalist of the Year five times and the coveted Entertainer of the Year, the highest award in Country Music, twice. Not to mention the 22 Grammy awards and the 40 or so charting single and 26 million records sold. So its beyond safe to say he can sing. Not even the great Bill Monroe or any other Bluegrass player has his kind of success. He has also recorded some of the saddest songs in Country music, and that's saying a lot right. I think that his song 'Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name' with his haunting vocals just might be the saddest Country song ever recorded. As far as guitarists go there are and always have been more skilled ones in Country music than any other genre including Rock n Roll. Artists such as Glenn Cambell, Jerry Reed, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Roy Clark, Leroy Parnel, and even Dolly Parton just to name a few. Country Music IS guitars. You can take every instrument away but the guitar and your song, three chords and the truth, that's all. Oliver Anthony's recent success is proof of that.

Vince Gill absolutely made the right decision turning down joining Dire Straits. After that his solo career took off with the release of When I Call Your Name and he accomplished much more as a singer who is a good guitar player than he could just being a guitar player in a band. It's not like he's never gotten some pretty good guitar gigs either. Eric Clapton invited Vince to come play at his Crossroads guitar festivals and play with some of the best of the best and now his stint as part of The Eagles touring band. Plus he's won 20+ Grammy awards for his singing, songwriting and playing. If Vince had given up on his solo career, we might never have gotten some really good songs like When I Call Your Name, I Still Believe in You and Go Rest High on That Mountain. Plus all the songs he's done with Reba and Patty Loveless and countless others. Or all those appearances on The Grand Ole Opry. He has contributed much more to country music and music in general by sticking with his decision to give his solo career 'one more last chance'. Also, there are a couple performances out there on YT where Vince kind of does play some blues guitar. I have no clue if they were any good or not, but it's always good to see him try something different.

Maybe I'm just not in the Guitar world, but I feel like I don't hear Vince Gill's name brought very often when people talk about Great High Level Guitarists. I wonder if that is his preference. I mean he is definitely a Great, High Level Guitar Player. To get endorsements from the likes of Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins says something about his level of proficiency with the instrument. But I wonder if he was more focused on his song writing and the lyrical impact, that he wasn't as interested in including mind melting guitar solos that might distract from the rest of the song. It could also have to do with the timeframe and style of music he was apart of. His era of Country seems to focus more on the storylines and lyrics of a song than they are the instrumentation. I mean country will always have great guitar players like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Brad Paisley, etc. But it seems to me like mainstream country steered away from focusing on the guitar player and more towards the story teller. It seems obvious to me that Vince Gill really cared about the whole of his music, not just the guitar parts seeings how he turned down Mark Knopfler to play with Dire Straits. Could be he's the unicorn amongst guitarists, and doesn't have an ego bigger than texas about his guitar playing and was more interested in making songs for country radio.
I don't really know, I'm just make observations from what I know about Vince Gill, mainstream country music, Guitarists, and bits and pieces of information I pick up here and there.

He's definitely among the greats, based on this performance. The guy can play. Period. As for the theories on why he's not top of mind when you think of amazing players, your theories on that seem as plausible as any. - Keith

As an Okie, I've met Vince Gill a few times, my Great Aunt and his momma were friends. I was also in some music showcases back in school and Vince did a LOT of supporting music programs back in those days. Hell he still does. However, he's one of the sweetest, kindest and most humble people you'd ever meet. He was always gracious and kind and smiling. Always called said "yes ma'am" and "no ma'am" to my aunt, no matter how famous he became. Sent flowers to the funeral, too. He's honestly really, REALLY nice.

Vince’s live performances are full of stories and humor. He is Amazing!
Keith, did it register to you…his picking (if not watching live) you could think it’s a steel guitar?

    • @BourbonCountryReacts
      @BourbonCountryReacts  Год назад

I would have known it wasn't a steel guitar. But I may have been fooled into thinking it was a Les Paul instead of a Fender. Vince set up his tone on that performance to sound very Les Paul - esque. - Keith

It’s not Country but it was one of the coolest things to watch especially for guitar geeks.

@@BourbonCountryReactsMan, I know you really want to give us first time reactions, but occasionally with videos like that, I think you should think about yourself and the enjoyment it will bring you! I'd vote you go find it and enjoy it. There is SO much astounding country music that you couldn't possibly do a video for every song, so occasionally break the rules! Go on enjoy yourself! Nerd Out like a Southern watching NASCAR!

Guys, guys, -don't screw around like that! People don't click into a reaction video to watch you rambling on about other stuff. Get right to the item you're reacting to. And if you need to do a quick intro to that item, -fine!
