Vince Gill has always been adored by us guitarists for his superb skills, fluid changes, his musicality in general, fine lyrics, his kindness and generosity. He's right up there with Chet and Roy.
Don't forget Glen.
He learned from them. Think he jammed with all the greats in country and many in rock at some point.
He's also playing good country music instead of nationalist hick-pop.
Vince Gill showed me Country is cool. I was a Rock N' Roll snob. He shames most rock guitar players.
Great guitarists operating in all genres of music. Check out Tony Rice for some amazing acoustic bluegrass guitar
Steve Wariner can play it all, he just prefers Country
Vince Gill is truly amazing with his up-tempo country picking, but he is equally impressive with his slower tunes -- Look at Us, Go Rest High, and the unbelievable live duet with Carrie Underwood on How Great Thou Art, for examples. I wish I had the ability to be only one hundredth as expressive as Vince is in his playing! And you're right -- he shames most rock players, myself included!
He can shred
And think he learned from some of the best. Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Glenn Campbell, Willie Nelson, etc. He was originally a back-up singer and guitarist for Linda Rondstadt around the time the Eagles were the back-up and opening band at times, I believe.
His playing is flawless and his tone is pure bliss. Coupled with a silky smooth voice from heaven, it's a trifecta of perfection!
I think you are the kindest, very knowledgeable and very cheerful!
Thank you for having an appreciation for our country musicians, their extreme talent and creative ways of story telling.
Absolutely. Fil (IMHO) appreciates all kinds of music.
He's adorable. I would adopt him.
Fil's smile is infectious like a kid hearing something amazing for the first time. I smile like that in private as my teeth aren't nearly as good and I can even be brought to tears with some of these performances. Vince is the kind of player that can evoke either emotion. Great post.
Vince is one of the best ! He's up their with Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell,Jerry Reed, Brent Mason, Brad Paisley etc....
Vince is an excellent picker. I had the pleasure of listening to him speak to some journalists about his playing; 30 years ago. I remember him telling them, that you must always have the appropriate guitar for the gig. Every hall is different and so are guitars. He also said, never out play the band; when it your turn, step-up and let it go. Then step back and let band do what they do.
Cool!
Not only can he totally rock it but sing a heart warming ballad. Mom recently passed and she requested "Go Rest High On The Mountain" at her funeral.
Can't even think about that song of his without crying
Vince plays with a Western Swing band here in Nashville every Monday night. You'd think with someone of his caliber it would be "all Vince" but he leaves his ego at the door.
Cool!
THE TIME JUMPERS! AMAZING GROUP!
He reminds me of the way Buck Owens led his band. No ego, just respect. Vince is one of the greats.
It's so sad we lost Dawn Sears. She was lovely.
I've caught them, a great night and he appears to be humbled doing it.
Vince has it all, skill on the guitar and singing, a real sweet fine voice and a huge heart. He's a very loving person.
Sometime when Ronnie Wood can't make it to a concert, I'd love to see Gill fill in with the Stones ! That'd be awesome !!!
I think he fits better in his current gig with The Eagles, filling in for Randy Meisner on vocals.
Gill never disappoints! I love how Fil smiles when he’s really enjoying all of these guitarist being amazing!
Amen!
I think Vince is so good because he started out playing Bluegrass. It takes a real talent to play that style of music without relying on a bunch of pedals and knobs. Bluegrass musicians are among the most impressive players from any genre, in my opinion.
👍
I started out wanting to play rick but quickly found bluegrass to be what I love and it influences all my other music i play.
It's amazing how many great musicians started in bluegrass and on the banjo. Saw Ry Cooder last year with Ricky
Skaggs and Ry was a powerhouse on the banjo. Also well known (I think) is Jerry Garcia.
daniel morris , good point well made.
He was in a local bluegrass band around Oklahoma City called Mountain Smoke in his later high school and post high school years before heading out to California and eventually joining Pure Prairie League. They played a lot during that time, one of the bigger local acts.
THANK YOU PHIL FOR SHOWCASING ALL GENRES OF GREAT PLAYERS. 💜
What I LOVE about country players is their utter ease and relaxed way of playing.... no jumping around, no histrionics, no grandstanding, only great playing. I never thought I'd say it, but country players really have SOUL. They just express it in a different way.
i love hearing him with The Eagles now, insane voice
Flawless playing from Vince, he had the entire package, talent, good looks, and a sincere appreciation for the spirit of country music, and now he is an 'Eagle' what a blessed career this guy is having
👍
I was in The Bluebird Cafe the night of Johnny Cash's funeral...It was a writers circle with Amy Grant, Beth Chapman, JD Souther and Rodney Crowell. Vince walked in pretty totaled (He'd been drinking a bit after the funeral)...They invited him to sit in for a song...He busted loose an equally amazing solo on a big Martin D-45...off the cuff and drunk as ya like...I was a doubter before that night...but he really is among the best players in the world...He just never misses a lick.
Awesome.
As far as I am concerned, he is probably one of the most talented all-around performers ever born. He has it ALL.
Neat story, love hearing them. My oldest bro went to college in Nashville, & told lots of stories of who showed up to play at the various joints around town. Good 4 u sir. Memories are cool.
Miss Mellie has just right! Vince is an incredible guitar and mandoline player and then he starts singing! I love to see him bring out that old yellow Strat. It looks like he dragged it to the gig behind his pickup but he can sure get that thing to sing!! It's one of the survivors from his guitar collection and made it through the Nashville flood a few years ago. He lost many fine instruments to the flood that came through his and Amy's home. He's ALWAYS worth sitting down for a listen...
@@MrGaryGG48 And what a collection he has...Wow..!! He collects guitars like a lot of country boys collect firearms...never enough..!!
Vince Gill is absolutely one of the smoothest, fastest "Guitar Slingers" in existence. Seeing him live is completely transcendent. Most of these top players can play just about *_anything with strings_* , and play it well! That's the Bluegrass roots coming through. Another great video from this channel!
Cool! Thanks!
Vince Gill is a class act! Brilliant songwriter...dynamic musician...mesmerizing guitar play! Out of this world fabulous!!! Thanks for your positive viewpoint.🥰
Man he’s got it all! His voice is one that you could listen to all day! God what a guitarist it’s insane!! So melodic and intricate and yet he makes it look effortless!! Truly brilliant vid Fil !!!😮😮😮😮
Amen!
Love Vince Gill...from his early days with Pure Prairie League through his bluegrass/ country stuff to blues..uber talented picker/ singer/ song writer/ entertainer..huge fan
Cool!
That telecaster is on fire! What a talent!
Vince is apart of The Eagles now. He was a part of Pure Prairie League too, and an amazing musician!
Cool!
Really?
@@Alamo-cz5xc Yeah. Vince plays with the Eagles when he's not doing solo shows. And he was in PPL, he sang lead on a song called Let Me Love You Tonight
One of my fav Vince Gill songs is actually an Eagles cover. He does a great version of I Can't Tell You Why (and I think Tim Schmit was even on that recording).
@@fnjesusfreak That was an awesome remake from the Common Threads album...loved that album
Many people don’t even know how amazingly talented Vince Gill is. An outstanding guitarist. Even for those that dont like country, Vince knocks it outta the park every time. Wow.... 👍
Vince has it all.
👍
He's smooth as glass, both as a singer and a guitar player. His talents fit the Eagles.
👍
Vince is such an humble guy. Saw him live several times. He has probably done more duets than anyone I know of! He can do the duets because of his high tenor voice. His musicianship is also top notch! He has also written some beautiful songs. Go Rest High On That Mountain is one that he is more well known for.
Killer musician. Killer vocalist. Killer composer. Just awesome! Love this man.
I'm REALLY glad you mentioned how skilled a good country player's soloing is in comparison to Metal. Every metal guitarist i know that picks on country music I always laugh at them and tell them. ok, now play that same thing you always brag about being able to play on a clean tone and get back to me lol. Takes so much precision. There's no distortion to hide behind with flubbed notes. You have to be SPOT ON PERFECT.
Amen!
Flatt and Scruggs and Chet Atkins were doing sweep and economy picking decades before metal even existed... which was derived from classical and Spanish influences... Metal players were late to the party by almost 30 years
the country players can play what the metal players are doing, but the metal players can't play what the country players are playing
Thanks! I’m not much of a Country person but WOW, I didn’t know VG was so amazing.
I figured you'd get around to Gill. I saw him a few times around that era and always paid extra to get up front. This guy is the total package. He can play as well as anyone and sing as well as anyone. His persona is his real life, a chill kind of guy with a great demeanor.
Cool!
Ya...but can he clog? :)
Love the positive vibes you give off. Shows how much you love music. Nice to see from a young person!
Thanks!
TinyE Monroe agree
I had the absolute pleasure seeing Vince in concert back in the late 90s. OMG, he completely stunned me with his fabulous guitar playing. I knew he was a great singer but I had no idea, until that concert; that he could slay a guitar!! If you get the chance to see him in concert, do not pass it up!!!
Thanks for highlighting Vince. He's been my favorite singer/guitarist/songwriter/entertainer since he joined Pure Prarie League. Vince is in a category of his own. Few are this talented to so many areas. Through it all he remains humble and constantly gives back. Just an amazing talent.
👍☺
This isn't just mindless noodling, either. The solo has a beginning, a middle, and an end, which develops a motif beautifully.
👍
They haven't been playing at the Station Inn for several years. Now they play at 3rd and Lindsley Bar and Grill on Mondays
Tom Forsythe well said!! When I have long drives, music like this makes it a short drive.
Wow!! For 2&1/2 solid minutes a seamless, perfectly executed, solo with NO repeats. Just one awesome lick after another arranged in a way that sounds effortless in a super clean tone.
There's no one as great as Vince Gill. His songwriting, the guitar playing, and his beautiful voice..incredible. And I had several chances to speak to him, and guess what..he is one of the nicest guy ever!
Cool!
Thanks for your appreciation of country music and musicians. Always learn from you
And this demonstrates why Sir Clapton invites Vince to Crossroads.
👍
I heard that Ringo Starr turn down the sir if it's true I give hats off to him he didn't think it was right going to check anyway
@@thomasrose38 It isn't. He was knighted as Sir Richard Starkey (his legal name). Incidentally, the proper form of address is Sir (First Name), not Sir (Last Name).
We know Vice and his wife Amy in passing through kids activities and charity work here in Williamson county south of Nashville. They are incredibly genuine and approachable people. Vince is just as friendly as he acts in TV. He has rock credentials in his early career and certainly play metal if he wants. I suggest anyone want to see how Vince really is to watch his performances at George Jones memorial ..man if you can keep a dry eye through that one you’re a better man than I
Vince Gil is a good man in a pretty tough town business wise
Well done Fil.
Thanks!
Fantastic review of Mr Gill. Thank you Fil!
His best ever is "Nobody Answered When I Called your Name." Completely different. One of Roy Acuff's favorite songs. I"m sure you know these performers don't use sheet music.
Yes, and talk about a great vocal range...he sounds better than a lot of female sopranos..!!
Many in country music believe it to be the best country song ever written . Three minutes of it will suck the life out of you .
"When I Called Your Name" is one of my favourite songs from Vince (w/ Patty Loveless)!
His duet on "When I Call Your Name" with Patty Loveless - with those high, tight, harmonies - is perfection.
They don’t because the music is composed freestyle I believe. When you perform anything that is not classical, you won’t see much sheet music. It is custom music. A lot of players don’t even learn how to read music because they learned by playing by ear.
My south GA country roots/rockabilly are feeling this one deep down in my soul! Vince has always delivered the smooth vocals, but you're right , I never noticed how perfect his playing is, esp on his solos!
👍
I know we normally talk and comment about the music you watch but I want to say what drew me into this channel was you... your such a nice guy, willing to look at all types of music and you do it so well. I really respect you and your professionalism ....I like Metal but Im also a Pastor of a Church who listens to Christian music to. Anyway- I love music period and I can see you do to. hey how about checking out Stryper ??? One of my fave bands.. any way love this channel...Love what you do and how you do it... Ps Scott Kraniak ( God bless )
Plus watching how you get into the stuff you like...cool
Thanks Scott!
Agreed!
As Fil would say...."Spot-On!"
He said he was playing basketball with some friends one night and one of his friends was telling a story. said he went to a bar and saw the guy take his wedding ring off and started hitting on the ladies. With that story Vince wrote the song pocket full of gold. Also made his friend that told the story cowriter. Pretty cool.
Thanks for highlighting how insane these country players are
Vince is so musical, not sure which is better his playing, or his vocals. What an amazing vocal range, and virtuoso playing!
Amen!
I appreciate your appreciation.... Excellent synopsis my friend
That sure sounds familiar...
Oh, that's right... it's what I said in part about the Roy Clark analysis!
Thank you for the complement!
Thanks! 😂
Another great analysis. I really appreciate your wide range of subjects. Thank-You.
No problem!
Dito.
Fil, the smile that comes over your face as the music overcomes us, is priceless! Cheers, Phil
I've been following Vince Gill since the early days, and his vocals are unparalleled in the country music industry (and just about anywhere else) His duets with Patty Loveless were the stuff dreams are made of! His guitar playing skills are amazing and probably right up there with the likes of Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and Johnny Hiland. Really dig his music!!😁👍👍 *P.S.* The look on your face when Vince was playing that solo was priceless! I'm the same way, believe me.. can't help but grin like an idiot at the total awesomeness of his technique!🤣
😂👍
I am so glad you did a video with Vince Gill. I have loved him for years. Thank you!
No problem!
Hi FIL..I love that you reacted to Vince..he's the man..I've been following him since..uhhhh..well without revealing my age let's just say a very long time...lol
I also love that beautiful smile on your face when you're really enjoying what you're listening to and it makes me double happy 😊
Love Vince Gill and I’m not a big country lover. Fabulous voice and guitarist. Thanks ❤️⭐️
What people forget is that Vince learned his picking with Ricky Skaggs and his band. When he left the Pure Prairie League to go solo, he was the opening act for Ricky Scaggs concerts. One of my favorite concerts to have seen
He certainly has a very unique voice and that band is something else too.❣❣
Brilliant! Simply brilliant. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this great player Phil!
Thank You Again! We appreciate YOU!
It's easy to see why Mark Knopfler invited him to join Dire Straits back in 1989.
Yeah!
Jeremy Ebert Vince here in u k next summer with the Eagles in place of the late Glenn Frey
Never knew that!
I was at the Eagles concert in Detroit last October. Vince and Deacon Frey fit in seamlessly. One of the best sounding concerts I have ever been too.
Jeremy Ebert And why he was invited to join The Eagles.
As a metal guitarist myself I gotta say Vince Gill is an amazing guitar player..that's not easy to do by any means and takes years to master..very impressive
👍
HI FIL . YOU DO A VERY GOOD JOB. THANKYOU SO MUCH .YOU MAKE EVERYTHING SO INTERESTING. VINCE SINGS AND PLAYS SO GOOD. LOVE YOU GUYS . PEACE AND LOVE. THANKYOU FIL FOR ALL YOU DO.
This guys smile makes your day
Thoroughly enjoyable performance, there's a stage full of talent!
👍
I always loved that Clapton invited Vince to perform at every one of the Crossroads Festivals. Tells you the esteem that Vince is held in.
Robert Horn I was thinking about that while watching. I remember seeing him in the 2004 crossroads lineup and thinking “hmm”. Then I listened to his set and I had no idea he could burn like that! Really a skilled technical player. Perfect note placement
Exactly.
Yeah!
Heard Vince Gill/Patty Loveless @ George Jones funeral - Go Rest High on the Mountain? Country at it’s finest - Professionals making it work!
Another great artist and beautiful voice 💜
I see someone else brought up the fact that he was asked to play for Dire Straits. I've seen Vinny a few times. One concert he started out by announcing that he had just heard some hours before that his hero Chet Atkins had passed that day. He asked us to hang in there with him because he was still so struck by the news. The only time he wavered was at the end when he sang "Go Rest High On That Mountain. His wife Amy Grant came out & helped him get through it. That was a concert I will never forget & Vinny played incredibly that day as he mourned his hero, Chet. I am new to your channel & have loved your Stevie Ray Vaughan videos. My favorite guitar player for sure. Really enjoying your explanations!! 👍👌😊
all i can say is WOW!!!!
So effortless and perfect
Yep!
Thanks Fil, I appreciate your knowledge and appreciation of this.
I'm real glad I came across you Page. I really enjoy the appreciation you show for great Country Players.
Thanks!
Vince is a monster player a phenomenal singer and a super nice guy I'm told!!!
Nice unless he's having a bad day on the golf course. I'm a Nashvillian and my brother n law is in the music business and quite a guitarist. He was on the road for years. I've heard some stories.
I've told him to write a book. He says attorneys could not protect him from the lawsuits if he told all he's seen on road in 80s thru early 2000s.
Vince Gill has one of the most beautiful voices of any man I have ever heard.
Oh yeah, I love that fast chicken pickin' stuff like Albert Lee. Vince's lead solo starts to sound like a lap steel guitar. Very nice. I'm from the 80's rock/ metal head era. I began to admire and respect country guitarist as well as classical and jazz, as the years went by. I like the fact that you expand your analysis to all styles of music. Very smart way to grab many viewers attention. Thanks Fil. 🎸 👍
Albert Lee is a legend!!!
No problem!
I was thinking the same thing...sounded just like a lap steel!👍😎🎸🎶
Ladies and gentlemen, THAT'S how you do it! Fil, you need to come to Nashville and spend some time playing with some of these country guys. I would love to hear that.
And this is why he was Country's Entertainer Of The Year for many years. And now you have me watching their thumbs (I just watched the Glenn Campbell review). I always appreciate your analysis, I always learn from you yet we can still enjoy the piece. 🤙🌴😎
Vince Gill is phenomenal!!! Thank you for doing this!! He has a great 4 cd set that shows his talent! One disc is country, one bluegrass, one jazz and rock. It's called These Days!
No problem!
Vince is one of those rare combos of amazing vocalist and amazing guiratists. He just came off this tour with the Eagles. I heard him sing "Take it to the Limit" and he hit the high notes Randy Meisner used to hate to sing live perfectly. His solo had a lot of pedal steel licks in it where you push the 2nd up to the 3rd and passing 4th sus as you move between chord changes. He does them soo quickly and smoothly it really separates the men from the boys. My father-in-law used to have a little country band that I would sit in with when he was in the area. One of the many instruments he played was the fiddle. He was getting ready to play a Bob Wills tune and a woman came up and said, "Oh you play the violin also?" He said, "No, this is a fiddle. In country music we call them fiddles." "What's the difference?" she asked. "If you play the violin you carry it around in a case." he said. "If you play the fiddle you carry it aroud in a flour sack."
Haha yeah it's funny the whole violin/fiddle thing 😂
Marshall - so right. Vince Gill has been a go-to replacement singer for bands pretty much all his life, meaning his was sought after for that gorgeous tenor. He replaced the original singer of Pure Pairie League and got them back on the charts and has subbed for other bands in need. He's just THAT good. What I love about him the most is is amazing gift as a harmony singer and the way he can change his phrasing to match the lead singer the way say, John Starling can do. If you want to hear him truly shine, listen to him sing "Dark as a Dungeon" with The Chieftains on one of their early Country-Irish fusion CDs. You'd swear that this Merle Travis song was a traditional Irish melody. he also sang Bard of Armagh/Streets of Laredo (same tune) with the Chieftains on the CD soundtrack of the Long Journey Home. I almost wish Vince Gill would use that jeweled Irish tenor of his on an ENTIRE CD with the Chieftains. Of course, his guitar playing is whiz-bang brilliant. So many techniques!
@Marshall - The lady should have asked to see his "flour sack" for proof that it was a fiddle.
😨
There was no doubt once he started to play.
I saw Vince Gill in concert a long time ago. I had no idea who he was back then, just went with some friends. But after concert never forgot who he was, he was fabulous! His guitar playing was very impressive!
It was somewhere in that timeline I saw him live at wolf trap Vienna Virginia with Patty Loveless . 😊
Thanks for throwing Vince in the line up! Absolutely one of the best out there. Hes a Grand Ole Opry member too! I love country music! See Ya in Nashville!
Every musician should come spend a few weeks (or years) in Nashville...
No problem!
It's a Fiddle! No violins in country music. LOL
I was just going to say that. Its a fiddle 🎻 😃

Took the words right out of my mouth Frank
Haha yeah he can play the violin, but can't play the fiddle 😂
@@crisprtalk6963 , I think Fil is great guy, I'm just joking with him & busting his chops.I've made so many positive comments on previous videos I'm pretty sure he understands I'm only joking.I can't speak for anybody else comments I can only speak for myself and I was only busting his chops like I said✌😁✌
So many guitar virtuosos ( virtuosi ? ) are wildly intense, concentrating on their work. Vince Gill, according to all accounts, is a genuinely good guy. Easygoing, mildmannered, and of course, a wizard with a guitar.
Vince Gill is the man.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I've noticed that you really enjoy all music. No matter what genre, you are so dead on with technique , style, or whatever !!! One thing I've noticed, is that with American country you have a bigger smile on your face !!??
The technique is always impressive!
Mr C U yes he does smile a lot then.
Now we're talking guitar playing here. Two years ago Vince put out an album with pedal steel player Paul Franklin. A tribute to Bakersfield. Unbelievable renditions of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard songs. The guy just gets better with age. By the way, it's high time you do a review on Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives.
Paul Franklin is awesome!!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Marty Stewart is pretty incredible.
I’m addicted to Fil’s channel. So cool to respect John Denver to Van Halen to glen campbell. Outstanding.
unbelievable what he can do with his pick...amaizing...love it
Fil, so glad you added Vince Gill. He's been one of my favorites for decades. He's one of the best pickers ever, and if that's not perfect pitch, I don't know what is. No wonder the Eagles asked him to join the band after Glenn's untimely passing. I said it forever that he's money in the bank.
No problem!
Yay! You used my Vince Gill suggestion. Thanks! Vince is awesome!
Ive been suggesting him too. Vince Gill is one of the best out there.
Vince is a great player, no doubt. Such a good guy too...
i made the suggestion. you were 2nd.
I gave him the link to this video a couple months ago. Doesn't matter. I'm just glad he did Vince.
@@Caddowolf i made the 1st sugg. I didnt have a specific song. Asked hom to chose. You did the link. But I put forth Vince Gill.
JUST love your appreciation of all music. I am a hard core country old country and old rock was born into country , I got into rock in high school and love all kinds as I gotten older, But love the old school music, Just awesome.
Excellent review.....I just saw Vince here in St. Augustine, Florida on Veterans Day, 11 Nov 2018. He is the consummate entertainer.......monster guitarist......great vocalist, and a front man who is always in touch with the audience. I saw him a few years back when he was awarded Entertainer of the Year in Jacksonville. He just gets better. Wow Thank you for a really unbiased and astute review.......
No problem!
The thing i like most about what you do here Fil is that you don't pigeon hole yourself with just on genre of music. You cover a very broad spectrum of talent! keep it going my friend and thanks. I really enjoy your posts. Still waiting for you to do Gary Moore's The Messiah Will Come Again!
Absolutely BLAZIN'....
👍
Vince Gill is an amazing guitarist, loved by many people. Thanks for another great analysis video. Cheers Fil!
No problem!
In the beginning when he says he's going to do it like Chester taught him, he was referring to guitar legend Chet Atkins. He certainly learned from the best.
I've always been a fan of Vince Gill. I have a few of his cassette tapes lol. Yes I'm 55 and still going strong! Great guitar player and perfect fit for the Eagles tour. You're the best Fil! Great stuff. Love your channel! Cheers!
Cool! Thanks!
i never knew vince was such a beast on the fret board
And there we have it. His vocals are smooth as butter and his solos are grease lightning.
👍
I can listen to Vince Gill play this over and over and it just never gets old. He also played this a Crossroads 2010 and just blew the audience away
Check out the Vince Gill's solo on the Alice Cooper song A Runaway Train. He shreds the hell out of it. Alice's guitarists were like how do we do that?!
To see the reaction on your face as Vince Gill playing up and down the neck and hitting them high notes was pure priceless. You ought to look up Brent Mason and Vince Gill playing together a song called, "Don't Try This At Home". I Guarantee you'll love the both of them picking and they each have a solo.
Haha thanks!
You welcome Fil
I was just listening to the Brent Mason/Vince Gill video for my Vince fix tonight. Forgot that Paul Franklin was also playing with them. What a treat! Paul also plays with The Time Jumpers.
I know that all of us are so thankful that Vince didn't decide to just remain a golf pro; what an absolute treasure we would have been denied..!!
Vince has a mastery of his guitar!!! Awesome guitarist with a fabulous voice!
