Police dash cam footage shows wild semi truck chase in Ohio

- On Saturday, Ohio State Highway Patrol got a call at 1:30 p.m. for a reckless driver on I-75.
Officers attempted to pull over the semi truck but the driver refused. He then led officers on a chase into the city of Cincinnati, then onto I-71 and then onto I-275.
Soon dozens of officers were in pursuit of the truck.
Police say that the driver was holding his wife hostage in the truck.
The truck driver made several stops and talked with police but the driver refused to surrender. At one of the stops, the driver disconnected his truck from his trailer and took off again, reaching speeds of 80 mph.
Police say that the truck driver backed up and intentionally tried to hit officers.
“He crossed over numerous times into the eastbound lane of westbound 275 and vice versa, putting numerous people at risk of serious physical harm,” Cincinnati Police Assistant Chief Paul Neudigate said in a press conference.
Eventually, the driver let out his wife. She was immediately picked up by officers and taken to a hospital for treatment. She reportedly had a broken leg and it was apparent she had been physically assaulted.
Police threw out stop strips but that didn’t stop the truck. Eventually, a member of the SWAT team shot a 50-caliber rifle round into the truck’s engine, finally disabling the truck.
“He would’ve killed somebody. Let me make this clear: Had it not been shut down, had we not gotten involved, the way he was recklessly driving a 5,000 or 10,000-pound vehicle, somebody would’ve been dead today,” said Neudigate.
The truck driver then held himself at knifepoint. He was tased and taken into custody.
“It’s 2020. Things are occurring today that I haven’t seen anything like this in 30+ years of policing,” Neudigate said in a press conference.

A SERT Bearcat is more than capable of doing a pit on a Big Rig so there's no need to get a truck to go against another one. Bearcats can push twice their weight but departments never use them for chases or pit maneuvers except for the LAPD.
He was later bailed out by Swift and offered a job plus a $5000 'sign on' bonus.

Friend of mine told me how stressful it is to live in a semi. Shippers treat you like crap, dispatchers use you to make money, youre never home. The worst job ive ever heard of. These semi truck drivers have no lives.

@@bradleyhightower6849 I have a 2014 579. When I’ve been idling for a while down south it will have a notification pop up on the dash to initiate a 10 minute regen before driving. The 30 to 40 minute regens typically indicate that the truck isn’t doing passive regens on the highway and it needs to increase the temperature enough to get a proper burn in the filters. This can also happen in cold temperatures.

Surprisingly he had his trailer at the start of this, and his wife was held in the truck too. He stopped in the middle of the highway at one point and detached the trailer and took off again. This video covers that part. This whole thing went on for several hours. It was nuts.

@@chloecook4511 If it's done right of course it will. There's existing tech that stops trucks for range of reasons. I come from an engineering background and see many alternatives.
They've been using pitting for decades. It is outdated. Handling and control of vehicles is a thousand times better today, even in trucks. Suspects can easily drive against pit attempts.
Video after video shows pitting to be ineffective with extremely limited situations in which it can be done safely.
Technology developed from harpoon technology would be far more effective, for example, much like the equipment they have to pull down walls in raids. Lots of engine disabling tech exists. All sorts of barriers, tire shredders, damaging projectiles, endless solutions from an engineering perspective. They can easily develop tools and equipment to disable that truck but they think they know it all and in typical US fashion live in the past with outdated procedures.
There's a reason chases are as prevalent as ever is because the methods for ending them are weak and flawed.
The Ohio Highway Patrol officer acted professionally considering the circumstances. He used his de-escalation training well.

We all know truckers go through a lot and we do not know what makes them do this but I hope this gentleman or lady gets the help they need. I also was part of the Ontario Ca JCT runaway trucker that was crashing into objects and semi, back in 2019. All I can say I hope all these guys/gals get help.

The chase was great to watch but disappointed because it left questions! I like to know the outcomes!
There’s a lot of joking going on about CDL’s, tough aluminum rims, etc., but this is no joking manner. If you’ve ever had a wrong-way driver pass you in the fast lane, going the wrong way because of dementia or a diabetic reaction, you’d have a greater appreciation for the seriousness here, not to mention that this guy, whoever he is, is just plain nuts, had any 18-wheeler, or a caravan of semi-trucks had been cruising along, and this guy showed up, there could have been a big Ole mess, and fatalities, like up in Wyoming, twice this past winter season.
Know how to react, be willing to give sometimes, and don’t always be driving balls to the walls, you never know when this joker will show up and cause a serious delay to your day.
I was watching Real Stories of the Highwayatrol once. They were chasing a semi truck. One sherriff drove 3 miles ahead of the truck and shot 2 slugs into the engine when he drove past. Truck was done after a couple more miles.

It is not a "semi truck" but a "truck tractor" which pulls a "semi-trailer" or in some cases a full trailer. A truck tractor or truck without a trailer is referred to as a bob-tail as in, "I had to bob-tail to pick up this load."

Well, ohio can make you crazy!! Especially when you go to sleep at a rest area & then d.o.t. is knocking on your door for a level three inspection afterwards. Be like: "man, can i at least have peace in a rest area?!?!" But if the driver did have someone hostage or someone was being held at gunpoint while in this bobtail, the state troopers had to do what they had to do!!

I remember this I was on 275 that day but when I seen them he had a trailer and probably 30 to 50 cruiser's behind them.
This tractor probably weighs in at between 16,000 to 18,000 lbs. But a 50 cal to the engine will do it. Good job guys. Glad no one else got hurt.

Thats why a 9mm in the radiator is a shit pot cheaper to repair than a whole fucking engine block and that $98 an hour repair bill over a .50 cal in the damn thing. You ever seen the damage a .50 can do to an aluminum block? Hell even a steel one!
Shoot out the radiator. Yeah it's take a bit longer before the water sensor shuts it down but the owner isn't out a lot of money because of a moron employee. That is if he is an employee! If it was his truck then they should have shot it a few more times hopefully getting the turbo, water pump, alternator and AC compressor to add to his igorance!
Besides most trucks keep running at 200* running up hills like the Grapevine, Mont Eagle, Black and others and not done any damage as those sensors are there to protect that engine!
I just did Grapevine last week both directions and ran a steady 200* and held it there by not flooring the gas and turning on the cab heater to help drain some of the heat.
These engines are engineered these days like the space shuttle!
