Inverness is a city in Citrus County, Florida --- Dash cam video released Monday shows the moments a man tried to avoid getting caught with a stolen truck, shooting at authorities before crashing the truck Sunday morning in Citrus County.
The owner of the stolen truck told he felt helpless seeing his vehicle used for crimes. Lucas Williams discovered it was missing Sunday morning while he was at work at a fire station.
“My wife called me on her way to work saying ‘Hey, did one of your friends pick up your truck to work on it?' I said 'No,’” said Williams.
He reported it stolen. The truck ended up miles away at a house on Muzzle Loaders Court in Inverness. A neighbor saw a social media post about the stolen truck and called it in to authorities when she saw it in her neighbor’s yard.
When Citrus County deputies showed up, the deputies said the suspected thief, Travis Lovett, 22, took out a neighbor’s fence and tried to run deputies over to get away.
"Lovett deliberately drove the stolen vehicle towards one of the deputies, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, before striking a fence and leaving," the sheriff's office said. "While trying to elude deputies, Lovett intentionally accelerated at another responding deputy, forcing the deputy off the roadway to avoid a collision."
Citrus deputies and Florida Highway Patrol chased him for two hours through Citrus, Hernando, and Sumter counties. FHP dash cam video captured the moment the suspect even fired shots at them, a bullet piercing a trooper’s windshield. Williams said he saw the footage on TV.
“I’m not behind the wheel, but I’m watching it do criminal acts where it’s putting people’s lives in jeopardy and my sole purpose in life is to help people. So it kind of makes your stomach turn,” said Williams.
Investigators said Lovett drove recklessly through Inverness and Floral City, driving into oncoming traffic and nearly striking pedestrians in order to lose the following deputies.
"When we have a suspect who is hell-bent on avoiding all contact with law enforcement, their behavior becomes unpredictable and erratic," said Citrus County Sheriff Mike Pendergrast. "This is especially true if they are dead set on not being caught, then they will risk their life, the lives of innocent citizens, and the lives of all our law enforcement deputies."
Troopers outmaneuvered the suspect, causing him to flip and crash.
Lovett was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Bayonet Point, then transferred to Tampa General Hospital. He is listed in serious but stable condition. He was most recently in jail for grand theft auto in January, according to FHP reports.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said Lovett will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated fleeing/eluding of law enforcement. Charges from FHP are pending.
Deputies are looking to identify any additional victims who sustained damage from the incident. Anyone affected is asked to call 352-726-1121 to file a report.

The owner is a deputy fire chief of the county. He has real good insurance that fully paid to have his truck replaced. I know because at 3:30 on the video this went right by my house on Old Floral City Rd., and I was sitting out on my porch less than a block away when this went by. I know the deputy fire chief.

💯💯💯agreed. Ive seen high speed chases & pit maneuvers on dashcam for several years now. And I must admit these deputies did the very best job Ive seen. Granted, the culprit didnt appear to be doing 90+ mph like you usually see. But I dont think the deputy who authored this & gave chase exceeded 70. In fact, much of the chase looks like 60 to me. Several civilians were nevertheless endangered & couldve been killed by this kid
At first I started losing patience with this deputy for not outright swerving into the corner of the truck body to induce a spinout. But his is a better method than the popular method police use, just described. It mustve taken him 5 tries, but his way of using the verticle plates of his cruisers bully bar to snag the rear bumper of his target vehicle is safer for him, plus it exerts only the force necessary for the other driver to lose control. That pit maneuver could have turned out far worst for him & for this fugitive if he hadve done it the usual way
There are other police departments who need to break off once a high speed chase reaches critical crescendo, before more people are killed from their practice of pursuing at up to 150 mph & for an unlimited length of time. Naturally we will never see a dashcam that shows an hour long chase of up to 150 that causes multiple collisions with innocents. That would only highlight the truth of what I just said & bring public pressure to bear on PD's who want to continue pursuits at maximim risk. Conversely, when one of these incidents ends in the death of a culprit or of an officer you can _BE SURE_ that video will be publicized! Unfortunately there were serious issues with the early versions of the system i.e. systems failing to deploy, the adhesive agent not performing well or not sticking at all/falling off and the system not arming, therefore departments cancelled the contracts because it was going to be too costly given the ineffectiveness. Idk if the issues/quality control had been fixed as of this.

Trooper Vaughn was awarded the FHP Trooper of the year by Gov. Ron DeSantis for ending this chase. “Trooper Vaughn was fearless in his pursuit despite the gunshots aimed at the troopers,” the news release states, “and successfully stopped the vehicle resulting in the apprehension of the suspect.”
That beginning when all the cars were moving out of the way for the officer, that was just bliss. Best feeling ever when vehicles actually move over for First Responders.

@@joshuasimber8588 Unfortunately they aren't. They need to have windows that can roll down which armored glass cannot. In addition to this the equipment on patrol vehicles is already heavy so increasing the weight by adding armor to the glass and doors, etc. isn't something that helps when the vehicle needs to be nimble and quick. Training will show that police use the car, any car as cover during an exchange of fire, but it's often more concealment than actual cover. (Which is often as effective at preventing them from being as visible a target as they would be without concealment.)
It's awesome to know we have cops like these protecting us. That was nerves of steel being shot at and still finishing the job. Thanks to you all

16:30 I love how this officer *clears throat* finally adapted his technique due to the skilled anti pitting the driver was using. In fact he actually pitted the officer a little and sent him in the grass a bit.
He kept just front bumping because he couldnt get along side. But as the bumpers sorta locked he just turned his wheel and lifted the other car up and over rather than slamming it over. It was smooth. And i like how he kept on him for that second nudge.

@@TheRoadhammer379, Some of those are not attempts to crash him, they are warnings trying to get him to stop on his own before they do take him completely out. I call them love taps before the ass kicking!
This happened in the county I live in, and I know most of the officers, and they would have much rather that meth head had stopped before they had to take him out. If you listen close you will hear one of the officers emotions kick in and he's upset because they were forced to take this action and it caused the guy to be badly hurt.
Do you think hes hungry for the arrest because he's a sadist? Or could it possibly be because he wants to protect the public? It's police policy to treat stop signs as an uncontrolled intersection during a pursuit. It's all on video, even if he was a crazy sadist hungry for the arrest he probably won't risk his job knowing it's all on camera. The guy was shooting at the officers and the one in the front and obviously even farther back were very much at risk of being killed and put their life on the line anyways to make sure they removed the risk to the public. It's impossible for them to do that without some risk to the public but the bigger picture is a net benefit to the general public and that's why you should support the police instead of giving in to the fear mongering by the media.
@@TheRoadhammer379 if you watch the entire video with audio the cop that did that literally talks to another officer saying that it wasn't a pit attempt because he wasn't sure of oncoming traffic so they were warning bumps. You can even tell from the dash cam footage that he's either really horrible at the pit maneuver or more likely and also lines up with what he verbally states is that they wern't pit attempts at all. Just sayin...

Follow the law and you wont get pitted and dumped onto the side of the road, and you also wont be charged for nearly killing everybody you pass. The police did this with precise training. The driving skills on the main camera are beyond those of most experienced drivers. You've gotta be pretty uneducated if you think the officers should have just let this guy get away. If he's willing to shoot at officers, and lead them on a chase, he deserves what he got. He's just as dangerous out of a chase as he is in one.

Up until he crashed, the driver of the pickup actually did a phenomenal job combating the many PIT attempts. That was some crazy ass driving.... on both parts.

@@benchoflemons398 not necessarily. A 7500 pound truck isn't going to move much when a 3500 pound car hits it. Why most pickups are less damaged in accidents than cars.
You don't want to be in a pickup in a chase coz the weight isn't evenly distributed, obviously. That why you never see them in NASCAR.
