- This live session from the First Light CD was originally broadcast on BBC Radio and rebroadcast on Top Of The Pops show presented by Brian Matthew. I created a stereo sound track from the original mono track, expanded the dynamic range and remastered it for best possible sound.I hope you enjoy this version of this hit song that was the birth ELO!
Note:Contains content owned by EMI and SONY Music Entertainment.
The 10538 is no ordinary track and is also a product of genius.
10538 Overture was an idea that Jeff (Lynne) brought along to the studio which was originally to be a Move track. After recording the basic backing track, the other guys went home, leaving Jeff and myself to run riot with the overdubs. At the time, I was very keen on collecting instruments, and had just acquired a cheap Chinese cello. After we had finished overdubbing the guitars, I sat in the control room trying out this cello and sort of messing around with Jimi Hendrix type riffs. Jeff said, 'That sounds great, why don't we throw it on the track.' I ended up recording around fifteen of these, and as the instrumentation built up, it was beginning to sound like some monster heavy metal orchestra. In fact, it sounded just bloody marvellous.
- Roy Wood , March 28, 2006 - No Answer Remaster
I had this guitar track, like a real big riff on a guitar. I laid it down in the studio and Roy Wood got his cello, his Chinese cello, and he overdubbed about fifteen cello riffs, just double tracking all the time-- and it sounded fantastic. We thought, it was like 'Wow!' and we just sat round playing it for days.
- Jeff Lynne , July 31, 2006 - The Harvest Years 1970-1973 liner notes
Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood formed ELO, as a result of the sound the Beatles achieved on songs such as I am the Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever, which mixed classical instruments with rock instruments. Jeff Lynne has gone on record as saying I Am the Walrus is his favourite record. As for the pig masks in this video, in the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, one of the Beatles wears a pig mask on I am the Walrus 10538 Overture is a really good record.
Superb sound quality! Mike Edwards will be a sad loss, may perpetual light shine upon him.
This is the track (1971 I think) off the original Electric Light Orchestra album that totally hooked me on ELO all those years ago....and I'm still playing that original old worn out vinyl...and here we are in 2015, and I'm in my sixties and still hooked...oh god that's good music....
+cogidubnus1953 NICE I got Hooked with "Out Of the Blue"
+skyprop BTW I'm In my 40's
The original version of "10538 Overture" was simply called "10538", it was recorded in July 1970 by The Move consisting of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Rick Price, it was the first track ever recorded which was credited to The Electric Light Orchestra. Rick Price played bass on the original recordings of "10538 Overture". Rick soon left The Move to pursue a solo career, he didn't want to be involved with the ELO project, so his bass track was wiped from the tapes and re-recorded by Roy Wood. "10538" was originally mean't to be the 'B' side of The Move's single "When Alice Comes Back to the Farm" from the "Looking On" album, it was replaced by another Lynne composition "What" also from the "Looking On" album. After hearing Roy's added cello on the backing track, Jeff decided to change the title to "10538 Overture" and ELO was born. Their debut album, "The Electric Light Orchestra" (Harvest SHVL 797) was released in the UK in December 1971, a full 15 months after the first take of "10538 Overture" was recorded.
I saw Jeff play this song in concert last night! Not everybody stood for this marvelous song but I was standing on the floor. Jeff was about 100 feet away singing at me, unforgettable!
The No Answer title in the US was due to the United Artists secretary's blunder of writing it down as such when she got "No Answer" from the UK label Harvest. The name stuck.
I was in grammar school when this video was released. If your an ELO freak like me, you have to agree, this video and music is timeless.
Tandy on bass .. love it
geez, this is awsome. Grew up with ELO
ELO Rocks, and I've loved them since their beginning. So exciting that Jeff Lynne will be receiving a Star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame soon. This is one of my favorite songs!
Still sounds as good today as it did back in the seventies, 100 per cent pure brilliance 🥰🎸🎻
I don't think I've ever seen Jeff Lynne this lively before.
He has stated he was under the influence
@@Oh_I_Will influence of what?
@@snsnshhhs663 he didn’t elaborate…I will assume, drink
@@Oh_I_Will More like the Beatles.
Lovely to hear this version, so Roy Wood influenced. Jeff and his band do a cracking version live now, too.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.
Asome artists, amazing music
ELO is amazing I can’t get over the musical geniuses of this band. I’m still a huge fan of this group. I love them
This confirms I was born in the wrong era.
Jeff in his early twenties, sounds fairly different!
Roy Wood is so adorable in a...um...Roy Wood costume...
uspscsx costume...what are you talking about. That was his present day wardrobe
maestros de la musica!
Cool to see the ultra talented Richard Tandy behind a bass! :)
Richard deserves much more acclaim and recognition than he gets!
@@unrulyjulie4382he already has…he was the only “real” member of ELO to be allowed to show up at the RNR Hall of Shame. Thanks to Jeff for Not Including or even mentioning the other key members….and NO, Roy shouldn’t have been included…
That was the point. The Beatles had broken up two years before and Jeff was gutted. He's always paid homage to them down the years and rightly so...
Mukin Fagic.
Did You See John Lennon Running In The Streets To Day?
@62rosangeladoro
COME BACK ELOO!!!
The most impressive thing about this mix is the high strings which now stand out far more than on any version of this bbc session. On the minus some of the cymbals sound over bright.
THE MIGHTY ELO..BRILLIANT
You have done absulotely briliant work.
1:00-Jeff wrote that note.
Is that Richard Tandy the keyboard player on base? 2:02
I'd swear that's him!!
Nice sound and sinc of video good job
I like ELO
This song is in the America hustle second trailers! Excellent song should get people who see the trailer checking out more of ELO's fantastic songs....
Good job man,cheers.
It starts at 0:51
That's a really good version. Thank you for posting
serious gigantic talent.frightening really.
cosmicdrifter287 I’m glad you said that because I think this song is blinding genius. Imagine he tried to write songs up to Beatles quality... and at times he succeeded. John Lennon himself praised Lynne for this song.
Richard on bass 🎶👍
is that Richard Tandy playing bass? I know he had to fill in at one point because of an injury to the bass player, but I didn't realize it was on their very first hit. Amazing how those guys could play so many different instruments. Roy plays everything. Jeff has done whole albums by himself. Richard tried a few things before dedicating to keyboards. Bev played guitar as a boy before becoming such a great drummer.
Yes - Richard Tandy was ELO's original bass-player, but he also played guitar and keyboards in that line-up because Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne played bass on some songs. He switched permantently to keyboards when ELO where reconstructed in August 1972. It is really amazing how these guys switched between different instrument. Bill Hunt switched between french horn and keyboards in this line-up
.
Roy Wood played bass on the debut ELO album, for live performances he switched from different instruments, cello, oboe, bassoon, acoustic guitar etc. Richard Tandy took over as bass player for live ELO performances, he also played bass in later television recordings by The Move. Bill Hunt played keyboards and French horn in ELO's early concerts, when Roy Wood left ELO he took Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell with him to form Wizzard. Tandy replaced Hunt as ELO's permanent keyboards player and Mike de Albuquerque was employed as the bassist.
If you can’t play bass, then you probably shouldn’t be in a band.
Them cats were fuckin cool .
first song i ever heard by elo was instantly hooked and have been ever since
Best thing ELO ever did - serious proper music, unlike Mr Blue Sky shit etc
I wouldn't call Mr Blue Sky shit tho... rather Sweet Talkin' Woman or Xanadu.
My favourite
TROLL!
LW97 the Dimustrak Bambarzissmus Master hey sweet talking woman and Xanadu are great songs (I am referring to the Jeff Lynne version of Xanadu)We can all agree that anything off Balance of Power is Shit
Not every band has the privilege and luxury of writing and producing the kind of music they may want to produce. At some stage they will want to make money so they start releasing more pop oriented songs (like Queen did in the 80's).
I assume Jeff is singing live to a pre-recorded backing track (no backing vocals). Two of the "cellists" are actually ELO roadies in pig masks!
I bet they're wearing those masks for a reason. It's not for being a clown or anything. There's gotta be a meaning to it.
🐷🧙♂️🎻🎻
📯🥁🎸😭😭🥰🥰
This song was originally meant a Move single B- side. Could you imagine ?
Move was a great group, all great songs didn´t fit even into the albums.
changin man - paul weller
Class...I would love to see Wood & Lynn get it on again...
Wood and Lynne have always gotten on with each other. Roy left ELO due to their manager, Don Arden (Harry Levy) meddling with the band and trying to drive a wedge between him and Jeff. At that time Roy realised that he was more well known than Jeff, 10538 Overture was Lynne's first UK top 10 single, Wood had a string of hits with The Move. So to save their friendship, Wood chose to leave to form Wizzard. This worked in Arden's favour as he had two bands to manage instead of one. Wood was contracted to Arden until 1977, he has since said that Arden messed with his creative and musical momentum, in so doing Arden ruined his musical career.
@@davidmacgregor5193 correct.
@@davidmacgregor5193 so then, why haven’t they collaborated since the 70’s….or have they?!?
@@Oh_I_Will yes 2 recordings never released.
There's a few comments about various aspects of the song being a homage to The Beatles, but I'm also guessing the video is a tribute to the A Day In The Life video, especially the pig masks!
It's about an escaped prisoner... number 10538... it all makes sense if you think of that...
never cared for the ending of this song ...... they never sounded better than the beatles as far as similar sounding songs go, especially ..... i repeat again ..... the ending rubbish! .......... the rest of song .... sounds great!
Thank you for posting this, it is one of my favorite videos on you tube.
The 70s eh.....we will never see a decade like it again
I sure hope we do
AWESOME ELO!!!!
Tut tut, talking over the overture to the overture.
All you 93XRT listeners.
I think this is what your Aunt Terri
would call a Classic Encounter.
Did Paul Weller pay them for this song☺️ WHAT A TUNE!!!
Great stuff. Paul Weller nicked the riff for Changing Man
TER UMA BANDA COMO A ELO É TUDO DE BOM NA VIDA!!!! FANTÁSTICO!!!! MARAVILHOSO!!!!
Yes correct Richard started out as bassist but when they needed a new keyboard player he took up that roll as it was easier to find a bassist and break him into the band. According to Bev's book.
The two other Cello players were hired hands mimicking playing them one wearing a Gorilla Mask the other wearing a Pig Mask.
Thx Genius
It's a bit hard picking out what cello player's behind what mask...I think that's Hugh in the pig mask, obviously Roy with no mask on, Andy Craig wearing the hat and sunglasses. In one shot you can see Mike Edwards with big hair (dyed red or maybe a wig) far left, so I guess the guy with the caveman mask is Trevor Smith, their first tour sound engineer/occasional player.
Its a pitty the original film of Top of the pops debut by ELO does not seem to exist anymore :(
Genius!!!
Algo asi como Magical Mistery Tour beatlemaniaco setentero
Cristobal Pinto Andrade Asi es.. tremendo genio Jeff Lynne, hubiera sido un Beatle mas con toda seguridad
+Cristobal Pinto Andrade Finely Some One's Got It Right.. Yeaaaa!!!!! I've Been Waiting Like 10 Years Now And Now I've Found You. My Job Is Finish.. I Will Now Become TransParent

@frizzlefrap Did anyone ever claim they sounded better than the Beatles? Or is that just you?
ELO wasn't truly recognized in the States until the mid-70's. In my opinion, the "Out of the Blue" LP introduced ELO to my generation of young Americans who really didn't know ELO prior to its release. I was a sophomore in High School when I saw ELO. I still remember that fantastic show! I had never seen a guy jamming in a rock band with cello standing next to the lead vocalist and guitarist!
love the song ..... but .... too beatle-like at end! (not original there)
Some of the Guys.Where wearing mask. Are FUNNY
¿Jeff Lynne usando un disfraz? I've never seen him that way before.
Is the white-haired cellist wearing a wig?
You mean….like Jeff is today??
Hey I Found a video of Elo doing a cover of Lets spend the night together .Would you be willing to to restore it and clean it up
Must say you do a fantastic job on these videos !!
@ngobleus And Richard Tandy on bass, pre Mike d'Albequerque..
AMAZING! You did an amazing Job! Wish you would be my producer! :D
Having seen vids of them performing live in 1972, I can scarcely believe that this is really live. It sounds like the studio track with some different vocals. I doubt they could have put a performance of this calibre together live at the time.
Good point, but a really good live rendition, even though I always thought these costumes looked silly. Might be a reference to the back of the vinyl record cover.
It’s not completely live. This is mostly backing track with some extra strings and live lead vocals with a little extra guitar
r.i.p Mike Edwards. What a sad loss to music.
first song they released
love elo
What the hell is Bev Bevan wearing?
Had the single. B side was good too
not original video music
Weird hearing it without Jeff’s voice being super distorted, sounds very different.
Not really
Great job remastering!!
EXCELLENT CONVERSION
AWESOME !!!!
Sounding great through my hifi system even without the woofer turned on. Check out Roy Wood on the left man of many characters and talent. For the uninformed he later formed the band Wizzard who had quite a few big hits in the early 70s with See my baby jive, wish it could be xmas, etc and a great Rock and Roll revival LP titled Eddie and the Falcons fantastic albumt that was if your into 50s stuff. He did quite a few solo gems too like Dear Elaine.
