      As much as I love the suave pirate, he's got nothing on how badass Auron is. He fought Yunalesca on two different occasions, somehow ended up in the dream version of Zanarkand, could actually communicate with Sin to some degree, and somehow managed to jump to a different franchise to piss off the god of the underworld. Death was merely an inconvenience to Auron. Even Batman would be impressed by Auron's abilities and dedication.

    " this enabled the samurai to start using guns, An unexpected choice"
    As a history nerd I can tell you it is FAR from unexpected, the samurai historically LOVED firearms when they started cropping up around Japan and were swiftly adopted as their primary weapon during many wars in Feudal Japan

    • @rebaxbayushi577
      @rebaxbayushi577 Месяц назад +12

      Another fun fact if anyone is interested, in Tactic, the fact the Samurai job require the Dragoon job is also linked to history. Historicaly, Samurai mainly used spears as a weapon. The katana was way too precious, both in money and what it represented (the soul of the warrior) to risk in most battles. They were especialy used in duels since they puted everything on the line.

    The Gil toss ability is most likely a reference to the character Heiji Zenigata; a Japanese policeman who wielded a jitte club and threw coins at criminals as he chased them down.
    In FFVI, the relic that unlocks the Gil toss attack for Setzer is even named Heiji’s Jitte.
    And for fans of Lupin III, yes, the character Heiji Zenigata inspired Lupin’s eternal rival, Koichi Zenigata.

    • @ToHoldNothing
      @ToHoldNothing Месяц назад +1

      Which also somehow inspired the Goemon games to have him throw coins. Even the first game involves that, though probably because Goemon is kind of a Japanese Robin Hood, as I recall

    I just want to mention that in Stranger of Paradise that the Samurai even has 2 variants, being Yojimbo and Genji, with Yojimbo being an obvious reference to the summon and Genji being a recurring armor set in past FFs.
    Also a Samurai using a gun isn't so surprising looking at history, and to me is a perfectly fine addition to their arsenal, even going as far to say I hope that in future games if they allow more customization to allow this to be a weapon they can use.

    Samurai using guns makes so much sense too! When you start reading on the Samurai culture a bit, you quickly realize that the katana was more a symbol of status, and a last option is battle. Spears and long bow (eventually replaced by muskets after they were introduced by the Portuguese in Japan) were the weapons of choice of a Samurai warrior.
    Guess Team Ninja did get some influence from the Koei side when it comes to historical accuracy 😂

    Something I'd say should be noted that while they don't have any direct ice spells as such, FF14 Samurai have some ice based attacks in their arsenal and general are something of magic user though one that "casts" using melee strikes rather then direct spell casting, this even effects the design of some characters (which I won't say due to spoilers).
    Also while more commonly associated with the sword, the design of the Samurai armor is in fact that way to make it easier to use bows and later also guns which the Samurai of history did use quite often.

    FWIW, Inagaki's Miyamoto Musashi trilogy isn't called "the Samurai Trilogy" in Japan, and I'd have to rewatch it to confirm whether the word "samurai" is used more less often in the films than "bushi". I'd say it's pretty certain that in Japan that word is more associated with Kurosawa Akira and his ōbeijin fans.
    It should also probably be clarified that there's a difference between "samurai history and culture" and "the novels of Yoshikawa Eiji".

I do my own homebrew tabletop final fantasy and I use your video essays for inspiration on the custom character classes I've built from the ground up. Particularly proud of my eastern class section and even more particular still the Geisha, an androgenous class that's a mix of Gambler/Samurai/Bard/Dancer/Festival Goer add a pinch of scaling Sneak Attack dice, and some poison use and you're set. I really enjoyed this. Being an Iaido practitioner, I appreciate the amount of detail you into the video. Other than the fact I would cringe a little whenever you mispronounced Iaido incorrectly (its E I dou), this is excellent. Dont feel mad, every time I would mispronounce it in class, my sensei would make me go do suburi on the other side of the dojo. 😂
    Also the SOLDIER unit in FFVII is deeply based off of samurai as well. You mentioned Cloud and Sephiroth being based off of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro respectively, but it goes further. Cloud's original design was changed because the designers felt it wasnt enough of a contrast between him and Sephiroth. This original design would go on to become Angeal Hewley. Which is why the Buster Sword (which was based off the boat oar Musashi defeated Kojiro with) originates from him. Also Angeal plays the older mentor to SOLDIER members who would pass on his teachings to Zack, who would pass them on to Cloud. SOLDIER is also considered a higher class of warrior. Being what ashigaru (foot soldiers) strive for. Which Sephiroth represents for Angeal, Genesis and Cloud.

    For FFXIV portion:
    While you mentioned that Hien’s father, Kaien, is the Japanese rendering of Cyan’s name from FF6,
    Hien’s childhood name, you learn, is Shun. Shun, and his mother Mina in Japanese FF6 is rendered as Owain and Elayne Garamond in the English version, Cyan’s tragically deceased son and wife.
    EDIT: Also sort-of but not quite example, the FF13 Mark Mission 51 target Attacus (Spartacus in Japan) is a monstrous Cie’th being who wielded a single blade. It is notoriously tough and nigh invulnerable to Stagger, which has been hitherto the main avenue of dealing damage in the game up to that point. What is more, the blade Attacus wielded is a long, thin, curved blade reminiscent of a katana, which then gets broken as the fight progresses and it pulls another blade from its stomach. The second sword is a broader, machete-like sword, while its third sword is highly reminiscent of the Seven-Branched Sword. I think it’s a very compelling list of things that would make it qualify even though it’s not a Final Fantasy Job per se.

    definitely FFXI. skillfully manipulating your excessive TP to deliver skillchains and assisting the party to perform successive skillchains is it's own brand of entertainment. Just the other day I was farming exemplar points with friends from a new Linkshell, we were in King Ranperre's Tomb, and without a guide we figured out a devastating combo and starting pulling it off every chance we got. At first we were trying a Bard using Sword's Savage Blade, into Samurai's Fudo, into a Warrior's Upheaval, but that only made Skillchain: Fusion; but then I was like, hey I can use Fusion by using Shoha and turning it into Light; the warrior used Upheaval again (i think) and bam, we were doing Radiance skillchains for like 98k damage and dropping these Apex mobs HP by half every time, it was so awesome.

    On the whole, FF15 combat is pretty simple and easy, but there are some enemies that can quickly wipe you out if you're not paying attention. Ronin and Yojimbo can certainly do that. Be very wary if you come across them in a dark, shadowy dungeon

    Loved the video but I'm surprised you decided to leave out ffta2's parivir! They were called yojimbo in japanese/spanish and were very clearly samurai-inspired.
    Great video anyways because Cyan is the best.

    Actually it's implied throughout the story and extra media that the Auron that appears in Kingdom Hearts 2 is the genuine article from Final Fantasy X. That's right the Original Auron might have actually appeared in a Kingdom Hearts game.

      Just think, Auron fought against two incarnations of Sin. Each being capable of ending the world. And Auron won both times. Hades really should have done his homework before trying to control a man that treated his own death as a minor inconvenience.

    I think the Parivir from FF Tactics A2 should have been included, it's a very samurai-themed class with similar abilities.
    (also, overpowered: its elemental attacks deal double damage for no cost!!)

      Probably because they follow the FFWiki listing on their Samurai page, since it's Japanese name is Yojimbo. However, its command being known as Ougi (the same as FFX-2 Samurai command) and has access to Wind Slash, Iai, and Mineuchi. The job clearly is referencing the Samurai of other games. So they really made this a bit incomplete. They also forgot Parai from FFD2, who is literally inspired by the ronin, comes from East, and was remodeled to have Samurai skills in the premium release. >_>

    Samurai should use more bows in RPGs including FF. As historically they used bows as a main weapon.

    Someone be a hero and timestamp FFT Elmdore (not wssting 45 mins if they forgot that boss which only loses because Orlandeau goes first and bypasses everything).
    That blasted iaido with master teleportation and shirahadori (dodge basic physical atks) was cruel (but a good tutorial on how to make a good generic with arcane strength).15:20 nope 😢

    When it comes to choosing a class/job, the Samurai has never really appealed to me despite how powerful it has been in the MMOs, but Auron is quite possibly my favorite character in the entire series, easily the best samurai, though I love Gilgamesh as well.

    I’d argue the “real samurai” of FF7 is Cloud, the low-born soldier elevated by chance to the level of worshipped hero, now working as a wandering mercenary with a hard personality and a hidden heart of gold, plus he holds his swords in a very classical two handed samurai grip. Then the remake adds in a stance where he more easily counters enemy melee strikes and holds the sword above his head in another stereotypical katana grip, and it clicks a bit better. Sephiekins is more of a weeaboo.
