Lol better comment than vid 2:18 I was gonna criticize 1:55 and right after talk about no Dia. Red mage is really a budget black mage while not paying an arm and a leg for the fighter. You really don't want them to do heavy lifting healing the party while having mp needed for black magic. Took me years to learn and the novel ff1-ff3 fleshes them out but shows the thief getting massive upgrades as a ninja. You don't want a fighter nor black mage in the same party as a red mage as I suffered a lot with their overlap.
Ff3 gives better weapons before they get power crept, and ff5 they suck (it'll take galuf forever in his last stand as they should've made him go freelancer vs exdeath if stuck with this or God forbid healing staff white mage) until you get to Phoenix tower 100 abp magic pots to trade elixirs for and master dualcast for 999 abp, which is abysmal to grind beforehand.

I feel like something needs to be clarified in the Final Fantasy XI section...
Chainspell didn't actually allow for a Dualcast-type ability. What it did was, while it was active, allowed a Red Mage to cast any and *every* spell in their spell list instantly. It was treated as their trump card, as it had a very *long* recast timer upon usage, but it was typically considered one of the better special abilities in the game.
Probably the closest thing to Dualcast would be the Fast Cast trait, with reduced casting times of spells and allowing the Red Mage to cast their spells much quicker than other casters like White and Black Mages.

There's a reason that the only job to reach floor 200 of the palace of the dead in FFXIV is the red mage, it's super powerful as a solo job, able to maintain it's strength in all aspects without going way too far into powerful strikes or huge health pools, the ability to do damage at both range and in melee, alongside self-healing abilities make it crazy powerful in most situations and dualcast obliterates any doubt that they might have trouble, sure it's still super difficult to do (i think maybe 12 characters have done it) but nobody else even comes close, I think there's like a 30 floor lead on it.
Not that I'm saying they're super overpowered, because really this benefit only shows up in the deep dungeons, as higher-level content is balanced way differently. though they are still a favourite DPS pick I've seen, they hold no chance of resisting tankbuster attacks or out-healing massive heal-checks with only possessing a single target heal.
I can safely say that red mages are one of my favourite jobs in the series but I'll always be a White mage at heart.
*and they're so god damn stylish it hurts*

  • @TazTheYellow

Veteran Red Mage of Vana'diel here. I appreciate the high-quality video thoroughly covering the history of my favorite job, as well as explaining what I love about it so much. While "Doublecast" had to be alluded to with the ridiculously powerful Chainspell for the real-time game, we did get a version as close to the original implementation as you could get within those confines with Spontaneity, an ability that sets the cast and recast time of your next spell to zero, effectively allowing you to cast it twice in a row if you so pleased.
Something I feel that I have to defend about Final Fantasy III's implementation in particular is how awesome it still was, despite that game's blatant tiering system (disclaimer: I only played the DS version). While its magic implementation was inevitably relegated to utility spells by endgame, it still had access to some of the most powerful weapons and light armor in the game, such as Excalibur and Aegis. I defeated the Cloud of Darkness with Ingus as a Red Mage, while Luneth was a Summoner, Arc a Ninja, and Refia a Devout.

Red Mage is possibly my second favorite class behind Blue Mage. I like how it balances things out. With the first game limitations, you could teach the Red Mage the remaining spells you couldn't with Black and White, being only 3 spells in that magic level., while also working as a decent melee fighter. I love jack of all trade types.

Red Mages were my favorite from the moment I saw them. Christmas Morning 1999, in Final Anthology. Had just finished VII, which revolutionized to my young brain the kinds of intrigue, depth, emotion, and a story a video game could provide. I'll never forget the night I beat VII. My first RPG. It was days or weeks before V, VI, & VIII would be unwrapped, which was the perfect time to have completed it, turned out.
V is one of the most iconic examples of how to introduce Classes ("Jobs" my TT group friends had to correct me on for months). It was the 3rd FF RPG I ever played.) and will rank in the top 5 for me unlike most of the population. 😂

Some tidbits you left out about FF11's RDM:
-They also uniquely specialized in Sword Enhancement Spells. Enfire, Enthunder, etc. This allowed them to imbue their swords with additional elemental damage, not unlike a Mystic Knight. This was later expounded upon in FF Dimensions, where RDM learned Spellblade skills.
-They did not have Dual Cast, but they had a skill called Chainspell which let them rapidly fire off spells instantly for 60 seconds.
-They had a single skill called Spontaneity, which let them cast any spell instantly with no recast time.
-They had MP manipulation in a skill called Convert, which swapped their HP and MP values, so a fully healed RDM with a depleted (but not 0 MP) RDM can restore all their MP instantly and then heal themselves back up.

So much of gaming is about min maxing, versatility is a hideously underutilised gameplay route in multiplayer or roleplaying games. It's normally either not done at all or not done well. great video on the red mage! one little side note you missed on its evolution or de-evolution, in FF11 they had a unique ability to enhance there own weapon with magic damage, allowing them to wield there weapon and also hit with elemental damage at the same time, in a sense combining the two style into one fighting style, kinda like how FF14 enhanced melee fighting is, but you get to choose which element to enhance your weapon with, in stead of simply being "enhanced"

Well one thing of note is that ever since the very first iteration, support magic does not rely on your magic stats, so red mages are naturally more suited towards support. In the original game, spells from the temper, haste, and protect line are better given to red mage so your black and white mages can commit to their job full time(dps and healing), heck, they can even cast those on themselves and start being very competent at dealing damage.

Original. He was overpowered. The only spellcaster needed. You have fast, exit, and plenty of cure. Elemental magic is just icing, the items are enough already. His ability to use silver swords and acceptable armor early on left him nearly as good as a fighter. Ninja becomes a substitute later. You gain more tanking ability, but lack cure and exit.

RDM was by FAR my favorite job in FFXI. So much versatility. Almost any party is instantly made better by it's inclusion. And when I didn't feel like partying, or wanted to NM hunt alone, or duo with my wife, it was well suited for solo or duo play. Many times, I would solo in areas where parties of my level we working (tho at a slower rate, I admit). Still, enfeebling, buffing, healing, teleporting, dealing damage, even pulling, or backup tanking, this mage can do it all, rather than being tied down to one boring job all the time.

Selphies limit break Slot makes use of both Black and White spells as well as having some unique spells. It also casts three spells making it a Triple-cast rather than a Dual-cast but it is in the spirit of it. Her ultimate weapon also boasts excellent accuracy and while nun-chucks are not classical swords or rapiers they are very much a martial style weapon rather than a more magically themed weapon like a cane, wand or staff.
So while only a small aspect I think its at least worth a shout-out.

I like the enfeebling and fast casting version. However, I'd say it seems like time mage kind of merged with red mage when they started getting enhancement and enfeebling as their focus, because it seems like those are staple time mage qualities. In FFXI, for example, I remember spending a lot of time casting haste and slow. Sure felt like a time mage to me. And spells like refresh, which make you get MP back faster, also feel time-magey.

Note about Ashe from FF13. Sure, she comes into the party with a Sword and Shield, but if you break down her stats, they are the EXACT same as Penelo. The ONLY difference is: Ashe has slightly more Magic Power, and Penelo has slightly more MP. Everything else is the same, including HP. So I wouldn't really consider her anything close to a Red Mage. She is a full caster when you really look at her stats. Fran on the other hand, has more split stats.
ps. Seymour is not a Red Mage! He would be considered a Sage, like Tellah and Fusoya. Very strong magic, almost non-existent physical attacks.

You seem to have misunderstood ff11s "ChainSpell" It did not allow you to cast only 2 spells. It removed the casting time of you spells for 1 minute, So it allowed the Rdm to spam spells in an Oh crap situation. and it was not a skill they could do very often as it was the red mage 2 hour ability (1 hour in future patchs) They were notably used as main healers during leveling because of refresh. Having a rdm pair up with a brd or cor in a party ment the rdm never needed to Rest to regain MP like a whm would need to (Meaning less time waiting and more killing). Rdm also had the added benifit of being the best enfeebiler in the game. So there were not a jack of all trades in that game, in some respects they were hands down better then a white mage for healing. Another fact if you were having a Smn in your party it was almost nessasery to have a RDM healer and a BRD in the party to keep up with the mana cost of keeping up a 2-3 Avatar buff rotation aswell as useing predator claws or double slap... Something i left out, If a rdm was melee attacking in a party they were a bad rdm, them auto attacking ment the monsters tp rose faster meaning you would take more damege overall from being hit by more TP moves. (Sorry for the wall of text)

Red Mage has always mean quite a bit to me. FF1 was a huge part of my youth, and my party almost always had one. Many years later when FF5 finally made it across the pond, I swore by Red Mage in the early going. Then when FF11 came out, RDM was my choice out the starting gate. While I went on to main Bard for 12 years, I always had Red Mage leveled and geared. Then when FF3 came around, once again, I swore by Red Mage in the early game.
When RDM was announced for Stormblood, I pretty much instantly retired from Bard (where I started) and White Mage (my main at the time). I love the way RDM plays in 14. The combo loop is always fun to cycle through. And being able to bust out hero moments with multiple back to back rez after a nasty situation always feels good.

In Final Fantasy 11 there is a popular strategy that has been used for many years now which requires a Redmage. The spell stun stops an enemy from moving or doing any actions at all. Having a red mage use chainspell and then cast Stun over and over and over can completely shut down a boss for a full 60 seconds or even longer with proper gear. It became so popular that Square even gave some bosses gradual resistance to repeated stuns as it was breaking the game at points. GO Red mages !!
